• Convert String containing several numbers into integers

  I realize that this question may have been asked several times in the past, but I am going to continue regardless. I have a program that is going to get a string of numbers from keyboard input. The numbers will always be in the form "66 33 9" Essentially, every number is separated with a space, and the user input will always contain a different amount of numbers. I'm aware that using 'sscanf' would work if the amount of numbers in every user-entered string was constant, but this is not the case for me. Also, because I'm new to C++, I'd prefer dealing with 'string' variables rather than arrays of chars.

• C++/CLI and C#, "Casting" Functions to Delegates, What's the scoop?

  In C# 2.0, I can do the following: public class MyClass { delegate void MyDelegate(int myParam); public MyClass(OtherObject obj) { //THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART obj.SomeCollection.Add((MyDelegate)MyFunction); } private void MyFunction(int myParam); { //... } } Trying to implement the same thing in C++/CLI, it appears I have to do: MyDelegate del = gcnew MyDelegate(this, MyFunction); obj-SomeCollection-Add(del); Obviously I can create a new instance of the delegate in C# as well instead of what's going on up there. Is there some kind of magic going on in the C# world that doesn't exist in C++/CLI that allows that cast to work? Some kind of magic anonymous delegate? Thanks.

• Hard drive randomly sppeeding up

  Having a weird issue with my hard drive. Running Windows 7 with an I5 processor. At random times the hard drive will start running at top speed and gradually return to normal over the next two minutes or so. Going to Resource Monitor it shows a variety of things with high read or write numbers. Log files NTFS volume log, Windows prefetch, System/user/appdata, and Program data Norton are the usual top ones listed. This just started about three months ago although the computer is about 3 years old. Have run in safe mode with internet over the weekend going to all of my usual sites with no such speed up. Question 1 - what can be causing this? Question 2 - how can I find out where data is being sent(especially if over the net)? Thank you.

• Set up CakePHP in a subdirectory; Wordpress is installed in the root

  I have been searching for a solution for 2 hours but nothing seems to work... here is my problem: I have WordPress installed in the root (var/www). So by going to http://www.geekderek.com, I see my wordpress site. I put CakePHP in a subdirectory var/www/cakephp. I want to be able to see my CakePHP app by going to: www.geekderek.com/cakephp. However, currently this url just returns a Wordpress page saying "Content not found." I believe this problem can be solved by modifying .htaccess in my root directory. So here is my .htaccess: http://pastebin.com/sXJTRstB As you can see, I added this line to the default WP .htaccess file: RewriteRule ^cakephp(/(.*))?$ cakephp/app/webroot/$1 [QSA,L] However, for some reason this doesn't seem to work.   I've got plenty of these lying around, and I'm wondering if I'm going to face any trouble - or performance problems. I have method A: MyClass monkey; ... if(monkey != null) { ... } Or method B: boolean hasMonkey; //This is set to TRUE when monkey is not null MyClass monkey; ... if(hasMonkey) { ... } On a functional level, they both do the same thing. Right now, I'm using method A. Is that a bad way of doing things? Which is going to perform better?

• Insert data into table effeciently, postgresql

  I am new to postgresql (and databases in general) and was hoping to get some pointers on improving the efficiency of the following statement. I am inserting data from one table to another, and do not want to insert duplicate values. I have a rid (unique identifier in each table) that are indexed and are Primary Keys. I am currently using the following statement: Insert INTO table1 SELECT * FROM table2 WHERE rid NOT IN (SELECT rid FROM table1). As of now the table one is 200,000 records, table2 is 20,000 records. Table1 is going to keep growing (probably to around 2,000,000) and table2 will stay around 20,000 records. As of now the statement takes about 15 minutes to run. I am concerned that as Table1 grows this is going to take way to long. Any suggestions?

• Embed form in another website - pitfalls

  Scenario: We provide a hosted site that clients pay to use internally (a tool to support their business workflow). We have a requirement to provide a form that the clients can 'embed' in their outward facing site. This form will permit a member of the public to enter some details to register an interest - this data will be pushed to our remote system. Question: I'm currently planning on creating a simple HTML page that the client's web guys can include in a simple fashion on their site (either using an iframe or an object tag). If I do this, am I going to run into difficulties when the user tries to submit the embedded form (as it will be going to different domain to the one they are currently browsing)? I had a look at google adsense and I see that they just provide a link to a JS file that renders their ads - I'm not sure I see the advantage in this, but if anybody has any bright ideas... Whatever technique that gets used, I'll have to authenticate the request as coming from my client's site(s).

  How can I catch something going on if the user chooses the exit option from a menu? I mean I'd like to be able to manage the event of a user who is going to close the application but some activity is being performed so he/she shouldn't be able to exit. Here's the code I wrote. In a nutshell : recording is being performed -- user clicks exit -- WARNING "Process is running you can't do it"(The process goes on) nothing is running -- user clicks exit -- application closes Is it possible to solve the problem by just adding a few lines of code without having to rewrite the entire program? thanks very much in advance. • What could cause a returning function to crash? C++

  So I have been debugging this error for hours now. I writing a program using Ogre3d relevant only because it doesn't load symbols so it doesn't let me stack trace which made finding the location of the crash even harder. So, write before I call a specific function I print out "Starting" then I call the function and immediately after I print "Stopping". Throughout the function I print out letters A-F where F is printed right before the function returns (one line above the last '}') The weird thing is when the crash occurs it is after the 'F' is printed but there is no 'Stopping'. Does this mean that the crash is happening in between somewhere? The only thing I can think of is something going wrong during the deallocation of some of the memory allocated during the function. I've never had anything happen like this, I will keep checking to make sure it's going wrong where I think it is.

• Show a Copying-files dialog/form while manually copying files in C#?

  I am manually copying some folders and files through C#, and I want to show the user that something is actually going on. Currently, the program looks as if its frozen, but it is actually copying files. I would think there is already a built-in dialog or form that shows the process, similar to copying/moving files in windows explorer. Is there anything like that available, or will I have to create everything from scratch? Also, would this be the best method to show the user that something is actively going on?   Currently, I have a XTS, called Data, which contains a Date, and two value columns which are numbers. I would like to get a single number as output and which would be the mean of Value1 in the time period from a point where Value2 < mean(Value2) and going forward 14 data points, weeks in this particular data set. In order to get the dates where Value2 < mean(Value2), I wrote the below code Data[which(Data$Value2 < mean(Data$Value2)),"Date"] However, I am not sure how to get the mean of Value1 in the period, going 14 days forward from each of the resultant dates from the above code.

• What happens if an asynchronous delegate call never returns?

  I found a decent looking example of how to call a delegate asynchronously with a timeout... http://www.eggheadcafe.com/tutorials/aspnet/847c94bf-4b8d-4a66-9ae5-5b61f049019f/basics-make-any-method-c.aspx. In summary it uses WaitOne with a timeout to determine if the call does not return before the timeout expires. I also know that you should have an EndInvoke to match each BeginInvoke. So what happens if the wait timeout expires? We (presumably) DON'T want to call EndInvoke as that will block. The code can go on to do 'other things', but have we leaked anything? Is there some poor thread someplace blocked waiting for a return that's never going to happen? Have we leaked some memory where the result-that-will-never-return was going to be placed?

• git - is there a way to get only required files in the working directory

  I'm new to git and trying to use it with a project that has many (several hundreds) sources. The problem I have is that git is extracting all the project's sources to my working directory when doing checkout. This makes a lot of mess as I have to jump between the files and can unintentionally change/corrupt files that I wasn't even planning to change. I would prefer to extract only sources that I'm going to modify and then work with them. So, is there a way to tell git that I only going to work with specific sources, and so, that only these sources would be extracted to the working directory? Note, that this is not a partial checkout or something like this. I'm ok to checkout the whole branch. It's more about organising a working folder. Thanks.

• Trying to use a list iterator to print out entire linked list in Java. Infinite loop for some reaso

  I created my list: private static List list = new LinkedList(); and my iterator: ListIterator itr = list.listIterator(); and use this code to try to print out the list... Only problem is, it never comes out of the loop. When it reaches the tail, shouldn't it come out of the loop, because there is no next? Or is it going back to the head like a circular linked list? It is printing so quickly and my computer locks up shortly after, so I can't really tell what is going on. while (itr.hasNext()) System.out.println(itr.next());

• Just how much do I want to make virtual?

  I am writing an abstract superclass where literally every method is going to be overridden. There is some default functionality I could implement, but most of the time it's enough to leave the implementation to the subclass writer. Since just about every method is going to be overwritten, how much should I make virtual and how much should I just leave as regular methods? In the current incarnation, everything is virtual, but I still haven't let this loose to anyone to use, so the design is flexible. What advantages/disadvantages are there to virtual functions? Links to good reading material about this would be appreciated.

  Is it possible to tell if there are any ongoing 'GET' requests with javascript? I have a feeling that it is not. Basically I don't want to make a seperate request while the other "more important" requests are going as this one is fairly heavy. So I was curious if it is possible to tell if there are currently 'get' requests going and if so I can tell my function to hold off for this update and do it again in 10-15secs. Any information etc would be appreciated.

  I've been writing Windows Services for a while and they always seem to work fine for things that need to run every day, few times a week, once a month, etc. but I've been lately thinking about going with Windows Workflow Foundation. However, I am unsure how would they run on a server without some container application (for instance SharePoint)? I worked with Sharepoint workflows before and I always had huge problems, at first with the bugs in the workflow architecture implementation (the problems with sleep and delay) and later when they eventually started to work, they were difficult to manage and change. On the other hand Windows Services were always quite easy to implement, easy to create a setup for them and install them and they were always quite resilient (they were often working for months without crashing or something else going wrong). What do you recommend? Please bear in mind we are working in .NET (version is of no problem, if 4.0 brings something new on this subject, we can use it).

  Hi guys! So, I have a dictionary with almost 100,000 (key, values) pairs and the majority of the keys map to the same values. For example imagine something like that: dict = {'a': 1, 'c': 2, 'b': 1, 'e': 2, 'd': 3, 'h': 1, 'j': 3} What I want to do, is to reverse the dictionary so that each value in dict is going to be a key at the reverse_dict and is going to map to a list of all the dict.keys that used to map to that value at the dict. So based on the example above I would get: reversed_dict = {1: ['a', 'b', 'h'], 2:['e', 'c'] , 3:['d', 'j']} I came up with a solution that is very expensive and I would really want to hear any ideas more efficient than mine. my expensive solution: reversed_dict = {} for value in dict.values(): reversed_dict[value] = [] for key in dict.keys(): if dict[key] == value: if key not in reversed_dict[value]: reversed_dict[value].append(key) Output >> reversed_dict = {1: ['a', 'b', 'h'], 2: ['c', 'e'], 3: ['d', 'j']} I would really appreciate to hear any ideas better and more efficient than than mine. • Pulling .live() functionality out of jQuery

  I am writing a Firefox Add-On that currently is depending on jQuery for the following things: Selectors Animations A special .live("focus") hail-mary event-catching maneuver that happens to work with jQuery 1.4.2 (but not 1.4.4) jQuery isn't well suited for functioning inside XUL, and it's a miracle we've gotten this far with it. We're trying to remove the jQuery requirements, the first two are easy (animations are simple, and we can use .querySelector() instead of jQuery), but the .live has proven impossible to do on our own. I've tried reading the source code, but I haven't been able to piece it apart. What is the jQuery .live function doing? There's clearly a lot more going on than document.addEventListener("focus"/"focusin",function_to_pick_apart_events). What else is going on here?

• Can't get my graphics driver (GMA 3150) to work

  I've been searching like crazy trying to find a fix for this, it's the only thing that's not completely working on my setup. I see posts where people say it should be working but it just isn't. I have a Gateway LT2802u netbook and I installed 11.10 on this 2 days ago. Everything works except for accelerated graphics. At first I couldn't watch a simple flash video at all, but somehow I got it to work. Now the last problem I have is I can't watch HD videos, my screen resolution won't go higher than 1024x600, and my under my graphics driver it says "Unknown". After doing as much research as possible, I've come to the conclusion that it's the GMA 3150 graphics driver. There is a bunch of talk on it all over the interwebs but nothing lately. I've tried the fixes that some people have used but most when I try to get the package it's no longer there or available if that makes sense. I'm loving everything Ubuntu has to offer but it'll really bite if I can't use it any more because of this problem. Does anybody have any ideas? You'd really be helping a lot.

• Install a certficate on a device

  I need to install a certificate on a Windows Mobile device. I have tried creating a cab file to do it, but the cab file fails to run. I have a lot of devices that are not all physically near me that I am going to need to put this on, so any manual process is just not feasible (ie, if it needs active sync then it is not going to work). Any ideas on how to do this? Visual Studio does not seem to support what I am trying to do.

• How can i add Active Directory security groups to a SharePoint site to control permissions, rather than individual user accounts

  SharePoint does integrate active directory accounts, of course, but how about security groups? Have a few sites where I'm fairly confident access is going through an existing Active Directory (AD) security groups (i.e. only an AD security group has been granted permissions through the 'People and Groups') In another situation, where I created the AD group and granted it permissions to a site, the customers were not able to access immediately. Eventually had to fast-track it and add the individuals to the People and Groups to keep the project going, but hoping not to have to maintain it that way. Any specific requirements of the security group in AD? Universal, Global, or domain local? Is there any time delay between modifying group members in AD and having that take effect in SharePoint?
