  I am trying to install VMWare Workstation 6.5.5 (64-bit) on Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit), but at about 2/3 of the progress bar, it freezes where it says: Installing VMWare Player 2.5.5 Configuring... Interestingly, it is so frozen, that even after I hit cancel, it is still stuck. CPU consumption is at 0% and the command with which I launched the installer is: sudo sh VMware-Workstation-6.5.5-328052.x86_64.bundle Anyone has seen this before? Any idea why this is happening and how to solve this?

• YouTube shows "Missing Plug-in" in window for 12.04

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit, I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras, configured Medibuntu, installed Synaptic Package, Adobe Flash Player which came installed with Chromium which is the browser I installed. Also files to play encrypted DVDs. I haven't been able to locate the flashplayer file in /usr/lib folders which I assume should be there. Don't know if this is why I can't see videos at YouTube. Not sure where else to look.

• What could cause a WMV to not play to completion in a browser?

  A realtor has had videos created for a community she is selling homes for, the people who made the videos gave them to us in WMV format. I can play these videos without any problem in Windows Media Player, VLC, and Quicktime (via Flip4Mac). I can play the videos from their location at videohomeguide.com in my browser without any trouble. However when I upload the files to our server the video stops at about the 1 minute mark in Safari and FireFox on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I'm not sure if Windows browsers have the same issue because they are loaded using Windows Media Player. http://carolepaul.com/images/uploads/cottageslsjamestown.wmv <- our server, will fail at 1:09ish. http://www.videohomeguide.com/media/cottageslsjamestown.wmv <- should play to completion (3:27ish) The files generate the same MD5 hash on my desktop and on our server. Since the files are identical and are playable using VLC/WMP/Quicktime, and playable in the browsers from videohomeguide.com it seems to me that it is some sort of server config... maybe incorrect headers sent to the browsers? • Windows Media Based video audio converter?

  This may seem like an odd question. Right now ONLY windows media player, VLC and media player classic opens and plays my audio video correctly. Virtualdub plays it back with the wrong framerate and losses the audio, Avidemux 2.5 seems to be able to dump the audio/video but the video (like all other apps) is either a bad framerate or is wrong (glitches and bad framerate or bad dump). Nothing recognizes the audio file and when playing the video Avidemux (and most other things) die. FFMPEG cant seem to split the video or audio (using copy -an and etc) and this is getting me very angry. VLC dumps the video incorrectly when i try dumping it with that too. What can i use to convert the video? its streaming so it starts at 26mins in and ends at 28 (this is where apps have the problem. They dont know this and fudge everything or crash). I manage to dump the audio with Avidemux but virtualdub and ffmpeg says unreconized codec. Even if i cant convert it (it seems compressed enough) i want to at least attach it back into an AVI.

• Is it possible to provide a wired ethernet connection to external devices with an extra LAN card?

  I'm trying to provide a wired ethernet connection (wireless is not an option for this device) to a device (Samsung blu-ray player) without running Cat5 cable all over the home. I have a PC sitting next to this device and the PC is connected to the network via a wireless USB adapter. Is it possible to provide a wired connection from the PC to the wired device using the (currently unused) ethernet port in the back of the computer? Here's how I envision the device getting connected to the internet via my network: Linksys WRT54G v8 Wireless Router | ``--> Windows 7 PC connected via wireless | ``--> Blu-ray player connected via wired connection to the ethernet port on the PC. If so, how is this done? Will I need a crossover cable? What settings will I need to change in Windows 7 so that the device can connect? NOTE: I'm trying to avoid having to buy a wireless bridge and/or hacking a router with an open-source firmware to get this to work. See my previous question for more details.

• Guest can't access host windows network share

  HI folks, I've recently run into a strange problem after upgrading to VMware player 3. Certain virtual machines (currently an XP and a VIsta VM) seem to have lost the ability to access the host (XP) network shared folders (SMB). Both VM machines are bridged networking, firewall is up. Host firewall is up. Host and guests use DHCP. All OS are workgroup connected. The Vista VM I am not completely sure, but the XP VM did have access to the host's network shared folders after the player upgrade. Then today it wouldn't work, network path can't be found. Now here's the wierd part. The host's network shared folders can be accessed properly by other PC's on the network (and as far as I know, no settings have been changed). The host is pingable from the guests, and name resolution works. The guests can access network shares on other PC's in the network, and access the internet. My Network Places shows the host PC, but double clicking on it takes a long time before it finally times out with an error. Doing a wireshark packet capture, the guest is sending out the protocol negotiation, and the host is sending a response, but after that the guest behaves like it didn't receive anything and is doing TCP retransmissions. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong? Yes I know I can drag and drop files or setup the special VMware shared folders, but I want to access the host just like any other network accessible shared folder. It just seems really odd when any other computer works, just not between the guest and host.

• Why won't my computer go to sleep automatically?

  Windows 8 is set to sleep after 30 mins, and it used to work, but recently it's started refusing to sleep. (I can still manually ask it to go to sleep without any issue.) I was having issues a while ago, but it was with my network adapter. That's since been disabled, so it's definitely not that: I've checked to see what devices are able to wake up my machine, but it only appears to be my mouse: Which is odd, because I haven't recently changed my mouse, and more confusing still: The monitor does go to sleep just fine. If it was actually the mouse keeping my system awake, I'm pretty sure the monitor wouldn't go to sleep. I've checked my Wake Timers, and nothing: I've also checked my existing requests... UPDATE: I found something. What to do with it, I don't know... Note: Even when /requests says that there's "NONE" under every category, my machine still won't sleep(!). In short: How can I tell what's preventing my computer from Sleeping? UPDATE: Ok, so I now have a few more pieces of the puzzle. I came back to my computer and it was ASLEEP! Lawks! It seems that the only times it doesn't sleep is if VLC Player is open, even if a video isn't actually playing. UPDATE UPDATE: Ok, so it won't sleep sometimes when VLC Player ISN'T running, either. • Winamp has slow /skipping video playback on Windows 7

  Hello, I have Windows 7 x64 (7600 90-day trial version) and Winamp 5.6 installed. When I play a video in Windows Media Player, the video plays smooth, however when I play a video in winamp, the video is mostly ok when played back at the original size (but not completely), but if I play it back in fullscreen, the playback gets really slow. The video's audio track plays just fine. I have a DELL XPS 420 computer (8GB of RAM) with a Nvidia GeForce 8800 CTS 512 video card. I've updated to the latest drivers. I have the default Windows 7 codecs, and the CCCP codec pack which used to be all I needed under Windows XP to play all types of videos. Are the codecs needed for Windows Y the same? What's going on? UPDATE: As suggested, I turned off Aero and winamp ran just fine again. So I just have to wait for winamp to be rewritten to work with the way Vista/Windows 7 runs? UPDATE 2: Winamp has updated their player, and it works great with Windows 7 now.

• How to play WAV file through Network Paging Interface

  In our building we have a Viking Paging ZPI-4 Interface for our intercom. The interface receives data from our Asterisk Phone system via a Cisco SPA112 Port Adapter which has it's own IP address on the network and converts digital into analog. Asterisk plays the "5" tone and then allows the user's voice to commence over the connection. Now, what I want to do is to play a wav file over this Viking Paging device using the Cisco Port Adapter. I know how to get Asterisk to do it, but I want to do this without Asterisk. I want some kind of program that can talk to the Cisco Port Adapter and then transmit the wav file into the Viking Paging Device. What kind of program do I need to get or make? Now, I found this link if it helps anyone with ideas. I also found this information, but I'm not sure how to apply it. I also found this, but it involves an arduino. However, I already have the analog-to-digital convertor, and the Viking will handle sending sound over the paging speakers. I just need to know how to send the wav file to the Viking via the Port Adapter. So far, I know my wav file should be formatted as 8bit mono, and I need to send the "5" tone to open the Viking Pager's channel. [update] I am trying to figure out if I can use VLC player to stream to the ipaddress of the Port Adapter. So far I'm not having success with that, and don't even know if it will work. Windows Media Player has a streaming option too. I am thinking that since the Cisco Port Adapter thinks it is a sort of phone, that the only way this can be done is via SIP.

• Mac OS X in Virtualbox says "You need to restart your computer"

  I've been trying to figure out for the past week how to get Snow Leopard reliably running in a VM. Right now I am using VirtualBox, and it runs fine for a while, but every once in a while (happened 3 times in the last few hours) I get the "You need to restart your computer" message. Unfortunately, it hasn't even lasted long enough to finish installing the operating system yet. I first tried VMWare, which was a pain to set up. I got it running ok, operating system installed, with the guest tools. Every once in a while though, it just stops running. I click inside the VM, and there's no mouse. It doesn't respond to keyboard input either. I have to reset the VM to get a response. I'm wondering if this is the same error. This happens with both Workstation and Player. • Is there a clean way to obtain exclusive access to a physical partition under Windows?

  Hey guys, I'm trying, under Windows 7, to run a virtual machine with VMWare Player from an OS installed on a physical partition. However, when I boot the virtual machine, VMWare Player says that it couldn't access the physical drive for writing. This seems to be a generally acknowledged problem in the VMWare community, as Windows Vista introduced a compelling new security feature that makes it impossible to write to a raw drive without obtaining exclusive access to it first. I have googled the issue and found a few workarounds. However, the clean ones seem to only work on whole physical disks, and not on partitions. So I would be left with the dirty solution. In short, it meddles with the MBR to erase any trace of the partitions to use, makes Windows forget about them, then restores the MBR so we can launch the VM. I'm not sure I want to do that. Is there a way to let VMWare acquire exclusive access to the partition without requiring me to nuke it away? What I'd be looking for, I suppose, is a way to put just partitions offline instead of whole physical drives.

• XP VM not detecting USB keyboard or mouse from Windows 7 host

  I've been using a Windows XP Pro VM (32-bit, SP3) for months on my work PC (Windows 7 64-bit) with no problems, with a PS/2 keyboard and a standard optical USB mouse. Today I copied this VM onto my home PC, which is also Windows 7 64-bit but with a G15 USB keyboard and MX518 USB mouse. For some reason the VM does not accept input from the keyboard or mouse, which makes it almost impossible to use. (Unity works but is not an option). Both my home and work PC are running VMware player 3.1.0. My keyboard and mouse show up as USB devices in the bottom-right of the VMware Player window, and if I click them I have the standard option to "Connect (Disconnect from host)". I have selected this option for the keyboard, and then the VM happily accepts keyboard input, but of course my host PC no longer does. It seems like VMware is seeing my keyboard and mouse as USB devices and not input devices. I've tried sending the keyboard input to the guest and reinstalling VMware Tools, but that achieved nothing. I'm certain it's a problem with the VM, and not the XP install, as I also can't use F12 to enter the VMware BIOS when the VM is powering up.

• Convert MPG w/ AC3 audio to something else - on a Mac

  I'm helping with a small volunteer media team, and they have several .mpg videos that don't appear to have sound when played in QuickTime, iTunes, Real Player, etc, on the local Mac machine. I was able to hear audio after transferring one of the movies to a Windows machine that had VLC media player on it. Through VLC I was able to discover that the audio stream is a52 / AC3 format. We use Autodesk Cleaner in our normal workflow of converting the format of our videos to FLV, but for some reason it's unable to convert this particular batch of videos (well, the video converts fine, but with no audio). Obviously, it seems that there's a codec issue here, but I'm not sure how to correct it. (I'm not extremely familiar with Macs, and/or Autodesk Cleaner). I've seen the Perian codec pack, but I'm not sure that having the codecs on the system will enable Cleaner to convert these videos (particularly the audio stream, since the video converts fine). Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking, or will we have to use something else for this particular batch of videos? If so, what?

• Playback random section from multiple videos changing every 5 minutes

  I'm setting up the A/V for a holiday party this weekend and have an idea that I'm not sure how to implement. I have a bunch of Christmas movies (Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, etc.) that I'd like to have running continuously at the party. The setup is a MacBook connected to a projector. I want this to be a background ambiance thing so it's going to be running silently. Since all of the movies are in the +1 hour range, instead of just playing them all through from beginning to end, I'd like to show small samples randomly and continuously. Ideally the way it would work is that every five minutes it would choose a random 5-minute sample from a random movie in the playlist/directory and display it. Once that clip is over, it should choose another clip and do some sort of fade/wipe to the chosen clip. I'm not sure where to start on this, beginning with what player I should use. Can VLC do something like this? MPlayer? If there's a player with an extensive scripting language (support for rand(), video length discovery, random video access). If so, I will probably be able to RTFM and get it working; it's just that I don't have time to backtrack from dead-ends so I'd like to start off on the right track. Any suggestions?

• Unexpected media key behavior on new Acer Aspire

  I'm having weird issues with the media keys (play/pause, previous, next, etc.) on a new Acer Aspire laptop. This is the first Acer I've owned and also my first Windows 7 computer, so I'm not sure whether the behavior is a result of some hidden Acer process that I haven't rooted out yet, or some Windows 7 option that I'm not aware of, or something else. I'm experiencing two issues that I suspect are related. Both problems are intermittent but happen more often than not. The media player I'm using is Winamp. I'm pretty sure I've had the same problem when using other media players, but when I tried to verify that before posting this, I only had the problems with Winamp. Because the problems are intermittent, I'm not sure if that's significant. 1) When I press the Play/Pause media key, in addition to playing or pausing the media player, it brings up a little menu in the center of the screen that lists my removable drives (CD/DVD, USB drives, etc.). To make the menu go away I have to either click away from it or hit Escape. Selecting a drive on the menu doesn't seem to do anything. 2) When I press the Previous or Next media keys, it skips 2+ tracks instead of just one (the exact number seems to vary). I've poked around all the control panel options that I can find, and looked through all the utilities that came with the computer with no luck. There's nothing that I can find in the (very slim) documentation, either. I have a hunch that the problem is caused by whatever utility manages global hotkeys, but I haven't found any way to configure that. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: It looks like Winamp was the culprit. I did have the problem when using other media players, but when I uninstalled Winamp, the problem went away. I'd like to use Winamp, but I can survive with other players.

• Computer freezes after watching Youtube videos

  I had Windows 7 installed all september. But I installed Windows XP Professional back because my computer couldn't handle the new OS. After first boot I tried to install newest flash player (from Adobe website), but it failed. I had my old setup on USB drive and it worked. I don't know is it important or not. I am watching Youtube videos in my free time (almost every hour). After few days the computer started to freeze when I open a page with the video or close the page with video, not while I watch a video. No BSODs. Nothing in Event viewer. I use Firefox only. When computer freezes the sound wont. If iTunes is playing a radio station or is it another video playing in background, the sound wont freeze. Last few days the mouse wont freeze. Its a strange symptom. If I click few times then the cursor will actually freeze. I just want to know where does this problem come from (hardware - graphics card, old motherboard or it's just some glitch in setups). If it's not graphics card then I will be happy. The graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 4650 - brand new. Catalyst 11.8 installed. Things I have tried: Installed newest flash player after a week (the setup didn't fail this time) Installed latest video drivers Deleting cookies Defragmenting hard drive Using TuneUp utilities for computer cleenup Installed latest Mozilla Firefox Cleaned the PC Changed CPU Fan speed almost to max (just to be sure) Things I haven't tried yet: Didn't try playing videos on other browsers What can I do now?

  I have an existing Windows 7 installation that I'd like to virtualize under Linux. Windows boots fine on Disk A, Linux boots fine on Disk B. (Both disks are SATA.) I can mount the Windows disk when in Linux. I've tried VirtualBox and VMWare Player and neither will allow me to boot from the other disk. VirtualBox doesn't seem to have the option to do so. VMWare Player has the option to have an IDE drive exposed to the virtual environment as a SCSI disk. I've tried that, but it throws the error "Cannot connect virtual device ide1:0 because no corresponding device is available on the host." I've verified that it's pointing to the correct hard drive. I'm willing to try other virtualization products, and I'm not averse to spending a little money to get this to work. I've seen this other question, and it's not a duplicate, as I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm also interested in solutions going the other way (Linux on Windows), but that'd be lagniappe.
