• Why does pulling the power cord then pressing the power button fix a non-booting PC?

  I've been working at this institution for about 6 years. One thing thing that I've always found curious is that sometimes—especially after a power outage—we find a PC that won't boot when the power button is pressed. Usually, the fans will spin up, but it won't POST. Our solution is to pull the power cord, press the power button with the computer unplugged, then plug it in and turn it on. It seems more common with Gateway brand PCs than the Dells or HPs that we have around. Does anybody know what pressing the power button does when the computer is unplugged? I have some vague notion that closing the power button circuit allows some capacitors to discharge or something, but I'd like a firmer answer to offer my users when they ask me what I'm doing. My best guess as to why fans can spin but it can't POST is that the BIOS is in some non-functional state. I don't know how BIOS stores state, but my best guess is that there is some residual garbage in its registers or something, like the stack pointer isn't starting at 0 maybe?

• Spring Security beginner's question. Build failed

  Hello, I downloaded all jar files for Spring Security 3.0 and added them to my lib folder in Netbeans 6.8. Then i added Spring framework to my web application and tried to modify applicationContext.xml as given in the pdf that shipped with Spring Security. • Gitosis post-update wont run

  Im running cygwin on a windows vista pc. Ive successfully installed sshd, configured, and built gitosis. I can remotely git clone the gitosis-admin.git repository, made a change to the config, committed and pushed back to cygwin machine successfully. However the post-update doesnt execute and the new repository (as specified in the config) have not created. I have run: chmod 755 /home/git/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/hooks/post-update and an ls -l shows the following: -rwxr-xr-x 1 git None 69 2010-04-13 22:55 post-update yet, when I run: ./post-update I receive the following error: ERROR:gitosis.run_hook:Must have GIT_DIR set in enviroment Ive included in my git .bashrc the line: GIT_DIR=$HOME/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/ and if I type Set at the prompt, I can see: GIT_DIR=/home/git/repositories/gitosis-admin.git/ What else can I try, because Im running out of ideas.

• IIS URL Rewrite HTTP to HTTPS with Port

  My website has two bindings: 1000 and 1443 (port 80/443 are in use by another website on the same IIS instance). Port 1000 is HTTP, port 1443 is HTTPS. What I want to do is redirect any incoming request using "htt p://server:1000" to "htt ps://server:1443". I'm playing around with IIS 7 rewrite module 2.0 but I'm banging my head against the wall. Any insight is appreciated! BTW the rewrite configuration below works great with a site that has an HTTP binding on port 80 and HTTPS binding on port 443, but it doesn't work with my ports. P.S. My URLs intentionally have spaces because the 'spam prevention mechanism' kicked in. For some reason google login doesn't work anymore so I had to create an OpenID account (No Script could be the culprit). • ASP.NET MVC : strange POST behavior

  ASP.NET MVC 2 app I have two actions on my controller (Toons): [GET] List [POST] Add App is running on IIS7 integration mode, so /Toons/List works fine. But when I do POST (that redirects to /Toons/List internally) it redirects (with 302 Object Moved) back to /Toons/Add. The problem goes away if I use .aspx hack (that works in IIS6/IIS7 classic mode). But without .aspx - GET work fine, but POST redirects me onto itself but with GET. What am I missing? I'm hosting with webhost4life.com and they did change IIS7 to integrated mode already. EDIT: The code works as expected using UltiDev Cassini server. EDIT: It turned out to be trailing-slash-in-URL issue. Somehow IIS7 doesn't route request properly if there is no slash at the end. EDET: Explanation of the behavior What happens is when I request (POST) /Toons/List (without trailing slash), IIS doesn't find the handler (I do not have knowledge to understand how exactly IIS does URL-to-handler mapping) and redirects the request (using 302 code) to /Toons/List/ (notice trailing slash). A browser, according to the HTTP specification, must redirect the request using same method (POST in this case), but instead it handles 302 as if it is 303 and issues GET request for the new URL. This is incorrect, but known behavior of most browsers. The solution is either to use .aspx-hack to make it unambiguous for IIS how to map requests to ASP.NET handler, or configure IIS to handle everything in the virtual directory using ASP.NET handler. Q: what is a better way to handle this?

  I've just moved a collection of sites over to a brand-new server, running Apache 2.2.3, PHP 5.3, and Plesk 10.1.1. I am having problems with file permissions on PHP sessions, which are being stored in /var/lib/php/session. I originally set the permissions like so for this folder: drwxrwx--- 2 apache psacln 8192 Mar 22 23:25 session This worked fine, for HTTP sessions. Files were being saved in that folder with these permissions: -rw------- 1 client1 psacln 0 Mar 22 23:24 sess_507... -rw------- 1 client2 psacln 0 Mar 22 23:25 sess_8o1... The problem, however, is that PHP scripts accessed via HTTPS do not seem to be run by the same client1 or client2 user. I deleted files in the session directory and accessed a login page via HTTPS to see how sessions were being saved when initiated via this protocol: -rw------- 1 apache apache 0 Mar 22 23:25 sess_507... So, for whatever reason, sessions initiated by clients browsing with HTTPS were being saved by apache:apache, while sessions from HTTP clients were saved with someclient:psacln. What I'd like to ask: How can I avoid this problem with session permissions? When sessions are created via unencrypted HTTP and a client visits an HTTPS portion of the site, permission errors are shown, since apache:apache tries to access the session save created by someclient:psacln. The converse is also true. Can I change the user which runs the Apache HTTPS server, via Plesk or the command line? If not, can I have PHP sessions save with rw-rw---- permissions, and then add apache to the psacln group? Any other suggestions on how to fix this issue?

  I use a Linksys WRT54GL router with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std (SVN revision 13064) which I am trying to make forward all HTTP and HTTPS traffic to an external app called Fiddler (used as proxy) on port 8888.   There are a lot of articles devoted to working with data in MVC, and nothing about MVC 2. So my question is: what is the proper way to handle POST-query and validate it. Assume we have 2 actions. Both of them operates over the same entity, but each action has its own separated set of object properties that should be bound in automatic manner. For example: Action "A" should bind only "Name" property of object, taken from POST-request Action "B" should bind only "Date" property of object, taken from POST-request As far as I understand - we cannot use Bind attribute in this case. So - what are the best practices in MVC2 to handle POST-data and probably validate it. UPD: After Actions performed - additional logic will be applied to the objects so they become valid and ready to store in persistent layer. For action "A" - it will be setting up Date to current date.

  Hello everyone, i am writing an FBML app on facebook hosted in GAE. Facebook will talk to your hosted app only vai POST (im sure this is the cause, but please do correct me if i'm wrong). So im faced with the issue that inside of my POST method, i need to redirect to facebook OAuth authroize URL. But i can only send a GET request. How can i do that? At the moment i'm doing class OauthHandler(webapp.RequestHandler): def post(self): # blablablab request.redirect(oauth_uri) Which is wrong since the oauth_uri is only responding to GET. Further more, OAuth will redirect back to my redirect handler through GET, but i cant! i can only do post. So i'm confused. ideas? Thanks in advance

• is there a way using Ruby's net/http to post form data to an http proxy?

  I have a basic Squid server setup and I am trying to use Ruby's Net::HTTP::Proxy class to send a POST of form data to a specified HTTP endpoint. I assumed I could do the following: Net::HTTP::Proxy(my_host, my_port).start(url.host) do |h| req = Net::HTTP::Post.new(url.path) req.form_data = { "xml" => xml } h.request(req) end But, alas, proxy vs. non-proxied Net::HTTP classes don't seem to use the proxy IP Address. my remote service responds telling me that it received a request from the wrong IP address, ie: not the proxy. I am looking for a specific way to write the procedure, so that I can successfully send a form post via a proxy. Help? :)
