• SQL SERVER – Preserve Leading Zero While Coping to Excel from SSMS

  Earlier I wrote two articles about how to efficiently copy data from SSMS to Excel. Since I wrote that post there are plenty of interest generated on this subject. There are a few questions I keep on getting over this subject. One of the question is how to get the leading zero preserved while copying the data from SSMS to Excel. Well it is almost the same way as my earlier post SQL SERVER – Excel Losing Decimal Values When Value Pasted from SSMS ResultSet. The key here is in EXCEL and not in SQL Server. The step here is to change the format of Excel Cell to Text from Numbers and that will preserve the value of the with leading or trailing Zeros in Excel. However, I assume this is done for display purpose only because once you convert column to Text you may find it difficult to do numeric operations over the column for example Aggregation, Average etc. If you need to do the same you should either convert the columns back to Numeric in Excel or do the process in Database and export the same value as along with it as well. However, I have seen in requirement in the real world where the user has to have a numeric value with leading Zero values in it for display purpose. Here is my suggestion, instead of manipulating numeric value in the database and converting it to character value the ideal thing to do is to store it as a numeric value only in the database. Whatever changes you want to do for display purpose should be handled at the time of the display using the format function of SQL or Application Language. Honestly, database is data layer and presentation is presentation layer – they are two different things and if possible they should not be mixed. If due to any reason you cannot follow above advise and you need is to have append leading zeros in the database only here are two of my previous articles I suggest you to refer them. I am open to learn new tricks as these articles are almost three years old. Please share your opinion and suggestions in the comments area. • SQL SERVER – How to easily work with Database Diagrams

  Databases are very widely used in the modern world. Regardless of the complexity of a database, each one requires in depth designing. To practice along please Download dbForge Studio now.  The right methodology of designing a database is based on the foundations of data normalization, according to which we should first define database’s key elements – entities. Afterwards the attributes of entities and relations between them are determined. There is a strong opinion that the process of database designing should start with a pencil and a blank sheet of paper. This might look old-fashioned nowadays, because SQL Server provides a much wider functionality for designing databases – Database Diagrams. When using SSMS for working with Database Diagrams I realized two things – on the one hand, visualization of a scheme allows designing a database more efficiently; on the other – when it came to creating a big scheme, some difficulties occurred when designing with SSMS. The alternatives haven’t taken long to wait and dbForge Studio for SQL Server is one of them. Its functions offer more advantages for working with Database Diagrams. For example, unlike SSMS, dbForge Studio supports an opportunity to drag-and-drop several tables at once from the Database Explorer. This is my opinion but personally I find this option very useful. Another great thing is that a diagram can be saved as both a graphic file and a special XML file, which in case of identical environment can be easily opened on the other server for continuing the work. During working with dbForge Studio it turned out that it offers a wide set of elements to operate with on the diagram. Noteworthy among such elements are containers which allow aggregating diagram objects into thematic groups. Moreover, you can even place an image directly on the diagram if the scheme design is based on a standard template. Each of the development environments has a different approach to storing a diagram (for example, SSMS stores them on a server-side, whereas dbForge Studio – in a local file). I haven’t found yet an ability to convert existing diagrams from SSMS to dbForge Studio. However I hope Devart developers will implement this feature in one of the following releases. All in all, editing Database Diagrams through dbForge Studio was a nice experience and allowed speeding-up the common database designing tasks. Download dbForge Studio now. I was trying to use x11vnc to serve remote desktops to users but from what I have understood [after couple of hours] it directly serves the x display of only one user. I want to have something like windows 2008 login where every user connects and logins to his own desktop and has his own working environment. Is it possible with ubuntu server ? Thank you

Looking at all the activities Klout is doing it is indeed big consumer of the Big Data as well it is early adopter of the big data and Hadoop based system.  Klout has to 1 trillion rows of data to be analyzed as well have nearly thousand terabyte warehouse. Hive the language used for Big Data supports Ad-Hoc Queries using HiveQL there are always better solutions. The alternate solution would be using SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) along with HiveQL. As there is no direct method to achieve there are few common workarounds already in place. A new ODBC driver from Klout has broken through the limitation and SQL Server Relation Engine can be used as an intermediate stage before SSAS. • SQL SERVER – QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON/OFF Explanation and Example – Question on Real World Usage

  This is a follow up blog post of SQL SERVER – QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON/OFF and ANSI_NULL ON/OFF Explanation. I wrote that blog six years ago and I had plans that I will write a follow up blog post of the same. Today, when I was going over my to-do list and I was surprised that I had an item there which was six years old and I never got to do that. In the earlier blog post I wrote about exploitation of the Quoted Identifier and ANSI Null. In this blog post we will see a quick example of Quoted Identifier. However, before we continue this blog post, let us see a refresh what both of Quoted Identifider do. QUOTED IDENTIFIER ON/OFF This option specifies the setting for use of double quotes. When this is on, double quotation mark is used as part of the SQL Server identifier (object name). This can be useful in situations in which identifiers are also SQL Server reserved words. In simple words when we have QUOTED IDENTIFIER ON, anything which is wrapped in double quotes becomes an object. E.g. -- The following will work SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE DATABASE "Test1" GO -- The following will throw an error about Incorrect syntax near 'Test2'. SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO CREATE DATABASE "Test2" GO This feature is particularly helpful when we are working with reserved keywords in SQL Server. For example if you have to create a database with the name VARCHAR or INT or DATABASE you may want to put double quotes around your database name and turn on quoted identifiers to create a database with the such name. Personally, I do not think so anybody will ever create a database with the reserve keywords intentionally, as it will just lead to confusion. Here is another example to give you further clarity about how Quoted Idenifier setting works with SELECT statement. -- The following will throw an error about Invalid column name 'Column'. SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO SELECT "Column" GO -- The following will work SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF GO SELECT "Column" GO Personally, I always use the following method to create database as it works irrespective of what is the quoted identifier’s status. It always creates objects with my desire name whenever I would like to create. CREATE DATABASE [Test3] I believe the future of the quoted identifier on or off is useful in the real world when we have script generated from another database where this setting was ON and we have to now execute the same script again in our environment again. Question to you - I personally have never used this feature as I mentioned earlier. I believe this feature is there to support the scripts which are generated in another SQL Database or generate the script for other database. Do you have a real world scenario where we need to turn on or off Quoted Identifiers. • cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

• Media server...serving files...............for a limited time only

  I’m new to Ubuntu and am seeking help with a media server I have built. I have a couple of HTPCs in my house running XBMC. I wanted to build one for the family room working double duty as a HTPC, and media server to share movies, TV shows, music, etc. on my Windows network. So using some spare old parts I had lying around I decided to go CRAZY and build my first Linux box. I used Ubuntu because it seemed to be the most user friendly variant, especially for people that are new to Linux. I had to do a few things to get the media files shared properly on my network: Made sure my two media drives auto-mount every time I boot the computer by editing the “fstab” file – “sudo nano /etc/fstab” Installed Samba - “sudo apt-get install samba” Set a password for Samba - “sudo smbpasswd –a USERNAME” Edited the Samba configuration file to make sure the computer was in my networks workgroup – “sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf” In the file manager (not sure if that’s the right name for it), I right-clicked my media folders and set the sharing and permissions. The sharing was done without guest access, and permissions were set to; Owner, Group, and Others - Access: Create and Delete Files. Adjusted the Power Management settings to never put the system into sleep mode. I checked to see if I had access to the files from a Windows 7 machine and I did (Woo Hoo!). But when I tried to play any of my video files from the Windows machine (using VLC media player), they would only play for about 2-5 minutes and then they would stop with an error message saying that the file could not be accessed (Booo...). I tried playing some files through XBMC running in Windows and they worked for a bit longer (about 10-15mins), but they also stopped playing. I installed the Linux version of XBMC on the server and played the files locally with no problems. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with the files themselves, it seems to be a sharing problem on my network. So my question to the Ubuntu gurus out there is: Did I miss adding/editing something in the Samba configuration file? Did I use the right method to share my media files (file manager vs. using the terminal)? Is it possible for the computer to still go to sleep without the screen going black (does that even make sense?). Are there any special settings in Ubuntu that I should be using since this computer as a media server (is there a media server mode?...!...?). Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. • Set maximum requests per IP in IIS7

  I have a web site deployed to IIS 7. One page it is has 15+ .js files linked to it. Last two files referenced in <head> tag (loaded last) get 403 forbidden response from server. I have enabled FailedRequestTracing and have been able to see a detailed error code which is 403.502. I suppose over a very short period of time I am just pulling to much and the IIS blocks me. Is there a way I can configure the limit to enable larger number of requests and get rid of 403.502 error?

• Unable to connect to mail server via IMAP and roundcube

  I am having trouble getting the final parts of my mail server up and working. I followed this tutorial to get everything set up on the mail server side. I have installed roundcube for webmail and configured it but it is saying "error connecting, connection refused" when attempting to connect to it using IMAP. This is thorough the "test imap" section of its installer. Also it is giving me an error message about perissions for it's log and temp folders but that's not as important as acutally getting mail to work. I have also tried connecting to the mail server using thunderbird however it cannot establish a connection either and I know my login information is correct. I know that the databases are working correctly based on the roundcube installer telling me that they have been "successfully initialized". Here are my firewall rules -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 25 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 465 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 487 -j ACCEPT -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 993 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -j DROP Which I set up in iptables. I have modified them from what I used in this tutorial I'm not sure what to try next. Any help would be wonderful! I am using Ubuntu 14.04 server, apache 2.4.7, roundcube 1.0.1, and the latest versions of dovecot and postfix. The email databases are contained in mysql. I am running this on a VPS server. UPDATE: I have changed from iptables to using ufw. I have run the following commands to set up a basic firewall with ufw. ufw default deny ufw allow ssh ufw allow http ufw allow https ufw allow imap ufw allow imaps ufw allow smtp I then used telnet to check all of the mail ports. But Port 993 isnt working even though ufw says both 993 and 993/tcp are open. What am I missing?

• Is it possible for a web-server to send more files than requested for, and have the browser accept them?

  I've created a basic web server for a school project, and it serves static content without a problem. I thought of having the server parse all htm/html files for links to .js/.css/image files, and send these files to the client without these files being requested by the client later. eg. The browser requests: index.htm The server responds with intex.htm and image.jpg I modified the server to send two distinct http responses for a "GET /index.html HTTP1.1" (one for the html page and one for the image), but the browser ended up requesting the image when it was good and ready. Is there any way to bypass this? (use a multipart response, perhaps) Will these files be accepted by most browsers, or will they be rejected for security reasons?

• How difficult will it be to switch DHCP from Windows 2000 to our network router?

  While I know a bit about networking, I am more of a programmer, and I have never set up a DHCP server. I have always allowed a router to assign IP addresses. However, my boss has asked me to switch out our old Win2k Domain Controller and DHCP server to a new server. The catch is that he wants to just use our router to assign IP addresses rather than have the new server do it. Is this going to be more than just disconnecting the old server? And if so, are there any documents or tips anyone can help me to make the transition a bit smoother? The new server will most likely have Windows Server 2008 R2. Any advice I can get on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

  How can I disable the local user account password complexity settings on Windows 2008 R2 "Server Core"? I am trying to migrate our windows 2003 web server to windows 2008 R2. I am trying to see if I can use the "Server Core" install, and it has been a very internet search intensive experience. What I can't find out how to do is to find out how to disable password complexity for local user accounts. While our user account generator currently creates nice strong passwords, there was a time when this was not the case and unfortunately forcing the users to change their password is not an option at this time. • Apache HTTP and WEblogic Plug-in Location Directive question

  All, We are using Weblogic Portal and Apache 2.x http server with the weblogic plug-in for apache for load-balancing. We have an application that right now can only be accessed from one of our managed servers. What I would like to do is us the Location directive to direct all requests for that page to the one managed server and I can't get it to work. The context that the portal tries to forward to is something like /MyWebApp?portalusername= (where equals a legitimate user. For example /MyWebApp?portalusername=joesmith All other applications and the plug-in is load balancing as expected because every now and then you'll get sent to teh second managed server for this particular application and its not deployed. I tried various things in the apache http.conf like the following but can't seem to get it work? Any suggestions?   I have a piece of cdosys code which runs correctly and generates e-mail with my SQL Server 2008 server talking to a MS Exchange 2003 Server. However the from name is not appearing on the e-mails when they arrive. Is there a fault in the code is it not possible this way?   I have seen this question pop-up on stackoverflow a few times but haven't found a good solution yet. I am looking for recommendations on Virtual Private Server Hosting featuring Windows Server 2008 plus MS SQL database capabilities. I have seen people suggest webhost4life.com, hostmysite.com and others but they do not offer windows server 2008 hosting, only 2003. I have also looked at mosso and aspnix.com. Mosso seems like a good move, but an hoping to find something below $100 a month and I have heard extremel mixed reviews on aspnix.com. Thanks for the help.

  Hello all, I've just started in a new company, and have been going over the setup of their Apache webserver conf files... only to find that they've had their apache servers set up as open proxies available to all the world for the last two months. I've already set ProxyRequests Off in the httpd.conf file and restarted the web server, but the access log file is still growing at a horrendous rate (about a gig a day). I noticed that another question was posted on here about this (http://serverfault.com/questions/63715/apache-hit-with-proxy-request), but their access log was supposedly returning 404 errors, while mine appears to be returning 403 and 404 codes... Is this correct?
