    Can I run a 64-bit VMWare image on a 32-bit machine? I've Googled this but there doesn't seem to be a conclusive answer. I know that it would have to be completely emulated and would run like a dog - but slow performance isn't necessarily an issue as I'm just interested in testing some of my background services code on 64-bit platforms.

  • Are Dynamic Prepared Statements Bad? (with php + mysqli)

    I like the flexibility of Dynamic SQL and I like the security + improved performance of Prepared Statements. So what I really want is Dynamic Prepared Statements, which is troublesome to make because bind_param and bind_result accept "fixed" number of arguments. So I made use of an eval() statement to get around this problem. But I get the feeling this is a bad idea.   • PHP fastest method of reading server response

    Hi there, im having some real problems with the lag produced by using fgets to grab the server's response to some batch database calls im making. Im sending through a batch of say, 10,000 calls and ive tracked the lag down to fgets causing the hold up in the speed of my application as the response for each call needs to be grabbed. I have found this thread http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=32806 which explains the problem quite well, but hes reading a file, not a server response so fread could be a bit tricky as i could get part of the next line, and extra stuff which i dont want. Any help much appreciated!

  • ASP.NET inline code in a server control

    Ok, we had a problem come up today at work. It is a strange one that I never would have even thought to try. <form id="form1" runat="server" method="post" action="Default.aspx?id=<%= ID %>" > Ok, it is very ugly and I wouldn't have ever tried it myself. It came up in some code that was written years ago but had been working up until this weekend after a bunch of updates were installed on a client's web server where the code is hosted. The actual result of this is the following html: <form name="form1" method="post" action="Default.aspx?id=&lt;%= ID %>" id="form1"> The url ends up like this: http://localhost:6735/Default.aspx?id=<%= ID %> Which as you can see, demonstrates that the "<" symbol is being encoded before ASP.NET actually processes the page. It seems strange to me as I thought that even though it is not pretty by any means, it should work. I'm confused. To make matters worse, the client insists that it is a bug in IE since it appears to work in Firefox. In fact, it is broken in Firefox as well, except for some reason Firefox treats it as a 0. Any ideas on why this happens and how to fix it easily? Everything I try to render within the server control ends up getting escaped. Edit Ok, I found a "fix" <form id="form1" runat="server" method="post" action='<%# String.Format("Default.aspx?id={0}", 5) %>' > But that requires me to call DataBind which is adding more of a hack to the original hack. Guess if nobody thinks of anything else I'll have to go with that.

  • Best way to structure AJAX for a Zend Framework application

    Sorry, but there's a lot of outdated and just plain bad information for Zend Framework, since it has changed so much over the years and is so flexible. I thought of having an AJAX module service layer, with controllers and actions that interact with my model. Easy, but not very extensible and would violate DRY. If I change the logistics of some process I'll have to edit the AJAX controllers and the normal controllers. So ideally I would load the exact same actions for both javascript and non-javascript users. I have thought about maybe checking for $_POST['ajax'], if it is set I would load a different (json'y) view for the data. Was wondering how/a good way to do this (front controller plugin I imagine?) or if someone can point me to an UP TO DATE tutorial that describes a really good way for building a larger ajax application. thx

  • How to use Hibernate SchemaUpdate class with a JPA persistence.xml?

I'd like to reuse this code in a JPA project, having no hibernate.cfg.xml file (and no .properties file), but a persistence.xml file (autodetected in the META-INF directory as specified by the JPA spec). I tried this too simple adaptation, Configuration cfg = new AnnotationConfiguration(); cfg.configure(); but it failed with that exception. Exception in thread "main" org.hibernate.HibernateException: /hibernate.cfg.xml not found Has anybody done that? Thanks.

  • Font advance calculation problem on Blackberry OS 5.0

    I am currently working on my own implementation of a tab bar for a BlackBerry app, where each tab bar has a title that is right aligned (i.e. the last character in each should be the same distance from the right hand side of the screen). To work out where to draw the text I am using the following calculation: screen width - advance of title - indent. The font I am using is 'BBAlpha Sans' (height 28). Using BlackBerry OS 4.6 everything seems to be calculated properly and the text is aligned when I move between tabs, however I am finding that when I use OS 5.0 it doesn't calculate the advance properly and as a result the alignment is off by maybe 5 pixels or so. With the default font (also BBAlpha Sans, but height 24 - for OS 5.0 at least) it works fine in both versions.. but I don't necessarily always want to use the default font/size, so any ideas what could be going wrong?     I know about Fourier Transforms, but I don't know how to apply it here, and I think that is over the top. I gave my ideas of the responses, but I really don't know what I'm looking for... Supposed that you form a low-pass spatial filter h(x,y) that averages all the eight immediate neighbors of a pixel (x,y) but excludes itself. a. Find the equivalent frequency domain filter H(u,v): My answer is to (a): 1/8*H(u-1, v-1) + 1/8*H(u-1, v) + 1/8*H(u-1, v+1) + 1/8*H(u, v-1) + 0 + 1/8*H(u, v+1) + 1/8*H(u+1, v-1) + 1/8*H(u+1, v) + 1/8*H(u-1, v-1) is this the frequency domain? b. Show that your result is again a low-pass filter. does this have to do with the coefficients being positive?

  • Suggestions for VS+Resharper keyboard shortcuts on a Mac

    I just upgraded to a Macbook Pro as my development machine but still primarily develop .Net applications with Visual Studio and Resharper (via VMWare Fusion). By far, the biggest obstacle I'm running into is getting used to the keyboard layout change (ex. not being able to do ALT-Insert). Do any of you Windows-on-Mac veterans have any suggestions on how to ease the pain of transitioning (without moving to an external keyboard)? Are you changing mappings via VMWare's keyboard preferences? Or are you using something like AutoHotkey? Any other windows development tips for a Mac newb?

  • jQuery and jQuery UI (Dual Licensing)

    OK I have read many posts regarding Dual Licensing using MIT and GPL licenses. But Im curious still, as the wording seems to be inclusive. Many of the Dual Licenses state that the software is licensed using "MIT AND GPL". The "AND" is what confuses me. It seems to me that the word "AND" in the terms, means you will be licensing the product using both licenses. Most of the posts, here on stackoverflow, say you can license the software using one "OR" the other. JQuery specifically states "OR", whereas JQuery UI specifically States "AND". Another Instance of the "AND" would be JQGrid. Im not a lawyer but, it seems to me that a legal interpretation of this would state that use of the software would mean that your using the software under both licenses. Has anyone who has contacted a lawyer gotten clarification or a definitive answer as to what is true? Can you use Dual licensed software products that state "AND" in the terms of agreement under either license?

    Hye guys, I included a screenshot to help clarify my problem: http://i40.tinypic.com/mcrnmv.jpg. I'm trying to calculate some kind of moving average and moving standard deviation. The thing is I want to calculate the coefficients of variation (stdev/avg) for the actual value. Normally this is done by calculating the stdev and avg for the past 5 years. However sometimes there will be observations in my database for which I do not have the information of the past 5 years (maybe only 3, 2 etc). That's why i want a code that will calculate the avg and stdev even if there is no information for the whole 5 years. Also, as you see in the observations, sometimes I have information over more than 5 years, when this is the case I need some kind of moving average which allows me to calculate the avg and stdev for the past 5 year. So if a company has information for 7 years I need some kind of code that will calculate the avg and stdev for, lets say, 1997 (by 1991-1996), 1998 (by 1992-1997) and 1999 (1993-1998). As i'm not very familiar with sas commands it should look (very very roughly) like: set var if year = i then stdev=stdev(year(i-6) untill year(i-1)) and average = avg(year(i-6) untill year(i-1)) Or something like this, I really have no clue, I'm gonna try and figure it out but it's worth posting it if I won't find it myself.   • creating matrix with probabilities

    Hi all, I want to generate a matrix of NxN to test some code that I have where each row contains floats as the elements and has to add up to 1 (i.e. a row with a set of probabilities). Where it gets tricky is that I want to make sure that randomly some of the elements should be 0 (in fact most of the elements should be 0 except for some random ones to be the probabilities). I need the probabilities to be 1/m where m is the number of elements that are not 0 within a single row. I tried to think of ways to output this, but essentially I would need this stored in a C++ array. So even if I output to a file I would still have the issue of not having it in array as I need it. At the end of it all I need that array because I want to generate a Market Matrix file. I found an implementation in C++ to take an array and convert it to the market matrix file, so this is what I am basing my findings on. My input for the rest of the code takes in this market matrix file so I need that to be the primary form of output. The language does not matter, I just want to generate the file at the end (I found a way mmwrite and mmread in python as well) Please help, I am stuck and not really sure how to implement this.
