• Upstart Script: Detect Shift Key Down At Boot

  I want to create a boot up potential which allows a different upstart/runlevel configurations to load based upon specific key downs at boot (or combos). How do I detect a key down event with an upstart script? I'm offering a bounty. The deal is you must provide a very simple piece of working code to do this. I will immediately check the code and verify that it works. I'm on 10.04 if that helps. Alternative methods to achieve the same result are acceptable, i.e., if grub could somehow show entries that would indicate a type of boot, where that boot would cp appropriate files to /etc/init. So, instead of a keydown solution, it would be a boot menu item solution and the way to get grub to copy upstart scripts to /etc/init. If possible.

• IE HTML Debugger Causing Issues with IE Enhanced Security

  In an effort to debug a Silverlight component on a page in SharePoint I opened the Developer Tools in Internet Explorer.  After choosing the Find > Select Element by Click option my page refreshed for some reason and a small bar appeared at the top of the page reading: You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. Please enable scripts and reload this page. After a quick look around the internet, some seemed to be suggesting that you have to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) in Server Manager.  Since this is one of the very first things I do when creating a VM, I figured the solution did not apply to me.  However, I decided to go ahead and enable IE ESC and then disable it again to see if that would fix the problem, and it did.  So if you see that error message in IE, the bar and you've already got IE ESC disabled, you can just enable it and disable it to get rid of the bar.

• Auto-provisioning hosting via API

  I've built a sort of 'software as a service' website package for a specific industry. What I am looking to do is create a payment gateway that allows users to subscribe-- and once the subscription is active, it would auto-provision a web hosting plan for them (a shared account on a server, probably in a chroot'd environment so each user would be insulated from others). Ideally it would auto-install a CMS as well. Tons of web hosts provide a simple reseller plan where I could manually create all the users' hosting accounts-- but so far none that I've found allow you to do this via API. Is there a way to do this short of writing custom shell scripts on something like an EC2 platform? I'd prefer to leave all the server maintenance in the hands of dedicated support staff rather than having to manually handle updates, backups, etc. Thanks for any tips.

  Well I have installed avast anti virus on Ubuntu 12.04. But after updating, it crashes! So I have made some tweaks like below: Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open the Terminal. When it opens, run the command below. sudo gedit /etc/init.d/rcS Type your password and hit Enter. When the text file opens, add the line: sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 Make sure the line you added is before: exec /etc/init.d/rc S This is what it should look like: #! /bin/sh # rcS # # Call all S??* scripts in /etc/rcS.d/ in numerical/alphabetical order # sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 exec /etc/init.d/rc S Save the file. Reboot. My question is: Did I do anything wrong? I mean as I have made some tweaks, will it lower the security of Avast down like viruses do? Please if you are a programmer check this if it contains bug or harmful intentions... Thanks.

  I am always conscious to keep a record of all operations performed on my database servers. Operations through T-SQL in an SSMS query pane can easily be saved in query files. For table modifications through SSMS designer I have predefined setting to generate T-SQL scripts. However there are numerous database and server level tasks that I use the SSMS GUI and I would like to have a script of these changes for later reference. Examples of such actions through the SSMS GUI are backup/restore, changing compatibility level of a database, manipulating permissions, dealing with database or log files or creating/manipulating any login/user. • How do global cancel/exit commands work in bash?

  As I have done multiple times before, I've written bash scripts, and just general commands that go nowhere. They just blink the little command line cursor at me for infinity until I control+C the command. When I do cancel the command, what exactly is going on when I do this? Am I somehow stopping and killing the current PID I'm working on? Does it jump to a different run-level and execute something to terminate the command? On a slightly different note, I've never been able to figure out how to set up something like this in a script or program I've worked on. Since I mostly program in Ruby, can I setup something like a certain key press stops the program? Every time I've looked into doing something similar, I always end up getting hung up when it comes to user input, whether that is a loop waiting for a condition, or something like this: def Break() user_break = gets.strip end def Main() Function1() Break() Function2() Break() [...] end It seems and is incredibly bulky, and definitely isn't easily scaled up or down.

  I was trying to deploy a SharePoint App for the first time and ran into an error about SideLoading not being enabled on the site. The solution is fairly simple – you just have enable the Developer feature on the site.  Unfortunately, it’s a hidden feature so you have to do it through PowerShell.  While searching the internet for the command to enable the feature I kept running into really long scripts that seemed overly complicated.  Fortunately, Jeff (a friend at work) sent me this snippet that is very concise and does the job: Enable-SPFeature e374875e-06b6-11e0-b0fa-57f5dfd72085 –url http://yoursharepointbox/site/ Obviously, you will need to update the URL to match your environment!

  I have been working with Database Development and the aspects that come with it, the pain and the joy of moving from Dev to QA and then on to Production.  Source Control has a place in Dev, and that is where the baselines should be established. Where am I going with this? I have been working with Redgate’s Source Control 3.0, and I am seeing some features that are great for the process of moving from Dev to … well something that allows for quite a level of control.  We are not only talking about scripting the structure of a database, but creating a baseline, working with migration scripts, and integrated with Redgate’s Schema Compare.  There is a detailed paper that will be posted here in the next day or so to provide step by step information of the process to define your baseline in Dev and then take it to the desired destination.   I’ve been gradually adding features to my utility that scripts the configuration of a SQL Server.  Since my last post I’ve added the following features: Skip any encrypted object in a database Script alerts, alert notifications and operators Script audits Always script model, master and msdb to capture any user-defined objects in those databases Logins are now scripted so that everything for a login is grouped together. There’s a second section in the logins that handles default databases.  In many cases a login’s default database is a mirror target and can’t be set.  This is now handled gracefully.  It also includes a separate section for all default databases so those can be quickly set in the event of a disaster. Script credentials Script proxy accounts Script database mail My goal is still to get everything outside a database scripted.  This release is enough that I can keep my mirror target servers in sync with their principals.

• Deleted files not increasing available free space on Ubuntu (as reported by df -h)

  I am writing data munging scripts (python and bash), to munge data and import large quantities of text files into a database. I am currently in the test phase, so I am generating several K's of files and deleting them (the files consume about 20G of space). After a test run, I delete the files (sometimes without having imported into the database). I notice that there is a steady decrease in the amount of free space on my disk (as reported by df -h). I don't understand this, as I use rm * (in the data directory), and in the cases where I use Nautilus, I empty the Trash bin as well. Similarly, I notice that when I import the data into the (postgresql) database, and then delete the data from the tables using DELETE FROM tablename;, the size consumed in the postgresql data directory does not go down either. Currently, I have lost approximately 200G from hard drive, and I need to reclaim that - but don't know what to do to reclaim it - any ideas?. I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS + postgresql 8.4

  I've been managing server installations both on and off Ubuntu flavor for some time - I've become quite adjusted to /etc/init.d/ for restarting servcies. Now I get this message: root@tatooine:~# /etc/init.d/mysql status Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service mysql status Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the status(8) utility, e.g. status mysql mysql start/running, process 14048 This seems to have been brought about in the latest LTS of Ubuntu - why? What's so bad about /etc/init.d/ and what/is there a difference between service and /etc/init.d/?

  I managed to get as far as optirun glxgear, which worked perfectly, but I am unable to define settings for a specific shell script. In its wiki it says this: optirun [options] <application> [application-parameters] and I don't know what option has to be nor the application-parameter. (I'm really new) If my file is /home/hon/hon.sh, how can I execute it via terminal? If I just type optirun hon or optirun hon.sh it shows this error: /usr/bin/vglrun: 296: exec: hon: not found there I try to find the file /usr/bin/vglrun. • Is it possible to use two different shells for different terminal windows?

  Is it possible to use another shell for scripts than for standard terminal use? The problem is, i use fish as shell at the moment and i find i very convenient. But i would like to learn a bit of shell programming in Ubuntu. Since there are differences between those two it would be nice, to work with fish and bash at the same time, perhaps in different terminal windows? i know i can write a shell script and have to put the interpreter in the beginning. But for testing developing at commandline i would find it useful to fast switch between shells or use two different terminal windows with different shells in one session at the same time?

• Need private personal access to ~three PHP pages

  I would like secure access to the text output by three PHP scripts (the text output is JavaScript and html) . The security level is much less then financial data but important none-the-less. I have considered purchasing AND studying https and SSL certificates. Hostgator charges an extra $2/month for a private ip plus $50+ anually for a certificate. This is more then I want to spend for this project (time + money). Is there a simpler solution that is: less expensive easier to implement. I'm open to different approaches.

I could start with the official Lua tutorials, but I would rather study scripts that were written specifically for games and learn the syntax from there as I believe this is faster and more related to what I want. Can you recommend tutorials in video or text that are very detailed in explaining the code? Or some open source game with heavily commented code? What I want is something detailed that walks me through it, so I start understanding both the syntax and how each piece relate to each other, like "First of all, install this, this and that." • khotkey script calling bindings stop to work on switching to Quantal

  I have many scripts which I call with khotkey. For example I have a hotkey which executes: bk_starts_or_brings.bash 'Konsole' konsole On updating to Quantal -- it stops to work: if I call that key -- it searches bk_starts_or_brings.bash 'Konsole' konsole in google in default web-browser. I tried: sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms execstack dh-modaliases fakeroot libqtgui4 When I start the command from konsole -- it works as expected, but when I call it with khotkey -- it doesn't. I guess someone shadows my keybiding. Or some daemon is not run on startup.

• Joining and compressing all javascript files together - good idea?

  Curently, I avoid loading any unnecesary scripts on individual pages of my site. I have a class that remembers all javascript files that were requested during PHP processing and adds them to HTML. I was just thinking that I could merge the current set of files, save the result in special directory and let the browser download just one, big file. Since the number of possible combinations is not very high, I would end up with about 10 combined files for different pages. I've never seen that on any site. What are the reasons not to do it? I need very fast page load.

• PHP - Data Access Layer

  I am currently reviewing a code base and noticed that a majority of the calls (along with DB connections) are just buried inside the PHP scripts. I would have assumed that like other languages they would have developed some sort of data access layer (Like I would do in .Net or Java) for all of the communication to the DB (or implemented MVC, etc). Is this still a common pattern in PHP or is there alternative methodologies/patterns for this technology? I am just trying to understand why the subs would have developed it this way. Any insight/info on how experienced developers design an approach data access in PHP would be very much appreciated.
