• Unable to install Skype ("Unmet dependencies" error)

  Trying to install skype on Ubuntu 12, I faced and issue. When I type: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install skype I get an error Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done skype is already the newest version. You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: skype : Depends: lib32stdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-21) but it is not going to be installed Depends: lib32asound2 (> 1.0.14) but it is not going to be installed Depends: ia32-libs but it is not going to be installed Depends: libc6-i386 (>= 2.7-1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: lib32gcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1-21+ia32.libs.1.19) but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. • How to explain bad software to non-technical people?

  In discussing software development with non-technical people (customers, business owners, project sponsors, etc.), I often resort to analogies and metaphors. It's relatively easy and effective to use a "house" or other metaphor for describing the size and complexity of new development. However, we often inherit someone else's code or data, and this approach doesn't seem to hold up as well when trying to explain why we're gutting something that already seems to work. Of course we can point to cycle time and cost to be saved in the future but this generally means nothing to business folks. I know doctors can say "just take this pill," but I'm not sure that software devs have the same authority. Ideas? EDIT: Let me add a bit to the discussion. The specific project I'm talking about has customers that don't realize (or care) about specific aspects of the system we're retiring (i.e., they think it was just fine): The system would save a NEW RECORD every time someone updated a field The system contained tables for reference data. These tables had new records added every day, even though they were duplicates of previous records. And there was no way to tie the reference data used for a particular case at the time it was closed. This is like 99% of the data in the old system. The field NAMES also have spaces, apostrophes and other inappropriate characters in them, making everything harder to work with. In addition to the incredible amount of duplicate data, they have around 1000 XLS files with data they want added to the system. Previously, they would do a spreadsheet for each case in the database, IN ADDITION TO what they typed into the database. Getting rid of this old, unneeded information and piping in the XLS data comprises about 80% of the total project effort, and was not something we could accurately predict. I'm trying to find a concrete way to describe how bad this thing was, mostly so that the customer will understand why the migration process has been so time-consuming. The actual coding was done pretty quickly and the new system works fine, but without the old data they won't be happy. Sorry to get into the weeds, but most of the answers I've seen so far are pretty basic scope/schedule/cost things. I've been doing this for 15 years, so this really is more of a reflective, philosophical question - but without some of the details it can be difficult to really appreciate the awful beauty of this problem.

• Can you be a manager and a programmer at the same time?

  Managing other programmers while you are yourself a part of the programming work force. It's a very common scheme, at least in the companies I worked for. Can you be a good programmer or a good manager if you do both at the same time? I'm questioning the effectiveness of an individual that has to be in two very different roles, requiring very different skills, environment, concentration, organization, etc.

• Has the Ubuntu heating problem for Sony Vaio users been solved?

  I use Sony Vaio VPCEA23en with graphics card ATI Radeon HD 5145 and have been using Ubuntu 11.10 and recently upgraded to 12.04 beta, however the problem of overheating (60-70) still persists. I have installed the graphics driver properly. Are there some features of Ubuntu that cause this problem? I would have no problem uninstalling them; Or will using a lighter version of Ubuntu (lubuntu) solve this problem? Right now I am using Win7 and would like to switch to Ubuntu ASAP.

  Imagine you have funding for a team of social scientists to study open source software development for a number of years (long time in software development, I know, but a short time for scientific research). These scientists have competencies to investigate psychological and sociological aspects of open source software development (i.e. how coders think, feel, and behave, along with how communities work or do not work). They are also technically equipped to understand code and coding, have access to all sorts of statistical and machine learning techniques, however their focus is on social aspects of open source software development, not technical. For you, as an open source software developer, what would be the research questions that would be interesting for you to have answered by such a group of scientists?

• Cannot install build essential from the CD?

  After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I tried to install build-essential from the Ubuntu installation CD. I put the cd in the cdrom and in the software repositories i checked the box install from cd(Ubuntu 10.10 release Maverick Meerkat). Then I reloaded the software repositories. The synaptic manager then tried to download some repository related files but failed to do so as i didn't have internet connection. Then I open a terminal and wrote sudo apt-get install build-essential. It prompted me if I want to install build essential y/N. I typed y but the terminal showed some errors and was not installed. I also tried to add the CD in the software repositories. I clicked add and it prompted me to insert a CD while the CD was still inside the cdrom. I clicked "ok" then and it showed it could not find any cd. What is wrong?

• Project frozen - what should I leave to the people after me?

  So the project I've been working on is now going to be frozen indefinitely. It is possible that if and when the project unfreezes again, it won't be assigned to me or anybody from the current team. Actually, we inherited the project after it had been frozen before, but there was nothing left by the prior team to help us understand even the basic needs of the project, so we wasted a lot of time getting to know the project well. My question is what do you think we should do to help the people after us to best understand the needs of the project, what we have done, why we've done it, etc. I am open to other ideas of why should we leave some tracks to the others that will work on this project also. Some steps we already have taken: technical documentation (not full but at least there is some); source-control system history; estimations on which parts of the project need improvement and why we think so; bunch of unit tests. issue tracker with all the tickets we've done (EDIT) What do you think of what we've already prepared and what else can we do?

I am confident that our region has many professional developers as well as many graduating students whom who really benefit from a conference. I would like to ask the following questions: What steps or advice would one take if the task was given to set up a local developers conference? What would the costing look like? (excluding building/hosting of website(s)) How would one build interest and promote this? How would I approach, Local Companies & Universities to collaborate with them? • How important is to sacrifice your free time for accomplishing goals? [closed]

  I was reading a book about XP programming and about agile teams. While I was reading, I saw this scenario. I've never worked with a development team (just in school). So I would like what do you opine on this situation: Your boss has asked you to deliver software in a time that can only be possible to meet the project team asking if you want to work overtime without pay. All team members have young children. Discuss whether it should accept this request from your boss or should persuade the team to give their time to the organization rather than their families. What could be significant factors in the decision? As a programmer, you are offered an upgrade as project manager, but his feeling is that you can have a more effective contribution in a technical role in one administrative. Write when you should accept that promotion. Somethimes, I sacrifice my free time for accomplishing hits at work, so it's very important to me to know your opinion base of your experience.

• How to determine the version and origin of proprietary drivers installed by Additional Drivers?

  How can I tell which version and from which repository the Additional Drivers tool is trying to install the fglrx graphics driver? It says that I have a different version of the driver in use. I installed the driver from maverick/restricted and apt-cache tells me it's from a regular Ubuntu mirror. The installed version is the same as the candidate version. Can I get Additional Drivers to tell me what it would install if I activated the driver through it? Is it possible Additional Drivers just assumes it's a different version since it was installed by a different process?

• What time planning tools do you use?

  I'm trying to get a better overview of my tasks, and I'm looking for a tool which would let me enter tasks (everything from 2 hour tasks to 2 week tasks) and then simply let me organize these tasks on a timeline. I'm thinking that all tasks would have an estimated duration, and I could then prioritize these tasks by moving them along the timeline to prioritize them. The timeline would then show me the "tasks stack" and how far into the future i'm occupied. I'm not looking for an issue/bug handling system, but simply a tool which lets me get an overview of my tasks. I guess we're more into the category of resource planning. What tools do you use for this?

• Energy saving with two batteries (Gigabyte S1080 and similar)

  my today question is: how do I manage a tablet (Gigabyte 1080) with an additional battery in Ubuntu ? The control bar shows two separate batteries but starts to suck all the energy from the secundary battery, not leaving any power in it and ruining it (if I don't remove it earlier), and then starts with the primary battery. • How do you handle unfound resources?

  For example your game expects a certain asset to be loaded what is the best way to handle it if the resource isn't found, for example: Texture* grassTexture = LoadTexture("Grass.png");// returns NULL as texture is not found. Mesh* car = LoadMesh("Car.obj");// returns NULL as 3d mesh is not found What if for some reason the resource wasn't found e.g. deleted by user, misspelling while in development ? Should I use Assertions (which is only useful while in development? Exit the game gracefully ? or even thrown an exception and try to handle it? On a separate question, if I used a handle system instead of pointers (which I am already working on) I don't see how this would help me recover from unfound resources, Does a handle system help in situations like this?

• Plug-in or framework recommendation for showing content preview fly-over in CMS

  The requirement is to have either front end plug-in or back end processor that generates the preview of contents (such as images, videos, PDF files, HTML pages) in a preview popup when user mouse hovers the content. I did some research on this, seems that there are assorted jquery plugins for each type of files, but what we are looking for is a framework that handles all types of file previews. Ideally, we want to generate preview images on the backend, considering the cost of retrieving content on front end. I did find some open source or proprietary CMS that provides this feature, but usually they are shipped as one suite and the API for file preview might not be open. Is there any java or jquery framework that handles file preview? Thanks a lot

• Releasing Mobile Application under multiple platforms, same time or?

  I've always had this idea circling around until I am facing this issue. We made an android app, it is ready, but we are planning to release the same app on iOS and possibly Windows Phone; Now, should we just release the Android app and promise the clients that the iOS version is coming soon (create anticipation before release) or delay the release until the iOS version is ready ? Same applies if we have a premium and free version, should we release the free version and promise that the better premium is coming soon, or release them both the same time ? Best Regards

• Getting started on Large Projects

  So I just graduated from my College with a B.S. in Comp. Science (although it was a good school, we're the only accredited CS department in our state.....for w/e that means lol) I feel like im a decent programmer, not amazing....but not terrible. Anyways I got my first job about 2 weeks ago, it's a pretty entry level job: firmware development/tester (I know I know people look down on testers...but I gotta start somewhere). Anyways there isn't a whole lot of coding to be had right now (mostly simple stuff) but here soon I have the option of helping out with development (which is what I want to do) Thing is....I have NEVER worked on a huge project. I mean in school sure we had "group" projects but nothing really big. So I'm not super familiar with HUGE classes and such (main language was C++)....Is this something I'll just get used to with time? Some fellow students were used to that with internships and such...but I never got that chance. My job was mostly a "one man job" kinda thing. Mostly little things. Plus in class we never did huge projects anyways. So how do you guys I guess "plan" out these things? Do you use a whiteboard and plan out classes and such....or what. Also...another worry of mine is that I have to use google......ALOT for examples of code, because sometimes I just don't get how something works. Is this normal? It makes me feel sorta.....stupid I guess. I mean "technically" i've had 4-5 years coding experience......but it really only feels like I had 2 years of REAL experience. If that makes any sense? • Am I programming too slow?

  I've only been a year in the industry and I've had some problems making estimates for specific tasks. Before you close this, yes, I've already read this: http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/648/how-to-respond-when-you-are-asked-for-an-estimate and that's about the same problem I'm having. But I'm looking for a more specific gauge of experiences, something quantifiable or probably other programmer's average performances which I should aim for and base my estimates. The answers range from weeks, and I was looking more for an answer on the level of a task assigned for a day or so. (Note that this doesn't include submitting for QA or documentations, just the actual development time from writing tests if I used TDD, to making the page, before having it submitted to testing) My current rate right now is as follows (on ASP.NET webforms): Right now, I'm able to develop a simple data entry page with a grid listing (no complex logic, just Creating and Reading) on an already built architecture, given one full day's (8 hours) time. Adding complex functionality, and Update and Delete pages add another full day to the task. If I have to start the page from scratch (no solution, no existing website) it takes me another full day. (Not always) but if I encounter something new or haven't done yet it takes me another full day. Whenever I make an estimate that's longer than the expected I feel that others think that I'm lagging a lot behind everyone else. I'm just concerned as there have been expectations that when it's just one page it should take me no more than a full day. Yes, there definitely is more room for improvement. There always is. I have a lot to learn. But I would like to know if my current rate is way too slow, just average, or average for someone no longer than a year in the industry.

• Brocken package manager due to incorrect Banshee package

  Sup, so, I'm not familiar with linux at all so help is much appreciated. I've been trying to boot my pc up from a live CD unsuccessfully. I get to the stage at which there are the options to test without installing or install or so on where I select 'Install Ubuntu.' Here it relays through some fast DOS commands until it reaches 'end trace' and then, eventually, 'Killed.' I have already got a functional 11.10 version installed, could this be a problem? The reason I am attempting a reinstall is because the package system is damaged inside 11.10, a problem I can't seem to solve. If I try to install any new software from within the software centre it tells me that two banshee extensions must be removed. I try to remove these from inside the terminal, using apt-get remove, which results in:** You might want to run apt-get -f install to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies. banshee-extension-ubuntuonemusicstore : Depends: banshee (>= 2.2.1) but 2.2.0-1ubuntu2 is to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. The software centre suggests that I disable all third party repositories and run apt-get install -f I have done so but the package system remains damaged and apt-get install -fattempts to install banshee 2.2.1 but returns: Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/banshee_2.2.1-1ubuntu3_i386.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I have also tried apt-get update (runs fine) and apt-get upgrade. The upgrade command apt-get upgrade results in: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these.
