• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.

• Should you put personal beliefs in your program?

  Recently I've found two examples of programmer's personal beliefs in programs that have removed or crippled useful functionality uTorrent using KB (rarely used) vs Kb (what most ISPs and other programs use as their metric) in their current connection speed. Various attempts by others and me to give options to at least give an option to show in Kb have ended with "ISPs should use KB" Kleopatra (gpg4Win key manager) not having PGP Key Pictures since they "give a false sense of security" and "increase the size of certificates". While the latter is true, the former is debatable. Both of these hurt the program and its usefulness to me. uTorrent's forums used to be filled with people saying they have 10 Mb download pipe but uTorrent only goes up to 2 MB (not knowing that Mb != MB), and with feature requests to show in Mb. Kleopatra has lost usefulness to me since I don't have the functionality to add pictures to PGP keys. These all are political statements; developers attempting to make change in, in their minds important, issues. But should this come at a cost to end user functionality? If a programmer heavily believes X but everyone else believes Y, should the programmer refuse to add support for Y because in their mind X is horrible? In short, should a programmer make political statements in their program?

• How to get sharing options to stick - ubuntu 12.04

  I'm having a really hard time trying to get my sharing set up on my 12.04 system. I've tried both desktop version and server - I'm a bit of a linux n00b, so I need a GUI, command line is beyond me and no time to learn it (not till after I get the shares setup, at least) My problem is, whenever I try to set permissions in Nautilus, it just reverts back to the default which is to "none" Basically when I choose an option... it doesn't stick. I can create shares, and it asks me if I want to add permissions automatically - but they do not stick either. When I go to look at the shared folders in Windows (or even on my Android Phone, or Mac) it gives me permissions errors and doesn't let me log in, despite me clicking "allow guest access" I have no idea what to do or where to go. I've tried searching forums and google, and I've tried everything I come across - no avail. I've even tried Mint builds to see if it's different, no change there either. Please help! I really want to setup a server to share my media files and do backups in my house. Thanks for your help!

  Possible Duplicate: What are the best ways to increase your site's position in Google? One of the most basic SEO techiniques is including accurate description below 64 characters in the tags of each page. I was wondering if is considered ethical SEO to set up the contents based on a search keyword for example. So if the user searches for 'apples pictures' for example, then the title of the webpage would be 'apple pictures'. Note that the search keywords accurately describe my website contents because the title will always relate to the body of the webpage and 85-90% of the terms searched for will return corresponding results. Is this considered a good seo practice and is it ethical? Also, can someone explain what the idea is behind "linking"? I read somewhere that it is a good seo practice to link other websites and it is good when other websites link you. Does this mean that I should include as many links to other websites as possible (that are somehow relevant to my websites goal), also if I joined forums/services and posted my website url in the signature, would that still be considered other websites linking me?

• Tell me why I should bother using Linux if it's all about problems getting the OS to install or work properly? [closed]

  Why should I spend day's trying to get Ubuntu to either install and/or work properly? I'm using an Acer Timeline X laptop and if I install 10.04 the wireless doesn't work, and if I try installing 11.04 it either won't install, or if it installs it's full of bugs causing my computer to freeze all the time. So please, I'm all open ears. Someone give me one or two good reasons to continue wasting time (in hope it eventually works) before I decide to focus my time on other things like productivity (using Windows like I've been doing successfully the last 10 years). This is the second time I give Ubuntu a try, the first time was in 2010 using Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu Desktop, and it ended with me shifting back to Windows since I had spent more time getting everything to work than actually working while trying Ubuntu. I really don't understand why it needs to be like this. Why go on trying when all I see is forums full of discussions about problems which people are having difficulties fixing. Or maybe there is just one special type of computer which works well with Linux? Would very much like to know which computer that is. SO please, if it's not to much trouble I really want to here from someone who has something good to say about going through all this trouble just to get a working environment up and running since I already have a working environment up and running called Windows. • Dynamic libraries are not allowed on iOS but what about this?

  I'm currently using LuaJIT and its FFI interface to call C functions from LUA scripts. What FFI does is to look at dynamic libraries' exported symbols and let the developer use it directly form LUA. Kind of like Python ctypes. Obviously using dynamic libraries is not permitted in iOS for security reasons. • Issues with Cinnamon?

  I just recently switched my system over to Ubuntu 12.10, and decided on Cinnamon as my environment-- it all worked fine, at first. But I was poorly educated and started using Compiz and Emerald along with it--Setting both as replacements in startup processes. I now know, that's a big, big mistake. Now when loading Cinnamon, I am greeted to my background image, and only that. My only options seem to be to open a terminal. I was advised to attempt muffin --replace and mutter --replace Neither to any avail, the terminal closes, and I cannot load another one unless I completely reload. I went back to Unity, purged and autoremoved Cinnamon, emerald, and compizconfig, and attempted to reinstall Cinnamon, thinking that would solve the problem--no, it came back just as broken as before. So, I reinstalled ubuntu, then cinnamon---still broken. I'm assuming I must find a way to remove the replace commands-- but as I have no menu, I'm not positive I can do that. Is there any way I can access the startup processes via terminal? I'd think though, if I completely removed Cinnamon, all configurations would be gone too, so, it's just not making much sense. Is there some kind of reset I could possibly do? I've been browsing forums and questions here, all leading to things I'd already done, so, it can't hurt to ask for myself. I apologize if you would rather I have posted this over at mint. Next time, I will definitely check compatibility instead of assuming something just has to work. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! ****EDIT***** It seems although it didn't allow me to do it before, I was now allowed to access the settings and startup processes for Cinnamon via Unity, and, after quickly removing aforementioned processes- I'm up and running again.

• Remote server's x menus without vino, vnc etc

  A question where both google searches, as well as askubuntu and ubuntu forums searches fails though rephrasing the question a number of times. Have a Lubuntu server with some storage and functions and a lubuntu laptop. Previous when running winXP, I had Xming, could start a x-session on the server, got the lxpanel on the laptop, switching, running x-programs without a hitch though the lxpanel menu. A very neat and convenient solution. However the winXP crashed, me moving to lubuntu also for the laptop. still things work, I ssh into the server and can start x-programs without a hitch. But, as with all graphical desktops, I at times need access to the lx menus on the server to find programs and here the problems arise, most finding I got talk about installing VNC, vino etc overkills, avoiding existing X-integration between the servers. I'll like to do as I did with Xming, see the menu system on the server, in my "client's" xwin? Just to see the servers installed software without colliding with the laptop X-server, just using it as normal X-apps.

  Hello... very good day everybody! I'm having some problems regarding the Ubuntu 12.4.01 LTS. For this reason, cordially i ask everyone's help. Such problems can be summed up in network (01) and audio (02)! 01) I can not set a DSL network settings in the "upper bar" (on side the clock). When i create the connection, the system says that the cables modem are disconnected! I can only use the internet if i set up a connection at terminal through the command "pppoeconf". • Suggestions for a Live chat software on websites for customer support?

  Recommendations needed. We want to get in touch with customers via live chat. Requirements: chat window customisable to mingle with website theme (colors etc) preferably the window should be within webpage and not only pop-out/popup. ease of use by customer minimally intrusive should have triggers/Alerts to backend side. for ex: user is unable to fill-up signup form or something, we should be able to offer help to user and this chat window automatically shows to user. What is the cost ? UPDATE: After R&D we also narrowed down to comm100 and liveperson, and we will go with comm100. LP is best commerical soln. but comm100 is a good free soln. We go with comm100 as starting point. But it gives out exceptions alerts sometimes in the dashboard. Can it be configured for chat invitations triggered on certain conditions. Currently only a timebased trigger is available. Any other major difference between these two ?

• How can i install ubuntu on my ntfs hdd without formatting?

  My hdd is just one partition in ntfs (500gb) and 430 gb is used by my photos/movies/music etc which i never will want to lose. Actually i installed ubuntu on a usb flash drive (using it right now) but it is too slow that way. But my problem is : My computer is damaged ( maybe chipset or but not sure) and none of the windows versions (xp,vista,7) works on my pc. I get blue screen error as soon as windows startup logo shows. But ubuntu just works flawless. That means i cannot use wubi. I wanted to shrink my hdd without losing data (which can be done in windows) but found nothing about that on ubuntu forums. Is this possible? Or install ubuntu on my ntfs filesystem? Note : I don't have chance to backup 400 gbs of data. Sorry for my question if it's written a bit compex. I hope you get the point and someone has an idea ;)

  MIX10was really a fantastic conference for Telerik! We had great talks, many customers stopped by our booth and we've got a lot of great feedback for our Silverlight Controls. We had this question on the booth over and over again and it is no doubt that the WP7 development is a hot topic now. • ASP.NET MVC 3 (C#) Software Architecture

  I am starting on a relatively large and ambitious ASP.NET MVC 3 project and just thinking about the best way to organize my code. The project is basically going to be a general management system that will be capable of supporting any type management system whether it be a blogging system, cms, reservation system, wikis, forums, project management system, etc…, each of them being just a separate 'module'. For those who don't want to read the long blog post the basic idea is that the core system itself is nothing more than a users system with an admin interface to manage the users system. Then you just add on module as you need them and the module I will be creating is a simple blog post to test it out before I move on to the big module which is a project management system. Now I am just trying to think of the best way to structure this so that it is easy for users to add in there own modules but easy for me to update to core system without worrying about the user modifying the core code. I think the ideal way would be to have a number of core projects that user is specifically told not to modify otherwise the system may become unstable and future updates would not work. When the user wants to add in there own modules, they would just add in a new project (or multiple projects). The thing is I am not sure that it is even possible to use multiple projects all with their own controllers, razor view template, css, javascript, etc... in one web application. Ideally each module would have some of it own razor view templates, css, javascript, image files and also need access to some of the core razor view templates, css, javascript, image files which would is in a separate project. It is possible to have 1 web application run off of controllers, razor view templates, css, javascript, image files that are store in multiple projects? Is there a better was to structure this to allow the user to easily add in module with having to modify the core code?

• Wireless BMC4311 driver install

  Exasperated with Ubuntu 12.04 and BCM4311 driver. HP2133 (was SUSE 10) Installed 12.04 in March. It ran well until November with no updates) then updates killed my wireless controller. Trolled forums & other for fix. Tried sudo -apt-get ing & gedit ing. Finally got it working (on full update with STA driver) Hwew!—thought that was it, only to fail again after 3-4 days. Tried all the fixes again but sudo -apt-get ing & gedit ing does not fix. I'm not without experience either: first 'boot-loader' I/P from 20 switch panel, seq to 4096 bit core-store: run to I/P larger processes from paper tape reader. Gone thru acoustic-coupled networks-to-billboards (before 'the net') pre-DOS, DOS, Windows 3.1 & all the others. This is a tough problem. Any advice?

• Terminal/Putty showing control characters (^M) after updating

  I updated my system yesterday afternoon using the recommended updates from Update Manager. After it completed, I shutdown my system and went home for the day. I come in this morning and I am getting control characters displayed when using vi in both the standard terminal emulator, putty, and putty inside of my Windows virtual that I run with VirtualBox. I have made no other system changes and I cannot figure out how this occurred. It's as if every text file I have was created in DOS. I've searched the forums and I haven't found any answers. I am using xterm as my emulator and I checked with 3 of my coworkers and none of them are having this problem so we do not believe it is a server side issue. Especially since I've checked 3 different servers. There's nothing in my .profile other than PATH variables so I'm using the same terminal settings as everyone else. Some files are fine (I can open and read both /etc/environment and my .profile) but most of any kind of server generated log file is trash. Running cat or head on the same file displays the contents without the characters. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Java SE 8 (with JavaFX) Developer Preview Release for ARM

  In an effort to get ARM developers testing Java SE 8 before the scheduled release later this year a Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM has been made available. This release has been tested on the Raspberry PI but should work on other ARM platforms. In addition to the new Java SE features, this release provides specific support of hard float GPU on the Raspberry PI. The support for hard float GPU has been anticipated by a number of developers. Additionally, this release includes support of an optimized JavaFX. Specific configurations of JDK 8 on ARM are defined below: Java FX is supported on ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) Supported platforms without Java FX: ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) ARM architecture v7 (VFP, little endian) ARM architecture v5 (soft float, little endian) Linux x86 The download page includes setup instructions for a Raspberry PI device as well as demos and samples. • How do I understand the partition table? (I want to start over.)

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed through wubi on my laptop (it came with Windows 7 preinstalled). This was my first foray into Linux, and I'm here to stay. I have no use for Windows, and yet I must manually choose not to boot into it! Should I shrink the Windows partition to something negligible and grow the Linux one using something like gparted or fdisk, and just be content that everything runs? In that case, I need to understand the filesystems. Which is which? • How can I disable recent documents in Unity?

  How do I disable the tracking and display of recently opened files (and whatever else is remembered) in a default installation of Ubuntu 11.10? (Note that this is not a duplicate of How can I keep recent files from appearing in Unity?, since that question and its answers are concerned with temporary and specific filtering. I want to disable it completely for a single user account.) Okay, to deflect the inevitable and expand on my motivation... While trawling the usual forums and Google results for a solution, it (unsurprisingly) seems that the near-universal use cases for this request are either browsing porn or Warhammer research. And the obvious solution to this is to create another user account to contain all evidence. However, this is not why I'm asking, and I don't say that to get all high and mighty about it, it's because this answer won't help. (Even though I really don't have any interest in Warhammer, and I have no idea how that paint pot and brush ended up in my drawer, no that's not glue on my thumb, etc.) My actual use case is that I use my personal laptop for presentations in different circles of my life. I have a user account set up with all the settings I like for presentations (shortcuts, small launcher, default associations, etc). But I don't want an accidental keystroke (or the find dialog) to display other recent presentations I've given, or the files I used in composing the presentation, or whatever. I also don't want to have to recreate this profile for every single presentation I might give. I just want a nice little isolated, memoryless, clean corner of my notebook for public display.
