  • Ruby: intelligent patch/update

    Hi, After being blown away by the greatness of irb and rails console, I am loving the dynamical parts of the language more and more. Now, I wonder if it would be possible for a Ruby application to update itself on-the-fly (if the write permission allows it). Can a Ruby application fetch an update and refresh itself? I have seen this functionality a lot in Apple applications and I know updates and fixes are something you must anticipate for when deploying an application.     In Ruby, I want to have two threads running at the same time, and want the background thread to periodically signal the foreground thread. How do I get the foreground thread to block until the background thread says 'go'? I can think of a few ways to do it, but am after the most appropriate, idiomatic Ruby method.   • Is it possible to call Javascript's onsubmit event programatically on a form?

    In Ruby on Rails, I'm attempting to update the innerHTML of a div tag using the form_remote_tag helper. This update happens whenever an associated select tag receives an onchange event. The problem is, <select onchange="this.form.submit();">; doesn't work. Nor does document.forms[0].submit(). The only way to get the onsubmit code generated in the form_remote_tag to execute is to create a hidden submit button, and invoke the click method on the button from the select tag. Here's a working ERb partial example. <% form_remote_tag :url => product_path, :update => 'content', :method => 'get' do -%> <% content_tag :div, :id => 'content' do -%> <%= select_tag :update, options_for_select([["foo", 1], ["bar", 2]]), :onchange => "this.form.commit.click" %> <%= submit_tag 'submit_button', :style => "display: none" %> <% end %> <% end %> What I want to do is something like this, but it doesn't work. <% form_remote_tag :url => product_path, :update => 'content', :method => 'get' do -%> <% content_tag :div, :id => 'content' do -%> # the following line does not work <%= select_tag :update, options_for_select([["foo", 1], ["bar", 2]]), :onchange => "this.form.onsubmit()" %> <% end %> <% end %> So, is there any way to remove the invisible submit button for this use case? There seems to be some confusion. So, let me explain. The basic problem is that submit() doesn't call the onsubmit() code rendered into the form. So, I need some way to call the form's onsubmit event code. Update: Orion Edwards solution would work if there wasn't a return(false); generated by Rails. I'm not sure which is worse though, sending a phantom click to an invisible submit button or calling eval on the getAttribute('onsubmit') call after removing the return call with a javascript string replacement!

  • Output to console while preserving user input in ruby

    I have a ruby script that is simultaneously and asynchronously receiving and displaying messages from a server, and allowing user input on the console. When a message is received, it is currently being written in the middle of what the user is typing. The input itself isn't garbled, but it looks horrible. Ideally, it would save the users current input, output the message, and then restore the input on the next line. I've done this in c by intercepting every key stroke, but all I remember is that it was a major hassle. I'm fairly new to ruby, so I'm not sure if there is a good way to do this, or how to do it. Example: User is typing >abcde, and message hello comes in, and user types fgh after. The console would now show: >abcdehellofgh and user can continue typing at the end. I would like it to show: hello >abcdefgh

  • Getting Wikipedia infoboxes in a format that Ruby can understand

    I am trying to get the data from Wikipedia's infoboxes into a hash or something so that I can use it in my Ruby on Rails program. Specifically I'm interested in the Infobox company and Infobox person. The example I have been using is "Ford Motor Company". I want to get the company info for that and the person info for the people linked to in Ford's company box. I've tried figuring out how to do this from the Wikipedia API or DBPedia but I haven't had much luck. I know wikipedia can return some things as json which I could parse with ruby but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the infobox. In the case of DBPedia I am kind of lost on how to even query it to get the info for Ford Motor Company.

  • Ad/Banner Management/Rotation for Ruby on Rails?

    Hi, I have a niche site that I'd like to sell banners for directly, rather than going through adsense. I need a system to manage the whole process: displaying ads and an administrative interface to manage them. It doesn't have to be anything terribly fancy, although open source is greatly preferred so that I can grow the system as needs be. Since the site itself is in Rails, I would prefer something for that environment. Googling turns up bunches of them in PHP, but the results are a bit polluted and I didn't have any luck finding one that was done in/for Rails. If I don't find one, I suppose I'll see what I can do to hack together something and release it myself under an open license. Another possibility is this: http://www.google.com/admanager - anyone have anything to say about it? Is it right for someone just selling a few ads for a not-so-big site? Thanks, Dave

  • Is ruby ||= intelligent?

    I have a question regarding the ||= statement in ruby and this is of particular interest to me as I'm using it to write to memcache. What I'm wondering is, does ||= check the receiver first to see if it's set before calling that setter, or is it literally an alias to x = x || y This wouldn't really matter in the case of a normal variable but using something like: CACHE[:some_key] ||= "Some String" could possibly do a memcache write which is more expensive than a simple variable set. I couldn't find anything about ||= in the ruby api oddly enough so I haven't been able to answer this myself. Of course I know that: CACHE[:some_key] = "Some String" if CACHE[:some_key].nil? would achieve this, I'm just looking for the most terse syntax.

  • caching static files for ruby on rails application using nginx

    I have been trying for some time to serve & cache static files for my rails app using nginx. the rails app server runs mongrel_cluster and is deployed on a different host than that of nginx. following many of the available discussions I tried the following server { listen 80; server_name www.myappserver.com; ssl on; root /var/apps/myapp/current/public; location ~ ^/(images|javascripts|stylesheets)/ { root /var/apps/myapp/current; expires 10y; } location / { proxy_pass http://myapp_upstream; } } But nginx fails to find the images and to load the css and js files. Can anyone help me out here? My aim is to configure nginx in such a way that it caches the static files till expiry. Please suggest me some way to achieve this or am I missing any point here?

The plugin enables the moving of DOM objects in realistic ways using velocity, gravity, wind etc. However I want to use the plugin to calculate where objects are to be placed inside a canvas element, not DOM object. How do I change the plugin script to work for ANY object with 'top' and 'left' properties rather than only working with DOM objects found with a jQuery selector?   • AJAX with Ruby on Rails?

    This is probably a really dumb question with a simple answer but... I am working on a project where I need to use AJAX to send/receive information. I am using Ruby on Rails (which I am pretty new to), but rather than using the helper methods or the built in functionality in the 'defaults' Javascript file, I need to do this manually in my own Javascript. I believe that ultimately I will want to send a request with a JSON object, then have the controller return another JSON object containing the requested information. The problem is that I cannot seem to find the syntax for sending something to a specific controller method, with parameters, directly from Javascript - everything I Google ends up being tutorials for using the Rails AJAX helper methods.

    If I have an array like this: [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5], is there a built in method to create this: [[0, 1, 2], [3, 4, 5]] given a width of 3? If there is no built in method, how could I improve on this? def multi_to_single(array, width) return [].tap{|md_array| (array.length.to_f / width).ceil.times {|y| row = (array[(y*width), width]) md_array.push( row + Array.new(width - row.length)) } } end I feel like I have missed something obvious because I haven't programmed ruby in a while!   • Is autoload thread-safe in Ruby 1.9?

    It seems to me that the Ruby community has been freaking out a little about autoload since this famous thread, discouraging its use for thread safety reasons. Does anyone know if this is no longer an issue in Ruby 1.9.1 or 1.9.2? I've seen a bit of talk about wrapping requires in mutexes and such, but the 1.9 changelogs (or at least as much as I've been able to find) don't seem to address this particular question. I'd like to know if I can reasonably start autoloading in 1.9-only libraries without any reasonable grief. Thanks in advance for any insights.

    I am using ruby 1.8.7. p = lambda { return 10;} def lab(block) puts 'before' puts block.call puts 'after' end lab p Above code output is before 10 after I refactored same code into this def lab(&block) puts 'before' puts block.call puts 'after' end lab { return 10; } Now I am getting LocalJumpError: unexpected return. To me both the code are doing same thing. Yes in the first case I am passing a proc and in the second case I am passing a block. But &block converts that block into proc.   • Ruby: wait for system command to end

    Hey all, I'm converting an xls 2 csv with a system(command) in ruby. After the conversion i'm processing this csv files. But the conversion is still going when the program wants to process the files. So at that time they are non existant. Can someone tell me if it's possible to let Ruby wait the right amount of time for the system command to finish? Right now i'm using sleep 20 but if it will take longer once, it isn't right of course... Thanks!

  • Canonicalizing XML in Ruby

    I'm working on a SAML gateway using Ruby/Rails and I'm attempting to write some code that validates the xml digital signature of the incoming SAML response against the x509 cert of the originating service. My problem: the signature depends on a canonicalized version of the XML that is hashed and then signed and I'm having trouble finding a ruby lib/gem that will canonicalize XML per the spec. I found a super old gem on rubyforge that is a mess but I'd be more interested if something like nokogiri supported this kind of functionality (from the nokogiri docs, it doesn't). I've googled extensively but thought I'd ask around here to see if anyone has any good insights before I go and try to write my own version or rework the existing c14n-r library.

    I'm new to rails, so be nice. I'm building a "rolodex" type application, and this question is about the best way to handle creating an entity along with several relationship entities at the same time. For (a contrived) example: My application will have a Person model, which has_one Contact_Info model. On the create.html.erb page for Person it makes sense for the user of my appliction to create the person, and the contact_info at the same time. It doesn't seem right to include details for creating a contact directly in the create view/controller for person. What's the rails way to handle this?

  • Track unicode words from Twitter using Ruby and the Tweetstream API

    I am trying to track a set of keywords from Twitter by using the Streaming API (can't post the link here because of spam limitations: google twitter streaming API). I am doing this inside Ruby, using the TweetStream gem: http://bit.ly/cODAWI The problem I have is that I want to track keywords that contain some unicode/UTF-8 characters. For instance: require 'rubygems' require 'tweetstream' TweetStream::Client.new("my_user_name", "my_password").track("é") do |s| puts s.text end (you can try it out, provided you installed the tweetstream and json gems) This piece of code does not print anything, while replacing "é" with "e" outputs a bunch of tweets continuously. I did not find any reliable documentation about Unicode in Ruby, so I have no idea where the problem comes from. Thanks for your help!

    I'm writing a simple jQuery plugin, but I'm having trouble being able to use multiple instances on a page. For instance, here is a sample plugin to illustrate my point: (function($) { $.fn.samplePlugin = function(options) { if (typeof foo != 'undefined') { alert('Already defined!'); } else { var foo = 'bar'; } }; })(jQuery); And then if I do this: $(document).ready(function(){ $('#myDiv').samplePlugin({}); // does nothing $('#myDiv2').samplePlugion({}); // alerts "Already defined!" }); This is obviously an over-simplified example to get across the point. So my question is, how do I have two separate instances of the plugin? I'd like to be able to use it across multiple instances on the same page. I'm guessing that part of the problem might be with defining the variables in a global scope. How can I define them unique to that instance of the plugin then? Thank you for your guidance!

  • Ruby on Rails, PHP or C++ for web social network

    Hello, I have chosen diploma work in university. It's a mini social network. But now I am really stuck with which technology I should stick. I am average at C++ ISAPI web services development, below average PHP(had few projects with it) and new to Ruby and its framework RAILS. I have a deadline 1.5 month to develop it(about 5 hours every day after my full time job). Also I heard that its very easy to learn and develop with Ruby on Rails. Considering C++ I know that I have to do lots of coding and work by myself and PHP looks almost the same to me. So I am looking for you skilled developers advise what would you do in my position? Learn RoR, stick with C++ or PHP or maybe use something else?
