• Locking a file to verify a single execution of a service. How reliable?

  Hello, I am deploying a little service to an UNIX(AIX) system. I want to check if there is no active instance of that service running when starting it. How reliable is to implement that check like this? Try to acquire a lock on a file (w/ FileChannel) If succeeds, keep lock and continue execution If fails, exit and refuse to run the main body I am aware of software like the Tanuki wrapper, however, I'm longing for a simpler(maybe not portable) solution. Regarding PIDFILE(s): I want to avoid using them if possible, as I don't have administrative rights on the machine, neither knowledge in AIX's shell programming.

• How to open a pdf on the iPad from an AIR for iOS app

  I am making an AIR for iOS app that can download pdfs. I do not want to display the pdf in the app itself but want the default pdf-viewer (iBooks) to launch and show the pdf. How can this be done. I am aware that navigateToURL can be used to open a file with the uri scheme of iBooks. But i dont know how to tell iBooks to look in the app-directory of my app. (Or is there some secret directory to place the file in from within the app - where iBooks can find it) Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated as this is somewhat of a show stopper.

• Create pdf file dynamically in vb.net for .net 1.1 framework

  I need to create a pdf file dynamically in vb.net. It needs to contain several images and lines of text. I am using VS 2003, so whatever solution I use will need to be compatible with the .net 1.1 framework. The current method I am using is wpcubed, but this requires that all images be converted to bmp format before adding them to the pdf, which can be extremely slow when dealing with a large number of images. I am aware that there are an awful lot of other 3rd party products that claim to do this, and I have had a search through them. But without registering, downloading, installing and writing code to use each of them in turn, it is very difficult to differentiate between them. So far I have looked into evo pdf and pdfsharp but neither seem to work with .net 1.1. (Although they don't make this abundantly clear.) Has anyone else found a method that works and they would recommend (a free one-if possible)?

• Is there a strategy to back-port C# code?

  Hi all, I intend using the Argotic framework in support of a .Net Atom server. Unfortunately my target server (over which I have no control) only has .Net 1.1 - any the Argotic library is only in .Net 2 and 3.5. So, I now need to back-port the code to 1.1. Can anybody provide any strategic tips for this undertaking? I'm aware of the merits of using Unit Tests to verify the ported code (here). should I be looking for automated tools? should I just import the code into VS2003 .Net 1.1 project and work through the compiler warnings? • Constraints when using WCF for an online multiplayer game

  I want to build a service oriented game server and client using WCF where users can play card games on different tables after they logged in with an account. I would like to choose WCF due to it's flexibility in exchanging the communication channels. Maybe, a web interface will be added later which can then just use an other channel class. An additional plus is the ability for contexts which could be used to track a user over a whole gaming session. Are there some constraints I should be aware of when using WCF for the communication between the client and the server?

• JSObject-like stuff in ActionScript 3?

  I would like to ask if there is a liveconnect equivalent for ActionScript 3. I understand that there is the ExternalInterface class inside AS3 but it only supports calling a method by name. The really cool thing about Java and LiveConnect is that you can do something like function jsFunc(name) = { this.name = name; this.talk = function(){ alert('hello world my name is ' + this.name); } } javaapplet.function(new jsFunc("bob")); The above approaches pseudo code since I never tested it but I've seen it in action. In AS3, while I am able to pass in an instance of JavaScript "object" into AS, it is often converted into an ActionScript Object instance which does away with all the functions as far as I'm aware. I saw an implementation of JSInterface but I don't think it does specifically that. Is there any way to make OO like javascript work with ActionScript 3?

• Programming Definitions: What exactly is 'Building'.

  What does it mean to BUILD a solution/project/program? I want to make sure I have my definitions correct (so I don't sound like a idiot when conversing). In IDE's, you can (correct me if I'm wrong) compile source-code/programming-code into computer-readable machine code. You can debug a program, which is basically stepping through the program and looking for errors. But what exactly doe's building a program do? In VS im aware that when you build a program it produces a executable file in a debug folder. Any hard-core tech definitions of what it means to BUILD a program?

• Poster image on embedded youtube video

  Hi, I want to embed a youtube video on my website and I need to replace the default poster image that shows up on the video with a jpg of my own. The default image that shows up is a scaled-up thumbnail and is therefore very blurry and pixelated and I need to use a hi-res jpg in place of it. I'm aware that youtube only allows us to pick one of three auto-generated thumbnails, but does that restriction also apply to youtube videos embedded on an external website? If so, is there an alternate way to do this? Thanks!

• Powershell's import-clixml from string

  Is there any way to run import-clixml cmdlet on a string or xml object? It requires a file path as input to produce ps objects and can't get input from an xml object. Since there is convertto-xml cmdlet which serializes ps object into xml object, why isn't there a convertfrom-xml, which would do the opposite? I am aware of System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer class which would do just that, however I would like to stick with cmdlets to do this. Is there any way to do this with cmdlets (probably just with import-clixml), without creating temporary files?

  Where can I get code example of using google docs with asp.net mvc? I need to upload documents and make it possible for people to download them. Also would be just great to make it possible to see the documents like I see them on google docs and be able to edit (probably use iFrame) but would like to get working example or some tips to get started. Code pieces are greatly appreciated, upvoted and marked as answer ;-), but I~ll be enought with a good starting points. P.S. I~m aware of google have docs for their api :-).   I just discovered Erubis, a replacement for the default view renderer for Ruby on Rails. However, from what I can tell from reading about it, it's superior across the board. It is much faster. It has many more options. It can prevent cross site scripting without having to use h. Does this have any disadvantages versus the standard erb renderer? Why isn't this the standard renderer packaged with Rails? Also, the docs for Erubis say to install it just by installing the gem, and then add the following to environment.rb: require 'erubis/helpers/rails_helper' #Erubis::Helpers::RailsHelper.engine_class = Erubis::Eruby # or Erubis::FastEruby Reading the docs, FastEruby seems to be just a faster renderer than Eruby. Why wouldn't it be default and used by everyone? I'm highly interested in using the engine erubis::EscapedEruby which automatically calls h to escape html on fields from the database. Are there any gotchas I should be aware of or does this pretty much solve all cross site scripting?

  Although in Oracle DB its is allowed to parametrize the number of rows that the query can fetch by adding to the query: select ... from ... where ... and rownum <= @MaximumRecords I can't add similar condition to acuivalent query running in DB2: It is allowed to add: select ... from ... where ... fetch first 500 rows only (where there is fixed number of rows) but not: select ... from ... where ... fetch first :1 rows only (:1 == @MaximumRecords) Is someone aware of a solution/work-around to this problem?

So what I want to clarify: setSomething(somethingInterface something); // this IS NOT interface injection, IT IS setter injection? Interface injection is when you just write `implements someExportedModuleInterface' and it configures it automatically? Could you please give an example of how this interface injection is done with Spring 'aware' interfaces? I am writing dissertation and I want to be sure what I am saying is not lie and correct.

  I'm looking for some tools for testing vim scripts. Either vim scripts that do unit/functional testing, or classes for some other library (eg Python's unittest module) that make it convenient to run vim with parameters that cause it to do some tests on its environment, and determine from the output whether or not a given test passed. I'm aware of a couple of vim scripts that do unit testing, but they're sort of vaguely documented and may or may not actually be useful: vim-unit: purports "To provide vim scripts with a simple unit testing framework and tools" first and only version (v0.1) was released in 2004 documentation doesn't mention whether or not it works reliably, other than to state that it is "fare [sic] from finished". unit-test.vim: This one also seems pretty experimental, and may not be particularly reliable. May have been abandoned or back-shelved: last commit was in 2009-11 ( 6 months ago) No tagged revisions have been created (ie no releases) So information from people who are using one of those two existent modules, and/or links to other, more clearly usable, options, are very welcome.

• I've created a database table using Visual Studio for my C# program. Now what?

  Hi! I'm very new to C#, so please forgive me if I've overlooked something here. I've created a database using Visual Studio (add new item service-based database) called LoadForecast.mdf. I then created a table called ForecastsDB and added some fields. My main question is this: I've created a console application with the intention of writing some data to the newly created database. I've added LoadForecast.mdf as a data source for my program, but is there anything else I should do? I saw an example where the next step was adding a "data diagram", but this was for a visual application, not a console application. Do I still need to diagram the database for my console app? I just want to be able to write new records out to my database table and wasn't sure if there were any other things I needed to do for the VS environment to be "aware" of my database.   I'm trying to solve this problem where I have a unique array of values within a specific range. Take this scenario: Generate a fixed value array (90) with unique entries. If you find a duplicate, remove, reindex, and fill the void. I'm running into the problem that conditional statements do not allow you to interact with an array outside of it's scope. I'm aware of array_unique but it doesn't refill those gaps, just makes them. How do I refill those gaps?

  I am in search of who specifically to contact at Sybase regarding Advantage Database Server's DBI driver, specifically DBD::Advantage. The only reference I can find is to one 'lancesc' in the README, but there are no references to a contact email, CPAN author etc. Inadvertantly I happened upon one StackOverflow user lancesc here. Would anyone happen to know who to contact regarding this? I do wish this was on CPAN. I've found a small bug regarding column quoting in the sql parser that they'd likely prefer to be made aware of. There are also several questions I have for them regarding failing functionality.

• How to seralize only some properties in .Net?

  This is for a web project so i have several classes that inherit from Web.UI. I only want to serialize very particular properties (basically, only local properties) I'm aware of the XMLIgnore property that can be placed on a property to ignore items, but this won't work in my context since that would require modifying a bunch of stuff that i really don't want to modify (and probably can't). So how do i tell the xml serializer to ignore everything except for X and Y or tell it to seralize just X and Y? i could just create my own xml in a string builder or something and if that's the only way, so be it. however i'm looking for a method that will employ the built in XML stuff. Thanks

Anywho, a couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. For example, where should we host the files, what type of security issues do I need to be aware of, what's the best software to use for developing websites (I use visual studio at work), where can I find some design techniques, etc. Any help is appreciated.

  This code for parsing my xml and appending via jquery seems to work great in every browser but Chrome (Mac only, the windows version of chrome works fine) and explorer. I'm not aware of any glaring issues in the code so I thought some fresh eyes might help.
