  • SQLRally Nordic 2012 – session material

I was able to attend many interesting sessions, I had a great time catching up with old friends and meeting new people, and I was allowed to present a session myself.   • Icons of external devices not appearing on Desktop in 12.04

    In 10.04 and all, when a pen drive or as for that matter, when any external devices are connected, their icons are shown on the desktop and nautilus pops up automatically too. But in my 12.04 Gnome classic, when I connect an external device, nothing happens. I have to open nautilus manually and then click on the icon in the left panel to access the folder of the device. Is there any way to rectify this and restore the old trait as in 10.04?

  • Nvidia driver overscan issue second monitor via dvi-d cable

    Ok, I know that I have a bit of a bizarre setup, but here goes. I have an old laptop, HP Pavilion 6000. The graphics card in there is a GeForce 7150M. The monitor connection is an old 18pin. The external monitor I use is a Samsung SyncMaster 2333. Don't ask me why, but this monitor only has a dvi-d connection (yes, i have searched it). So I have the monitor plugged into the laptop. If I use any of the Nvidia propriety drivers and try to set the resolution up to 1920x1080 (the monitor's native resolution), I get a massive overscan issue. Over the years I have tried to get this to work, tinkering with my xorg.conf to death. I have also tried this on every Ubuntu since 10.04, on all the corresponding LUbuntus, and on all the Linux Mints since Lisa. Exact same issue. I have even tried it in WinDoze and it works perfectly there (although I did get the error once, but was unable to reproduce it). Using the Open Source drivers it works perfectly iff I switch off the laptop monitor (this makes no difference with the Nvidia drivers). I would have happily gone on using the Open Source drivers, except that since upgrading to LUbuntu 12.10, the Open Source drivers make my monitor completely hazy and have the same overscan issue until I (through the haze, only because I know where things are) go to the monitor settings, activate the laptop's monitor, then deactivate it, and suddenly it comes right. I have to do this every time. So I have to find a way to fix one of them, so I may as well tackle the propriety drivers, hence this overlong question. Amidst other things, I have tried the nvidia-settings, but because it is connected to an 18pin, it detects the monitor as a vga monitor and does not give me overscan correction options. I have tried custom modlines (although there are always more of those try), I have tried using xrandr, and I have tried all the FlatPanelOptions. What I have not tried is a Gentoo build, as I don't have time any more to do that installation, but up to about three years ago when I ran Gentoo exclusively I did not have this issue. Below is an link to an image with a red highlight around the portion of the screen visible to me, the numbers around it are the number of pixels which are cut off.     I have two hard drives (One 500 GB and the other 750 GB). I would like to create a single partition which will include these 2 hard drives. I guess it works only with identical hard drives, correct me if I am wrong. I have these 2 drives at an old computer which I tuned and may turn it into a web server,so I'm going to install ubuntu on them. How can I make 2 or more hard drives behave as one in one partition?

  • Awesome WordPress modular theme builder?

    I came across a really neat modular theme for WordPress a while ago, but I can't remember the name so I'm wondering if somebody can help out. It was a paid theme with a dedicated company behind it if I'm not mistaken. The theme allowed you to change the colors of all the content areas, define widgets, and resize content areas. I'm really interested in being able to resize columns and such at the touch of a button, getting too old for the usual CSS micromanagement that goes on with brittle themes.

What is the best way to make the old dirty ones disappear from search results and keep the clean ones? Is blocking profile.php with robots.txt enough?

  • Why do so many APIs boast about being RESTful?

    I have noticed that many APIs I have encountered such as Facebook's old API and Skydrive's API boast about being RESTful. Hence, I looked up what REST means on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representational_state_transfer), but I don't understand why do APIs boast about being RESTful. Doesn't RESTful just mean that an API works via communications across the web such as via HTTP? What's the big deal? This sounds like any API that relies on third-parties.

Except at the moment I do not have internet connection (i'm using a unsecured connection) and i'm using my Windows 7 Laptop to get a connection to the web.     I am having problem with the most basic physic response when the player collide with static wall, floor or roof. I have a simple 3D maze, true means solid while false means air: bool bMap[100][100][100]; The player is a sphere. I have keys for moving x++, x--, y++, y-- and diagonal at speed 0.1f (0.1 * ftime). The player can also jump. And there is gravity pulling the player down. Relative movement is saved in: relx, rely and relz. One solid cube on the map is exactly 1.0f width, height and depth. The problem I have is to adjust the player position when colliding with solids, I don't want it to bounce or anything like that, just stop. But if moving diagonal left/up and hitting solid up, the player should continue moving left, sliding along the wall. Before moving the player I save the old player position: oxpos = xpos; oypos = ypos; ozpos = zpos; vec3 direction; direction = vec3(relx, rely, relz); xpos += direction.x*ftime; ypos += direction.y*ftime; zpos += direction.z*ftime; gx = floor(xpos+0.25); gy = floor(ypos+0.25); gz = floor(zpos+0.25); if (bMap[gx][gy][gz] == true) { vec3 normal = vec3(0.0, 0.0, 1.0); // <- Problem. vec3 invNormal = vec3(-normal.x, -normal.y, -normal.z) * length(direction * normal); vec3 wallDir = direction - invNormal; xpos = oxpos + wallDir.x; ypos = oypos + wallDir.y; zpos = ozpos + wallDir.z; } The problem with my version is that I do not know how to chose the correct normal for the cube side. I only have the bool array to look at, nothing else. One theory I have is to use old values of gx, gy and gz, but I do not know have to use them to calculate the correct cube side normal.

    Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? In my previous question I described my problem with starting / returning from suspend using Ubuntu on the Asus UX32VD (Zenbook). This problem could be solved by using Ubuntu 12.10 (alpha), however since the upgrade to beta 1 the old problem of starting / returning from suspend has returned. I found that starting in recovery does work, but this of course does not solve the problem. Any thoughts?
