• xen + debian network after upgrade squeeze to wheeze

  I've got a Debian + Xen server. After a system upgrade to the stable version the network doesn't come up after boot. Every time after reboot I need to bring it up manually. The network configuration was not changed during upgrade. Here is /etc/network/interfaces: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 11.22.33.44 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 11.22.33.1 nameserver 8.8.8.8 After boot ip r shows no route and eth0 has no ip address. • Server 2008R2 Server Manager Roles and Features won't refresh or allow addition of new roles or features

  I have a standalone DC in an isolated lab. I have installed the SUR tool and found no errors. I ran SFC and found no errors. I have attempted to install Windows Backup feature using Powershell, but received the same error about the computer needing to be restarted. Powershell cmdlets will list all of the installed roles and features. The rest of Server Manager works without problems. What can I do to get Server Manager Roles and Features working properly again? • Can't run utilities/.exe's that use the network from a [DFS] windows share on Windows 2008 servers. Can this be overcome?

  Under Windows Server 2008 I'm unable to run many utilities that use network resources. This works just fine under Windows Server 2003. For example: \\domain\dfs\tools$\bin\sendmail.exe ... \\domain\dfs\tools$\bin\psexec.exe ... echo %_metric% %_value% %_unixtime% | \\domain\dfs\bin\foo$\nc graphite.domain 2003 -w1 Reproducing and maintaining this folder on a large number of servers/vm's is not desirable. Is there a way to allow Windows Server 2008 to run these tools? If so, can this be enabled via GPO or in a fashion that can be scripted during automated builds? Edit: The commands/tools do work just fine, when run from local drives. Together with acl group control for Samba, it allows me to delegate management of permissions to different users based on group membership. Thing is, when I create a new file on a Samba share, I'm unable to set its primary group (the one that grants permission to change its permissions). It's being set to my primary group (Domain Users) or group set using force group option in smb.conf share definition. Removing all groups in windows except the one I want to become the new primary group doesn't work. I can change it using chgrp group folder/ as regular user though shell, but it's suboptimal (not all users are *nix users). Because this is temporary test box, it has no real domain-name. But I used 2-level name to avoid long time waiting of sshd on booting.   I'm having problem connecting to MS SQL Server (2012 Express) after accessing a database through IIS (web site). I can access the data through web site no problem, but I can't access the data from any other programs (i.e SSMS) until I reboot the SQL server. It seems that the connection stays open even if I close a browser. Here is error message I'm getting Unable to open the physical file "C:---------". • How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

  I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though. • Cannot terminate process, "already terminated"

  On Windows 8, I regularly get processes into a state where I can't terminate them. Skypekit.exe seems to be the process that's most likely to trigger that issue, but other processes can do that, too. When I try to terminate these processes, I sometimes get an "access denied" message, sometimes nothing happens - but every following attempt to kill that process results in an "access denied" message, too, even though I... have administrative rights (and ran the task manager with it) own that process have the right to terminate it "Process Hacker 2" shows a more detailed error message, stating that I couldn't terminate the process because it already is terminated. Still, the process is most definitely still there, because every task manager I tested still can see it. Process Hacker's "Terminator" is unable to kill such a process, but when running the "Close the process' handles" tactic, Process Hacker gets stuck himself, leaving its windows in "not responding". In that state, other task managers are in turn unable to kill Process Hacker. The only way I found to actually end these processes is to shutdown (which works without any problems). Why is this happening? How can I kill these processes?

• How to script GPO in Windows computers without Active Directory?

  Does anyone know how to script GPO for users in a Windows computer that is not on any Active Directory network? I can't use GPMC because it doesn't work without a domain. I have been searching the net for the last couple of hours and all the solutions that I find are related to GPMC. I'd imagine there are some objects in the GPO that are accessible via WMI? Does anyone know anything about that? I was unable to find any information about that. Here is the situation I am trying to script: I have 10 users on the machine, and I want to restrict what they are able to do on the machine. So I created 10 GPOs for each one of them. Now I want to apply a common policy to all of them. The only way to do it is to go through each of the GPO and do it manually. This is too time consuming, therefore I am seeking for a simpler solution. I was unable to find a way to copy GPO from a user to a user. That would make it much easier, I would create a GPO for 1st user, then copy it over to all the other users, but no luck, couldn't find a way to copy GPOs. The other method I tried was creating a GPO for the whole user group but it turns out you can't apply GPO to a group unless you use GPMC, which I can't cause the computer is not on any domain. So I am thinking about scripting this whole process, but again I can't find any examples of how to access particular GPO objects for particular users and modify properties through WMI. Any suggestions on the issue I am having? Thanks!

• How to start MSSQL Server with corrupt model db

  After moving some databases around (restoring, deleting, etc) we experienced an issue creating new databases. Specifically, When trying to create a new database MSSQL Server it failed because the "The database 'model' is marked RESTORING and is in a state that does not allow recovery to be run". As some online solutions suggested, we tried to Start and Stop the MSSQL Service. Service would not restart because "Could not create tempdb. You may not have enough disk space available. Free additional disk space by deleting other files on the tempdb drive" (FYI: the drive has 100gb of free space). Tried restarting the machine the MSSQL Server is running on. When the server came back online, we received the same error. We have tried deleting tempdb.mdf and restoring the modeldb from the templates folder, but neither of these solved the issue. We are unable to connect to the database, even in single user mode. Many of the online solutions have us running SQL commands against the server, but we are unable to connect (even in single user mode) to the DB to run commands against the server. Specific error messages: Database 'model' cannot be opened. It is in the middle of a restore. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 927) The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting. The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started. A service specific error occurred: 1814. We need the server up and running again ASAP.

• How to resolve 'No internet connectivity issues' with a Virtualised 2008 R2 Server using Forefront UAG

  I have spent some considerable time reading up on as many possible blogs and articles as I can to help me solve why my VM (Running on Hyper-V) for DirectAccess has suddenly stopped being able to access the internet. The VM setup shares the same internet connection on which I have written and submitted this question so I know that the actual underlying internet connection is fully functional. Previous to last week the DirectAccess was fully functional and had no issues. This is a recent problem which was led up to by a number of consistent crashes on the DA machine when access was attempted. Upon reboot all seemed well until recently. I am not certain whether it is relevant, but previously to this I had a number of power issues where the entire VM host shutdown unexpectedly leaving around 8 VM's in a bad way. Upon restart, the UAG DirectAccess machine was unable to access its configuration service (although the service was started) but this seemed to relate to the Light-Weight Active Directory Service AD LDS which had a corrupted database. Having repaired this database, I restarted the service and could subsequently reconnect to the configuration service again. For good measure I re-bound the network adapters (virtualised through Hyper-V) and DirectAccess claimed to be all happy again. However as it stands my machine is still unable to access the internet showing the "No internet connectivity" exclamation mark for the external facing NIC. I have also tried removing the adapters, disabling, re-enabling and the problem persists. The intranet part of the VM CorpNet seems to be fully functional as before and I'm running out of ideas. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am not an advanced Domain Administrator so please be gentle.

• Change the background color of selected text in Google Docs to increase readability [migrated]

  How can I override or change the background color of text selected in Google Docs? It is difficult for me to see the difference and I would like to increase the contrast or difference. After Google restyled Google Docs last year (or earlier this year), I've been unable to see selected text. It's possible this is a visual deficiency with my eyes. In Google Docs, under both Google Chrome (17.0.963.83 (Official Build 127885) m) and Firefox (11.0), when I select text inside a Google Doc, the selected text has a background of color #d6e0f5. Compare this to the default browser background color of #2f65c0. (I determined the color of the selected text background by taking a screenshot and using the color picker tool in Photoshop). I've tested this using a brand new Firefox profile as well as google chrome profile. Here's a section of a screenshot showing the selected text : I've tried using a userscript to override the CSS to go back to the default text selection color using the "Stylish" plugin with this css : ::selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } ::-moz-selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } ::-webkit-selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } This code works on other sites, but I'm unable to get it to work on Google Docs. (I tested on other sites but applying the userscript to a different domain and using bright yellow instead of the default dark blue #2f65c0.) When you use Google Docs, do you have the same color background for selected text or something different? (To test this, browse to docs.google.com , create a document, type text into the document, select the text with the mouse by dragging over it, take a screenshot, load the screenshot up in an image editor and determine the background color of the selected text.) This color differential (between light blue #d6e0f5 and white #fffff) may be easy to see for others and the problem lies with my eyes.

  I've just reinstalled Debian on my Sony VAIO laptop, and my dmesg and virtual consoles all get spammed with the same messages over and over again. The only way I can seem to have it shut up (without killing my actually useful USB ports) is to disable one of the USB host controllers: # echo "0000:00:1a.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind This also takes down my Bluetooth interface, but I'm fine with that. I would like this setting to persist, so that I can painlessly use my virtual console again in case I need it. I want my operating system (Debian amd64) to never wake it up, but I don't know how to do this.   Someone in my studio designed a webpage some years ago, and now the client decided to change the server (he moved to a Linux Apache server running Gen2 SMP, 64 bits, PHP version 5.3.8, Standard MYSQL version 5). It suddenly started to do weird things. When clicking on a link that requires login, the page redirects you to the login page using header() function in PHP. Curiously, the page shows this: OK The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [no address given] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. • (squid): failed to find or read error text file.

  There is something in our ERR_NO_RELAY that is causing this error to be logged and for the squid process to fail on start up. I can't show you the exact content of the file but I can tell you It has several lines of JavaScript When we remove the JavaScript, the problem goes away. This same file does not cause any issues other 3 instances of squid that we have running internally. All instances of squid came from the same VM images so they should be the same. We are unable to reproduce this issue except on the one box and we are unable to debug more on this box right now because it is running in production. I know these files are interpreted so squid can replace certain values available in the session so it may be that a syntax error caused this issue. That does not explain why we cannot reproduce it on other (virtually the same) images. One difference is that the instance of squid that has the issue was under load when the issue occurred.   I need to securely encrypt data in my database so that if the database is dumped, hackers are unable to decrypt the data. I'm planning on creating a simple key server on a different machine, and allowing the DB server access to it (restricted by IP address on the key server to permit the DB server). The key server would contain the key required to encrypt/decrypt data. However, if a hacker were able to get a shell on the DB server, they could request the key from the key server and therefore decrypt the data in the database. How could I prevent this (assuming all firewalls are in place, DB is not connected directly to the internet, etc)? i.e. is there some method I could use that could secure a request from the DB server to the key server so that even if a hacker had a shell on the DB server they'd be unable to make those same requests? Signed requests from the DB server could make issuing these requests less trivial - I suppose that'd help increase the amount of time it'd take to compromise the key server, something a hacker probably wouldn't have much of. As far as I can see, if someone can get a shell on the DB server everything's lost anyway. This could be mitigated by using one key per data item in the DB so at least there's not a single "master" key, but multiple keys that the hacker would need to access. What would be a secure method of ensuring requests from the DB server to the key server were authentic and could be trusted?

• I just deleted my backup file! How do I save it?

  I just accidentally deleted a backup file that I need to restore my system. It's an Acronis True Image TIB file. It was stored at H:\My backups and the name of the file was File_backup_2012-10-18.tib. I did a quick scan with Recuva 1.43.623 and it found the file using the recovery wizard, but it was unable to recover it. The "state" of the file is "unrecoverable". So the resulting file is 0 byte. I am trying to do a deep scan with Recuva right now but it takes a lot of time. If it should fail, what other recovery option do I have? Is there any other good file recovery software that's free to use for home users? I do have a second copy of the whole system partition, but I needed this file backup copy because it is more up to date. That's the file, right there! But why is Recuva unable to recover it?

• Problem upgrading kernel on debian 3.1

  Hi, I have a quite old box in a remote server farm. So I have no direct access. Only remote SSH (and via SSH to a serial console). I haven't updated this box in ages. Now, whenever I want to install a new package, a dependency to glibc appears. Unfortunately, the install of glibc depends on a 2.6 kernel and I am running a venerable 2.4 kernel (one more reason to upgrade). The problem is, that the install of a new kernel has an indirect (over locales) dependency to glibc. So, to install glibc, I need a new kernel. For a new kernel, I need to upgrade glibc. Essentially I am blocked. What's the best way to proceed considering I have no "hardware" access?   I'm having some DNS issues on a new box I'm installing with CentOS 6.2. I am able to look up names using nslookup, dig, or host. I am able to ping machines by name or by IP address. However, when I try other tools, such as ssh, wget, or yum, they are unable to resolve names. Obviously, my DSL modem is responding to DNS requests in some way that some parts of Linux's resolution system don't like. Looking at the tcpdump, I am unable to see what the difference is. Certainly, both servers are sending the same addresses. Here's the output from tcpdump -nn -X with the server set to the DNS server on the DSL modem.
