    I would like to understand the rules when can Scala automatically convert methods into functions. For example, if I have following two methods: def d1(a: Int, b: Int) {} def r[A, B](delegate: (A, B) ? Unit) {} I can do this: r(d1) But, when overloading r it will no longer work: def r[A, B, C](delegate: (A, B, C) ? Unit) {} r(d1) // no longer compiles and I have to explicitly convert method into partially applied function: r(d1 _) Is there any way to accomplish following with the explicit conversion? def r[A, B](delegate: (A, B) ? Unit) {} def r[A, B, C](delegate: (A, B, C) ?   • Converting linear colors to SRGB shows banding in FFmpeg

    When I convert an EXR file sequence with x264 using FFmpeg and convert the colorspace from linear to SRGB (with gamma 0.45454545) I get some heavy banding issues (most visible on a dark gradient).   • Automating the choice between JPEG and PNG with a script

    Choosing the right format to save your images in is crucial for preserving image quality and reducing artifacts. Different formats follow different compression methods and come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. JPG, for instance is suited for real life photographs that are rich in color gradients. The lossless PNG, on the other hand, is far superior when it comes to schematic figures: Picking the right format can be a chore when working with a large number of files. That's why I would love to find a way to automate it. A little bit of background on my particular use case: I am working on a number of handouts for a series of lectures at my unversity. The handouts are rich in figures, which I have to extract from PDF-formatted slides. Extracting these images gives me lossless PNGs, which are needlessly large at times. Converting these particular files to JPEG can reduce their size to up to less than 20% of their original file size, while maintaining the same quality. This is important as working with hundreds of large images in word processors is pretty crash-prone. Batch converting all extracted PNGs to JPEGs is not an option I am willing to follow, as many if not most images are better suited to be formatted as PNGs. Converting these would result in insignificant size reductions and sometimes even increases in filesize - that's at least what my test runs showed. What we can take from this is that file size after compression can serve as an indicator on what format is suited best for a particular image. It's not a particularly accurate predictor, but works well enough. So why not use it in form of a script: I included inotifywait because I would prefer for the script be executed automatically as soon as I drag an extracted image into a folder. This is a simpler version of the script that I've been using for the last couple of weeks: #!/bin/bash inotifywait -m --format "%w%f" --exclude '.jpg' -r -e create -e moved_to --fromfile '/home/MHC/.scripts/Workflow/Conversion/include_inotifywait' | while read file; do mogrify -format jpg -quality 92 "$file" done The advanced version of the script would have to be able to handle spaces in file names and directory names preserve the original file names flatten PNG images if an alpha value is set compare the file size between the temporary converted image and its original determine if the difference is greater than a given precentage act accordingly The actual conversion could be done with imagemagick tools: convert -quality 92 -flatten -background white file.png file.jpg Unfortunately, my bash skills aren't even close to advanced enough to convert the scheme above into an actual script, but I am sure many of you can. I am using javasound and have an AudioInputStream of format PCM_SIGNED 8000.0 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, 4 bytes/frame, little-endian Using AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(target_format, original_stream) produces an 'IllegalArgumentException: Unsupported Conversion' when the target_format is PCM_SIGNED 8000.0 Hz, 16 bit, mono, 2 bytes/frame, little-endian Is it possible to convert this stream manually after every read() call? And if yes, how? In general, how can you compare two formats and tell if a conversion is possible?

    When you use iTunes to sync your videos with the iPhone the videos are always saved with no more than 640 pixels wide, if I am not wrong. What about the iPad? What is the size of videos iTunes syncs with iPad? 1024x768? and what if the video has a dimension below 1024x768? Will it scale up? or will it keep the video at low res and scale when you play? thanks.

  • Mixing different generations of ATi video cards

    I'm heading in the direction of a three monitor set up and hence suspect I need to go the dual video card route. At the moment, I've a Radeon X1900GT driving two 19" monitors which I'd like to keep and augment with something like a Radeon 5570 which would drive a 22" display. As such, I'm just wondering how Catalyst will cope with this configuration and whether there are any other issues that I'm likely to encounter. In terms of the obvious, my motherboard has two PCI-E slots and my power supply has two video card power connectors, so I'm hopefully covered from that side of things. Thanks in advance.

  • Video Card needs additional mounting support

    We are creating a fairly decent system with crossfire. The issue we are having is apparently the video cards are physically to heavy to be supported purely by the motherboard and case mounts. Whenever we have the case horizontal everything works fine however when we bring the case upright the computer stops working. Relevant Info: Video Cards (2) - Sapphire 5870 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102856) MotherBoard - Asus M4A79T Deluxe Case - CoolerMaster 922 HAF To me it looks as if an additional support bracket that could hold up the end of the card would be required (included with the viideo cards!!!) Does anyone have any experience with this.

  • Eclipse making background video skip with almost every click of the mouse

    The problem is i like to listen to videos online (mostly or all flash video) while programming and never had any problems until i started using eclipse, now every time i do just about anything other than type, it makes the video skip/freeze really bad and is really annoying. I have never had this happen using visual studio, netbeans, or adobe flash for that matter, unless i was compiling or doing something that hogs the processor. Are there any settings that might could fix this its getting really annoying. it happens almost every time i even click "find" on the find pop-up window and it is not like it is having to search a big file or anything it is only 700 lines, with honestly only about 1/2 that have content on them. Any ideas?

The reason for this is that the server which would run the TV Playout software is hosted/virtualized via an ESXi server, and does not have DirectX support.   • Dell XPS 420: Turning computer on, video ports showing static

    I have a Dell XPS 420 which i recently upgraded with a EVGA GTX 550TI and a 80GB SSD Drive. I converted this machine into a home theater PC. Which I've always had on. The computer wasn't responding, and so i restarted it and when it started, video ports showing static. I was getting static on my TV thru both DVI ports and the mini HDMI port. I assumed my video card had gone bad, but i completely replaced it and still the same behavior is occurring. I do not know how to diagnosis this issue. Any thoughts?

    What's the best way to rip a Blu-ray disc to an Xbox 360 compatible format, while preferably maintaining surround sound and as little video encoding as possible? As far as I can tell, the 360 technically supports both AVC and VC-1 (though if at those bit rates is questionable), so I'm kind of hoping that you could do it without actually re-encoding the video at all and, instead, just processing the audio and the re-muxing everything together in a new file.

    I am looking for a video card to run three monitors, it could be hdmi, dvi or vga. I want the three monitors to show an extended desktop but as three different desktops with maybe different resolutions, so when i maximize something it should be maximized only in one monitor. The information seems confusing, I think eyefinity tricks the OS to make it looks like one big display. I am sure I dont want this. So my question(s) is, is there a video card in the market that support 3 displays without eyefinity? Or can I use an eyefinity enabled card ( with one active display port) to run three monitors and disable eyefinity from the driver settings or something?

  • Computer has video artifacts after been exposed to rain

    My desktop now displays video artifacts after been exposed to rain. Only a very small amount of moisture went inside the case. The only place I noticed any water was on the CPU socket. I used a hair dryer and paper towels to wick any remaining moisture. When I boot the PC it loads it the OS, but there are large numbers of video artifacts. The artifacts appear symmetric if that helps. I am wondering what components I need to replace. I'd like to salvage what I can. My setup: AMD Athlon x3, Asus main board (AM2 socket), nVidia GT 430 PCIe, 8gb (4gb x2) DDR3

  • best storage option for recording live streaming video

    We're creating a new web site that includes video chat capabilities. Wowza Server is being used for the streaming media. We would like the capability for users to record their video chats in certain circumstances. Is it feasible to record the videos to the same server running Wowza? Or performance-wise, would it make more sense to store them on another server? I understand SANs are popular as well, but I'm a little concerned about cost for those as we are on a fairly tight budget. Currently we have two servers with pretty decent RAID cnofigurations for storage, one has 14TB and the other 6TB. Mostly concerned if doing the recording on the same server as the streaming server (or web server), could significantly adversely affect that server's primary function.
