  • Runs perfect but I can't reinstall my OS.

    hey, I have a computer that seems to have faulty hardware. I can run operating systems off of the computer and it runs perfectly, however, whenever i boot from CD to try and install a different operating system the thing tells me that the system never responds. Linux hangs after 30 seconds, windows just freaks out. I think it's a problem with how it's connecting to the hard drive. Is it possible it's just the IDE cable or do you think it's something else?

    I have been wanting to experiment with Windows clustering systems in my spare time, so I need a free, preferably open source, iSCSI Target that can support 2k3 and 2k8 fail-over and possibly High availability clustering. I have tried the ubuntu iscsi target package in a vmware environment, but it fails at the 2k8 tests. In simple terms I want to build a "Poor man's San" for windows and have it be able to do more than just be drives.

    This is out of interest rather then looking for a fix to a problem. What actually causes permissions on Mac OS X Systems to become messed up? Its an easily fixed problem (i.e. there's a quick and easy fix via Disk Utility) but its something I'd encountered a few times doing support in a Mac-reseller store without actually understanding the causes. I'd guess that part of it is due to some applications not playing nicely, but what else might be the source of this issue?

  • Switching to Linux and Keeping Windows With VirtualBox

    Hi guys, I'm currently running a Vista machine, but would like to switch over to Linux, Ubuntu in particular. My question is can I switch over to Ubuntu, keep my Windows partition and use VirtualBox to access the pre-existing Windows partition? Or does VirtualBox require me to create a new install for Guest operating systems? If not, are there any other free alternatives to accomplish this? Thanks

    On Linux systems I can watch -n1 tail /var/log/whatever.log or watch -n1 grep somestuff /var/log/whatever.log To show updates to a log every 1 seconds. On FreeBSD however, the watch command does something else entirely. Who knows a good FreeBSD command for what I'm trying to do? =)

    With Vista and up, 64-bit versions of Windows no longer support 16-bit programs, but 32-bit versions can still run them. Windows 8 has changed a lot of things from even Windows 7, and there were rumors a while back that it would only be available in 64-bit[1][2] which seems not to be the case anymore. It’s no secret thet Microsoft is pushing users to migrate to 64-bit systems. Have they dropped 16-bit support from Windows 8 altogether (including 32-bit versions)?

    I am a software developer, and I need to use old version of Borland/Embarcadero Delphi 7 for one software. The others ones are PHP software. I will have soon a 64 bits PC, running Linux, but I need a Windows 32 bits virtual machine for Delphi (because Delphi 7 is a bit old, and our clients still use Windows XP 32 bits systems).     Firefox can be startet via Commandline How can I run an application with command line arguments in Mac OS Is there an argument to make it start in 32 bit ? I know i could select it via finder, but thats no option for my problem I have solved a similar problem for chrome by creating an Automator "Launcher" which start Chrome with deactivated flash, but for that I need to know whether there is a command line argument to set 32bit. Maybe by changing systems settings by "default" ?

I mean, when pressing key, does the keyboard send a specific signal indicating what it represents (if so, why needing to specify the layout?) or it sends a signal indicating its position (the second raw, third key) and then the OS detects what key is that from the layout specified?

If I would switch to another device and/or client, I would need to search for the last unread tweet, which is sometimes complicated (too many tweets).   • Eject LiveCD + Reboot

    We use LiveCD's alot in my line of work. Whether it be fscking file systems, recovering data from a customer to rm'd his server, etc. I'm looking for a quick way to eject the CDROM and reboot the server. Does anyone have any one-liners to do this or any other suggestions? Using 'eject' doesn't work most of the time, from what I've tested / used. We're using RHEL / Cent on most of our servers if that helps :D
