Dealing with all that data simply requires more horse power and some very specialized techniques. In some cases, teams are trying to push hardware to the breaking point. Under those conditions, you need to be very clever just to get things to work -- let alone to get them to be fast. We are very quickly moving from a world where everything happens in a transaction to one where if you were to even consider using a transaction, you've lost." When asked about the greatest misconceptions about performance tuning that he currently encounters, he said, “If you have a performance problem, you should start looking at code at the very least and for that extra step, whip out an execution profiler. I'm not going to say that I never use execution profilers or look at code. What I will say is that execution profilers are effective for a small subset of performance problems and code is literally the last thing you should look at.And what is the most exciting thing happening in the world of Java today? “Interesting question because so many people would say that nothing exciting is happening in Java. Some might be disappointed that a few features have slipped in terms of scheduling. But I'd disagree with the first group and I'm not so concerned about the slippage because I still see a lot of exciting things happening. First, lambda will finally be with us and with lambda will come better ways.” For JavaOne, he is proctoring for Heinz Kabutz's lab. “I'm actually looking forward to that more than I am to my own talk,” he remarked. “Heinz will be the third non-Sun/Oracle employee to present a lab and the first since Oracle began hosting JavaOne.   • Wireless acting weird ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    I'm kinda new here, so please bear with me. My wireless driver is acting very weird. It shows my router's name, but when it is connecting (after entering the correct password), the icon on the tray is like, refreshing every once in a second, while showing the animation that it is connecting. And after a few seconds, error message come up saying that wireless network is disconnected. I installed the drive through "additional drivers". What info do you need?   • libreoffice on Mint14 problem : save as 2003 doc

    When saving a doc file (MS office 2003) as a doc file, libreoffice crashes and the file without any updates goes into recovery mode ... I installed mint14 from scratch and did not modify anything the odd thing with mint13 and libreoffice, there is no problem (save as works fine) with an upgraded mint14, there is no problem (save as works fine) this happed on acer one d522 machine and a no-name PC (amd based) both are running a 64 bit version of mint (virgin install) the other machines : - acer X1370 upgraded mint14 and - a dell 1520 (mint13 out of the box) do not show this proble please help... something I forgot or a bug?   • What to watch out for when writing code at an Interview?

    Hi, I have read that at a lot of companies you have to write code at an interview. On the one hand I see that it makes sense to ask for a work sample. On the other hand: What kind of code do you expect to be written in 5 minutes? And what if they tell me "Write an algorithm that does this and that" but I cannot think of a smart solution or even write code that doesn't semantically work? I am particularly interested in that question because I do not have that much commercial programming experience, 2 years part-time, one year full-time. (But I am interested in programming languages since nearly 15 years though usually I was more concentrated in playing with the language rather than writing large applications...) And actually I consider my debugging and problem solving skills much better than my coding skills. I sometimes see myself not writing the most beautiful code when looking back, but on the other hand I often come up with solutions for hard problems. And I think I am very good at optimizing, fixing, restructuring existing code, but I have problems with writing new applications from scratch. The software design sucks... ;-) Therefore I don't feel comfortable when thinking about this code writing situation at an interview... So what do the interviewers expect? What kind of information about my code writing are they interested in? Philip

  • Specifying the bounce-back address for email

    I'm having a problem getting emails to bounce to a specific email address, different to the From address. A particular client requires that we send emails from a specific email address (call it [email protected]). Our Exchange admins have created an account on the Exchange box so that we can log in and send from that address. Our Exchange server is spoofing that address / domain. This works fine. Unfortunately the emails sent from [email protected] are not bouncing back to us. They are presumably bouncing back to the contact account at clientcompany.com (which may or may not exist). I've inserted a header [email protected] with the assumption that this field determines where bouncebacks are sent. Other documents indicate that this field should never be populated by the originating SMTP system. Other websites again talk about a field called Errors-To which is apparently non-standard. So - which field is the correct one, and what does it depend on? Any ideas why my Return-Path is not working? I'd really like to get Exchange to correctly bounce a message addressed to an invalid server! update: Continuing to dig, and my Return-Path work was only adding an extended property at the end of the header block, but Exchange appears to be still adding its own Return-Path value at the top. Delivered-To: [email protected] Received: by 1.1.1.1 with SMTP ... Return-Path: <[email protected]> Received: from ... ... ... Subject: Test Message-ID: ... Return-Path: kirk[email protected] According to the Microsoft.com, I cannot set the Return-Path as it is determined by the MAIL FROM - which seems consistent with what I've previously read. But now I'm stuck - how do I change this MAIL FROM value programmatically within Exchange 2007?

  • optimizing file share performance on Win2k8?

    We have a case where we're accessing a RAID array (drive E:) on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 x86 box. (Recently installed, nothing other than SQL Server 2005 on the server.) In one scenario, when directly accessing it (E:\folder\file.xxx) we get 45MBps throughput to a video file. If we access the same file on the same array, but through UNC path (\server\folder\file.xxx) we get about 23MBps throughput with the exact same test. Obviously the second test is going through more layers of the stack, but that's a major performance hit. What tuning should we be looking at for making the UNC path be closer in performance to the direct access case? Thanks, Kirk (corrected: it is CIFS not SMB, but generalized title to 'file share'.) (additional info: this happens during the read from a single file, not an issue across multiple connections. the file is on the local machine, but exposed via file share. so client and file server are both same Windows 2008 server.)

    I am looking into the possibility/feasibility/resources for building a cross compiler which takes a procedural or Object Oriented language like C, or Java and compiling it into SQL. I understand that the advantage of SQL code is performing set operations which is fundamentally different from procedural languages which generally process 1 at a time.   • Converting 2D coordinates from multiple viewpoints into 3D coordinates

    Here's the situation. I've got a set of 2D coordinates that specify a point on an image. These 2D coordinates relate to an event that happened in a 3D space (video game). I have 5 images with the same event point on it, so I have 5 sets of 2D coordinates for a single 3D coordinate. I've tried everything I can think to translate these 2D coordinates into 3D coordinates, but the math just escapes me. I have a good estimate of the coordinates from which each image was taken, they're not perfect but they're close. I tried simplifying this and opening up Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling application. I placed 5 cameras at the coordinates where the pictures were taken and lined up the pictures with the event points for each one and tried to find a link, but nothing was forthcoming. I know it's a math question, but like I said, I just can't get it. I took physics in high school 6 years ago, but we didn't deal with a whole lot of this sort of thing. Any help will be very much appreciated, I've been thinking on it for quite a while and I just can't come up with anything.

  • excel vba to CRUD drupal nodes

    We need to periodically migrate Excel reports data into Drupal nodes. We looked at replicating some Excel functionality in Drupal with slickgrid, but it wasn't up to snuff. The Excel reports people don't want to double-enter their data, but their data is important to be in this Drupal site. They have hundreds of Excel reports, and update a row in each weekly. We want a button at the row end to fire a VBA macro that submits the data to Drupal, where a new node is created from the info submitted. (Yes, we are experienced with both Drupal and VBA; all users and the site are behind our firewall.) We need the new node's nid or URL returned so we can then create a link in Excel directly to that node Site is D6, using Services 3.x module. I tried the REST server module, but we can't get it to retrieve data without session authentication on, which we can't do from Excel. (unless you can?) I also noticed the 'data' it was returning via browser url was 14 or 20 nodes' info, not the one nid requested (Example: http://mysite.com/services/rest/report/node/30161) When I attempt to create a simple node like this from VBA: Dim MyURL as String MyURL = "http://mysite.com/services/rest/report/node?node[type]=test&node[title]=testing123&node[field_test_one][0][value]=123" Set objHTTP = CreateObject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP") With objHTTP .Open "POST", MyURL, False .setRequestHeader "Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" .send (MyURL) End With I get HTTP Status: Unauthorized: Access denied for user 0 "anonymous" and HTTP Response: null Everything I search for has examples in php or java, nothing in VBA. Also tried switching to using an XMLRPC server but that's even more confusing. We would like json (used application/json, set formatter accordingly in REST server settings), but will use anything that works. Ideas? Thanks in advance!

    I am seeking the simplest working example of a two pass HLSL pixel shader. It can do anything really, but the main idea is to perform "ping ponging" to take the output of the first pass and then send it for the second pass. In my example I want to draw to the R channel and then draw to the G channel and produce a simple Venn Diagram in the shader, but need to detect overlap. I can currently detect one or the other but not overlap. There are a red and green circle overlapping, and I want to put a dynamic texture map in the overlap region. I can currently put it in either or.   • Would security be comprimised if I install a gui (e.g. zPanel) for LAMP?

    I am an Ubuntu/Linux noob. There are many questions I have regarding the use of my system as a server. First and foremost is security. I want to install a simple GUI (zPanel appears the most user friendly) that will allow others to log into the server and database with ease, similar to a hosting service, though my intent is for the development of one site. Upon looking at the instructions of numerous GUI's, they require installation as root. This makes me uneasy, as my thoughts spiral to the possibilities of the developers creating the elusive 'back-door', thereby giving them root access to my entire system. Am I just being paranoid or is that theoretically possible? If it is possible, what steps are necessary to ensure security?

  • SQL Server Reporting Services proxy timeout (ASP.NET)

    Morning, We are using SSRS (2005) and have a ASP.NET frontend using the SSRS WebControl. I've boiled the problem down the time it takes for one particular report to be generated is greater than the timeout on the proxy server. It looks like the way the SSRS web control tries to do things is by performing an HTTP request for the report, however the problem with this is the request can timeout potentially before the report has generated. Looking at the HTTP traffic the response is a 504 (gateway timeout). Is there a way to increase the timeout or change SSRS WebControl to use more robust polling mechanism (which isn't dependant on the timeout of the HTTP request). I could be wrong but I don't think ServerReport.Timeout property would resolve the issue we are seeing? Any thoughts? Philip

    Hello everyone, I'm looking for a way to determine if the user switches virtual desktops under X11. I'm using Python with X11 libraries and PyGTK. I found some working examples in C, but I lack the expertise to translate them into Python, and I read the source code of several X11 pager applications (fbpanel, pypanel), but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Do I have to register for a signal? Using X11 or GTK? Do I have to busy-wait? I'm completely new to both X11 and GTK, so any hints/help would be greatly appreciated. On the other hand I have doubts that these examples represent code of complex real world applications. In my code for instance I never add functions to bare objects but rather to their prototypes. Moreover the prototype feature is hidden from the user, suggesting classical OOP rather than idiomatic Javascript. The array comprehension example would look in my code probably like this: cubes = $.map(list, math.cube); // which is 8 characters less using jQuery...

  • What is the difference between CSDA and CSDP?

    This question is in reference to the IEEE's CSDA and CSDP certifications. I've already taken the CSDA course, which covered all of the knowledge areas in the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK). I'm thinking about doing the CSDP certification as well, but I can't find anywhere that tells me how it differs from the CSDA. I know that it's aimed more at professionals rather than recent graduates, and I'd imagine that it covers the same areas as the CSDA, but in greater detail. Unfortunately I can't find much evidence to back that up. This is making it difficult to justify to my boss that he should spend several hundred pounds of the group's training budget on it. So the question is: What does the CSDP offer that the CSDA doesn't?

I know nothing about website building, HTML etc. so I'm using a wysiwyg editer (weebly). How I would like the site to function: Families upload their information into profiles Au pairs do the same families can view a limited part of an au pairs' profile until they pay a deposit After deposit is payed, all au pairs' profile information becomes open to families Families can order au pairs and confirm their order with another payment payment must be made before 'order' is confirmed By 'order' I mean full communications become open between the family and the au pair they have 'ordered' as well as travel information being sent to another agency the site needs to be linked with a bank account (e.g paypal) and another agency, who will look after the flight bookings etc. A website already exists for this business however it just contains information on the business and application forms - if the site becomes fully automated it will relieve a lot of strain on administration in the office (dealing with applications, travel information etc.)
