  • What are the options for hosting a small Plone site?

    I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients.   • Migrating data from Plone to Liferay, or how could I retrieve information from Plone's Data.fs

    Hello, all. I need to migrate data from a Plone-based portal to Liferay. Has anyone some idea on how to do it? Anyway, I am trying to retrieve data from Data.fs and store it in a representation easier to work, such as JSON. To do it, I need to know which objects I should get from Plone's Data.fs. I already got the Products.CMFPlone.Portal.PloneSite instance from the Data.fs, but I cannot get anything from it.     I have a plone zinstance set up through Apache Proxy on OS X Server 10.5. The server is set up with a single vhost on port 80, with Proxy & Proxypass directives to the Plone zinstance: ProxyPass / http://localhost:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/server:80/Plone/VirtualHostRoot/ ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/server:80/Plone/VirtualHostRoot/ However, I have some static HTML and PHP content that I want to display in an iframe via the plone site. I'm thinking I'll need to set up another vhost on a different port, then just specify the port # inline?

    I had a simple plone site running on my Ubuntu 8.10 box, setup by following instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/forum/server/Plone Now the computer got an Ubuntu 9.04 install from scratch, and I want to get the site up and running. As far as I understand several python libraries from 9,04 are not compatible with plone. Is it easier to get plone working on my box and start my instance(how?), or recover the content from the instance folder(how?) and setup another content management system(which?)

    I need a blob file field as part of a content type in plone. plone.app.blob's BlobField should provide this, but I can't find how to get a URL to download the file including the original filename (e.g. http://plone.site/plone/obj/orig-file-name.avi). Is there a way to do this using plone.app.blob? Alternately, there are a few pointers on the web pointing to plone.namedfile to do this. plone.namedfile seems to rely on z3c.blobfile. How does z3c.blobfile differ from plone.app.blob? Is one of these methods better than the other? vik

  • Better filesystem for ZODB and Plone.app.blob

    I am interested to know which Linux file system is best for hosting Zope's Object Database (Data.fs) and Plone.app.blob (blobstorage). Various reviews from the Internet suggests that XFS is good for hosting both. XFS is fast and works well with large files. Anyone using XFS for Zope or Plone? What optimization flags, if any, do you use for XFS? Note that this is a repost. I originally asked this on StackOverflow and was given a suggestion to post on Severfault instead.

  • Installing Plone on Centos fails: Unable to find libssl or openssl/ssl.h.

    My dedicated Server has CentOS 5.5. I tried to install Plone, so I basically did: wget launchpad.net/plone/4.0/4.0.2/+download/Plone-4.0.2-UnifiedInstaller.tgz tar xzf Plone-4.0.2-UnifiedInstaller.tgz cd Plone-4.0.2-UnifiedInstaller ./install.sh zeo I ran into the following error: Unable to find libssl or openssl/ssl.h. If you wish to build without SSL support, run install.sh again with --without-ssl flag. Otherwise, install your platform's openssl-dev libraries and headers and try again. After this error I successfully installed openssl: yum install openssl And i tried to install Plone again. But I keep getting the error: "Unable to find libssl or openssl/ssl.h". Anybody an idea what I'missing?

    I'm searching for a way to put widgets from several services (PicasaWeb, Yahoo Pipes, Delicious bookmarks, etc.) on the community site I host on Plone (currently 3.2.1). I'm looking for a way to allow a group of users to use dangerous html tags. There are some ways I see, but I don't know how to implement those. One would be changing safe_html for the pages editors own (1). Another would be to allow those tags on some subtree (2). And yet another finding an equivalent of "static text portlet" that would display in the middle panel (3). We could then use some of the composite products (I stumbled upon Collage and CMFContentPanels), to include the unsafe content on other sites. My site has been ridden by advert bots, so I don't want to remove the filtering all together. I don't have an easy (no false positives) way of checking which users are bots, so deploying captcha now wouldn't help either. The question is: How to implement any of those solutions? (I already asked that on plone mailing list without an answer, so I thought I would give it another try here.)

    Hi, I've been tasked with setting up a subversion server next to a Plone instance. The situation is that the Plone instance is already in a "production" state because there are outside users that can access it any moment. I believe setting up a LDAP and binding both, the Plone and subversion instance, to it for authentication is the best solution. So, my question is "how do I export already existing users and respective credentials from a Plone instance to an LDAP install for a seamless transition?" Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

I want to ensure that JS is always enabled while browsing any part of the plone site. While browsing, if JS is disabled, I can redirect to another page with tag to enable the JS in the browser and give a hlink to the site back if it is enabled. I am using Plone 4.1

  • Plone Active Directory group filter

    I am currently trying to configure the Plone LDAP plugin for Active directory. Thus far all is good and I’m getting users and groups through. The usage is for Cyn.In However the problem I’m facing is thus: The users search has the ability to filter, which is great. I can use the memberOf or department filter to just grab the users I want. However all our groups simply live in one OU, which means I’m getting over 30 pages of groups of which 99% are just not necessary. Sadly I don’t have control over our AD, so can’t just shift the ones I want into their own OU. Is there any way you can think of to also filter groups based on some kind of LDAP criteria?

We want to be able to print the entire hierarchy, which means rendering the whole thing on one page. I see a number of web sites like this one that seem to have something like this. Is it manually done or is there some add-on I can get to make this feature possible?

    could anyone help me on my problem, my /var/plone folder's ownership was accidentally changed. can anyone tell me who the owner of this folder? could it be www:root or www-data:root or root:root? btw i changed it to www:root and some images and styles cannot be loaded on my site. Everytime somebody opens the site, it keeps loading and loading and after a few minutes it stops and some images are not loaded and style are not well displayed as it is supposed to be. thanks

  • Plone site randomly serving wrong content

    I have a Plone site that has begun to randomly serve up the wrong content. Any given content suddenly shows something else. Sometimes a JPEG loads a stylesheet instead or a stylesheet loads as a page or a page as an image. The images move around, some times our site logo shows a bullet, or one of the other site images. Fiddler shows the wrong content in the response, the apache logs show the content type of the incorrect file (so if the an image loads in place of a style sheet, apache shows that). We thought mod_proxy was the source of our grief, but we get the problem hitting Zope directly. I never get the wrong content using the Medusa Monitor to repeatedly hit the content. I do see ConflictErrors in the instance.log file, and they seem to be correlated to the problem, but not 100%. ZPublisher.Conflict ConflictError at \path\to\object: database conflict error (oid 0x3586, class BTrees._OIBTree.OIBTree, serial this txn started with blah, serial currently committed blah) (X conflicts (0 unresolved) since startup blah) I pulled that off the web, it's not from our logs, but it's the same message. This may be a red herring, it sounds like those messages are normal. We've updated to the 3.3.5, same problems. I'm at a loss. I'm wondering if there a good way to intercept what is being served? Secondly, is there a way to increase the verbosity of the access log to included the content-type? I've even seen the problem manifest in ZMI. It happens more often when we're authenticated. Sometimes it can take a thousand reloads to see the problem, other times it happens in different ways every time we reload. I believe we've seen this problem for a couple years, but it was very intermittent, a page would show the content of a GIF, then a reload later wouldn't happen for a long time. Now it's a huge problem.

    Hello everybody, I accidentally changed owner of all files on my plone site to plone, and I don't know how to fix this without reinstalling site, which won't be acceptable. I have backup version which keeps default owners but it's changed in the meanwhile on the dafault site. Maybe rsync can sync only ownerships between these copies??? Any idea would be precious.   • Plone, behaviour of URLs

    The situation is the following: I created a site with Plone, developed, used, but behind a test URL. Now it has to be published, but the test URL is not appropriate and I don't want to move the site. I think, if I use a redirect, it won't be appear in the URL-bar, only in the case of site start page. Am I wrong? (The test URL should not be used, because it will be a "semi-official" site.) What do you suggest to do? As far as I can see Plone uses absolute URLs everywhere. I can add relative URLs, but if I create a new page, a new event, etc., then they have absolute URLs on other automatically generated inner pages. Is there any way to convert these URLs to relative paths? Is there any setting possibilty where only a checkbox changes this default setting?

We could then use some of the composite products (I stumbled upon Collage and CMFContentPanels), to include the unsafe content on other sites. My site has been ridden by advert bots, so I don't want to remove the filtering all together. I don't have an easy (no false positives) way of checking which users are bots, so deploying captcha now wouldn't help either. The question is: How to implement any of those solutions? (I already asked that on plone mailing list without an answer, so I thought I would give it another try here.)

    Hi Stackoverflowers, if i rebuild my catalog in plone i get many of this infos: 2010-02-18T11:26:09 INFO Archetypes Error while trying to convert file contents to 'text/plain' in .getIndexable() of : Unable to find binary "wvHtml" in /sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin This happens to doc and pdf files. I don't wanna convert docs or pdfs. How can i disable it completly? Thanks for the help!
