• expand window to free space on screen in kde

- by Pascal Rosin
I am using Kubuntu and I want to expand the current window to the free space on the screen or to say it more precisely: I want to make the current window as big as possible without overlapping new windows (windows already overlapped should be ignored). Is there a keyboard shortcut or an extension to the KDE Window management, that realizes such a shortcut or a window button? I would also appreciate a hint, how to write a script that could do this window thing on keyboard shortcut invocation. I am a programmer but don't know what the best way is to control KDE Windows via script.

- by demogeek
I have a scenario where I have a popup window open and that will have links to open up another window that's going to pop open on top of the already open popup window. I've tried all sort of tricks (javascript window.open, target="_blank" etc.) but nothing seem to work. It always was opening the page on the already opened popup window. Any suggestions? Appreciated your help.

• Start/Stop Window Service from ASP.NET page

- by kaushalparik27
Last week, I needed to complete one task on which I am going to blog about in this entry. The task is "Create a control panel like webpage to control (Start/Stop) Window Services which are part of my solution installed on computer where the main application is hosted". Here are the important points to accomplish:[1] You need to add System.ServiceProcess reference in your application. This namespace holds ServiceController Class to access the window service.[2] You need to check the status of the window services before you explicitly start or stop it.[3] By default, IIS application runs under ASP.NET account which doesn't have access rights permission to window service. So, Very Important part of the solution is: Impersonation. You need to impersonate the application/part of the code with the User Credentials which is having proper rights and permission to access the window service. If you try to access window service it will generate "access denied" error. The alternatives are: You can either impersonate whole application by adding Identity tag in web.cofig as: <identity impersonate="true" userName="" password=""/>This tag will be under System.Web section. the "userName" and "password" will be the credentials of the user which is having rights to access the window service. But, this would not be a wise and good solution; because you may not impersonate whole website like this just to have access window service (which is going to be a small part of code).Second alternative is: Only impersonate part of code where you need to access the window service to start or stop it. I opted this one. But, to be fair; I am really unaware of the code part for impersonation. So, I just googled it and injected the code in my solution in a separate class file named as "Impersonate" with required static methods. In Impersonate class; impersonateValidUser() is the method to impersonate a part of code and undoImpersonation() is the method to undo the impersonation. Below is one example: You need to provide domain name (which is "." if you are working on your home computer), username and password of appropriate user to impersonate.[4] Here, it is very important to note that: You need to have to store the Access Credentials (username and password) which you are going to user for impersonation; to some secured and encrypted format. I have used Machinekey Encryption to store the value encrypted value inside database.[5] So now; The real part is to start or stop a window service. You are almost done; because ServiceController class has simple Start() and Stop() methods to start or stop a window service. A ServiceController class has parametrized constructor that takes name of the service as parameter.Code to Start the window service: Code to Stop the window service: Isn't that too easy! ServiceController made it easy :) I have attached a working example with this post here to start/stop "SQLBrowser" service where you need to provide proper credentials who have permission to access to window service. hope it would helps./.

• Window borders missing - gtk-window-decorator segmentation fault

- by Balakrshnan Ramakrishnan
I have been using Ubuntu for about 1 year now and I got a problem just two days ago. Suddenly I started experiencing a problem with the window borders (title bar with close, maximize, and minimize buttons). The problem : The window borders disappear I run "gtk-window-decorator --replace" For like 20 seconds everything is back to normal But it again returns to the problem. I searched over the Internet and found that my problem is similar to what is specified in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/814091 This bug report says that the "fix released". I updated everything using the Update Manager, but still the problem remains. Can anyone let me know whether the problem is fixed? If yes, can you please let me know how to do it? I have already tried normal replace/reset commands like unity --reset unity --replace compiz --replace The "window borders" plugin is on in CCSM (CompizConfig Settings Manager) and it points to "gtk-window-decorator". I use Ubuntu 11.10 on an Intel Core2Duo T6500 with AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4300 graphics card. If you need more information, please let me know.

• Clip a wpf Popup at bounds of a main window

- by BrandonS
From what I understand, the popup exists within it's own visual tree. However, I've noticed a few properties, Clip and ClipToBounds. What I am wanting to do is Visually clip a popup at the right and bottom edges of a window regardless of the fact that the popup is independent of the bounds of the window. I'm not using XAML, but if somebody knows how to do it in XAML, then that's fine. I can get to the main window using System.Windows.Application.Current.MainWindow. Is it possible from this to get a value that I can use to clip the popup? I'm assuming that if there is a value that I can use, then I would be able to bind the clipping of the popup to that value. This is really not necessary since after the popup initially opens, if the window gets moved or resized, the popup closes. So I would really only need to clip the popup when it opens. The reason I would like to do this is because although I am using a popup, I don't want it to appear as a popup that exists outside of the window. FYI this is for a popup calendar for a custom datebox. Any ideas, as well as clarification of misconceptions that I may have, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brandon

• window decoration command change

- by Pedro
I'm quite new to Ubuntu, and I don't know how to fix this: I have been experiencing the problem with window decorations that go away. I have been told that I could correct that with compiz fusion icon, just restarting the graphics whenever it happened. This solution only fixed the problem for like 30 seconds. Then I found out that the command inside the window decorator had changed, so I only had to reset it to default (/usr/bin/compiz-decorator). The only problem is that it keeps changing the command by itself once or twice a day. I can live with that, but I would like to find a more permanent solution, if there is one. I am running Ubuntu 11.10

• IE won't load PDF in a window created with window.open

- by Dean
Here's the problem, which only occurs in Internet Explorer (IE). I have a page that has links to several different types of files. Links from these files execute a Javascript function that opens a new window and loads the specific file. This works great, unless the file I need to open in the new window is a PDF in which case the window is blank, even though the URL is in the address field. Refreshing that window using F5 doesn't help. However, if I put the cursor in the address field and press <enter> the PDF loads right up. This problem only occurs in IE. I have seen it in IE 7 and 8 and am using Adobe Acrobat Reader 9. In Firefox (PC and Mac) everything works perfectly. In Chrome (Mac), the PDF is downloaded. In Safari (Mac) it works. In Opera (Mac) it prompts me to open or save. Basically, everything probably works fine, except for IE. I have searched for similar problems and have seen some posts where it was suggested to adjust some of the Internet Options on IE. I have tried this but it doesn't help, and the problem wasn't exactly the same anyway. Here's the Javascript function I use to open the new window. function newwin(url,w,h) { win = window.open(url,"temp","width="+w+",height="+h+",menubar=yes, toolbar=yes, location=yes, status=yes, scrollbars=auto, resizable=yes"); win.focus(); } You can see that I pass in the URL as well as the height, h, and width, w, of the window. I've used a function like this for years and as far as I know have never had a problem. I call the newwin() function using this. document.pdf (Yes, I know there are other, better ways than using inline JS, and I've even tried some of them because I've run out of things to try, but nothing works.) So, if anyone has an idea as to what might be causing this problem, I'd love to hear it.

• javascript window.open lost session on closing popup window

- by user341799
Hi I'm using window.open function to popup the window as I close it, the link in parent window are not working here is my code `var rcount =0; var radio_val = document.form1.ac_voucher_type_id.length; for (counter = 0; counter < radio_val; counter++){ if (document.form1.ac_voucher_type_id[counter].checked){ radio_choice = document.form1.ac_voucher_type_id[counter].value; //alert(document.form1.ac_voucher_type_id[counter].value); url1 = '?compid=&date='+document.getElementById('datepicker2').value+'&vouchertype='+radio_choice+'&voucherid='; url= typ+"entry.php"+url1; window.open(url,'',"width=500,height=500,scrollbars=yes"); }else{ rcount++; } } // alert(rcount); if(rcount==radio_val){ alert("Please select voucher type"); }` Please suggest the solution for this

• How reference popup object when opener page changes?

- by achairapart
This is driving me crazy! Scenario: The main page opens a pop-up window and later calls a function in it: newWin = window.open(someurl,'newWin',options); ...some code later... newWin.remoteFunction(options); and it's ok. Now, popup is still open and Main Page changes to Page 2. In Page 2 newWin doesn't exist anymore and I need to recreate the popup window object reference in order to call again the remote function (newWin.remoteFunction) I tried something like: newWin = open('','newWin', options); if (!newWin || newWin.closed || !newWin.remoteFunction) { newWin = window.open(someurl,'newWin',options); } And it works, I can call newWin.remoteFunction again BUT Safari for some reason gives Focus() to the popup window everytime the open() method is called breaking the navigation (I absolutely need the popup working in the background). Only workaround I can think to solve this is to create an interval in the popup with: if(window.opener && !window.opener.newWin) window.opener.newWin = self; and then set another interval in the opener Page with some try/catch but it is inelegant and very inefficient. so, I wonder, it's really so hard to get the popup object reference between different pages in the opener window?

• Image map popup on rollover, with popup text drawn from database

- by lbholland
I have a custom map of the USA with about 20 polygonal hot spots. I would like a box to pop up next to each hot spot on hover, with text and links drawn from my DB specific to the location. I would have thought this is a common situation, but I can't find a solution that works. I tried using an asp:imagemap and an ajax popup extender but you can't assign IDs to hotspots and it doesn't support mouseover events. I tried css with an html image map but I can't figure out how to use css solutions with polygonal hot spots, and I also don't know how to link it to get the data from the db without asp targets (I'm not very familiar with jquery, which would work, I am guessing). Anyone know of any simple-ish solutions out there?

• When clicking below window title bar in KDE, window dragging is initiated. Can I change this behavior?

- by hdpq
this one is regarding KDE in Ubuntu 12.04. The thing is that whenever I click below the window title bar in KDE, the window manager always assumes I want to drag the window, not just activate it. Clicking the title bar activates the window without dragging it just fine, however I sometimes find it hard to click because it's rather narrow :) Is there any way to change this behavior (besides the obvious "make your title bar larger" thing)? I also assume this is happening to Gtk applications only (Firefox, Thunderbird, Synaptic), as I have tried it with several KDE apps (KWrite, KTorrent, Gwenview, Konsole) and noticed no such behavior. Thanks in advance!

• Iframe/Popup redirecting opener window

- by Bara
Hello all, I have a page located at x.com. On this page is a button that, when clicked, will launch a new window (using javascript's window.open() method) to a page that is located at z.com. The popup does a few things, then redirects the original window (the opener, x.com) to a different page based on some parameters defined in the popup. This works fine in Firefox/Chrome, but not in IE. In IE (8 specifically, but I believe 7 also has this problem) the original window (the opener) is not redirected. Instead, a new window comes up and THAT window is redirected. I've tried many different methods to try and get this to work, including changing the popup to an iframe loaded on the page and having a function on the opener that the popup/iframe call. The problem seems to be that IE refuses to allow cross-domain sites to talk to each other via javascript. Is there a way around this? How can I get the parent window to redirect to a page based on parameters in a popup or iframe? Bara

• Popup Details for a Table Record

- by shay.shmeltzer
This one started as an OTN how-to question that seemed like something that should work automatically - turns out you need a couple of small tweaks to get it working. The idea is to have a table on a page showing multiple records, you can click any row in the table - and get a pop-up window that shows more data about that row. At first I thought I'll just need to drag the same view twice to the page - once as a table and then as a form in a pop-up. But then the Form didn't reflect the new row that got selected in the table - you'll always see the first row you selected. Adding a Partial Page Rendering between the table and the pop-up didn't do the trick either. Then I realized that the content delivery attribute of the pop-up was set to lazy, when I switched it to immediate - everything worked. Here is a little demo showing the whole development process: Note that the content delivery method attribute is also something you might want to check if you see your tables being refreshed too often when you scroll through records for example.

• Find window previously opened by window.open

- by spender
We've got the following situation, running from a single domain: Page A uses window.open() to open a named window (a popup player). window.open() gives page A a reference to the window. User now reloads page A. The reference to the named window is lost. Using window.open() to "find" the window has the unfortunate side effect of reloading it (undesirable). Is there any other way to get a reference to this window?

Scenario: You have a file Window, where you want to drag a file from, and on top of this Window is another window, the destination: an app or another window. So you click on the file you want on the window underneath, and what happens? This is brought to the front and so the destination window is out of view, what a pain. How can you make the destination window stay on top? Windows and Linux please.

• Positioning / Scrolling problem with Flex popup.

- by user284163
Hi all, I'm trying to work out a specific problem I'm having with positioning in Flex using the PopUpManager. Basically I'm wanting to create a popup which will scroll with the parent container - this is necessary because the parent container is large and if the user's browser window isn't large enough (this will be the case the majority of the time) - they will have to use the scrollbar of the container to scroll down. The problem is that the popup is positioned relative to another component, and it needs to stay by that component. <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute"> <mx:Script> import mx.core.UITextField; import mx.containers.TitleWindow; import mx.managers.PopUpManager; private function clickeroo(event:MouseEvent):void { var popup:TitleWindow = new TitleWindow(); popup.width = 250; popup.height = 300; popup.title = "Example"; var tf:UITextField = new UITextField(); tf.wordWrap = true; tf.width = popup.width - 30; tf.text = "This window stays put and doesn't scroll when the hbox is scrolled (even with using the hbox as parent in the addPopUp method), I need the popup to be local to the HBox."; popup.addChild(tf); PopUpManager.addPopUp(popup, hbox, false); PopUpManager.centerPopUp(popup); } </mx:Script> <mx:HBox width="100%" height="2000" id="hbox"> <mx:Button label="Click Me" click="clickeroo(event)"/> </mx:HBox> </mx:Application> Could anyone give me any pointers in the right direction? Thanks.

• More Animation - Self Dismissing Dialogs

- by Duncan Mills
In my earlier articles on animation, I discussed various slide, grow and flip transitions for items and containers. In this article I want to discuss a fade animation and specifically the use of fades and auto-dismissal for informational dialogs. If you use a Mac, you may be familiar with Growl as a notification system, and the nice way that messages that are informational just fade out after a few seconds. So in this blog entry I wanted to discuss how we could make an ADF popup behave in the same way. This can be an effective way of communicating information to the user without "getting in the way" with modal alerts. This of course, has been done before, but everything I've seen previously requires something like JQuery to be in the mix when we don't really need it to be. The solution I've put together is nice and generic and will work with either <af:panelWindow> or <af:dialog> as a the child of the popup. In terms of usage it's pretty simple to use we just need to ensure that the popup itself has clientComponent is set to true and includes the animation JavaScript (animateFadingPopup) on a popupOpened event: <af:popup id="pop1" clientComponent="true"> <af:panelWindow title="A Fading Message..."> ... </af:panelWindow> <af:clientListener method="animateFadingPopup" type="popupOpened"/> </af:popup> The popup can be invoked in the normal way using showPopupBehavior or JavaScript, no special code is required there. As a further twist you can include an additional clientAttribute called preFadeDelay to define a delay before the fade itself starts (the default is 5 seconds) . To set the delay to just 2 seconds for example: <af:popup ...> ... <af:clientAttribute name="preFadeDelay" value="2"/> <af:clientListener method="animateFadingPopup" type="popupOpened"/> </af:popup> The Animation Styles As before, we have a couple of CSS Styles which define the animation, I've put these into the skin in my case, and, as in the other articles, I've only defined the transitions for WebKit browsers (Chrome, Safari) at the moment. In this case, the fade is timed at 5 seconds in duration. .popupFadeReset { opacity: 1; } .popupFadeAnimate { opacity: 0; -webkit-transition: opacity 5s ease-in-out; } As you can see here, we are achieving the fade by simply setting the CSS opacity property. The JavaScript The final part of the puzzle is, of course, the JavaScript, there are four functions, these are generic (apart from the Style names which, if you've changed above, you'll need to reflect here): The initial function invoked from the popupOpened event, animateFadingPopup which starts a timer and provides the initial delay before we start to fade the popup. The function that applies the fade animation to the popup - initiatePopupFade. The callback function - closeFadedPopup used to reset the style class and correctly hide the popup so that it can be invoked again and again. A utility function - findFadeContainer, which is responsible for locating the correct child component of the popup to actually apply the style to. Function - animateFadingPopup This function, as stated is the one hooked up to the popupOpened event via a clientListener. Because of when the code is called it does not actually matter how you launch the popup, or if the popup is re-used from multiple places. All usages will get the fade behavior. /** * Client listener which will kick off the animation to fade the dialog and register * a callback to correctly reset the popup once the animation is complete * @param event */ function animateFadingPopup(event) { var fadePopup = event.getSource(); var fadeCandidate = false; //Ensure that the popup is initially Opaque //This handles the situation where the user has dismissed //the popup whilst it was in the process of fading var fadeContainer = findFadeContainer(fadePopup); if (fadeContainer != null) { fadeCandidate = true; fadeContainer.setStyleClass("popupFadeReset"); } //Only continue if we can actually fade this popup if (fadeCandidate) { //See if a delay has been specified var waitTimeSeconds = event.getSource().getProperty('preFadeDelay'); //Default to 5 seconds if not supplied if (waitTimeSeconds == undefined) { waitTimeSeconds = 5; } // Now call the fade after the specified time var fadeFunction = function () { initiatePopupFade(fadePopup); }; var fadeDelayTimer = setTimeout(fadeFunction, (waitTimeSeconds * 1000)); } } The things to note about this function is the initial check that we have to do to ensure that the container is currently visible and reset it's style to ensure that it is. This is to handle the situation where the popup has begun the fade, and yet the user has still explicitly dismissed the popup before it's complete and in doing so has prevented the callback function (described later) from executing. In this particular situation the initial display of the dialog will be (apparently) missing it's normal animation but at least it becomes visible to the user (and most users will probably not notice this difference in any case). You'll notice that the style that we apply to reset the opacity - popupFadeReset, is not applied to the popup component itself but rather the dialog or panelWindow within it. More about that in the description of the next function findFadeContainer(). Finally, assuming that we have a suitable candidate for fading, a JavaScript timer is started using the specified preFadeDelay wait time (or 5 seconds if that was not supplied). When this timer expires then the main animation styleclass will be applied using the initiatePopupFade() function Function - findFadeContainer As a component, the <af:popup> does not support styleClass attribute, so we can't apply the animation style directly. Instead we have to look for the container within the popup which defines the window object that can have a style attached. This is achieved by the following code: /** * The thing we actually fade will be the only child * of the popup assuming that this is a dialog or window * @param popup * @return the component, or null if this is not valid for fading */ function findFadeContainer(popup) { var children = popup.getDescendantComponents(); var fadeContainer = children[0]; if (fadeContainer != undefined) { var compType = fadeContainer.getComponentType(); if (compType == "oracle.adf.RichPanelWindow" || compType == "oracle.adf.RichDialog") { return fadeContainer; } } return null; } So what we do here is to grab the first child component of the popup and check its type. Here I decided to limit the fade behaviour to only <af:dialog> and <af:panelWindow>. This was deliberate. If we apply the fade to say an <af:noteWindow> you would see the text inside the balloon fade, but the balloon itself would hang around until the fade animation was over and then hide. It would of course be possible to make the code smarter to walk up the DOM tree to find the correct
to apply the style to in order to hide the whole balloon, however, that means that this JavaScript would then need to have knowledge of the generated DOM structure, something which may change from release to release, and certainly something to avoid. So, all in all, I think that this is an OK restriction and frankly it's windows and dialogs that I wanted to fade anyway, not balloons and menus. You could of course extend this technique and handle the other types should you really want to. One thing to note here is the selection of the first (children[0]) child of the popup. It does not matter if there are non-visible children such as clientListener before the <af:dialog> or <af:panelWindow> within the popup, they are not included in this array, so picking the first element in this way seems to be fine, no matter what the underlying ordering is within the JSF source. If you wanted a super-robust version of the code you might want to iterate through the children array of the popup to check for the right type, again it's up to you. Function - initiatePopupFade On to the actual fading. This is actually very simple and at it's heart, just the application of the popupFadeAnimate style to the correct component and then registering a callback to execute once the fade is done. /** * Function which will kick off the animation to fade the dialog and register * a callback to correctly reset the popup once the animation is complete * @param popup the popup we are animating */ function initiatePopupFade(popup) { //Only continue if the popup has not already been dismissed if (popup.isPopupVisible()) { //The skin styles that define the animation var fadeoutAnimationStyle = "popupFadeAnimate"; var fadeAnimationResetStyle = "popupFadeReset"; var fadeContainer = findFadeContainer(popup); if (fadeContainer != null) { var fadeContainerReal = AdfAgent.AGENT.getElementById(fadeContainer.getClientId()); //Define the callback this will correctly reset the popup once it's disappeared var fadeCallbackFunction = function (event) { closeFadedPopup(popup, fadeContainer, fadeAnimationResetStyle); event.target.removeEventListener("webkitTransitionEnd", fadeCallbackFunction); }; //Initiate the fade fadeContainer.setStyleClass(fadeoutAnimationStyle); //Register the callback to execute once fade is done fadeContainerReal.addEventListener("webkitTransitionEnd", fadeCallbackFunction, false); } } } I've added some extra checks here though. First of all we only start the whole process if the popup is still visible. It may be that the user has closed the popup before the delay timer has finished so there is no need to start animating in that case. Again we use the findFadeContainer() function to locate the correct component to apply the style to, and additionally we grab the DOM id that represents that container. This physical ID is required for the registration of the callback function. The closeFadedPopup() call is then registered on the callback so as to correctly close the now transparent (but still there) popup. Function - closeFadedPopup The final function just cleans things up: /** * Callback function to correctly cancel and reset the style in the popup * @param popup id of the popup so we can close it properly * @param contatiner the window / dialog within the popup to actually style * @param resetStyle the syle that sets the opacity back to solid */ function closeFadedPopup(popup, container, resetStyle) { container.setStyleClass(resetStyle); popup.cancel(); } First of all we reset the style to make the popup contents opaque again and then we cancel the popup. This will ensure that any of your user code that is waiting for a popup cancelled event will actually get the event, additionally if you have done this as a modal window / dialog it will ensure that the glasspane is dismissed and you can interact with the UI again. What's Next? There are several ways in which this technique could be used, I've been working on a popup here, but you could apply the same approach to in-line messages. As this code (in the popup case) is generic it will make s pretty nice declarative component and maybe, if I get time, I'll look at constructing a formal Growl component using a combination of this technique, and active data push. Also, I'm sure the above code can be improved a little too. Specifically things like registering a popup cancelled listener to handle the style reset so that we don't loose the subtle animation that takes place when the popup is opened in that situation where the user has closed the in-fade dialog.

Hi, on a web page i am trying to redirect the browser to another page on the same site. the code is very simple for that: window.location = "/path1/path2" on safari - both windows as well as mac - a message box containing only the text "http://domain.com" comes up. I have tried different ways of specifying this: location.href, windows.assign(...) ... and the all have the same behavior. Did any of you see this? and do you have a solution for this? Thanks.

• Intercept close Popup from Parent Page

- by sangi
Hi all, I have a question. In an html page, I have javascript code that allows me to open and close a popup window by clicking on a link displayed in the link, so the text displayed in the link changes to the state of the popup window (open-closed). With a variable true / false I manage the opening and closing of the popup window to click on a link whose text is aligned "opened popup" / "closed popup". The next step is to make this same change in state (true / false, "opened popup" / "close popup") directly by closing the popup window. The idea is to not have to refresh the page. Is this possible? Thank you and best regards

• Compiz not drawing window controls in ubuntu 11.10

- by Siva Prasad Varma
I have recently installed driver for my ATI graphic card in my Dell Studio laptop. I have also read this somewhere on the web that Ubuntu enables compiz window manager by default if your hardware can run it. Is it true ? In my case before Installing graphic card driver the window manager was Metacity, but now I have compiz as my Window manager. I found this out uisng Displex Indicator applet also confirmed by wmctrl -m. From the time I have installed graphic card drivers, the window manager(Compiz) is not drawing window control buttons for some of the windows. For example if I open a terminal I have to close it using key board shortcuts or use the File - Quit option in app-menu. Also I am not able to move the window because of this. From then when-ever I find a window without window control buttons I am restarting the window manager using Displex Indicator applet. But this is very annoying and also consumes a lot of time(when I am doing my work). Can any one suggest any solution for this. What are up's and down's of using Compiz Vs Metacity.

• window.event !== window.event in IE

- by iacnats
Code:

click

Result: IE(i have tested IE6 - IE8) says: window === window window.event !== window.event All other browsers say: window === window window.event === window.event What's the reason for IE's response? Thanks.
