  • Presario r3000 hangs on boot to Ubuntu 12.04

    I have a Compaq Presario r3000 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit. 1.2GB RAM, with a nvidia Gforce 420 Go with 32MB RAM. It hangs on bootup about 3 out of 4 times at either the purple screen, or with a cursor in the upper left corner. Booting without a splash screen shows it hanging after attempting to initialize the floppy controller. Unity has never booted to 3D either, only 2D, with the additional drivers always failing to install. I searched all over this board and found similar issues, and tried everything there. Extensive vid driver install and uninstalls. Network issues that I've since resolved. I even found a very similar topic with a fix that didn't work. I'll probably try a clean install today (given how much I've probably messed up), and I would really appreciate any ideas. I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, so if you would like to see any error logs or configs, please walk me through exactly how to get and post them here. Thanks.

    I have problem with the internal microphone not working on Ubuntu 12.04. It looks like a common problem on most of the laptops running ubuntu 12.04. I tried a lot of possible solutions available online but nothing seems to work! sudo aplay -l gives: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 By the way, the Laptop has no HDMI port! I've seen the same problem with Sony laptop but the mic was working with too much static noise. Thank you.

  • Compaq Presario R3000 randomly fails to boot on 11.10, 12.04, 12.10

    I’m trying to figure what to do with random failures to boot. My old HP Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP-M sometimes boots, sometimes hangs with a blank screen during boot, and sometimes hangs on shutdown. After a few boot attempts it will finally boot to the GNU GRUB screen where I usually can select Recovery Mode, then select return to a normal boot, and the thing will startup and function normally. The pattern is not repeatable and seemed to start after upgrading from 11.04. Clean installs of 12.04 and 12.10 on newly-formatted hard drives make no difference. If this might be a clue, hangs on shutdown often stop at a line with: “pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff”. I did try the “acpi=off” modification from 11.10 randomly fails to boot on Compaq Presario R3000 with no change in these random boot failures. Any suggestions sure appreciated.

  • Wireless not working with a Compaq Presario CQ57

    This is the first time I installed ubuntu. I first installed 11.04 then upgraded. When I installed 11.04, the wireless card was detected and the driver was installed instantly. Everything worked so far. The thing is that as soon as I upgraded to 12.04, it stopped working. I've tried several solutions from all of the internet but nothing seems to work. What can I do? I really don't know much about ubuntu.

    I have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and my touchpad is not working at times on rebooting. There is no touchpad tab on system settings-mouse and touchpad. I have tried using the first two answers given here. I have tried omega@debasmita-laptop:~$ synclient TouchpadOff=0 Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded? When I try to open synaptiks it says no touchpad detected. However, USB mouse is working fine so far. Is there a solution to the problem?

  • Ubuntu 9.0.4 Presario S4000NX Fan Speed

    I recently install Ubuntu 9.0.4 on a Presario S4000NX and the CPU fan speed is kept at max. With Windows XP installed the fan speed would increase/decrease as required. I've tried to install lm-sensors and run the sensors-detect. It recommended that I load the modules which I did: smsc47m192 i2c-i801 When running sensor-detect it gave me this strange message: Trying family SMSC Found SMSC LPC47M15x/192/997 Super IO Fan Sensors (but not activated) Running the sensors command gives me a list of voltages and CPU and temperature but doesn't list any fans. After doing some Internet research I then tried to load the smsc47m1 module but I get the following error: FATAL: Error inserting smsc47m1 (/lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/smsc47m1.ko): no such device The file smsc47m1.ko does exist in the listed folder. Any suggestions for getting the fan speed (and the noise) down in Ubuntu? Thanx. - Chris P.S. - I would have put better tags but Server Fault wouldn't let me.

    My Compaq Presario CQ40 (yeah, its pretty old) suddenly turns off after about 1/2 - 1 hour usage without any notice or warning. The power cable and adapter works fine (indicator bulbs show that power is given to the laptop), but it seems like machine suddenly plugged off from the power source. And when I try to switch it on, after the sudden turn off it simply won't turn on. I can only turn it on after letting it to rest for at least couple of hours! ** The battery has been dead for some time now, but it has been working fine on direct power supply until recently. Has anyone encountered this? and hopefully knows any cure?

    I am currently studying for an A-Plus certification to which was recently added troubleshooting Windows 7 to the exam. You also have to be very familiar with Vista as well. I only have XP on my Compaq Presario V2000, but I wanted to set it up ( I believe I have the minimum requirements for both ) so that I could run trial versions of Vista and 7 virtually.Windows 2000 is also on the exam. Is there an easy legal way to do this? I wouldn't mind partitioning my HDD for the four operating systems either. Thnx if you have any ideas, JLS

  • Cannot install windows. Compaq Presario CQ62

    I bought a used Compaq Presario CQ62 for cheap, and went to install windows on it. I formatted the partition and went to install when I got this error.... Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070017 I have used this disk before with no problems, but internet searching suggested I burn one at 2x speed because that helps for some reason... I'm burning one now, but my question is, why would I get this error, OTHER than the disc being bad? I'm pretty certain this one isn't as I have used it before... (ok so the slowly burned cd (using imgburn) didn't work either so it's DEFINITELY not the disc) Thanks in advanced for any answers Also I took one stick of ram out because internet searching also suggested that, but it didn't make a difference. Also I ran memory and hard drive checks and they passed fine. Also I reset the motherboard options to default What could it be!? Help I'm completely stumped...

How this happened - I accidently hit my leg on the laptop and jammed it against the wall and ever since the monitor is like this .I plan to replace the Monitor by buying a spare parts laptop that sells in ebay .     I have a Compaq Presario R4000 running Ubuntu Linux 9.10 karmic. The system runs very hot and one of the fans is wither never running or always running at the slowest speed. For a while I thought the fan was dead but I just updated the BIOS (Phoenix BIOS) and during the update, that fan suddenly kicked in at full speed! How can I get that fan to spin up during normal usage? I have tried sensores-detect but all it found was k8temp, no fans... (SpeedFan under windows found no fans either)

    Thing is, I don't have a clue of Linux systems, I usually use WinXP. Bought a notebook with SuSE 11 on it, because I have my XP licence and thought I could install that if I found the chipset drivers for the hardware (which I'm not completely sure I have the right versions of). Then I thought I'd give it a shot with the SuSE, looked nice enough. But I can't get my external hd to work (tried force mount) and the banshee doesn't do anything like playing video. Since that is one of the two main purposes of this notebook, I need to get that to work. Tried downloading VLC player, but that only works with SuSE 11.1 upwards. So I downloaded a SuSE 11.3 and burned the iso. But surprise, no way the notebook would boot from cd. Same with the XP cd (considered setting up a dual boot). And no, I can't get to BIOS to reset to default, either. So I can basically do nothing else than going online with this thing and that's not enough for me (gamer in withdrawal, yikes!). I need at least to get to my firefox profile on the external hd and be able to watch video. Can somebody please help me? I think at this point I'd prefer to install XP and MAYBE the SuSE 11.3 after that. I'm not a native speaker, so please speak plainly, thanks. :) Edit: if this is impossible, could someone please help me with the external hd mount and video playback?   • Installation taking a very long time, hangs at "Configuring bcmwl-kernel-source"

    I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Configuring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time. After 40 hours the installation was still in configuring mode with the following messages: ubuntu CRON[29329]: (root) CMD ( cd/ && run-part .. report /etc/cron-hourly) I did the following to check for errors: pressed ctrl-alt-f2. This time the system froze. I had no other choice but to turn off the laptop, and start all over again. The exact model of the laptop is "Compaq Presario V2069CL Notebook PC" with AMD processor.
