  • Unix Permissions issue with users belonging to the same group accessing a folder

    - by TK Kocheran
I have a folder I'd really like to allow another user on this machine access to. I'm using mt-daapd to serve music to the network, so I'd like to enable the mt-daapd user to access my Music directory, /home/rfkrocktk/Music. The master user is rfkrocktk obviously. I've tried to set all of my permissions properly on the directory, but the mt-daapd user can't acces the files. I created a group called media-users and added both rfkrocktk and mt-daapd to it in order to give mt-daapd permission to simply read all of the files in that directory and subdirectories. If I run id on each of my users, here's what's displayed: $ id rfkrocktk > uid=1000(rfkrocktk) gid=1000(rfkrocktk) groups=1000(rfkrocktk),4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),29(audio),46(plugdev),104(lpadmin),115(admin),120(sambashare),124(vboxusers),1001(jupiter),2002(media-users) $ id mt-daapd > uid=123(mt-daapd) gid=65534(nogroup) groups=65534(nogroup),2002(media-users) It definitely seems that both users are a part of the media-users group, so what could be going wrong? If I run ls -l on the actual Music directory to see its permissions, here's the output: drwxr-Sr-- 201 rfkrocktk media-users 12288 2011-01-13 12:26 Music If I run ls -l on the Music directory to get its children, here's the output: drwxr-Sr-- 3 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2010-12-20 15:31 2DBoy drwxr-Sr-- 3 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2010-05-25 12:50 ABBA drwxr-Sr-- 3 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2009-12-28 15:19 Access Denied drwxr-Sr-- 10 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2009-12-28 15:19 AC-DC drwxr-Sr-- 3 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2009-12-28 15:19 Aerosmith drwxr-Sr-- 3 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2010-06-04 10:45 A Flock of Seagulls drwxr-Sr-- 4 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2010-05-28 18:13 Alestorm drwxr-Sr-- 3 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2010-06-22 23:29 Amon Amarth drwxr-Sr-- 5 rfkrocktk media-users 4096 2009-12-28 15:19 Anberlin ... From this, it would seem that I should be able to access the folders from mt-daapd, but I can't. Running sudo -i -u mt-daapd ls -l /home/rfkrocktk/Music displays nothing, indicating to me that for whatever reason, mt-daapd doesn't have access to read the folder. What am I doing wrong?

  • Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible

    - by TK Kocheran
I can't seem to get a symlink working in my Apache VirtualHost, no matter what I try and I see the following error in the error log: Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /var/www/carddesigner I can browse the actual symlink from Linux with no problems whatsoever: $ ls -l /var/www | grep "carddesigner" lrwxrwxrwx 1 rfkrocktk rfkrocktk 64 2011-02-28 16:52 carddesigner -> /home/rfkrocktk/Documents/Projects/Work/carddesigner/build/main/ Additionally, I've made sure that the my VirtualHost allows the FollowSymLinks option: /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-localhost: <VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80> ServerAdmin ########## DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ <Directory "/usr/lib/cgi-bin"> AllowOverride None Options +ExecCGI -MultiViews +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch Order allow, deny Deny from all </Directory> ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error.log # Possible values include: debug, info, notice, warn, error, crit, # alert, emerg. Any ideas? Here are my permissions on the actual referenced files: $ ls -l ~/Documents/Projects/Work/carddesigner/build/main total 12 drwxrwxrwx 5 rfkrocktk rfkrocktk 4096 2011-02-28 16:11 advanced drwxrwxrwx 2 rfkrocktk rfkrocktk 4096 2011-02-28 16:10 core drwxrwxrwx 2 rfkrocktk rfkrocktk 4096 2011-02-28 16:10 simple Seems like the permissions are good to go, right?

  • Unix Permissions: Enable access to files no matter the user?

    - by TK Kocheran
I've been using Linux for a long time and I still am completely in the dark about how file permissions really work. With that in mind, does anyone have any books or thorough guides I could read to really understand things completely? I've done my fair share of sysadminning, so I know the easy stuff like making directories readable and writable, making files executable, and changing the owner of a file, but on sharing files across users, I'm lost. Here's my main problem. I have a number of machines across which I intend to synchronize my music library. I've been using Unison for a while now and it's a great choice as I can easily run it over SSH on my local network which I just set up. Win-win. Up until this point, I've been synchronizing computers using a 2TB external hard drive. (computer 1 unisons to HD, computer 2 unisons to HD, etc.) This is tedious at best, especially since I encrypted the drive, making it a huge hassle to hook it up to all of my machines and sync it. Anyway, the drive is running ext4 (in TrueCrypt), so it maintains all Unix filesystem info like owners and groups. I just set up a new machine and just Unison'd it to get the music on it, and I realized that now, all of my permissions are fubar. I had to run Unison as root since that was the only way I could get the files to come off of the external drive. Apparently, since I'm using a different user name on this machine than my usual "rfkrocktk" across all machines, this essentially throws a huge wrench in the gears. Here's my use case. This laptop has two effective users, "leandra" and "rfkrocktk". I want to share music between these two users, so I symlinked /home/rfkrocktk/Music to point to /home/leandra/Music. How do I (a) allow both users access to read/write/delete files in this folder, and (b) keep everything nicely in sync without messing up file ownership?

  • Simple CSS Scale-Nine Layout

    - by rfkrocktk
After all these years, I still haven't learned CSS layout, so bear with me. I'm trying to create a container with rounded corners that I generated in Photoshop. The background of the container is white, so I have eight images: top-left-corner, top, top-right-corner, right, bottom-right-corner, bottom, bottom-left-corner, and left. The edges have a drop shadow around them so yes, I do need 8 sides. How would I lay this out in CSS? I tried and failed miserably to do it with a table + CSS. How would I do it using divs?

  • Ant Copy Task: Failed to copy due to java.io.FileNotFoundException

    - by rfkrocktk
I'm trying to compile a Flex application in Ant (no problems here, I can do it fine). When I try to publish the contents of the project to a Windows network drive (known as "Z:\" on my system), I get the following LAME exception thrown by Java/Ant: BUILD FAILED C:\workspace\bkeller\build.xml:42: Failed to copy C:\workspace\bkeller\web\assets\text\biography.html to Z:\web\bkeller\assets\text\biography.html due to java.io.FileNotFoundException Z:\web\bkeller\assets\text\biography.html (The system cannot find the file specified) Which kind of sucks. I can't find any way to get rid of this problem and it's pretty crucial to my project that I get this working. I know for sure that I have read/write/execute permissions on the network drive, I can create/edit/delete files on the drive just fine through Windows explorer. Drive Z is a network mount to virtualbox, allowing me to get access to my host OS, Ubuntu. I've double checked that it has write permissions. Any ideas?

  • pysqlite2: ProgrammingError - You must not use 8-bit bytestrings

    - by rfkrocktk
I'm currently persisting filenames in a sqlite database for my own purposes. Whenever I try to insert a file that has a special character (like é etc.), it throws the following error: pysqlite2.dbapi2.ProgrammingError: You must not use 8-bit bytestrings unless you use a text_factory that can interpret 8-bit bytestrings (like text_factory = str). It is highly recommended that you instead just switch your application to Unicode strings. When I do "switch my application over to Unicode strings" by wrapping the value sent to pysqlite with the unicode method like: unicode(filename), it throws this error: UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 66: ordinal not in range(128) Is there something I can do to get rid of this? Modifying all of my files to conform isn't an option.

  • How to create Fibonacci Sequence in Java

    - by rfkrocktk
I really suck at math. I mean, I REALLY suck at math. I'm trying to make a simple fibonacci sequence class for an algorithm I'll be using. I have seen the python example which looks something like this: a = 0 b = 1 while b < 10: print b a, b = b, b+a The problem is that I can't really make this work in any other language. I'd like to make it work in Java, since I can pretty much translate it into the other languages I use from there. This is the general thought: public class FibonacciAlgorithm { private Integer a = 0; private Integer b = 1; public FibonacciAlgorithm() { } public Integer increment() { a = b; b = a + b; return value; } public Integer getValue() { return b; } } All that I end up with is doubling, which I could do with multiplication :( Can anyone help me out? Math pwns me.

  • Docbook+Ant: Could not find variable with the name of fop.extensions

    - by rfkrocktk
After a lot of spent time trying to get my article to compile in Ant with Docbook, I can't seem to make FO compilation work. I'm using Xalan 2.7.0, and everything else (both single-page and chunked HTML) compiles perfectly. It's only when I try to compile to FO that I get this error: Fatal Error! org.apache.xml.utils.WrappedRuntimeException: Could not find variable with the name of fop.extensions Cause: org.apache.xml.utils.WrappedRuntimeException: Could not find variable with the name of fop.extensions This is pretty strange and I can't seem to resolve it. I even added a <param> value defining the variable it "can't find:" <xslt style="docbook-xsl/fo/fo.xsl" in="documents/book.xml" out="output.fo"> <classpath> <fileset dir="lib" includes="**/*"/> </classpath> <param name="fop.extensions" expression="1"/> </xslt> Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue? It's really weird if you ask me. (Again, using the same code as above, all of my other Docbook compilation works just fine)

  • Python: Define Classes in Packages

    - by rfkrocktk
I'm learning Python and I have been playing around with packages. I wanted to know the best way to define classes in packages. It seems that the only way to define classes in a package is to define them in init.py of that package. Coming from Java, I'd kind of like to define individual files for my classes. Is this a recommended practice? I'd like to have my directory look somewhat like this: recursor/ __init__.py RecursionException.py RecursionResult.py Recursor.py So I could refer to my classes as "recursor.Recursor," "recursor.RecursionException," and "recursor.RecursionResult.py". Is this "do-able" or recommended in Python?

  • Ant + JUnit = ClassNotFoundExceptions when running tests?

    - by rfkrocktk
    I'm trying to run some tests in Ant presently using JUnit, and all of my tests are failing with the following stacktrace: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mypackage.MyTestCase It doesn't make too much sense to me. I'm first compiling my test cases using <javac>, then directly running the <junit> task to run the tests. My buildfile looks like this: <target name="compile.webapp.tests"> <javac srcdir="${test.java.src.dir}" destdir="${test.java.bin.dir}"> <classpath> <filelist> <file name="${red5.home}/red5.jar"/> <file name="${red5.home}/boot.jar"/> <file name="${bin.dir}/${ant.project.name}.jar"/> </filelist> <fileset dir="${red5.lib.dir}" includes="**/*"/> <fileset dir="${main.java.lib.dir}" includes="**/*"/> <fileset dir="${test.java.lib.dir}" includes="**/*"/> </classpath> </javac> </target> <target name="run.webapp.tests"> <junit printsummary="true"> <classpath> <filelist> <file name="${red5.home}/red5.jar"/> <file name="${red5.home}/boot.jar"/> <file name="${bin.dir}/${ant.project.name}.jar"/> </filelist> <fileset dir="${red5.lib.dir}" includes="**/*.jar"/> <fileset dir="${main.java.lib.dir}" includes="**/*.jar"/> <fileset dir="${test.java.lib.dir}" includes="**/*.jar"/> </classpath> <formatter type="xml"/> <batchtest todir="${test.java.output.dir}"> <fileset dir="${test.java.bin.dir}" includes="**/*TestCase*"/> </batchtest> </junit> </target> This is really weird, I can't seem to fix this. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

  • Can't get simple Apache VHost up and running

    - by TK Kocheran
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a simple Apache VHost online. I used to simply have one VHost which bound to all: <VirtualHost *:80>, but this isn't appropriate for security anymore. I need to have one VHost for localhost requests (ie my dev server) and one for incoming requests via my domain name. Here's my new VHost: NameVirtualHost domain1.com <VirtualHost domain1.com:80> DocumentRoot /var/www ServerName domain1.com </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost domain2.com:80> DocumentRoot /var/www ServerName domain2.com </VirtualHost> After I restart my server, I see the following errors in my log: [Wed Feb 16 11:26:36 2011] [error] [client ####.###.###.###] File does not exist: /htdocs [Wed Feb 16 11:26:36 2011] [error] [client ####.###.###.###] File does not exist: /htdocs What am I doing wrong? EDIT As per the answer give below, I have modified my configuration. Here are my configuration files: /etc/apache2/ports.conf: Listen 80 <IfModule mod_ssl.c> # If you add NameVirtualHost *:443 here, you will also have to change # the VirtualHost statement in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default-ssl # to <VirtualHost *:443> # Server Name Indication for SSL named virtual hosts is currently not # supported by MSIE on Windows XP. It contains the # configuration directives that give the server its instructions. # See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/ for detailed information about # the directives. # # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure # consult the online docs. You have been warned. # # The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections: # 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a # whole (the 'global environment'). # 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server, # which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host. # These directives also provide default values for the settings # of all virtual hosts. # 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to # different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the # same Apache server process. # # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/apache2/foo.log" # with ServerRoot set to "" will be interpreted by the # server as "//var/log/apache2/foo.log". # ### Section 1: Global Environment # # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache, # such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it # can find its configuration files. # # # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's # configuration, error, and log files are kept. # # NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network) # mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available # at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>); # you will save yourself a lot of trouble. # # Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path. # ServerRoot "/etc/apache2" # # The accept serialization lock file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK. # #<IfModule !mpm_winnt.c> #<IfModule !mpm_netware.c> LockFile /var/lock/apache2/accept.lock #</IfModule> #</IfModule> # # PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process # identification number when it starts. # This needs to be set in /etc/apache2/envvars # PidFile ${APACHE_PID_FILE} # # Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out. # Timeout 300 # # KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than # one request per connection).
