• PostgreSQL 8.4 won't start after blackout

  I have problem with starting PostgreSQL 8.4 on Ubuntu 9.10 Server after blackout. When I try to connect to the database it says: psql: server closed the connection unexpectedly This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request. When I try to start it by using command sudo -u postgres /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start * Starting PostgreSQL 8.4 database server [ OK ] Netstat output netstat -tulp (No info could be read for "-p": geteuid()=1000 but you should be root.) • Which containers / graphics components to use in a simple Java Swing game?

  I'm creating a simple labyrinth game with Java + Swing. The game draws a randomized labyrinth on the screen, places a figure in the middle, and the player is then supposed to find the way out by moving the figure with arrow-keys. As for now, I'm using a plain background and drawing the walls of the labyrinth with Graphics.drawLine(). I have a custom picture of the figure in a .gif file, which I load as a BufferedImage object. However, I want the player to see only part of the labyrinth at a time, and the screen should follow the figure in the game, as the player moves around. I'm planning to do this by creating an Image object of the whole labyrinth when it is created, and then "cutting" a square around the current position of the figure and displaying this with Graphics.drawImage(). I'm new with Swing though, and I can't figure out how to draw the figure at different positions "above" the labyrinth without redrawing the whole thing. Which container/component should I use for the labyrinth and then for the figure to achieve this?

• How to read in a negative double with scanf() in C

  I'm learning basics of C and writing a simple first order equation solver. I want the input to be exactly ax+b=c or ax-b=c, where a, b, c are double type. I'm employing scanf() to read in user input and to check if it's of the correct form. However, if I enter a negative double, -4.6 say, as the "a" in the equation, scanf() won't read the a,b,c correctly. I'm using %lf inside scanf(). How do I read a negative double, then? Many thanks. My code: if (scanf("%lfx+%lf=%lf", &a, &b, &c)) more code If I use as the input "-6.2x+3.4=-5.9", the value 3.4 will be assinged to variable a, while b and c remain as they were and "more code" is run.

• Drawing multiple lines with Java Swing

  I'm learning drawing lines with Java Swing in order to draw a labyrinth. I can draw one line at a specified position and it shows just fine. But when I want to draw multiple lines, only the last one shows. My code: public class LabyrinthGUI extends JFrame { ... Line line1 = new Line(0, 0, 0, 50); this.getContentPane().add(line1); } public class Line extends JPanel{ private int x1, y1, x2, y2; public Line(int x1, int y1, int x2, int y2) { this.x1 = x1; this.y1 = y1; this.x2 = x2; this.y2 = y2; } public void paintComponent (Graphics g) { g.drawLine(x1, y1, x2, y2); } I probably have to refresh something, to display all the lines drawn with for-loop, but don't know what.
