  • Updating RubyGems alongside an existing packaged installation on Joyent

    - by Matt
    On a Joyent accelerator I'm working with, Ruby and Rubygems were installed when the server was initially setup using Cool Stack. The existing version of Rubygems is version 0.9.2. When it comes to upgrading RubyGems using the 'sudo gem install rubygems-update' and 'sudo update_rubygems' commands, it results in the following error: ./lib/rubygems.rb:124: uninitialized constant Gem::RbConfig (NameError) from setup.rb:24:in `require' from setup.rb:24 Without having much success in rectifying this issue, I wanted to install a fresh version of RubyGems alongside this one. As this is a production server, I want to minimize the amount of environment changes I make on the server. If I install a fresh version of RubyGems from source, how do I set this new installed version of RubyGems as the default version of RubyGems to use?

  • json_pure/rubygems cyclic dependencies

    - by andrewmcdonough
    I have an issue when trying to set up rvm, where gems weren't installing due to them being dependent on json_pure. I tried to install json_pure, but rubygems itself seems to depend on json_pure. I have tried removing all versions of json_pure, but rubygems still complains. $ sudo gem install json_pure /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems.rb:777:in `report_activate_error': Could not find RubyGem json_pure (= 0) (Gem::LoadError) I have tried downloading the gem and installing it locally, but rubygems still complains about the dependency.

  • Rubygems on Debian: Gems won't load (LoadError)

    - by daswerth
    I've installed the development version of Crunchbang, a linux distro based off Debian. I got Ruby and Rubygems installed, but I can't get the gems I've installed to load. Here is a command-line session: $ ruby -v ruby 1.9.1p378 (2010-01-10 revision 26273) [i486-linux] $ gem env RubyGems Environment: - RUBYGEMS VERSION: 1.3.6 - RUBY VERSION: 1.9.1 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 378) [i486-linux] - INSTALLATION DIRECTORY: /usr/lib/ruby1.9.1/gems/1.9.1 - RUBY EXECUTABLE: /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 - EXECUTABLE DIRECTORY: /usr/bin - RUBYGEMS PLATFORMS: - ruby - x86-linux - GEM PATHS: - /usr/lib/ruby1.9.1/gems/1.9.1 - /home/corey/.gem/ruby/1.9.1 - GEM CONFIGURATION: - :update_sources => true - :verbose => true - :benchmark => false - :backtrace => false - :bulk_threshold => 1000 - REMOTE SOURCES: - http://rubygems.org/ $ echo $PATH /home/corey/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games:/home/corey/.gem/ruby/1.9.1:/usr/lib/ruby1.9.1/gems/1.9.1 $ gem list -d nokogiri `*** LOCAL GEMS ***` nokogiri (1.4.1) Authors: Aaron Patterson, Mike Dalessio Rubyforge: http://rubyforge.org/projects/nokogiri Homepage: http://nokogiri.org Installed at: /usr/lib/ruby1.9.1/gems/1.9.1 Nokogiri (?) is an HTML, XML, SAX, and Reader parser $ ruby -r rubygems -e "require 'nokogiri'" -e:1:in `require': no such file to load -- nokogiri (LoadError) from -e:1:in `' I've encountered similar problems on Ubuntu before, but they were easy to fix. I hope this question is relevant. :)

  • RubyGems installation errors both when using 'sudo' and not using sudo

    - by Kenny Peng
    I have a machine that is running Ubuntu Hardy, which provides its own RubyGems package. Unfortunately that version of RubyGems (1.1.1) is too old to do anything useful with, so I decided to manually update RubyGems to the current version (1.3.6). That part went smoothly, and if I do gem -v, I get 1.3.6 which is expected. The problem is when I try to do: sudo gem install rack, it returns this error: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Errno::EACCES) Permission denied - /home/username/.gem Usually when I install gems as root, it knows to install it into /usr/lib/ruby/gems, so why is it checking my home directory at all? Another quirk is when I do gem install rack (not as root), it says: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError) You don't have write permissions into the /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 directory. which is where I want it to go. I've already tried clearing source_caches, trying different versions of RubyGems (1.3.5), forcing installation into /usr/lib with -i to no avail. Any ideas on why RubyGems is so insistent on checking my /home directory when installing as root?

  • Changing RubyGems Install Path

    - by kmurph79
    I'm using RVM. I recently updated RubyGems and it seems to have changed my install path. Currently RubyGems looks in /Users/kmurph79/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p376 for gems, yet installs them in /Users/kmurph79/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p376/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems. Currently I have them all symlinked, but I'd like to avoid doing that everytime I install a gem. I tried editing .gemrc to have RubyGems look in the latter directory, but that didn't work (maybe I didn't do that correctly? Here is my current .gemrc file). Ideally I'd like to change the install path to the former directory -- is there an easy way to do this? Thanks for any help!

    I have seen many samples of Ruby code with this line (for example, http://www.sinatrarb.com/). What is purpose of this require? # require 'rubygems' require 'sinatra' get '/hi' do "Hello world!" end In all cases the code works without this line.

  • Installing The ruby-gmail rubygem on Mac OS Snow Leopard

    - by johnnygoodman
    I'm working off these instructions: http://github.com/dcparker/ruby-gmail From the home directory I do a standard install and good stuff happens: Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ sudo gem install ruby-gmail Successfully installed ruby-gmail-0.2.1 1 gem installed Installing ri documentation for ruby-gmail-0.2.1... Installing RDoc documentation for ruby-gmail-0.2.1... I head over to my ~/www dir where I run scripts that include other rubygems successfully and create a gmail directory. I create a script that includes rubygems and gmail, but does nothing else: Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ pwd /Users/johnnygoodman/www/gmail Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ ls test-send.rb Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ cat test-send.rb require 'rubygems' require 'gmail' I run this script and the errors begin: Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ ruby test-send.rb /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require': no such file to load -- mime/message (LoadError) from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/ruby-gmail-0.2.1/lib/gmail/message.rb:1 from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/ruby-gmail-0.2.1/lib/gmail.rb:168 from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `gem_original_require' from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from test-send.rb:2 Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ Here's my gem env: Johnny-Goodmans-MacBook-Pro:gmail johnnygoodman$ gem environment RubyGems Environment: - RUBYGEMS VERSION: 1.3.7 - RUBY VERSION: 1.8.7 (2009-06-08 patchlevel 173) [universal-darwin10.0] - INSTALLATION DIRECTORY: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8 - RUBY EXECUTABLE: /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby - EXECUTABLE DIRECTORY: /usr/bin - RUBYGEMS PLATFORMS: - ruby - universal-darwin-10 - GEM PATHS: - /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8 - /Users/johnnygoodman/.gem/ruby/1.8 - /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 - GEM CONFIGURATION: - :update_sources => true - :verbose => true - :benchmark => false - :backtrace => false - :bulk_threshold => 1000 - :sources => ["http://rubygems.org/", "http://gems.github.com"] - REMOTE SOURCES: - http://rubygems.org/ - http://gems.github.com The path that the errors give when I run the script is not the same as the GEM PATHS given in the env output.   • no such file to load -- rubygems (LoadError)

    - by Vineeth
    Hello, I recently installed rails in fedora 12. I'm new to linux as well. Everything works fine on Windows 7. But I'm facing lot of problems in linux. Help please! I've installed all the essentials to my knowledge to get the basic script/server up and running. I have this error from boot.rb popping up when I try script/server. Some of the details I'd like to give here: The directories where rails, ruby and gem are installed, [vineeth@localhost my_app]$ which ruby /usr/local/bin/ruby [vineeth@localhost my_app]$ which rails /usr/bin/rails [vineeth@localhost my_app]$ which gem /usr/bin/gem And when I run the script/server, this is the error. [vineeth@localhost my_app]$ script/server ./script/../config/boot.rb:9:in `require': no such file to load -- rubygems (LoadError) from ./script/../config/boot.rb:9 from script/server:2:in `require' from script/server:2 And the PATH file looks like this [vineeth@localhost my_app]$ cat ~/.bash_profile # .bash_profile # Get the aliases and functions if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then . ~/.bashrc fi # User specific environment and startup programs PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin/ruby:$PATH" I suppose it is something to do with the PATH file. Let me know what I need to change here. If there are other changes I should make, please let me know, Thanks
