  Possible Duplicate: How do I get rid of “U3 System” on my USB drive? SanDisk Cruzer come with a "U3" malware built into them. Its intended for windows, but on Ubuntu it shows up as a "U3 System" CD on the desktop and as /dev/scd1 -> sr1 My question - How do I permanently delete this from the device without windows? I'm aware of the windows program, but I don't have access to any, and in any event, I wouldn't want to insert the stick into a windows box because it automatically installs its malware to any windows box comes into contact with! A friend of mine realized you could delete the cdrom via sudo echo "1" > /sys/class/block/srXXX/device/delete But it will come back if you reboot.

Reason I wanted to reformat it is because it just suddenly stopped working when I was transferring files from my pc and also it erased every content that was saved in the usb drive. I tried various tutorials on the net regarding this however I can't find a solution on how to make a usb drive change its read-only property to read-write or anything that would enable me to reformat this usb drive. I have also checked this link format read-only USB drive but this one doesn't have a solution. Also am attempting to do this on Ubuntu 12.04.

I removed U3 software I used diskpart.exe to "activate" my partition yet when I restart my computer and select to boot off of USB it won't boot, my computer freezes and nothing is happening after that. any ideas what am I doing wrong?

• Dying SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo

  I have a Memory Stick Pro Duo and after attempting to delete the largest file from a Mac the stick has become unusable. I can almost access it. When I put it in my PC I can open/delete/copy/paste/rename/modify one file/folder, then it can't detect the card. If I reinsert the card I can move on to the next file, but this is really annoying and my PSP won't read it at all. The memory card access light will flash for a really long time before it says that every file is corrupted. When I have tried to format it with either the PC, PSP, or a camera that uses a memory stick pro duo, it fails. I've tried with all the different options on windows, I tried formatting it through CMD, but nothing I have tried works. Should I copy every file off one by one or is there a way to fix it?

• How to make my SanDisk Cruzer Blade 4GB disk back to normal?

  Currently, my SanDisk Cruzer Blade 4GB have become a 64MB Firebird RAW flash drive (thumb drive). I don't know why it become like this but when I plug it into a PC, it suddenly transform itself to become a 64MB flash drive. (From 4 GB to 64 MB, that is a huge change!) Some of their solution is as follows: Using the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=1970), which did not work for me as it could not format. Using the h2testw to see if it is genuine, which did not work for me because it is a RAW partition. Return to the vendor, which I doubt since the product only have 1 year warranty and it has expired. I also notice that the flash drive is very fragile as after a few use, the flash drive have become something like the following: (The upper cover of the USB connector was broken or torn) So, wondering if someone have any good solution to fix it back so that at least I can retrieve my data on the fragile thumb drive.

  I bought the SanDisk ReadyCache 32GB SSD drive this week. I didn't know about the caching stuff and thought that I would be able to install Windows 8 on it. Now I'm using it as a cache drive with the ExpressCache software. But I wonder if it is possible to use this SSD as a primary system drive with an operating system installed on it. I've tried to format the disk via Windows Disc Manager Tool, but the format option is disabled. Only delete and information options are allowed. Can you help me with this?

  I've downloaded "ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64" and used Pen Drive Linux to get it onto my USB. I then restarted my computer (a Windows 7 Home Premium edition) and entered the boot menu to have it boot from the Sandisk USB (it called it Sandisk Cruzer Cruzer). Linux came up and asked if I wanted to try or install. I picked install, connected to my Wi-Fi, and installed it. After my laptop restarted, Windows booted immediately. I have tried several times and cannot get a choice between the two. P.S. I have used the Windows Installer, Wubi, but at the last second it gave me some kind of error.

• Accidentally deleted my windows 7 while installing ubuntu, trying to reinstall it

  I had Windows 7 Ultimate on my desktop and I believe have downloaded the correct ISO file. I've been trying to use GParted and UNetbootin to create a bootable usb by formatting to FAT32, flagging the boot box, and writing to the flash drive with UNetbootin, but there have been problems. When I select my flash drive in the BIOS, it just reflashes the BIOS stock MSI picture 4 times then boots to Ubuntu anyway. Details: it's a new computer, self-built, hasn't shown any problems in the past, got Windows 7 through r/softwareswap so it's a MSDN file, the flash drive is a Sandisk U3 Cruzer, I uninstalled the bloatware when Iwas using Windows 7, but in the BIOS it still comes up as "Sandisk U3 Cruzer" I don't have a cCD/DVD drive. I dont care if I have to completely delete ubuntu in the process, I just need Windows 7 back by monday. I think the problem is because of the cruzer and am going to pick up a different flash drive today.

  I'm trying to understand what an MBR is. I know it is used to boot the device, like a compact flash card. If you had five 1GB CF card from SanDisk for a camera, would there be any reason for the manufacturer to have different MBRs? It seems like to me, if for some reason one CF card wouldn't boot, you could copy the MBR from a working CF card and write it to the non-working CF card. Would this MBR for a SanDisk card work on the same size Western Digital card for the same use? Thanks!

  I cannot figure out where to install the boot loader on my Zenbook UX31A Prime. I have installed Ubuntu many times on normal hard drives, but this is the first SSD and I am struggling. Installation type: Something Else Created partition /sda5 mount as /, /sda6 mount as /home, /sda7 mount as swap Selected /dev/sda for boot loader installation. • Copy to USB memory stick really slow?

  When I copy files to the USB device, it takes much longer than in windows (same usb device, same port) it's faster than USB 1.0 speeds (1MB/s) but much slower than USB 2.0 speeds (12MB/s). To copy 1.8GB takes me over 10 minutes (it should be < 3 min.) I have two identical SanDisk Cruzer 8GB sticks, and I have the same problem with both. I have a super talent 32GB USB SSD in the neighboring port and it works at expected speeds. The problem I seem to see in the GUI is that the progress bar goes to 90% almost instantly, completes to 100% a little slower and then hangs there for 10 minutes. Interrupting the copy at this point seems to result in corruption at the tail end of the file. If I wait for it to complete the copy is successful.   My Lenovo x100e laptop has a "4-in-1" card reader that's supposed to handle SD/SDHC, MMC, Memory Stick and MS Pro, but I can't insert my SDHC card (a "SANDISK SECURE DIGITAL EXTREME SDHC 16GB 30MB/S"). It enters a bit and looks lite it will fit, but then it doesn't get any further in (and yes, I've tried to turn it around). It really doesn't move, and I'm afraid to break something if I push harder. • Practically expected transfer rates for sdhc class 6

  I went and bought an expensive SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 8GB class 6 chip. However when I dump data from the card to the machine via USB 2.0 cable, its only getting 5.0 MB/second maximum according to Windows 7 disk explorer. It still can take up to 20 minutes to dump the card when its near full. This is so far below the rated 20MB/s transfer speed I can't believe it. Is this normal or might I have a defective chip?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Samsung ultrabook via a usb stick. I've tried 12.04 both regular and alternate on 3 different USB sticks but not having success. The laptop just keeps booting into windows. I used unetbootin to create the USB image as this worked for when when doing a toshiba ultrabook installation. I reset my Boot Menu to be 1 USB HDD 2 USB CD 3 USB FDD 4 SATA HDD SanDisk SSD u100 128GB Then F10'd but no success, still boots windows. I've tried changing UEFI boot support to be enabled and I've tried changing PXE OPROM to be enabled but neither has helped.

  I'm installing Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit) from a bootable USB stick. At first I had trouble with a black screen after selecting 'install ubuntu'. I added nomodeset and xforcevesa to the options to fix that problem. Now when installing, it hangs at 'Configuring Hardware', specifically at ubuntu ubiquity: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic Specs: Asus UX32a DB51 Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz 4GB DDR3 RAM intel hd 4000 graphics 500 GB harddrive with 25 GB sandisk ssd I'm trying to install Ubuntu by itself right now on the SSD. I made custom partitions (100 mb EFI boot partition, 4GB swap space, 20GB ext4 mounted on '/') I've tried re-downloading the ubuntu iso and creating a new boot image on my flash drive and it results in the same problem.   USB 3.0 SuperTalent Express DUO 8GB recently had its partition corrupted and declared itself "write-protected" and I was told in chat by @sidran32 that this usually means that flash drive gone bad due to writing cycles limit being reached. Having this thumbdrive for over a year being used infrequently, I was in doubt and referred to SuperTalent's support. I was given recovery tool which I executed but it failed first time prompting me to reinsert it. After that, I formatted it with Windows 7 integrated format utility since recovery tool offered to do this as well which was successful. The problem as I have noticed is with integrity of SuperTalent: Compare above to SanDisk's Micro Cruzer 8GB: Am I missing something? Both thumbdrives are of 8GB and have same FAT32 file system.

I cannot dualboot it with windows until my friend (who is a genius at computers) backs up my windows (apparently). • "Windows was unable to complete the format" - Can't format flashdrive!!!

  I have a 8GB Sandisk Cruzer USB flash drive that I had ruined a while back trying to make it bootable. Anyway now when I click on it I get a message that it needs to be reformatted to be used. So when I try to do that, the formatting starts and suddenly ends with the message "Windows was unable to complete the format". This happens no matter which file system I choose (NTFS, FAT32, exFat) and also which computer I try this on. I am now on a Windows 7 32 bit OS and before tries it on a Vista Home Basic machine. Anyone know any way around this issue? Many thanks.
