• Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager can't read config sections containing encrypted passwords

  I have some sites in IIS7 that are configured to run as domain users (MYDOMAIN\someuser). I'm using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace to scan my server configuration, but it's throwing an exception when I hit one of these "impersonator" sites: using (ServerManager sm = new ServerManager()) { foreach (Site site in sm.Sites) { foreach (Application app in site.Applications.Reverse()) { foreach (VirtualDirectory vdir in app.VirtualDirectories.Reverse()) { var config = app.GetWebConfiguration(); foreach (var locationPath in config.GetLocationPaths()) { // error occurs in GetLocationPaths() } } } } } The actual error message is: COMException was unhandled Filename: \\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config Line number: 279 Error: Failed to decrypt attribute 'password' because the keyset does not exist It appears that IIS is storing the MYDOMAIN\someuser password encrypted in applicationHost.config, which is great in terms of security - but I have no idea how to get the ServerManager to decrypt this. Any tips on how I can either allow ServerManager to decrypt this, or just tell IIS to store the passwords in plain text? This is on IIS7 under Windows 7 RC, by the way.

  Is ServerManager module available on Windows 7 Ultimate ? I think (but I'm not sure because I never looked at output before) the PS script that I have worked before but after some problems with IIS7 installation it stopped working. Following script import-module servermanager fails with error Import-Module : The specified module 'servermanager' was not loaded because no valid module file was found in any module directory. At line:1 char:14 + import-module <<<< servermanager + CategoryInfo : ResourceUnavailable: (servermanager:String) [Import-Module], FileNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Modules_ModuleNotFound,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.ImportModuleCommand I found recommendation to run Dism.exe /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:ServerManager-PSH-Cmdlets on my machine but it also fails with error Feature name ServerManager-PSH-Cmdlets is unknown.

• server 2008 r2 stuck on installing updates

  I have 2008 r2 64bit server that is stuck on installing updates. It shows message "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing 57 of 61.." This message is shown for 3 hours now. I was trying to connect to this server using mmc. runas /user:AdministratorAccountName@ComputerName "mmc %windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc" RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - mmc C:\Windows\system32\compmgmt.msc 1311: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. What else can I do? Update: Remote Desktop does not work. It just disappear after entering username and password from Win7-64 computer Update: I have disconected server. I use now an app that remembers their position to restore it... Windows Update service dissapeared, along with BITS service, I managed to recover them and installed all updates availables today I'm going nuts looking for information about these errors. Solutions that didn't work: sfc /scannow Doesn't complain about anything All windows updates applied (after recovering missing Windows Update) ServerManager.log: Only one error all the time: Error (Id=0) System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800706D9): No hay más extremos disponibles desde el asignador de extremos.   I installed Oracle SOA Suite 11g. I start the NodeManager successfully. I start the AdminServer successfully.   I have a half dozen sites on my server and I would like to get some info from IIS7 to display in the footer of each page (as long as you are an admin of course). I am going through the ServerObject and found Sites but am not finding anything obvious for "this site". What should I do to get at the information for the exact site in IIS7 that the page is running on?   I am trying to manage an IIS7 installation remotely using the Microsoft.Web.Administration library. I'm doing this in IronPython: import Microsoft.Web.Administration from Microsoft.Web.Administration import ServerManager manager = ServerManager.OpenRemote("RemoteServerName") for site in manager.Sites: print "Site: %(site)s" % { 'site' : site.Name } On the last line as it attempts to communicate with the remote server I get the following error: Retrieving the COM class factory for remote component with CLSID {2B72133B-3F5B-4602-8952-803546CE3344} from machine devdealernetsvr failed due to the following error: 80070005. My research into the error lead me to believe that I do not have the proper credentials against the remote machine and so I would like to impersonate a user that does. I was hard pressed to find a way to do this with IronPython. Any help is much appreciated.

When manipulating Handler Mappings using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace, is there a way to remove the <remove name="handler name"> tag added at the site level. For example, I have a site which inherits all the handler mappings from the global handler mappings configuration.   I've setup a 2 node NLB cluster and used the following to share IIS configs between them. http://blogs.technet.com/b/meamcs/archive/2012/05/30/configuring-iis-7-5-shared-configuration.aspx The IIS configs and content is located on a network share via a UNC path. This works - updating IIS settings on one node, is visible in another node and my website works on the individual nodes and the cluster as whole. I'm able to setup an FTP site and successfully connect with my Windows login. However, I want to use IIS Manager Authentication as defined in: http://www.iis.net/learn/publish/using-the-ftp-service/configure-ftp-with-iis-manager-authentication-in-iis-7 I've tried using "Network Service" with the FTP COM object as well as a dedicated user account that exists on all three hosts, but every time I try to login with an IIS user I get something like the following: IISWMSVC_AUTHENTICATION_UNABLE_TO_READ_CONFIG An unexpected error occurred while retrieving the authentication information. • What permission(s) does an application pool identity required to manage other application pools?

  I have a web site (used to manage various parts of our software) that needs the permissions required to start/stop other application pools. I've created a user and set the app pool identity to custom, however the web app still can't start/stop the app pools. I get the following Error: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Filename: redirection.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Interop.AppHostWritableAdminManager.GetAdminSection(String bstrSectionName, String bstrSectionPath) at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Configuration.GetSectionInternal(ConfigurationSection section, String sectionPath, String locationPath) at Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager.get_ApplicationPoolsSection() at Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager.get_ApplicationPools() Discussion here suggests setting the application pool to local system or administrator, this does work, but I don't want to do this for security reasons (external support will need access this site). I did give the user higher permissions (as suggested here), starting by making it part of the local administrators group, but initially this didn't work, and giving the user read/write/mod permission on C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config also didn't work. I must have done something wrong as local administrator now works, however this still isn't what I want. So can anyone suggest the permissions I need to add to this user, and how can I apply them? An answer my problem (but different question) is here, but to clarify, I think I need to give an individual user "IIS Runtime Operation Permissions", does anyone know how to do this, if indeed this is the permissions I require?

  I have a web site running on IIS7 on a remote server. I would like to do the following: Create a new subfolder under the root virtual directory. Create a new app pool. Add this new app pool to the new subfolder Normally, I would do this manually in IIS by first creating the app pool, and then right-clicking the sub folder an choose "add application", but I need to do this programmatically in C#. I've managed to make the above points 1 and 2 work, but I can't find the way to adding the application to the sub folder. • Simple active directory permissions issue

  So I've created a domain controller (DC) as well as 3 machines (SQL-A, SQL-B, SQL-CORE). All are running Windows Server2008R2 (on virtualbox). I have successfully joined the 3 machines to the domain controller. Next I created a user in active directory called Kim_Akers who is a member of "Domain Admins", "Domain users", "Enterprise Admins" and "Schema Admins". However when I login to SQL-A for example as contso/Kim_Akers and then try and run something like the ServerManager.msc I can't do it due to lack of permissions "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions". What am I doing wrong that Kim_Akers doesn't have permissions to do this? Thanks.
