    As per the title. Calling [[UIDevice currentDevice] BeginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications] has no effect. DidRotateToInterfaceOrientation etc events are working fine, but I need to be able to poll the device orientation arbitrarily. How can I fix/do this? The long story: I have a tab application with a navigation controller on each tab. The root view of tab number one is a graph that goes full screen when the orientation changes to landscape; however this needs to be checked whenever the view appears as the orientation change could have occurred elsewhere, so I was hoping to poll the orientation state whenever this view appears.

    Is there an API for checking at runtime whether you are running on an iPhone or an iPad? One way I can think of would be to use: [[UIDevice currentDevice] model]; And detect the existence of the string @"iPad" - which seems a bit fragile. In the 3.2 SDK, I see that UIDevice also has a property which is really what I'm looking for, but doesn't work for pre-3.2 (obviously): [[UIDevice currentDevice] userInterfaceIdiom]; Are there other ways than checking for the existence of @"iPad" for a universal app?

  • Why can't I retrieve UIDeviceOrientation correctly while playing a movie in MPMoviePlayerController?

    Everything works fine while I'm not playing anything (I'm calling beginnotifications, etc, and using the orientation to rotate my view). But after I start playing with MPMoviePlayerController every time I try a... UIDeviceOrientation orientation = [[UIDevice currentDevice] orientation]; ...orientation gets a UIDeviceOrientationUnknown. Any clue? When the movie stops everything works alright again. I need this orientation to rotate the player's window, because Im using Iphone OS 3.1 so I can't directly use the view property inside MPMovie player controller.

  • Using accelerometer to detect iPad lock switch trigger?

    So for complicated reasons I am managing view rotations myself, and am only implementing UIDeviceOrientationPortrait as the autorotating orientation. Anyway, when one clicks the screen lock on the iPad, the device will rotate to UIDeviceOrientationPortrait, which will cause my code to rotate, which I do not want to happen. For instance of the user is holding the device in "landscape mode", i.e. I have already manually rotated the UI to landscape mode, and he/she clicks the screen lock, it will rotate the UI to portrait mode, even though the user did not move the device at all. So somehow I need a way to differentiate between rotations to portrait mode occuring from the screen lock, and those occuring from device rotation. As such, I would like somehow to use the accelerometer to detect whether or not the device was actually 'rotated' or whether the button was clicked. Thanks!

    I have an iPad app that I would like to make Universal, however this seems alarmingly difficult. I've changed things around so that I support both builds, but when building, I get lots of errors about using UIPopOvers. Here're my questions: Why does UI_USER_INTERFACE_IDIOM() not compile or register on 3.1.3? Can I conditionally have variables in a class definition based on UI_USER_INTERFACE_IDIOM()? If not, should I make two different view controllers? Thanks!

    The reason I need to find out is that on an iPad, a UIPickerView has the same height in landscape orientation as it does in portrait. On an iPhone it is different. The iPad programming guide introduces an "idiom" value to UIDevice: UIDevice* thisDevice = [UIDevice currentDevice]; if(thisDevice.userInterfaceIdiom == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { // iPad } else { // iPhone } which works OK while you're in iPad (3.2) but not iPhone (3.1.3) - so it looks like there also needs to be an ifdef to conditionally compile that check, like: #if __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED >= 30200 UIDevice* thisDevice = [UIDevice currentDevice]; if(thisDevice.userInterfaceIdiom == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { // etc. } #endif To me that's starting to look very clumsy. EDIT: Recently, one of my App rejected due to using one undocumented methods. -[UIDevice setOrientation] Since, selectors are independent from the class you're messaging, even if my custom class defines -setOrientation: irrelevant to UIDevice, there will be a possbility of being rejected.

    Okay, I've got my normal app which is in portrait mode. I can force my app to go to landscape mode for a view (using navigationcontroller and viewcontroller) like this: - (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { [[UIDevice currentDevice] setOrientation:UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight]; } But then when I go back to the main menu (tableview) it goes straight back to portrait. I try this code: - (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { [[UIDevice currentDevice] setOrientation:UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait]; } But that doesn't work.. Any ideas?

  • Building a Universal iPad App - Where is the device recognition code?

    I noticed that when I create a new project in XCode for a Universal iPad/iPhone application, the template comes with two separate App Delegate files, one for each device. I can't seem to locate the place in code where it tries to decide which app delegate to use. I have an existing iPhone project I'd like to port to iPad. My thinking was that if I went ahead and designed the iPad project, I could just import my iPhone classes and nibs, and then use the App Delegate and UIDevice to decide which MainWindow.xib to load. The process went like this: Create an iPad project coded as a split-view create brand new classes and nibs for the iPad import iPhone classes and nibs Change build/target settings in accordance with Universal Apps Use [[UIDevice currentDevice] model] in the AppDelegate to decide which MainWindow to load Will this work, or does the app just automatically know which device it's being deployed on?   • Calling popToRootViewControllerAnimated causing crash. How should I be doing this?

    The app is for taking body measurements. The user can say I want to measure: legs, arms and neck, in the settings tab and in the main tab there is a view which loops round to take each measurement. This is achieved like so: i have tab controller the first tab has a navigation controller the first view controller on the storyboard and has one segue to itself the board loops round until it has all the measurements then it segues to a different controller the problem is: if the user changes which measurements they are taking in the settings tab, the first tab needs to completely reload, as if the app was just starting up, clearing down the whole nav stack etc. at the moment the tab controller calls popToRootViewControllerAnimated on the navigation controller in the measurements tab, but this is causing a crash. Each screen has a slider control and a call to titleForRow:forComponent: is being called on a deleted view causing it to crash. What am I doing wrong?! I've been writing my Universal application in portrait mode, and now after about 15 nib files, many many viewCotnrollers, i'd like to implement the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation and desing some screens in Landscape mode. adding : - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return YES; } to ALL of my viewControllers, does not do the work. During Debug, i see that this method is called, but it just won't work! not in the simulator, not in the device, not in Iphone, not in Ipad! i've searched some answers in the forum, and saw some advises to use: - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait || interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft || interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight || interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown ); } Didn't worked either, adding: [[UIDevice currentDevice] beginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications]; and [[UIDevice currentDevice] endGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications]; to my viewDidLoad and viewDidUnload respectively didn't worked either. I'm lost.. Any help will do! just one more info... all my Views are of type UIControl, as i needed the TuchUpInside to work. Appriciate your help.

  • iPad start in Landscape receive only touch within 768x768

    It works perfect fine when starting in portrait and also works when you rotate from portrait to landscape and back. It does not work when starting in landscape. But then it works when you rotate from landscape to portrait and back. In landscape starting mode, the screen does not respond with any touch where screen coordinateX greater than 768. What happens in code is, I use status bar orientation to determine original orientation and rotate each view manually. The views display correctly but does not receive touch properly. Then my root view controller will get called when ipad start rotating with: - (void)willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration which will rotate every subviews. I have trouble with auto-rotating interfaces in my iPad app. I have a class called Switcher that observes the interface rotation notifications and when it receives one, it switches the view in window, a bit like this: - (void) orientationChanged: (NSNotification*) notice { UIDeviceOrientation newIO = [[UIDevice currentDevice] orientation]; UIViewController *newCtrl = /* something based on newIO */; [currentController.view removeFromSuperview]; // remove the old view [window addSubview newCtrl.view]; [self setCurrentController:newCtrl]; } The problem is that the new view does not auto-rotate. My auto-rotation callback in the controller class looks like this: - (BOOL) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: (UIInterfaceOrientation) io { NSString *modes[] = {@"unknown", @"portrait", @"portrait down", @"landscape left", @"landscape right"}; NSLog(@"shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: %i (%@)", io, modes[io]); return YES; } But no matter how I rotate the device, I find the following in the log: shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: 1 (portrait) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: 1 (portrait) …and the willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:duration: does not get called at all. Now what? The orientation changing is becoming my least favourite part of the iPhone SDK… (I can’t check the code on the device yet, could it be a bug in the simulator?) PS.   • Changing UIViews during UIInterfaceOrientation on iPad

    I am trying to change views on rotation because my views have to be significantly different from portrait to landscape. Now the code I am using works once then the app freezes when trying to rotate back. Either direction does not make a difference. For example: If I am in Landscape and rotate to portrait everything works great until I rotate back to landscape then it freezes and does absolutely nothing.
