• Hard-drive will randomly fail to load GRUB. Booting a live USB/CD fixes the issue temporarily

  I am running 12.04 64-bit and am dual booting with Win7, for full disclosure, although I suspect that has nothing to do with my problem. Occasionally the boot-loader(GRUB) will fail to load and I will be presented with a black screen with a single blinking line. There is no apparent pattern although I suspect there is one and it is related to a program I am running. This has happened to me eight out of ten power cycles now and I can fix it consistently, however, I have no idea why it happens. My current fix is to boot a live CD (I've tried both KNOPPIX and Ubuntu with the same result) and that's it. Somehow booting with the live CD is enough to "wake-up" my hard drive. I then reboot and GRUB magically appears again. So what is going on? Is it possible that a program is corrupting my MBR and the live CD is restoring it? How can I narrow down the possibilities? Thanks. Additional: This is still a problem. I'm convinced now that it is not hardware related as I've spent the last month and several boot cycles on Windows without a hiccup. Recently when I started using Ubuntu again the problem started again. I am more interested in figuring out what is going on rather than actually fixing the problem. Are there any tools, logs, etc. I can use to unravel this mystery?

• How do I know when my on-board ethernet is dead? (Realtek 8112L LAN controller w/ AI NET2 )

  So I have an ASUS P7P55D-E Pro motherboard. It has an on-board Realtek 8112L LAN controller w/ AI NET2. I suspect that my LAN controller is dead but I don't really know for sure. This is what I know thus far: Everything was working, I have a triple booted system and ethernet was functional under Linux, Win7, and OSX. My ethernet is no longer functional under all three of the operating systems. I was experiencing random momentary internet outages before everything finally went dark. I don't know much about the AI NET BIOS tool but I believe it just checks for ethernet problems before you boot into an operating system. In any case, it doesn't find a connection upon boot. I've checked the connection on a couple of other machines and everything worked fine. I think I already know the answer to my question, but are there any other possible explanations, or is it dead?

• latex list environment inside the tabular environment: extra line at top preventing alignment

  Hello good people of stackoverflow. I have a LaTeX question that is bugging me. I have been trying to get a list environment to appear correctly inside the tabular environment. So far I have gotten everything to my liking except one thing: the top of the list does not align with other entries in the table, in fact it looks like it adds one line above the list... I would like to have these lists at the top. • local match kickoff time

  I'm working on a sports website and need to convert the server's match start time to local match start time. After much googling, I figured the fastest and most accurate way is to get the GMT offset value in JavaScript. The trouble is, I can't pass the GMT offset value to PHP. I've tried using both the PHP session and cookie variables, but both are always empty. The website doesn't require a user account, so there isn't any stored GMT value in the database. I'm trying to auto-detect each user's local timezone every time he/she visits the website, and then calculate the local match start time based on the timezone offset. Can someone please advise me? • Change paper size in the middle of a latex document?

  Does anyone know how to change these length parameters in the middle of a latex document? \paperwidth \paperheight I would like to define a page size for a single page (possibly two or three). I tried v5.3 of the geometry package, which just added some new features; like \newgeometry. Unfortunately \newgeometry cannot be used to redefine \paperheight and \paperwidth. Any help would be very appreciated.
