• 'javadoc' look-a-like, using parser generator?

  Hello all, I'm going to create a javadoc look-a-like for the language I'm mainly using, but I was wondering - is it worth to use a parser generator for this? • Dynamic typed language example using ANTLR

  Hey all, I'm looking for some ANTLR examples, I tried googling a bit but I found certain things which didn't fit my requirments. I found the Mantra project, but it's statically typed and is 'too' big for me at this moment, then I found 'pie' as interpreter, which is dynamically typed, which what I want, but it uses a syntax-directed interpreter. I'm looking for a pretty small language which is dynamically typed and uses AST's if possible. It doesn't need to be advanced, if it would have classes I would already be very happy. • Concept of GUI's - Centralized or decentralized

  Hello all, Since a few months I've been learning Erlang, and now it was time to do some basic GUI. After some quick research I saw there was an interesting library called 'wxi' (based on Fudgets of Haskell) which uses a different approach on GUI's. No central loop, every widget processes it's own events and handles it's own data. What do you guys think about this? It looks like it kind of can be efficient in languages such as Erlang, and it's an interesting approach. William van Doorn

• Writing a search engine

  Hello all, The title might be a bit misleading, but I couldn't figure out a better title. I'm writing a simple search engine which will search on several sites for the specific domain. To be concrete: I'm writing a search engine for hardstyle livesets/aftermovies/tracks. To do I will search on the sites who provide livesets, tracks, and such. The problem here is speed, I need to pass the search query to 5-7 sites, get the results and then use my own algorithm to display the results in a sorted order. I could just "multithread" it, but it's easier said then done so I have a few questions. What would be the best solution to this problem? Should I just multithread/process this application, so I'm going to get a bit of speed-up? Are there any other solutions or I am doing something really wrong? Thanks, William van Doorn

• Streaming audio (YouTube)

  Hello all, I'm writing a CLI for a music-media-platform. One of the features is going to be that you can directly play YouTube videos from the CLI. I don't really have an idea to do it but this one sounded the most reasonable: I'm going to use of those sites where you can download music from YouTube, e.g. http://keepvid.com/ - then I directly stream & play this -- but I have one problem. Is there any Python library capable of doing this and if so, do you have any concrete examples? I've been looking but found nothing, even not with gstreamer. Thanks, William van Doorn

• ANTLR - Embedding Java code, evaluate before or after?

  Hello all, I'm writing a simple scripting language on top of Java/JVM, where you can also embed Java code using the {} brackets. The problem is, how do I parse this in the grammar? I have two options: 1] Allow everything to be in it, such as: [a-z|a-Z|0-9|_|$], and go on 2] Get an extra java grammar and use that grammar to parse that small code (is it actually possible and efficient?) Since option 2] is basically a double-check since when evaluating java code it's also being checked. Now my last question is -- is way that can dynamically execute java code also with objects which have been created at runtime? Thanks, William van Doorn

• Video editing language

  Hi folks, My next project will be all about language tools, parsing and such. Because of that reason I've decided to write a simple language which can be used for video editing. So instead of those desktop applications (Sony vegas, Adobe Premiere, ..) it's basically a language where you define the effects and all and it will generate a video for you. Since I've got no experience in this kind of business I need some help. The goal of the project is to create a simple language which is able to do some basic things (such as text fading in, etc). I am looking for articles/projects/blogs/whatever related with this which could help me writing this language. • Twitter4J - Looking up profile details without logging in

I want to be able to search on a name, and when the certain user is on twitter, I want to retrieve basic information such as tweets, followers (like you can access via http) - but how to do is in Twitter4J?   Hello all, I've been thinking of this question very long, but really couldn't find the answer on Google as well a similar question on Stackoverflow. If there is a duplicate, I'm sorry for that. A lot of people seem to say that writing compilers and other language tools in functional languages such as OCaml and Haskell is much more efficient and easier then writing them in imperative languages. Is this true? And if so -- why is so efficient and easy to write them in functional languages instead of in an imperative language, like C? Also -- isn't a language tool in a functional language slower then in some low-level language like C? Thanks in advance, William v. Doorn

• Writing a report

  Hello all, Since some time I've been investigating more time into profiling things better, really think about how to do a thing and why. Now I'm going to start a new project, where I will be writing a report about. The report will be about anything what I wrote in the project, why, and I'll be investigating some things and do particular research about them. I've seen some reports, such as game programming in Haskell using FRP. However, after reading several reports they all seem to be build different. I have a few questions about writing a report: 1] What are the things I really should include, and what are the things I really shouldn't include? 2] Is it useful to include graphs about different methods/approaches to a several problem, where you only included one into your project, to show WHY you didn't include the other methods. Or should I just explain the method/approach used into the project. 3] Should I only be writing the report after I've completed the project, or should I also write pages about what I expect, how I'm going to build the software? • How do I save user specific data in an asp.net site?

  I just set up user profiles using asp.net 3.5 using wvd. For each user I would like to store data that they will be updating every day. For example, every time they go for a run they will update time and distance. I intend to allow them to also look up their history of distance and time from any past date. My question is, what does the database schema usually look like for such a set up? Currently asp.net set up a db for me when I made user profiles. Do I just add an extra table for every user? Should there be one big table with all users data? How do I relate a user I'd to their specific data? Etc.... I have never done this before so any ideas on how this is usually done would be very helpful. Thank you.
