What’s the best way to label cables in a data center

We're in the midst of planning for a big data center renovation at my office, which is going to result in a completely new power and network infrastructure. As part of this, I'd like to label all of our cables properly and sanely.

What are your best practices, both for labeling patch panels, cables, power whips, anything and everything in a data center that you'd label?
