Why did the 3.0.1 iPhone software update brick my 1G iPhone?

The 3.0.1 software update bricked my iPhone and I had to do a hard reset, wipe and reload to recover it.

Has anyone else had their first Gen iPhone bricked by the 3.0.1 software update?

Does anyone have any insight about what causes this update to brick 1G iPhones?
