How can I control wireless networks in Ubuntu without Network-Manager?

Hi there,

I recently installed Ubuntu on a laptop I got. I was having issues with the network manager just like I was having in my VM where it was not setting up the hostname correctly.

Anyhow now I have a problem, since it is a laptop it will be moving.... But I have no way to discover new wireless networks. Anyway I can gain that functionality back?

The problem I am running into is that I need to set the DNS search and domain for the machine so I can access my network but the network-manager was overriding the settings.

Any help would be much appreciated.
