• encfs error while decoding the data

  I have installed encfs and started using it to secure all my personal & office data and it was working absolutely fine until 2 hours back. The setup is like this. I have a folder in Copy folder called OfficeData which gets synchronized with my Copy folder When I login into the system I use the command encfs ~/Copy/OfficeData ~/Documents/OfficeData Once my work is over I dismount with the command fusermount -u ~/Documents/OfficeData All this data get synchronized with my desktop and with my mobile phone (as a backup) Today when I mounted, the folder got mounted by no directories and files present in that folder. I was worried and read man encfs which gave me to run the command encfs -v -f ~/Copy/OfficeData ~/Documents/OfficeData 2> encfs-OfficeData-report.txt. • Copy/paste filtered column in Excel - error message

  Firstly I should state that I don't believe in spreadsheets; my normal mode of operation is that data should either exist in a database or a text file... However - employment requires... In short, I have filtered a worksheet by column A, and I want to copy/paste from column B to column C. Obviously I don't wish to copy/paste values from rows that were filtered-out here. The above sounds ridiculously simple, right? First I tried simply copy/pasting on the filtered worksheet. This appeared to select and copy only the filtered data, however pasting appeared to insert values into hidden/filtered rows - as you might expect. So my initial research suggests I may wish to select the filtered data and press Alt+; (that is, ALT plus semicolon), which is a shortcut key for Goto Special Select Visible. Then just copy-paste. CTRL+C correctly copies the filtered data, however when I go to paste the values into another column, it pastes into hidden rows as well. Okay, so perhaps I should also "Select Visible" on the cells I wish to paste into as well? Nope - that gives me the error That command cannot be used on multiple selections. What am I doing wrong?!

  I am wanting to be able to copy cells in a worksheet and paste them elsewhere in the same worksheet while maintaining the original formatting. I also want to be able to paste into Word and Outlook and keep the same formatting. Everything I have tried discards the the formatting and only pastes unformatted text. Paste Option buttons do not appear even though they have been defined in the setting to appear. Also Format Painter does not seem to do anything at all. Is there a setting that needs to be changed to resolve this?

  Suppose you have this code in a class: private DataContext _context; public Customer[] GetCustomers() { GetContext(); return _context.Customers.ToArray(); } public Order[] GetOrders() { GetContext(); return _context.Customers.ToArray(); } // For the sake of this example, a new DataContext is *required* // for every public method call private void GetContext() { if (_context != null) { _context.Dispose(); } _context = new DataContext(); } This code isn't thread-safe - if two calls to GetOrders/GetCustomers are made at the same time from different threads, they may end up using the same context, or the context could be disposed while being used. Even if this bug didn't exist, however, it still "smells" like bad code. A much better design would be for GetContext to always return a new instance of DataContext and to get rid of the private field, and to dispose of the instance when done. Changing from an inappropriate private field to a local variable feels like a better solution. I've looked over the code smell lists and can't find one that describes this. In the past I've thought of it as temporal coupling, but the Wikipedia description suggests that's not the term: Temporal coupling When two actions are bundled together into one module just because they happen to occur at the same time. This page discusses temporal coupling, but the example is the public API of a class, while my question is about the internal design. Does this smell have a name? Or is it simply "buggy code"?

• Should we enforce code style in our large codebase?

  By "code style" I mean 2 things: Style, eg. // bad if(foo){ ... } // good if (foo) { ... } Conventions and idiomaticity, where two ways of writing the same thing are functionally equivalent, but one is more idiomatic. eg. // bad if (fooLib.equals(a, b)) { ... } // good if (a == b) { ... } I think it makes sense to use an auto-formatter to enforce #1 automatically. So my question is specifically about #2. I like to break things down into pros and cons, here's what I've come up with so far: Pros: Used by many large codebases (eg. Google, jQuery) Helps make it a bit easier to work on new areas of the codebase Helps make code more portable (this is not necessarily true) Code style is automatic once you get used to it Makes it easier to fast-decline pull requests Cons: Takes engineers’ and code reviewers’ time away from more important things (like developing features) Code should ideally be rewritten every 2-3 years anyway, so it’s more important to focus on getting the architecture right, and achieving high test coverage Adds strain to code reviews (eg. “don’t do it this way, I like this other way better”) Even if I’ve been using a code style for a while, I still sometime have to pause and think about how to write a line better Having an enforced, uniform code style makes it hard to experiment with potentially better styles Maintaining a style guide takes a lot of incremental effort Engineers rarely read through the style guide.   With plain google as well as google code search tools it is easy to find how to program using some resource or solve certain problems ( such as a Java class, or a ftp block in perl etc) and so developers are so tempted to just purely copy paste the code (in a way re-use) - is this an incompetency? I have done this myself though I think I am a better programmer than many others I have seen. Who has the time to RTFM? In this age of information abundance, I do not think that copy paste programming is bad. Isn't that what sites like stackoverflow do anyway? People ask - ok here is my problem - how to solve it? now someone will post complete code and the person who asked the question would simply copy paste the most voted answer. No matter how small the problem is. I am working with a bunch of young coders who heavily rely on internet to get their job done. I see convenience (for example, you may be quite good with algorithms and such but you may not know how to use a BufferedReader in Java - would you read complete Javadoc for BufferedReader or look up some example of using it somewhere??) in copy pasting and modifying code to get the job done. What are the real dangers of copy paste coding that can impact their competency?

  Recent update to 13.10 left the middle mouse button turning sound on and off!! How do I get back to being able to copy and paste? Select the text then paste with the middle Wheel mouse button. This is a feature I used to use a lot and I find extremely quick and useful. I know I can use ctrl c, ctrl v, and right click select copy, select paste but this is clunky compared to just being able to click the middle wheel button. Is there a settings menu option to gain correct operation of the middle wheel button?

  I would like to add Copy-Paste Link functionality to an application. The application replaces a complex Excel workbook. I would like to be able to copy tables, text, and charts from the application and use Paste Link in MS Word. For the uninitiated: With Excel, when you use Paste Link for the tables, text, charts, etc. the items update in Word when you change them in Excel. Does anyone know for sure if this is/is not possible (is it some proprietary feature of MS Word-Excel)? • How to copy files from shadow copy with long source path

  The files and folders in my shared network drive (set up with DFS) were mass deleted. Currently I am trying to recover the files from the shadow copy "Previous Version". Problem is, thousands of files are deeply nested with long paths making the file path too long. When copying, it shows the dialog "Source Path Too Long". My guess is that the file path just barely hits the limit when saved into the network drive, but shadaw copy service appends the date and time to the folders so the path character limit is exceeded. How else can I copy the files from shadow copy?

Most of the responses there suggested that, beyond maintenance on the method currently being edited, programmers don't, in general, keep an eye on the rest of the code base. So I thought I'd ask the question in general: Is code maintenance, in general, considered part of your daily work? Do you find that you're spending at least some of your time cleaning up, refactoring, rewriting code in the code base, to improve it, as part of your other assigned work? Is it expected of you/do you expect it of your teammates? Or is it more common to find that cleanup, refactoring, and general maintenance on the codebase as a whole, occurs in bursts (for example, mostly as part of code reviews, or as part of refactoring/cleaning up projects)?

• Java Copy/Paste org.w3c.dom.Node between two running copies of the same program

  I have a program that shows a tree representation of an XML file. Using a number of sources online I have Copy/Paste within a single instance of the program working. I am using the system Clipboard. What I need though is to be able to copy a node from one instance of the program and paste to a different instance of the same program. I have tried a number of different options, all resulting in the same behavior. When pasting from within the same application the clipboardContent contains a "transferable" object with the correct data along with an isLocal set to "true". When I perform the copy and then attempt the paste from another instance of the same program running the clipboardContent contains a "flavorsToData" HashMap and "flavors" values, the check for isDataFlavorSupported fails (never hits my custom class that represents the new flavor). I have tried using different values for the requestor object in the getContents() call. Likewise I have tried a few different ClipboardOwners for the setContent() call. Neither seem to change the behavior in any way. I am sorely tempted to convert the node that is being copied back into a textual XML format, and then on the paste convert back to the DOM model, but would rather not if possible. • Tips on debugging copy and paste into powerpoint 2010

  I have a custom application in C++ that has been used to successfully copy-and-paste an object from the application into MS Office 2003 and 2007 (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). The object opens in our own custom activeX control. Now with windows XP and PowerPoint 2010, nothing happens on the cut-and-paste. I have tried turning off the smart copy/paste to no avail. Copy/paste works with Word and Excel 2010. Do you have tips on how to debug this? Thanks Andrew

• Simple copy to pen-drive - 0x80070057

  Hello guys, I have this problem for a while and still didn't find the answer. I'm copying a specifc 10mb file to my pen-drive, from any folder on PC to any folder on the pen-drive and all i get is this: 0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect I simply cannot copy the file at all!! The pen-drive in case is my Nokia 5800, in "Mass Storage" mode. Sometimes I cannot copy a single MP3 file, 5 or 7mb. So i have to disconnect and connect again. The source file is not corrupted, the destination works fine with other files. It's just with some files. If I change to another pen-drive, works fine.

• Copy files with filter (XP)

  I have a huge folder (over 6GB) with multiple sub-folders that I want to copy onto an external hard drive, however I do not want it to copy any PDF, EXE or ZIP files across to save space. Is there any software that will help me achieve this? I have looked at TeraCopy but this doesn't seem to have any filter mechanism on it. I am using Windows XP (* sigh *). *edit: found the xcopy command, will this do it? Can anyone help me with the syntax?

• Copyrights concerning code snippets and larger amounts of code

  I am designing a public code repository. Users will be allowed to post and edit whatever amount of code they want, from code snippets to entire multi-file projects. I have a few major legal concerns about this: Not getting sued/shut down - I feel the site would be a much easier target than tracking down an individual user to sue. I have looked around a bit and see links to legal info in the footer of each page is common. What specific things should I do--and what does does a site such as YouTube (which I see copyrighted material on all the time) do--for protection? Citing sources and editing sourced code - If a user wants to post code that isn't theirs, what concerns/safeguards should I have? Will a link suffice, and what do I need further to allow the code to be edited (to improve it for example)? What can happen if a user posts copyrighted code without citing it? Large chunks of code - What legal differences should I look out for as the amount grows? Not having a mess of licenses for the site - I would like to have a single license (like RosettaCode) that keeps things simple for interaction on the site. I want the code to be postable and editable. I have looked into StackOverflow's CreativeCommons license a little and it says that If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one. And on RosettaCode: All software found on Rosetta Code should be considered potentially hazardous. Use at your own risk. Be aware that all code on Rosetta Code is under the GNU Free Documentation License, as are any edits made by contributors. See Rosetta Code:Copyrights for details. What other licenses are like this? Commercializing the site - In what ways can I and can't I make money off of a site that contains code like this? All code will be publicly visible. Initial thoughts are having ads or making money by charging for advanced features.

  Hi, How can I make the WPF DataGrid have some sort of improved "copy and paste" where I can select a single cell , copy using Ctrl-C , select a bunch of cells of columns and paste using Ctrl-V ??? So for example...in the image bellow ...I want to be able to copy the "Tech" word to all the highlighted cells just by a Ctrl-C on tech, a select of the cells, and a Ctrl-V ... Regards, Seb
