  • NVIDIA error "fallen off the bus"

    i have been having a Serious Issue with my LG notebook and its Nvidia Geforce 310M GPU. It usualy (99% of the time) happens when i leave the computer idle for a while, but it has also happened sometimes while i was using the PC. Suddenly, (usualy when computer is idle) the screen goes black, and the pc freezes completely on the black screen. (not even ping responses). The only sollution is to Hard Reset the machine. The problem does not seem to be hardware, because when i boot into windows 7, it works normaly, for days. I am desperate with this problem, because it makes my Ubuntu practicaly unusable.   • How do I get my Lexmark x4650 printer working?

    I think that my printer stopped working with the switch to gnome 3 or unity. Yes I have tried 32 and 64 bit os's. Here is the driver In order to actually install the driver, you need to extract it and then open up terminal and type sudo and then a space. Then drag the script into the terminal window.   • One-way platform collision

    I hate asking questions that are specific to my own code like this, but I've run into a pesky roadblock and could use some help getting around it. I'm coding floating platforms into my game that will allow a player to jump onto them from underneath, but then will not allow players to fall through them once they are on top, which require some custom collision detection code. The code I have written so far isn't working, the character passes through it on the way up, and on the way down, stops for a moment on the platform, and then falls right through it. What kind of installer would you recommend (free and/or cheap is preferred) that is cross-platform (Mac, Windows 2000+, Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Redhat, or derivatives)) and lets me deploy Google Chrome Apps on workstations? It would need to let me deploy Google Chrome, or update Google Chrome to a particular version, as necessary, in order for my app to work.

  • Cannot uninstall XP SP3 update

    I need to uninstall Service Pack 3 because it broke a program I rely on (FrameMaker). I have done this before on other computers using Microsoft's SP3 uninstall instructions. However, on this computer, SP3 is not listed in Add/Remove Programs (and, yes, I have checked the "Show Updates" checkbox), there's no "$NtServicePackUninstall$" restore directory, and either Windows didn't create a restore point for the SP3 install or it has fallen off of the list of restorable points. Does anyone know of any other options?

    Hi there, I am using outlook 2007, and I have configured the bugger to retrieve emails from a 1&1 web mail address. It gets all emails from the remote in-box folder but, if one happen to have fallen into the remote spam folder, I never receive it, in outlook! Is there an easy way out for this one ? Thanks!

  • Resetting root password on Fedora Core 3 - serial cable access only

    A little background: We have an old rackmount server running a customised version of Fedora, manufactured by a company called Navaho. The server is a TeamCAT, running some proprietary rubbish called Freedom2. We have to keep it going - the alternative is extraordinarily expensive, and the business is not likely to be running much longer to justify changing things. Through one means or another, it has fallen upon me to try and resolve our lack of root access. The previous admin has fallen under the proverbial bus, and nobody has any clue. We have no access to the root account for this server. ssh is running on the server, and there is one account admin that we can login with, however it has no permission to do anything (ironic...) The only other way into the server is with a null-modem serial cable. This works... up to a point. I can see the BIOS, I can see the post BIOS screen, and then I see "Starting grub", followed by another screen with about four lines of Linux information, but then it stops at that point. The server continues booting, and all services come online after around two minutes, but the serial terminal displays no more information. I understand it is possible to put Linux into "single user mode" to reset a root password, but I have no idea how to do this beyond trying to interrupt it at the grub stage listed above. When I have tried it just froze. It was almost like grub had appeared (since the server did not continue booting) but I couldn't see it on the serial terminal. Which made me think maybe the grub screen has some different serial settings? I don't know... it's the first time I've ever used serial for access! A friend of mine suggested trying to use a Fedora boot CD. We could boot from USB, so something along this approach is possible but again we still can only see what's going on with the serial terminal, so it might not be achievable. Does anyone have any suggestions for things I can try? I appreciate this is a bit of a long shot, but any assistance would be invaluable. *UPDATE 1 - 28/8/12 * - we will be making some attempts on this today and will post further details later!

  • What skills should a developer/tester learn in order to move into a permanent Systems Analysis role?

    I have been with a software services firm for 5 years and have fallen into a "jack of all trades" role, which I am looking to move out of. I've spent about 1 year each in programming (VB/VB.NET), application support, systems analysis, and most recently, software testing, which in my current position is all manual. I've really lost interest in the programming and testing roles; I would prefer a position where I get to work more with people, such as systems analysis. I even got a chance to be a trainer at the same company for a few months, a temporary position which I enjoyed very much. Given that most of my real experience is with software, support, and testing, what knowledge areas and skills should I focus on learning and mastering in order to make myself an attractive candidate for a permanent position as a business/systems analyst?

  • Best hardware for a Ubuntu Computer?

    Hey all. I'll be needing a new PC soon, but I've decided to build my own, so my question is...what's the best hardware for Ubuntu? Specifically, in terms of graphics cards; I'm looking for something that will run smoothly (for Compiz's effects and Unity) but will be quite modern (IE: have a HDMI output) The machine itself is just a generic computer, nothing special; I just want to future-proof it. I'm looking at quad-core chips and 3-4 gig of RAM. I want something that will play nice with Ubuntu; now, and in the future... I used to build machines years ago, but I've fallen behind (that was in the Windows 98 era...so yeah, quite a while ago!) My main problem is the graphics card; I'd prefer to stick with NVIDIA, but only a tiny amount of computers I've seen play nice with Nouveau.

  • Help identifying device and driver for 0bda:1724

    I've got a new Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. The onboard lan/bluetooth device is identified in Linux as 0bda:1724 (via lsusb). No network peripherals are reported from lspci. From the interwebs, the vendor:product above looks to be RT2573, however, in Windows, the device is identified as RTL8723A. Unfortunately, I have followed both roads, trying rt2500usb, rt2x00usb, and rtl8723e. I have emailed Realtek asking them for help but so far my email has fallen on deaf ears.   • Are too many assertions code smell?

    I've really fallen in love with unit testing and TDD - I am test infected. However, unit testing is used for public methods. Sometimes though I do have to test some assumptions-assertions in private methods too, because some of them are "dangerous" and refactoring can't help further. (I know, testing frameworks allo testing private methods). So, It became a habit of mine that (almost always) the first and the last line of a private method are both assertions. I guess this couldn't be bad (right ??). However, I've noticed that I also tend to use assertions in public methods too (as in the private) just "to be sure". Could this be "testing duplication" since the public method assumpotions are tested from the unit testng framework? Could someone think of too many assertions as a code smell?

  • Implementing top view physics using box2D

    How can top view physics games be done in box2D? One idea I have is to set the linear velocity of an object manually or to alter the linear and angular damping as my object moves over different surfaces. For example if my object is over a wet surface it'll have less linear damping and if it is over rough surface it'll have more damping. And to see if my object has fallen over an edge I'll try to use an AABB and check if its still inside or manually see if object.x > boundary.x etc. Is there any better way?

  • How do I prevent a KActor from changing the orientation of its Z-Axis?

    So I have an object that inherits from KActor that I would like to behave as a dynamic physics object, but I want its Z-Axis to remain upright, but very stiffly. I've tried the bStayUpright that triggers the "Stay Upright Spring". The problem is, it's a spring, and the object in question oscillates into position when I want it to remain oriented properly without wobbling. In the image above, the yellow block has fallen onto the gray box, and it is currently pivoting about the contact point as it tries to right itself. Should I be tweaking the StayUprightMaxTorque and StayUprightTorqueFactor parameters, or should I be using a Constraint of some sort?

  • Google Webmaster Tools Index dropped to Zero [closed]

    Earlier this year I rebuilt my website using ZenCart. Immediately I saw a drop in index status from 59 to 0. I then signed up for Google Webmaster Tools and noticed the Index status took a dramatic drop and has never recovered. I have worked to add content and I know I am not done, but have not seen any recovery of this index since. What confuses me is when I look at the sitemap status under Optimization it shows me there are 1239 submitted and 1127 pages indexed. Most of my pages have fallen off page one for relevant search terms and some are as far back as page 7 or 8 where they used to be on the first page. I have made some changes in the past week to robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but have not seen any improvements. Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? My website is andersonpens.net. Thanks!
