• Ubuntu 14.04.1 will not load - stops in tty1

  I was following some "guides" on how to clean my system and have cleaned it so well that it doesn't work anymore. Example: in synaptic, I completely removed all packages in "Not installed: residual configuration" and a ton of other packages I "don't need". I know this has probably been asked a trillion times but I really need to find out how to get back to the working OS I had about two hours ago. One hour of googling has not helped me, so I am asking here. When I start Ubuntu, usually nothing happens for quite some time and then tty1 starts. I can log in normally, but I don't know how to proceed from there. I can do: less /var/log/apt/history.log and get a log, but I don't know how to get started with this...

• Ubuntu 10.04 and fedora 14 grub conflict

  I tried to triple boot Windows xp, Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.04. I first installed Windows xp, then fedora followed by Ubuntu. The problem is that i don't get option to boot Ubuntu while Xp boots fine. It seems Ubuntu was unable to replace Fedora's grub with its own at MBR. Looking at their grub conf file, Fedora and Ubuntu identifies same harddisk as two different devices and i do have another 80 GB harddisk which doesn't have any OS. Below is the details on my partitions and partial information from grub files of both OS. • Install GNU Emacs GUI in Fedora

  I've installed the "emacs" package from yum, but typing emacs at the terminal doesn't launch the GUI version. I was under the impression it installed by default, and emacs -nw would be used for the terminal version. Is there a GUI package available for Fedora 14 (GNOME)? I couldn't find "emacs-gtk" or "emacs-gnome" or any X packages with yum search emacs-. Edit: To clarify, this is about GNU Emacs and not XEmacs.

• How to remove Games on Fedora 14?

  While installing the fedora desktop I had unchecked the Games and Entertainment section but I can still see the same Games options available in the menu. I tried checking the same in the Add/Remove Programs but I was not able to get the option for uninstalling the same. Games which are present are: AisleRiot Solitaire, lagno, Mines and Sudoku I would like to delete the games options available. Can someone help me doing the same?

But I don't know why it keeps reporting the http error 416. I searched in google and found the following description of the error but it doesn't seem to help much. HTTP ERROR 416 - Requested Range Not Satisfiable A 416 status code indicates that the server was unable to fulfill the request. This may be, for example, because the client asked for the 800th-900th bytes of a document, but the document was only 200 bytes long. It suggests me to use the --skip-broken option, I tried and the output is the same. I already tested many times, it just doesn't work when the --security option is used. What could be the possible cause for this problem?

• Cocos2d: Changing b2Body x val every frame causes jitter

  So, I have a jumping mechanism similar to what you would see in doodle jump where character jumps and you use the accelerometer to make character change direction left or right. I have a player object with position and a box2d b2Body with position. I'm changing the player X position via the accelerometer and the Y position according to box2d. pseudocode for this is like so -----accelerometer acceleration------ player.position = new X -----world update--------- physicsWorld-step() //this will get me the new Y according to the physics similation //so we keep the bodys Y value but change x to new X according to accelerometer data playerPhysicsBody.position = new pos(player.position.x, keepYval) player.position = playerPhysicsBody.position Now this is simplifying my code, but I'm doing the position conversion back and forth via mult or divide by PTM_. Well, I'm getting a weird jitter effect after I get big jump in acceleration data. So, my questions are: 1) Is this the right approach to have the accelerometer control the x pos and box2d control the y pos and just sync everthing up every frame? 2) Is there some issue with updating a b2body x position every frame? 3) Any idea what might be creating this jitter effect? I've collecting some data while running the game. Pre-body is before I set the x value on the b2Body in my update method after I world-step(). Post of course is afterwards. • Fedora 17 keeps using fedora 16 kernel

  I did run preupgrade to upgrade my Fedora 16(x64) to Fedora 17. And it seemed to work fine. So I got the new gimp 2.8, gcc 4.7.0 and so on. But the system keeps using the old kernel from fc16. Uname -a gives me: Linux localhost.localdomain 3.3.6-3.fc16.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed May 16 21:43:01 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The system downloaded the new kernel, so I got /boot/vmlinuz-3.3.7-1.fc17.x86_64 /boot/System.map-3.3.7-1.fc17.x86_64 /boot/initramfs-3.3.7-1.fc17.x86_64.img /boot/config-3.3.7-1.fc17.x86_64 But the system keeps using the old kernel from fc16. • ATI HD5450 w/ Ubuntu 14?

  So, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 right now. Last night I realised that I'm way behind as we're up to 14! Decided to run the updater and figured I'd take the path of least resistance (but lengthy choice) of going 12.04 - 12.10 - 13.xx - 14.xx. So I download the first packet and then get an error message about my graphics card perhaps not working in 12.10. Now part of the reason I was looking to upgrade is because I get (and have always had) this strange occasional flickering - now that I have two screens it's just on the second monitor.....oddly this is not the same port that was giving issues before). The graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD5450 and I have the Catalyst (I think it's 13 or 14) driver installed - last night. It could be that the graphics card has never worked properly...I bought the PC new and with an "upgraded" video card and it's always suffered with this flicker. I just figured that the drivers weren't right or something. So I have 3 questions: 1) is my video card broken or is the driver letting it down and causing the flicker? 2) will it be able to handle the upgrade to 14 via 13? Or should I cut my losses and get something newer? 3) if I should get something newer....what should I get ( Thanks in advance....

• Keyboard doesn't function after Fedora 17 update

  I updated my Fedora 16 installation to Fedora 17 on Saturday, and the update worked without reporting any errors. I carried on working on the machine in question and then switched the computer off. Last night I went back on the computer, I switched it on and got to the log in screen. At this point I tried to type in my password but the keyboard wouldn't work. I unplugged it (it's a PS/2 keyboard) and plugged it back in. The lights flashed for a split second but the keyboard still wouldn't work. I then plugged the keybaord in to a USB to PS/2 adapter, and the keyboard still wouldn't work. I restarted the computer and tried to access the BIOS and I was able to do so. So the keyboard doesn't seem to be faulty, it just doesn't work when Fedora boots in to the GUI interface. I did try to boot in to the "recovery mode" of Fedora, and the keyboard works here with no problem. As I still have access to Fedora via a terminal interface, is there anything I can do to fix the keyboard problem via the terminal without having to reinstall Fedora?

  This is my first post, so please let me know if i have inadvertanly broken any rules. Problem There seems to be a problem with HPLIP and USB connections in ubuntu 14.04LTS. After upgrading i managed to get the printing to work but today it has broken. Initial Issue (Solved) After upgrading to unbutntu 14.04 LTS my printer lHP LaserJet 1018 stopped printing (code=12) Looking through the Forumsthere are several issues with printitng and HPLIP so I was able to troubleshoot this. The steps I took were : Reran HPdoctor Ran hp-check Un-installed and installed the latest version of HPLIP (3.14.4) Checked the USB connections lsusb and lsusb-v Re-ran hpcheck Removed the printer from HPLIP Re-ran hpcheck Manually configued HPLIP to the printer hp-setup-g <xxx:yyy> And this worked HPLIP was able to see the printer in the USB , test page printed and was happily working for a few weeks. Current Issue Printer Not working However today my wife complains the printer is not working and checking see that although HPLIP has the same error code and did not seem to be able to see the printer although running lsusb could see the printer. Initially thought this may be due to usb given a new bus/device after being turned on and off and went to repeat the steps above at the moment still seeing an error in that the HPLIP is complaining that it cannot see the device **error: Device not found. • Configuring Expert Search in Communicator 14 and SharePoint 2010

  Communicator 14 provides functionality to be able to search for contacts not just by name, but by skill.  For example a customer service agent at an airline can search for other agents with Travel Advisory experience by typing the search criteria into the Communicator search box and performing a search by keyword.  The search results will return users who have specified that skill in their profile on their SharePoint My Site.  This is actually pretty easy to configure, Ill show you how. Create Search and People Search Results Pages in SharePoint Communicator 14 Expert Search works by using the SharePoint 2010 Search Service to search SharePoint for user profiles with matching keywords.  This requires that you have an Enterprise Search site in your site collection which includes the search service and also the People Results pages.  The easiest way to do this is to create a Search Center site in your site collection. Note: I get an error when trying to create an Enterprise Search site in a Team Site in the SharePoint 2010 RTM bits, so I created it as a site collection that is evident in the URLs you see below. In the screenshots below, you can see that the URL of the SharePoint search service in the Search site collection is http://sps2010/sites/search/_vti_bin/search.asmx, and the URL of the People Search Results page is http://sps2010/sites/Search/Pages/peopleresults.aspx. Point Communications Server 14 to Search and People Search Results Pages For Communicator 14 to be able to perform an Expert Search, you need to configure Communications Server 14 to point to the Search Service and People Search Results page URLs. From a server with the OCS Core bits installed, fire up the Communications Server Management Shell and type Get-CsClientPolicy. Scroll down to the bottom of the output, were interested in setting the values of: SPSearchInternalURL SPSearchExternalURL SPSearchCenterInternalURL SPSearchCenterExternalURL SPSearchInternalURL and SPSearchExternalURL correspond to the internal and external URLs of the SharePoint search service in the Search site collection, while SPSearchCenterInternalURL and SPSearchCenterExternalURL correspond to the internal and external URLs of the people search results pages. Well use the Communications Server Management Shell to set the values of these CS policy properties. For simplicity, Im only going to set the internal URLs here. Set-CsClientPolicy SPSearchInternalURL http://sps2010/sites/search/_vti_bin/search.asmx     -SPSearchCenterInternalURL http://sps2010/sites/Search/Pages/peopleresults.aspx Log out and back into Communicator.  You can verify that these settings were applied by running the Get-CsClientPolicy cmdlet again from the Communications Server Management Shell. However, theres another super-secret ninja trick to verify that the settings were applied: Find the Communicator icon in the Windows System Tray Hold down the Ctrl button Click (left) the Communicator icon in the Windows System Tray do not depress the Ctrl button You should now see an extra menu item called Configuration Information, click it. Scroll down and locate the Expert Search URL and SharePoint Search Center URL keys and verify that their values correspond to those you set using the Set-CsClientPolicy PowerShell cmdlet. Configure a Sharepoint User Profile Import Im not going to provide detailed steps here except to say that you need to configure the SharePoint 2010 User Profile  Service Application to import user account details from Active Directory on a scheduled basis. This is a critical step because there are several user profile properties e.g. SipAddress that are only populated by a user profile import.  When performing an Expert Search, Communicator can only render results for users who have a SipAddress specified. Add Skills to User Profiles Navigate to your My Site and click on My Profile.  This page allows you to set many contact details that are searchable in SharePoint.  Were particularly interested in the Ask Me About property of a users profile.  Expert Search searches against this property to find users with matching skills. Configure a SharePoint Search Crawl Ensure that you have a scheduled job to crawl your Local SharePoint Sites content source.  Depending on how you have this configured, it will also crawl the My Site site collection and add user properties such as Ask Me About to the search index. Thats It! SharePoint 2010 provides new social and collaboration features to help users find other users with similar skills or interests. Expert Search extends this functionality directly into Microsoft Communicator 14, allowing you to interact with the users directly from the search results. • Fedora to Fedora remote desktop does not work (connection closed error, even after setting everything up)

  I'm trying to use remote desktop on my laptop (running Fedora) to my desktop (also running Fedora) on the same local network. I configured Remote Desktop on my desktop via System - Preferences - Remote Desktop, verified that the port is open by nmap, and attempted to connect from my laptop via vinagre (also tried appending :5900 for the port, and using the ip address). In all cases, the connection fails with a popup that says "Connection closed\n Connection to host was closed." EDIT: I am able to use vinagre from the desktop to remote desktop into itself, just not from one machine to the other. I tried vncviewer and a similar problem occurs (unable connect to socket: No route to host (113))

  I have just installed munin-node from the base repo on Fedora 14 and then started it. I found that my munin server is not able to collect data from this node so I tried connecting via telnet to test. When connecting via telnet I see that no plugins are listed: [dave@host ~]# telnet localhost 4949 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. # munin node at host.example.com list quit Connection closed by foreign host. [dave@host ~]# I did not modify anything after the installation. The munin-node.conf is allowing connections from 127.0.0.1 and the default set of plugins in /etc/munin/plugins/ are symlinked to the plugins in /usr/share/munin/plugins/.   Having troubles getting VSFTPD running on Fedora 14. Here is what I have done so far, please let me know if I am missing something. When I try to connect through FTP it says connection time out.
