• Packard Bell EasyNote MZ35 freezes when AC unplugged and wireless on

  I would like to ask for some help debugging an irritating problem I'm having with my Packard Bell EasyNote MZ35 and Ubuntu 10.10. Always when the laptop is connected to a wireless network and the AC power lead is unplugged—so it's running on battery power—the system freezes. The screen turns black and shows the error GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0), although this error is completely unrelated to the actual problem. Previous searches on the internet indicate that this error is unrelated to the bug I'm experiencing. It is suggested that Ubuntu tries to hibernate or suspend and that you're seeing the black screen running 'behind' the X server. That would explain the fact that curiously you still see—but cannot move—the mouse cursor. I've already set all the values of the GConf keys in /apps/gnome-power-manager/actions/ to 'nothing', disabled all power management actions I could find, but it didn't solve the problem. It is important to note that the freeze doesn't happen immediately after you unplug the AC power lead. The icon in the notification area may have changed already, but the freeze only occurs when the Notify OSD bubble appears that tells you how many time is left with your battery. Does anyone here have a clue about this problem? A workaround or the cause? If anyone could help me with disabling possible suspend/hibernate behaviour that might be related to this issue, that would be appreciated too. This issue has been reported as bug #666852.

  Hi. There seems to be a issue with the Easynote range of PB laptops. Since Ubuntu 10.10 does not use a Xorg.conf file to save your gamma / resolution /brightness setting, everytime I turn on my laptop I have to open up a terminal window and use the x-gamma command to set it up to my personal preference. Is there a way to create a configuration file which can save that into the system everytime I load up the OS?   I have been using some older HP JetDirect 300x print servers for a variety of parallel printers over the years. These things work great for every printer I have tried them with, including HP's, Dell's, and even a Mountbatten braille embosser! These have been a boon for printers whose internal network cards fail, but whose parallel ports continue working. I don't have to throw away the $500 printer that is one year and a week old, and can keep using it for many, many years. Now that very few printers are coming with parallel ports, but are coming solely with USB connections and network cards. When the network card fails but the printer is still usable, I want to continue using it on the network with a JetDirect card.   I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon. • Are the new Hewlett-Packard "Sandy Bridge"-based notebooks dispatched globally?

  I'm currently trying to figure out why a European chain retailer is delaying a dv7 [remaining code number is not same with american]; it is listed in their site for several days and while ordered on Monday they still don't have it in their central storage. In an earlier call I was advised that since Intel announces the processor now it may start dispatching from the 6th. Is that true? Is HP obligated not to dispatch it before the 6th? (normally/legally or as a 'deal between gentlemen'). Does anyone know if HP dispatches normally dv7s now? Did they intentionally not dispatch them to retailers before the CES?

• UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. What I have tried so far (which couldn't find the rootkit): TrendMicro OfficeScan Antivirus AVAST Malwarebytes' Anti-malware Ad-Aware Vipre Antivirus GMER TDSSKiller (Kaspersky Labs) HiJackThis RegRuns UnHackMe SuperAntiSpyware Portable Tizer Rootkit Razor (*) Sophos Anti-Rootkit SpyHunter 4 There are no other strange activities on the machine. 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft. • NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? • Correcting color-shifted mirrored i915 driver in 12.04?

  I was called in to fix a friend's malfunctioning HP Pavilion. She's not sure exactly which model, but the sticker on the bottom says "G60". The problem was a failed upgrade to 12.04. I was able to mostly repair it with sudo apt-get -f install, which ran setup and configuration for several hundred packages. The biggest problem at the moment is Xorg. The login screen (lightdm) loads normally but at a reduced resolution (1024x768 instead of 1366x768). But once you log in, it looks like this: Observe that the colors of the dock on the left and the bar at the top are normal. But the background is filled with bizarro color-skewed ghost images of the desktop. In all cases, the actual contents of any programs you run is a totally illegible mess, except that the bar at the top of any program windows looks and acts normally. And the ghost images are interactive! For example, if you click the icon in the top right corner to get the "shut down" menu, the same menu will appear in the ghost images below. Starting a terminal will start a terminal window in both the real desktop and the ghost images, and moving it around updates both the real and ghost desktops. I suspect Xorg is using some kind of wrong driver and/or parameter for the graphics hardware. I would ordinarily check xorg.conf to see what it says, but that apparently doesn't exist any more, and my googling has not yielded any useful techniques for getting Xorg to tell me what settings it decided to use. The weird part is that it works fine on the login screen. It's only when you actually log in as a user that the display gets screwed up. Suggestions?

• Wifi not working after upgrading from 12.04 to 13.10

  I went through loads of posts looking for an answer to my WiFi problems but can't seem to fix it. I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed and WiFi worked fine with no issues whatsoever but then I upgraded to 13.10 it has stopped working. It shows the available networks but I can't connect to any of them it just does that animation thing then stops working. • NSTask or NSThread?

  I have some code that is attached to an NSTimer. Around 5 times every second, it interacts with another application (by emulating keystrokes) and when appropriate spits out an NSNotification, that is handled by another piece of code. While the timer code is running, the UI is unresponsive, so I can't include a 'stop' button that halts the timer. How should I handle this? A separate process (NSTask right?) or thread? Remember that at unpredictable times, the timer code will need to send some info back for processing. Thanks.

• Crashing the OS X Pasteboard

  I have an application that reads in text by emulating CMD-C copy commands and reading the pasteboard - unfortunately this the only way to achieve what I need. Occasionally, something goes wrong in execution (not sure yet if it's related to the copy command or not) and the app crashes. Once in a while, this has a knock on effect on the system-wide pasteboard - any other application that is running will crash if I attempt a copy, cut, or paste. Is there a robust way to handle this - something I should be doing with the NSPasteboard before exiting? Any information on what might be happening is appreciated. • How to store (and use) the current mouse position?

  What is the best way to store the current mouse position (system-wide) and then (later) put the mouse at that stored point? [NSEvent mouseLocation] gets me the position, and I can move the mouse with a CGEventMouseMoved, but they each use a different co-ordinates system (I believe y=0 is the top for NSEvent and the bottom for a CGEvent). I'm worried about the robustness of capturing the screen height and using it to convert between the two - or is this the best approach?

• Debugging unexpected error message - possible memory management problem?

  I am trying to debug an application that is throwing up strange (to my untutored eyed) errors. When I try to simply log the count of an array... NSLog(@"Array has %i items", [[self startingPlayers] count]); ...I sometimes get an error: -[NSCFString count]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1002af600 or other times -[NSConcreteNotification count]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1002af600 I am not sending 'count' to any NSString or NSNotification, and this line of code works fine normally. A Theory... Although the error varies, the crash happens at predictable times, immediately after I have run through some other code where I'm thinking I might have a memory management issue. Is it possible that the object reference is still pointing to something that is meant to be destroyed? Sorry if my terms are off, but perhaps it's expecting the array at the address it calls 'count' on, but finds another previous object that shouldn't still be there (eg an NSString)? Would this cause the problem? If so, what is the most efficient way to debug and find out what is that address? Most of my debugging up until now involves inserting NSLogs, so this would be a good opportunity to learn how to use the debugger.

• How can I check that the NSPasteboard is updated?

  I'm automating a copy command to place some text on the pasteboard every second or so - unfortunately this is my only way of accessing the text, which is in another application. After copying, I access the pasteboard text and process it. Sometimes, the copy command will be sent when nothing is selected - for example in textEdit, if the cursor is at the end of a line (instead of highlighting some text) and you hit copy, you get a system beep because there is nothing selected to copy. The pasteboard does not update and retains its previous data. I can't think of a creative way to identify when this happens. If I send a copy command and the pasteboard doesn't update, is there any kind of time stamp on the pasteboard I can access that will confirm that something has or hasn't been captured? I was looking at the changeCount, but I'm not sure what that is for exactly, and the documentation didn't help me much - red herring? Any simple and effective ideas gratefully received!

• (Not So) Silly Objective-C inheritance problem when using property - GCC Bug?

  Update 2 - Many people are insisting I need to declare an iVar for the property. Some are saying not so, as I am using Modern Runtime (64 bit). I can confirm that I have been successfully using @property without iVars for months now. Therefore, I think the 'correct' answer is an explanation as to why on 64bit I suddenly have to explicitly declare the iVar when (and only when) i'm going to access it from a child class. The only one I've seen so far is a possible GCC bug (thanks Yuji). Not so simple after all... Update - I messed up one line of the original copy and paste - corrected. The @property call was missing (nonatomic, retain) but is a red herring - STILL NEED AN ANSWER! Thanks. I've been scratching my head with this for a couple of hours - I haven't used inheritance much. Here I have set up a simple Test B class that inherits from Test A, where an ivar is declared. But I get the compilation error that the variable is undeclared. This only happens when I add the property and synthesize declarations - works fine without them.
