• How can I get realvnc to accept incoming connections in Windows 7?

  On a Vista machine, I can get the free version of RealVNC to accept incoming connections (i.e., other people can vnc to it). However, I have not been able to get it to work under Windows 7 - the client gets the below error when trying to connect. Has anyone else been able to get RealVNC to accept connections under Win7? • How to resolve a "driver failure" error in the Cisco VPN client connecting from a Windows 7 client

  I have recently upgraded my laptop from Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 Professional. After the upgrade, if I try to use the Cisco VPN client to connect to a network, I get this message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 440: Driver Failure. Prior to the upgrade, I was able to connect with no problems. The version of the client I am using is 5.0.05.0290.

  Ever since watching a .MOV file with Windows Media Player on my pc, I am sporadically getting the below error. Does anyone know the cause of this, or a good way to fix it? • Blackberry product.dll is missing error

  I have a new Blackberry 9630. I downloaded this software for it. When I click on the newly installed "Desktop Manager", I get this error: --------------------------- DesktopMgr.exe - System Error --------------------------- The program can't start because product.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- If I manually search for that file across my entire c:\ drive, it is not there. • Windows 7 desktop does not automatically refresh

  I am using Windows 7. If I delete something from the desktop, then the icon remains there. I have to hit F5 or right-click-Refresh to make the desktop refresh. After the refresh, the icon disappears. The problem is also described here, here, and here. Any suggestions?

• How can I resolve this error when using net start / stop: "The service name is invalid" ?

  We have a server that hosts a service (I'll call it "tomato"). Up until now, a client pc has been able to start and stop this service. They just double-click a batch file, and inside that batch file is the command net stop tomato or net start tomato They recently got a new physical computer, and now those same commands fail with the error: C:\>net stop tomato The service name is invalid. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2185. What do I need to do to let the client pc start and stop this service remotely? Edit: I mis-remembered the original commands. They were not using "net start" and "net stop" remotely. They were using sc \\server_name start tomato and sc \\server_name stop tomato And those commands to indeed still work.

• What is the best way to auto-generate INSERT statements for a SQL Server table?

  We are writing a new application, and while testing, we will need a bunch of dummy data. I've added that data by using MS Access to dump excel files into the relevant tables. Every so often, we want to "refresh" the relevant tables, which means dropping them all, re-creating them, and running a saved MS Access append query. The first part (dropping & re-creating) is an easy sql script, but the last part makes me cringe. I want a single setup script that has a bunch of INSERTs to regenerate the dummy data. I have the data in the tables now. What is the best way to automatically generate a big list of INSERT statements from that dataset? I'm thinking of something like in TOAD (for Oracle) where you can right-click on a grid and click Save As-Insert Statements, and it will just dump a big sql script wherever you want. The only way I can think of doing it is to save the table to an excel sheet and then write an excel formula to create an INSERT for every row, which is surely not the best way. I'm using the 2008 Management Studio to connect to a SQL Server 2005 database.

• Sql Server string to date conversion

  I want to convert a string like this: '10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM' into the equivalent DATETIME value in Sql Server. In Oracle, I would say this: TO_DATE('10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM','MM/DD/YYYY HH:MI:SS AM') This question implies that I must parse the string into one of the standard formats, and then convert using one of those codes. That seems ludicrous for such a mundane operation. Is there an easier way?

• Checkbox in a Crystal Report

  What is the best way to display a checkbox in a Crystal Report? Example: My report has a box for "Male" and "Female", and one should be checked. My current workaround is to draw a small graphical square, and line it up with a formula which goes like this: if {table.gender} = "M" then "X" else " " This is a poor solution, because changing the font misaligns my "X" and the box around it, and it is absurdly tedious to squint at the screen and get a pixel-perfect alignment for every box (there are dozens). Does anyone have a better solution? I've thought about using the old-style terminal characters, but I'm not sure if they display properly in Crystal. Edit: I'm using Crystal XI.

• Should I use block identifiers ("end;") in my code?

  Code Complete says it is good practice to always use block identifiers, both for clarity and as a defensive measure. Since reading that book, I've been doing that religiously. Sometimes it seems excessive though, as in the case below. Is Steve McConnell right to insist on always using block identifiers?
