Challenges Fighting illness & disease requires state-of-the-art imaging modalities and software in order to diagnose accurately, stage disease appropriately and select the best treatment available. Selecting and implementing a new database platform that would deliver the needed performance, reliability, security and flexibility required by the high-end medical solutions offered by HERMES. Solution Decision to migrate from in-house database to an embedded SQL database powering the HERMES products, delivered either as software, integrated hardware and software solutions, or via the cloud in a software-as-a-service configuration. Evaluation of several databases and selection of MySQL based on its high performance, ease of use and integration, and low Total Cost of Ownership. On average, between 4 and 12 Terabytes of data are stored in MySQL databases underpinning the HERMES solutions. The data generated by each medical study is indeed stored during 10 years or more after the treatment was performed. MySQL-based HERMES systems also allow doctors worldwide to conduct new drug research projects leveraging the large amount of medical data collected. Hospitals and other HERMES customers worldwide highly value the “zero administration” capabilities and reliability of MySQL, enabling them to perform medical analysis without any downtime. Relying on MySQL as their embedded database, the HERMES team has been able to increase their focus on further developing their clinical applications. HERMES Medical Solutions could leverage the Oracle Financing payment plan to spread its investment over time and make the MySQL choice even more valuable. “MySQL has proven to be an excellent database choice for us. We offer high-end medical solutions, and MySQL delivers the reliability, security and performance such solutions require.” Jan Bertling, CEO.

  • Anyone using NoSQL databases for medical record storage?

    - by Brian Bay
Electronic Medical records are composed of different types of data. Visit information ( date/location/insurance info) seems to lend itself to a RDMS. Other types of medical infomation, such as lab reports, x-rays, photos, and electronic signatures, are document based and would seem to be a good candidate for a 'document-oriented' database, such as MongoDB. Traditionally, binary data would be stored as a BLOB in a RDBMS. A hybrid approach using a traditional RDBMS along with a 'document-oriented' database would seem like good alternative to this. Other alternative would be something like DB2 purexml. The ultimate answer could be that 'it depends', but I really just wanted to get some general feedback/ideas on this. Is anyone using the NoSql approach for medical records?

  • Best language to develop medical software

    - by Grace
I need to write medical program to manage medical practices (patient records, appointments, prescription, etc). Note that this is not for US practices so US EMRs will not work. What is the best platform to develop the software in ie. language and database? Considerations include: - Integration with the web - will need to have Doctors download updates to the software from the web. Will also post reports from the software unto webpages - The software will include a mobile application - probably for Blackberry - Cost is a big factor - need to minimize the license cost to the users - Need tight security on the program

  • Three Qualities of Effective Medical Practice Websites

Many medical practices now have websites for their physicians. Since physician practices are often quoted outrageously high fees to develop medical practice websites, some doctors try to bypass these services and build the practice website on their own. NOT a good idea unless you are a trained webmaster with an excellent knowledge of design and function!

Hello! I moved my question from stackoverflow here. I cherish the hope that I will be luckier. I'm currently working on my thesis, and I'm looking for an/some online medical image processing grand challenge(s). I already know this site but I need a challenge which has microscopic image dataset like cells, chromosomes, bacterias, viruses etc with classification or recognation objective. Like karyotyping. Maybe someone is working on this field or his university made a challenge what I'm looking for, and can help me. Thank you!

  • Colour scheme for editor - guidelines or medical reccomendations

    - by Kevin D
Is anyone aware of any studies on what colour scheme is best for use in multi-coloured text based computer work? Specifically in terms of reducing eye strain. For instance is a black back ground and light text best? Should it be a dark colour rather than going all the way to black? I've seen the questions on this site about "which is your favourite" that is not what I am after. I also aware that my question may be to specific asking for a colour scheme, if anyone could link me to some guidelines instead that would be appreciated as well. I'm concious of the fact that anyone using a computer is really using it for text based work but with the multitude of colours used to convey information within our modern IDEs I feel this is a good StackExchange site for this question.

  • Steve Jobs Goes On Medical. iPad 2 and iPhone 5 On Track.

    - by Gopinath
Here is a bit of disappointing news for Apple fan boys. Steve Jobs is again going on medical leave as he wants to concentrate on his health for sometime. In an email to the employees of Apple Steve said, At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health..I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011   In the mail, Steve also said that plans for the product releases scheduled in 2011 will not be affected. This means as rumoured iPad 2 In April, iPhone 5 In June With New Hardware. There is not much information on the medical complications Steve is facing now, but many are thinking  its linked to the liver transplant he had in 2009. What ever may be reason, we wish for this speedy recovery. Here is the full content of the email Steve Jobs sent to all employees: Team, At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company. I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011. I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy. • What languages are most commonly used in medical research?

    - by Chris Taylor
For someone about to go into a career in medical research, what language would be the most useful to learn? From my limited experience (I have been a researcher in mathematics and in finance) I have been able to recommend looking at R (for statistics) Matlab (for general numeric processing) and Python (for general purpose programming with statistics/numerics as an add-on) but I don't know which of those (if any) are in common use -- or if there are other, more specialized languages that are used. To be clear, I'm not talking about a professional programmer working in a medical setting. I am talking about a medical or genetics researcher who uses programming to analyse data, or generally to help get their work done.

  • DICOM Image viewer for Windows

    - by Alin Purcaru
In case you were wondering DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a set of standards in medical imaging. I have a CT result saved conforming to that standard and I want to be able to see the scans. The directory structure looks like this: 123456 (folder) |- 2342345 (file) |- 2342346 (file) |- 2342347 (file) |- [...] (more files) DICOMDIR (file) A Google search showed a lot of results for DICOM viewer and I even tried one but it only shows the thumbnails of the images. Could anyone recommend a good viewer so I don't have to try them all? Maybe with export functionality. Thank you, Alin

  • User defined type for healthcare / Medical Records variable name prefixes?

    - by Peter Turner
I was reading Code Complete regarding variable naming in trying to find an answer to this question and stumbled on a table of commonly accepted prefixes for programming word processor software. Well, I'm not a word processor software programmer, but if I was, I'd be happy to use those user defined types. Since I'm a programmer for a smallish healthcare ISV, and have no contact with the larger community of healthcare software programmers (other than the neglected and forsaken HealthCareIT.SE where I never had the chance to ask this question). I want to know if there is a coding convention for medical records. Like Patient = pnt and Chart = chrt and Medication = med or mdctn or whatever. I'm not talking full on hungarian notation, but just a standard that would fit in code complete in place of that wonderful chart of word processor UDT's which are of so little use to me.

  • Is there a HIPAA certification that would be helpful to programmers?

    - by Aequitarum Custos
I work at a Medical Billing company that's software handles many facets of the centers practice, including patients, treatments, etc. To be frank, the only thing I know about HIPAA is security is paramount. I was wondering if there were any training courses with an earned certification proving knowledge/experience that I could use to increase my worth to the company, and give them a selling point (we have HIPAA certified employees). I did a Google search and found this site, but it does not appear legitimate, and I'm trying to avoid any of those fake certification/degree sites. Does anyone know of any recognized and legitimate (preferably government sponsored) HIPAA certifications useful to programmers? If state is a factor, I live in Oklahoma.

  • List of drugs to parse in application

    - by Skoder
Hey, Not sure if that has been asked before, but semantics causes difficulty in searching. Are there any sites which have a list of items for developers to use in applications? For example, you can download Dictionaries in specific formats (e.g. XML) for use in word games. In particular, I was hoping that there might be a list of common medical drugs so that I can use display a list in an application I'm working on as researching and typing 150+ drug names would be quite inefficient. Thanks
