  • Internet doesn't work by default

    - by Adam Martinez
After upgrading to Precise, I am required to run 'sudo dhclient eth0' in a terminal in order to get the internet to work. Everything worked perfectly fine on Oneiric, so It's really puzzling me. I'm thinking it could possibly be something with the kernel, but who knows. • Why don't %MEM values add up to mem in top?

    I'm currently debugging performance issues with my VPS and for that I'm trying to understand which of the processes eat the most memory. Reading top, here's what I get: Mem: 366544k total, 321396k used, 45148k free, 380k buffers Swap: 1048572k total, 592388k used, 456184k free, 7756k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 12339 ruby 20 0 844m 74m 2440 S 0 20.8 0:24.84 ruby 12363 ruby 20 0 844m 73m 1576 S 0 20.6 0:00.26 ruby 21117 ruby 20 0 171m 33m 1792 S 0 9.3 2:03.98 ruby 11846 ruby 20 0 858m 21m 1820 S 0 6.0 0:09.15 ruby 21277 ruby 20 0 219m 11m 1648 S 0 3.2 2:00.98 ruby 792 root 20 0 266m 10m 1024 S 0 3.0 1:40.06 ruby 532 mysql 20 0 234m 4760 1040 S 0 1.3 0:41.58 mysqld 793 root 20 0 250m 4616 984 S 0 1.3 1:20.55 ruby 586 root 20 0 156m 4532 848 S 0 1.2 6:17.10 god 12315 ruby 20 0 175m 2412 1900 S 0 0.7 0:07.55 ruby 3844 root 20 0 44036 2132 1028 S 0 0.6 1:08.22 ruby 10939 ruby 20 0 179m 1884 1724 S 0 0.5 0:08.33 ruby 4660 ruby 20 0 229m 1592 1440 S 0 0.4 2:55.46 ruby 3879 nobody 20 0 37428 964 520 S 0 0.3 0:01.99 nginx As you can see my memory is about 90% used (which is my issue) but when you add up the %MEM values, it goes to about 50-60% only. Same thing, RES doesn't add up to ~350mb. Why? Am I misunderstanding their meaning? Thanks

  • Task Manager: VM Size smaller than Mem usage?

    - by shoosh
The windows XP tasks manager can show two different columns regarding the memory usage of the processes. One is called Mem Usage and the other is VM Size (not on by default, you need to activate it) From what I've gathered, VM size is the size of the entire memory space occupied by the process and Mem Usage is the amount of memory currently committed and used. This assumption is verified by most processes when the VM Size is only slightly larger than Mem Usage for instance my Outlook currently has 79,724 K in VM Size and 56,600 K in Mem Usage But it fails for other processes such as Firefox which currently has 171,900 K for Mem Usage and only 156,440 K in VM Size. How can a process use more memory than the amount of virtual memory allocated to it? So Maybe my interpretation of these columns is wrong. What do they actually mean?

  • Xen domU mem-set issue

    - by Casper Langemeijer
I'm running into a problem on my xen 4.0.1 server (debian squeeze) My host has 32G of memory, Domain-0 has 2048 M assigned to it. (scaled down with xm mem-set Domain-0 2048) top in Domain-0 confirms this. I created a virtual machine config file (using xen-tools) with the following options: memory = '512' maxmem = '2048' Both host and guest machines are running the standard 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 debian kernel. 'xm create' creates a virtual machine with 512MB of memory as expected. Then 'xm mem-set domU 1024' will not expand the memory to 1024MB running 'xm mem-set domU 400' does set the memory to about 400MB Then 'xm mem-set domU 1024' will expands the memory back to 512MB Based on this, you would say that xm ignores the maxmem and silently sets maxmem to 512, but in the output of xm top the MAXMEM column reads 2G. the MEM column will not go over 512M. The output of xm list tells another story, it shows 1024 when I 'xm mem-set domU 1024'. I've googled myself all away around the internet for this issue and found that most people don't scale back Domain-0. I know I've seen a bugreport about the issue I'm experiencing, but can't find it anymore. Does anyone see what I'm doing wrong here? Hmm.. I just upgraded my kernel to the one provided by debian backports. The issue has gone.

Okay, the past few days I have been trying to get some input on my programs. Well I decided to scrap them for the most part and try again. So once again, I'm in need of help. For the first program I'm trying to fix, it needs to show the sum of SEVEN numbers. Well, I'm trying to change is so that I don't need the mem[##] = ####. I just want the user to be able to input the numbers and the program run from there and go through my switch loop. And have some kind of display..saying like the sum is?.. Here's my code so far. #include <iostream> #include <iomanip> #include <ios> using namespace std; int main() { const int READ = 10; const int WRITE = 11; const int LOAD = 20; const int STORE = 21; const int ADD = 30; const int SUBTRACT = 31; const int DIVIDE = 32; const int MULTIPLY = 33; const int BRANCH = 40; const int BRANCHNEG = 41; const int BRANCHZERO = 42; const int HALT = 43; int mem[100] = {0}; //Making it 100, since simpletron contains a 100 word mem. int operation; //taking the rest of these variables straight out of the book seeing as how they were italisized. int operand; int accum = 0; // the special register is starting at 0 int counter; for ( counter=0; counter < 100; counter++) mem[counter] = 0; // This is for part a, it will take in positive variables in //a sent-controlled loop and compute + print their sum. Variables from example in text. mem[0] = 1009; mem[1] = 1109; mem[2] = 2010; mem[3] = 2111; mem[4] = 2011; mem[5] = 3100; mem[6] = 2113; mem[7] = 1113; mem[8] = 4300; counter = 0; //Makes the variable counter start at 0. while(true) { operand = mem[ counter ]%100; // Finds the op codes from the limit on the mem (100) operation = mem[ counter ]/100; //using a switch loop to set up the loops for the cases switch ( operation ){ case READ: //reads a variable into a word from loc. • My smtp server is spammed?

I have a server and the postfix client on it. Since several days, I noticed a lot of processes running there. When checked, there are a lot of emails sent. • kernel mem parameter

    - by Ashfame
As a last resort to my question, I am yet to try the mem parameter of kernel to force it to use the specified amount of RAM. Short Summary - I can only see 3.2GB RAM on a 64bit OS and am not sure ifs a hardware limitation, so wants to try as I found a post on Ubuntuforums. My question is if its ok to play with my resident Ubuntu install or should I be using a live bootable usb? What values do I try (I have 6GB with only 3.2GB being usable) and how to keep it safe? I don't want to burn any of my hardware component at this point of time or make the system unbootable. Running Ubuntu 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

  • Getting the front buffer into a gfx mem surface (Dx9)

    - by lapin
I'm using DirectX 9 to acquire the frontbuffer. There are a couple of ways I know of to get at the front buffer: GetRenderTargetData() GetFrontBufferData() The MSDN page on both of these API calls state that the data is copied from device memory to system memory. I'd like to copy the front buffer surface directly to another graphics memory surface, as I have other manipulations to perform on the acquired surface before returning it to system memory. I'm creating a D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC texture (gfx mem texture) and calling GetFrontBufferData() to write the front buffer to my textures surface0. Is this valid? Will the operation remain in gfx memory, or will it need to move to system memory and then back to graphics memory? If this is the case, is what I'm trying to achieve possible?

  • Ways to organize interface and implementation in C++

    - by Felix Dombek
I've seen that there are several different paradigms in C++ concerning what goes into the header file and what to the cpp file. AFAIK, most people, especially those from a C background, do: foo.h class foo { private: int mem; int bar(); public: foo(); foo(const foo&); foo& operator=(foo); ~foo(); } foo.cpp #include foo.h foo::bar() { return mem; } foo::foo() { mem = 42; } foo::foo(const foo& f) { mem = f.mem; } foo::operator=(foo f) { mem = f.mem; } foo::~foo() {} int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { foo f; } However, my lecturers usually teach C++ to beginners like this: foo.h class foo { private: int mem; int bar() { return mem; } public: foo() { mem = 42; } foo(const foo& f) { mem = f.mem; } foo& operator=(foo f) { mem = f.mem; } ~foo() {} } foo.cpp #include foo.h int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { foo f; } // other global helper functions, DLL exports, and whatnot Originally coming from Java, I have also always stuck to this second way for several reasons, such as that I only have to change something in one place if the interface or method names change, and that I like the different indentation of things in classes when I look at their implementation, and that I find names more readable as foo compared to foo::foo. I want to collect pro's and con's for either way. Maybe there are even still other ways? One disadvantage of my way is of course the need for occasional forward declarations.

  • How To Boot with "mem=1024m" Argument using GRUB - Ubuntu 10.04

    - by nicorellius
I am still working on this question. This new one is a different question so I thought it would be good to post a new question. Is this the proper protocol or should I have just edited the other question? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with the kernel 2.6.32-22-generic on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. When I enter the GRUB menu (I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed as well), I can choose which kernel to boot. I use scroll down to the one I want and press "e" and I expect to be able to enter mem=1024m and force the kernel to use this much memory. But when I run cat /proc/meminfo or look in the process manager after booting wth this argument I still see all the RAM: ~2 GB. Am I using this boot argument incorrectly? The boot configuration (before I add anything) looks like this: insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,1) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 10270f21-1c42-494b-bd3f-813c23f6d\ 518 linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=UUID=10270f21-1c42-494b-b\ d3f-813c23f6d518 ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-22-generic The way I did this was that I added the mem=1024m after the last line and pressed Ctrl+x (Emacs save and boot the kernel) and the system booted. I tried adding mem=1024m to the end and the beginning of this list and it appeared to not change the RAM allocation.

  • Reading a child process's /proc/pid/mem file from the parent

    - by Amittai Aviram
    In the program below, I am trying to cause the following to happen: Process A assigns a value to a stack variable a. Process A (parent) creates process B (child) with PID child_pid. Process B calls function func1, passing a pointer to a. Process B changes the value of variable a through the pointer. Process B opens its /proc/self/mem file, seeks to the page containing a, and prints the new value of a. Process A (at the same time) opens /proc/child_pid/mem, seeks to the right page, and prints the new value of a. The problem is that, in step 6, the parent only sees the old value of a in /proc/child_pid/mem, while the child can indeed see the new value in its /proc/self/mem. Why is this the case? Is there any way that I can get the parent to to see the child's changes to its address space through the /proc filesystem? #include <fcntl.h> #include <stdbool.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> #include <sys/wait.h> #include <unistd.h> #define PAGE_SIZE 0x1000 #define LOG_PAGE_SIZE 0xc #define PAGE_ROUND_DOWN(v) ((v) & (~(PAGE_SIZE - 1))) #define PAGE_ROUND_UP(v) (((v) + PAGE_SIZE - 1) & (~(PAGE_SIZE - 1))) #define OFFSET_IN_PAGE(v) ((v) & (PAGE_SIZE - 1)) # if defined ARCH && ARCH == 32 #define BP "ebp" #define SP "esp" #else #define BP "rbp" #define SP "rsp" #endif typedef struct arg_t { int a; } arg_t; void func1(void * data) { arg_t * arg_ptr = (arg_t *)data; printf("func1: old value: %d\n", arg_ptr->a); arg_ptr->a = 53; printf("func1: address: %p\n", &arg_ptr->a); printf("func1: new value: %d\n", arg_ptr->a); } void expore_proc_mem(void (*fn)(void *), void * data) { off_t frame_pointer, stack_start; char buffer[PAGE_SIZE]; const char * path = "/proc/self/mem"; int child_pid, status; int parent_to_child[2]; int child_to_parent[2]; arg_t * arg_ptr; off_t child_offset; asm volatile ("mov %%"BP", %0" : "=m" (frame_pointer)); stack_start = PAGE_ROUND_DOWN(frame_pointer); printf("Stack_start: %lx\n", (unsigned long)stack_start); arg_ptr = (arg_t *)data; child_offset = OFFSET_IN_PAGE((off_t)&arg_ptr->a); printf("Address of arg_ptr->a: %p\n", &arg_ptr->a); pipe(parent_to_child); pipe(child_to_parent); bool msg; int child_mem_fd; char child_path[0x20]; child_pid = fork(); if (child_pid == -1) { perror("fork"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } if (!child_pid) { close(child_to_parent[0]); close(parent_to_child[1]); printf("CHILD (pid %d, parent pid %d).\n", getpid(), getppid()); fn(data); msg = true; write(child_to_parent[1], &msg, 1); child_mem_fd = open("/proc/self/mem", O_RDONLY); if (child_mem_fd == -1) { perror("open (child)"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } printf("CHILD: child_mem_fd: %d\n", child_mem_fd); if (lseek(child_mem_fd, stack_start, SEEK_SET) == (off_t)-1) { perror("lseek"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } if (read(child_mem_fd, buffer, sizeof(buffer)) != sizeof(buffer)) { perror("read"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } printf("CHILD: new value %d\n", *(int *)(buffer + child_offset)); read(parent_to_child[0], &msg, 1); exit(EXIT_SUCCESS); } else { printf("PARENT (pid %d, child pid %d)\n", getpid(), child_pid); printf("PARENT: child_offset: %lx\n", child_offset); read(child_to_parent[0], &msg, 1); printf("PARENT: message from child: %d\n", msg); snprintf(child_path, 0x20, "/proc/%d/mem", child_pid); printf("PARENT: child_path: %s\n", child_path); child_mem_fd = open(path, O_RDONLY); if (child_mem_fd == -1) { perror("open (child)"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } printf("PARENT: child_mem_fd: %d\n", child_mem_fd); if (lseek(child_mem_fd, stack_start, SEEK_SET) == (off_t)-1) { perror("lseek"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } if (read(child_mem_fd, buffer, sizeof(buffer)) != sizeof(buffer)) { perror("read"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } printf("PARENT: new value %d\n", *(int *)(buffer + child_offset)); close(child_mem_fd); printf("ENDING CHILD PROCESS.\n"); write(parent_to_child[1], &msg, 1); if (waitpid(child_pid, &status, 0) == -1) { perror("waitpid"); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } } } int main(void) { arg_t arg; arg.a = 42; printf("In main: address of arg.a: %p\n", &arg.a); explore_proc_mem(&func1, &arg.a); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } This program produces the output below.   • nedmalloc: where does mem<fm come from?

    - by Suma
While implementing nedmalloc into my application, I am frequently hitting a situation when nedmalloc refuses to free a block of memory, claiming it did not allocate it. While debugging I have come up to the point I see a particular condition which is failing, all other (including magic numbers) succeed. The condition is this: if((size_t)mem-(size_t)fm>=(size_t)1<<(SIZE_T_BITSIZE-1)) return 0; On Win32 this seems to be equivalent to: if((int)((size_t)mem-(size_t)fm)<0) return 0; Which seems to be the same as: if((size_t)mem<(size_t)fm) return 0; In my case I really see mem < fm. What I do not understand now is, where does this condition come from. I cannot find anything which would guarantee the fm <= m anywhere in code. Yet, "select isn't broken": I doubt it would really be a bug in nedmalloc, most likely I am doing something wrong somewhere, but I cannot find it. Once I turn debugging features of nedmalloc on, the problem goes away. If someone here understands inner working of nedmalloc, could you please explain to me why is fm <= m?

  • "Mem Usage" higher than "VM Size" in WinXP Task Manager

    - by Frederick
In my Windows XP Task Manager, some processes display a higher value in the Mem Usage column than the VMSize. My Firefox instance, for example shows 111544 K as mem usage and 100576 K as VMSize. According to the help file of Task Manager Mem Usage is the working set of the process and VMSize is the committed memory in the Virtual address space. My question is, if the number of committed pages for a process is A and the number of pages in physical memory for the same process is B, shouldn't it always be B = A? Isn't the number of pages in physical memory per process a subset of the committed pages? Or is this something to do with sharing of memory among processes? Please explain. (Perhaps my definition of 'Working Set' is off the mark). Thanks.

  • kmemsize problems in VPS even when there is about 500MB free mem

    - by Amer
Hello, I have a site hosted on a Plesk VPS with 512MB memory and keep on getting kmemsize in "black zone" QoS errors. The soft limit of kmemsize is 12,288,832 and hard limit is 13,517,715. The definition Virtuozzo gives is: Size of unswappable memory, allocated by the operating system kernel. What's eating up the kmemsize? Is there any way to reconfigure and increase the kmemsize? The servers barely have any load or processing. Thanks for the help...

  • Trying to get Hobbit clients to show cpu, mem, disk, etc

    - by Bryan Agee
I have a Hobbit server set up with a handful of hosts using conn, http, ssh, and sslcert services, but would like to add the other tests as well. I've installed hobbit-client on a server, and added: # CLIENT:fqdn.example.com to it's host line in bb-hosts, and added: HOST=fqdn.example.com before the default configuration in hobbit-clinets.cfg, but no joy. Does anyone know what else I need to do for those tests to register?

  • CPU/Mem/Disk utilization (average) after process has completed

    - by BassKozz
Ubuntu Server 9.10 So there is the time command which will show you the time it took for a specific process/command to run after the command has completed. For example: :~$ time ls real 0m0.020s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.000s I'd like to also collect the average CPU usage, Memory, and Disk (i/o) utilization after the process has completed using time (or another command if necessary). How can I accomplish this? Mainly I am using this to benchmark MySQL import performance using different innodb_buffer_pool_size settings.

  • Apache going straight to 100% mem usage on localhost

    - by Dennis Pedrie
Hi, I'm running XAMPP on a OS X testing server... I'm the only person sending requests to the server. I've never messed with Apache config before, so I'm kinda without a paddle here. When I start Apache, I get ~10 httpd processes started, and 95% idle CPU. When I request a WordPress page, the CPU usage goes to 50%, and the page loads in about five seconds. It seems like once the page has finished loading, the CPU usage jumps to 100%, almost all of that httpd. A ton of processes get started, and they don't go away, and their CPU usage stays the same. I've changed the MaxRequestPerChild setting and so forth, but nothing seems to solve the problem. Even now, having not send any requests for about 15 minutes, the CPU usage is at 100%. Here's the applicable settings: Timeout 10 KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 0 KeepAliveTimeout 3 <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 0 MaxSpareServers 2 MaxClients 20 MaxRequestsPerChild 50 </IfModule> I had always thought that once the request was made, Apache killed the process. Is there anything I can do to bring down the CPU usage, or is this just something I'll have to deal with? Thanks for helping out an Apache idiot.

  • Random server lag, no CPU/mem/pagefile usage

    - by Kev
We have a fairly new server running Windows 2003 SP2, and the past few days we've noticed random slowdowns. When I'm logged into the server over remote desktop while this is happening, or if I'm physically sitting at the server logged in, suddenly everything becomes extremely laggy. Any UI element I try to interact with takes upwards of ten seconds to react, and then responds very slowly. Then a minute later everything is quite snappy again. During this, I have Task Manager minimized to the tray, and there's no CPU usage. I open it up right after this happens, and there's very little CPU usage on the graph, and no memory or pagefile usage above normal. (Normal being 1.5 GB free in the case of memory.) This is what I see logged into the server, and then users start calling saying things are slow, timing out, and failing--anything to do with our server. No events in the Event Viewer around the times this happens. The context I'm working in (last thing I clicked, etc.) seems different every time--different programs active, different combinations of programs open. Never anything particularly stressful (like adding an event entry to a Cobian Backup configuration, or editing text in TextPad, which has been exceptionally stable in my extensive usage of it.) I would've thought it was just the server, but a family member's home PC (entirely separate) running WinXPSP3 had the same thing happen to it last night a few times. Is this some new behaviour introduced by the latest Windows Updates? Either way, where do I even start to look when nothing seems to be chewing up resources?

  • string manipulation without alloc mem in c

    - by Mike
I'm wondering if there is another way of getting a sub string without allocating memory. To be more specific, I have a string as: const char *str = "9|0\" 940 Hello"; Currently I'm getting the 940, which is the sub-string I want as, char *a = strstr(str,"9|0\" "); char *b = substr(a+5, 0, 3); // gives me the 940 Where substr is my sub string procedure. The thing is that I don't want to allocate memory for this by calling the sub string procedure. Is there a much easier way?, perhaps by doing some string manipulation and not alloc mem. I'll appreciate any feedback.

  • Gearman too many processes issue

    - by Roman Newaza
I use Net_Gearman from PECL, Gearmand 1.1.11 and Gearman Manager. Every time I add background job, I can see new worker listed with no Function, nor Id in Ggearman-Monitor: If I add many messages in the bash loop, after some time it becomes very slow. for i in $(seq 0 9999); do php Client.php && echo $i; done Yesterday, the situation was even worse - I had many error messages in Gearmand log regarding Too many open files and once I added --file-descriptors=49152 as an option and swithched to 1.1.11 from 1.0.6, these errors gone.
