  • Opscode Chef nginx compile from source issue reports successful run but does nothing

    - by v_abhi_v
    I am trying to install nginx from source in Opscode Chef and its bit weird, it runs complaining nothing but does not install it either. This is how my role attributes look like looks like "nginx":{ "default_site_enabled":false, "version":"1.2.6", "init_style":"init", "install_method":"source", "configure_flags":[ "--without-http_access_module", "--without-http_auth_basic_module", "--without-http_autoindex_module", "--without-http_browser_module", "--without-http_charset_module", "--without-http_fastcgi_module", "--without-http_memcached_module", "--without-http_referer_module", "--without-http_scgi_module", "--without-http_split_clients_module" ], "log_dir":"/var/log/nginx", "binary":"/opt/nginx/sbin/nginx", "source":{ "prefix":"/opt/nginx/dist", "modules":["http_ssl_module", "http_gzip_static_module" ] } }, The chef log shows: [2012-12-19T02:37:44+00:00] INFO: Processing bash[compile_nginx_source] action run (nginx::source line 82) [2012-12-19T02:37:45+00:00] INFO: bash[compile_nginx_source] ran successfully I am clueless on what's going on :(

  • Opscode Chef Ohai plugin - How to get a custom plugin to run automatically?

    - by JDS
The Ohai docs are incomplete. Here's what I've been able to do so far: I've created a custom plugin that adds one piece of node data called "my_custom_data" it works when I load it manually in IRB I've used the Ohai cookbook to get it loaded on the servers that need it However, Ohai doesn't load it, neither during Chef runs nor if I run Ohai manually. The docs, here, are of little use in answering this question. http://docs.opscode.com/ohai.html

  • Creating dynamic resource in cookbook

    - by zsong
Long story short, here is my code: template "...." do .... notifies :restart,"service[myservice_One]" notifies :restart,"service[myservice_Two]" end ['One', 'Two'].each do |proj| service 'myservice_#{proj}' do start_command "setsid /etc/init.d/my_command #{proj} start" stop_command "setsid /etc/init.d/my_command #{proj} stop" restart_command "setsid /etc/init.d/my_command #{proj} restart" status_command "setsid /etc/init.d/my_command #{proj} status" supports :status => true, :restart => true action [:enable,:start] end end I got this error: template[...] is configured to notify resource service[celery_worker_One] with action restart, but service[celery_worker_One] cannot be found in the resource collection. I know I can duplicate my code to make it work but how to dynamically create the services? Thanks!

  • Deploy an AWS Auto Scaling groups using Chef Server

    - by Yoga
You can, for example, to deploy an an Auto Scaling groups consists of web severs, ELB and DB using AWS CloudFormation (with Chef server): http://aws.amazon.com/cloudformation/aws-cloudformation-templates/ But, you need to initially create a CF template, is it possible to do it only using Chef Server and Knife? We don't want to rely much on the CloudFormation and seems the hosted Chef server at (http://www.opscode.com/) is able to do so. Any opensource alternative? Thanks.

  • Are there any GOOD Chef, Chef-Server and Chef-Client tutorials out there?

    - by btelles
Hi there, Chef from Opscode seems to be really useful for configuring servers and such, but trying to follow their documentation is a little difficult. Some terms are defined after they are used, and definitions sometimes reference new terms that you haven't yet encountered. Anyone know of any GOOD tutorials/walk-throughs for getting a good understanding of Chef, Chef-Server and Chef-Client? I remember seeing one video presentation online, but it barely scratched the surface.

  • Best configuration and deployment strategies for Rails on EC2

    - by Micah
I'm getting ready to deploy an application, and I'd like to make sure I'm using the latest and greatest tools. The plan is to host on EC2, as Heroku will be cost prohibitive for this application. In the recent past, I used Chef and the Opscode platform for building and managing the server infrastructure, then Capistrano for deploying. Is this still considered a best (or at least "good") practice? The Chef setup is great once done, but pretty laborious to set up. Likewise, Capistrano has been good to me over the past several years, but I thought I'd take some time to look around and seeing if there's been any landscape shifts that I missed.

  • Why am I getting 'undefined method' exceptions when executing 'run_list add', 'run_list remove' and 'rackspace server delete'?

    - by Peter Groves
[Originally posted this to opscode forum, got no response] I’m testing out a free hosted chef-server account and multiple subcommands are failing with ‘Unexpected Errors’. Perhaps my version and the server version are incompatible? OS: Ubuntu 12.04LTS Local Chef: 10.12.0 (Installed through gem) Local Ruby: 1.8.7 Also, the workstation machine has been manually configured, but the client(s) I’ve been experimenting with are launched with the Rackspace plugin (using ‘knife rackspace server create…’) The problem commands seem to fail when talking to the host chef-server, however, before it ever tries to modify the client, so I don’t believe that’s where the problem exists. The virtual-servers that are launched by ‘knife rackspace server create’ are launched properly but then deleting them with knife fails. If I include a recipe in the run_list when I create the server, the recipe is properly added to the run_list. If I try to add it later or remove the one that there server was initialized with, those commands fail. Here is the output of a few relevant commands (with stacktraces): https://gist.github.com/7100ada3fd6690113697

  • Chef cookbooks marked as executed

    - by Gonzalo Alvarez
I have setup a Chef server in our network that I use to manage several nodes. These nodes have a chef-client installed executing as a daemon every X minutes. The problem is that every time the client runs, it executes the recipes for all the cookbooks, even those previously executed, so it consumes resources and sometimes it even breaks thinks (with services restarts, for example). I know that I can avoid executing a piece of code or a recipe I create as detailed here: Prevent chef recipe from executing previously executed action? but, would this mean that I should modify any cookbook that I download from the opscode repository. In other words, is it possible to make the chef server (or the clients) to mark the cookbooks as 'executed' as soon as they are executed the first time?

  • Pass User Data to AWS client

    - by bearrito
Has anyone successful passed user data to the AWS CLI ? I have tried various incantations of the following but it does not work. Docs say string must be base64 encoded : http://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/latest/reference/ec2/run-instances.html The instance logs never indicate the script is executed and chef is installed. aws ec2 run-instances --image-id ami-a73264ce --count 1 --instance-type t1.micro --key-name scrubbed --iam-instance-profile Arn=arn:aws:iam::scrubbed:instance-profile/scrubbed --user-data $(base64 chef_user_data.sh --wrap=0) chef_user_data.sh #!/bin/bash curl -L https://www.opscode.com/chef/install.sh | sudo bash

  • Chef-solo cannot locate an nginx recipe template

    - by crftr
I have been recently experimenting with Chef. I thought I would attempt to rebuild my personal web server using chef-solo. It's an AWS instance running the Amazon 64bit Linux AMI. My first objective is to install nginx. I have cloned the Opscode cookbook repository, and am using their nginx cookbook. My problem appears to be that chef-solo cannot find a template after it has started the process. The command I'm using is chef-solo -j /etc/chef/dna.json dna.json { "nginx": { "user": "ec2-user" }, "recipes": [ "nginx" ] } solo.rb file_cache_path "/var/chef-solo" cookbook_path "/var/chef-solo/cookbooks" ...the output [root@ip-10-202-221-135 chef-solo]# chef-solo -j /etc/chef/dna.json /usr/lib64/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/systemu-2.2.0/lib/systemu.rb:29: Use RbConfig instead of obsolete and deprecated Config.
