How can I improve overall system performance?

What are your tips for improving overall system performance on ubuntu? Inspired by this question I realized that some default settings may be rather conservative on Ubuntu and that it's possible to tweak it with little or no risk if you wish to make it faster. This is not meant to be application specific (e.g. make firefox load pages faster), but system wide. Preferably 1 tip per answer, with enough detail for people to implement it. A couple of mine would be: Install Preload (via Software Center or sudo apt-get install preload); Change Swappiness value - "which controls the degree to which the kernel prefers to swap when it tries to free memory"; What are yours? PS: Since this is not intended to have a unique answer but rather, several useful tips, I'm making this community wiki out-of-the-box.

keepass not working with wine

I installed Keepass 1.16 in my thumbdrive, which reportedly works with wine (as per Keepass homepage), but after entering the master password it just hangs and shows the "The program keepass has encountered a serious problem and needs to close" screen. I got this error msg among the stack trace on the terminal: wine: Call from 0x7b844633 to unimplemented function bcrypt.dll.BCryptOpenAlgorithmProvider, aborting On windows, everything runs fine. I'm using wine-1.1.27 on ubuntu 9.04 Any thoughts?

Context menu on Intellj IDEA

I have installed Intellij IDEA 10 on Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) and the way the context menu works is annoying me. The context menu is visible as long as I keep the right button pressed (if I release the button, the menu disappears). To click on a menu item, I have to position the cursor upon the item with the right button pressed and then release it. I've also figured out two alternative ways to keep the menu visible with the right button released: To right-click, drag, and release the button outside the context menu. Ctrl + Right-click or Shift + Right-click But I would expect the "normal" behavior: that when I right-click and release, the menu keeps visible until the next click (on an item or outside the menu). Is there a way to change this behavior? Thanks in advance.

Should interfaces define properties?

Interfaces, as defined by MSDN "contain only the signatures of methods, delegates or events." However, since properties are no more than syntactic sugar for a get and set method, they are also allowed in interfaces. My question is - is there any situation where defining properties in an interface is appropriate or should we stick to the scenarios described by MSDN?

Lost connection to MySQL server during query

I have a huge table and I need to process all rows in it. I'm always getting this Lost connection message and I'm not able to reconnect and restore the cursor to the last position it was. What is the best framework for developing a Java CRUD for an existent database?

We have a Java application with lots of config tables on the database (Oracle). We'd like to have Web-based GUIs for setting up these tables, that we currently update via SQL queries. What is the simplest way to develop CRUDs for a subset of our database? Is there any Java-based framework for doing this?
