  • How to determine expected license serial number by viewing an EXE File?

    I was attempting to install an exe that requires a serial number before the install, which the vendor has not provided to us yet. This got my wheels turning about whether there is any information that can be gained from viewing an exe using a hex editor/VI/etc? Using VI to view an exe, I can see some sections of plain text, but it is difficult to determine what it refers to without any context around it. Is it possible to determine any information by reading an exe? Thanks

However, the ActiveX content is not displayed in Vista or Window 7. I've tried relaxing the security settings to no avail. Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.

  • NServiceBus Generic Host and mqsvc.exe high CPU

    We have been doing some work with NServiceBus recently and observed some unusual behaviour which was caused by our mistake and seemed worthy of a small post.   The Scenario In our solution we were doing some standard NServiceBus stuff by pushing a message to a queue using NServiceBus.  We had a direct send/receive scenario rather than a publish/subscribe one.   The background process which was meant to collect the message and then process it was a normal NServiceBus message handler.  We would run the NServiceBus.Host.exe which would find the handler and then do the usual NServiceBus magic.   The Problem In this solution we were creating some automated tests around this module of the integration process to ensure that it would work well.  We had two tests.   Test 1 This test would start NServiceBus.Host.exe using the Process object, then seed a message to the queue via our web service façade sitting above the queue which wrapped NServiceBus.  The background process would then process the message and the test would check the message had been processed fine.   If all was well then the NServiceBus.Host.exe process was stopped.   Test 2 In test 2 we would do a very similar thing except that instead of starting the process the test would install NServiceBus.Host.exe as a windows service and then start the service before the test and once the test was executed it would stop the test.   The Results of the Tests Test 1 worked really well, however in test 2 we found that it didn’t really work at all, instead of doing the background process we were finding that between mqsvc.exe and NServiceBus.Host.exe the CPU on the machine was maxed and nothing was really happening.   The Solution After trying a few things we found it was the permissions on the queue were not set correctly.  Once this was resolved it all worked fine and CPU was not excessive and ran just like the console application.   I think the couple of take aways from this are:   Make sure you set the windows service for NserviceBus Generic Host to the right credentials When you install the generic host as a windows service then by default it will use the default windows credentials.  For any production like scenario you should be using a domain account to run the process as via the windows service. Make sure you have the queue set with the right permissions For the credentials you have used to configure the generic host as a windows service you should ensure that this user has the appropriate permissions for any queues it will interact with. Make sure you turn on the right logging configuration in NServiceBus When this wasnt working correctly we didnt know there was an issue, we were just experiencing the high CPU condition.  I am a little surprised that there wasnt something logged and that the process didnt crash.  I guess this could be by design bearing in mind that the process could be monitoring many queues.  In this point Im just saying that originally we didnt have all of the log4net logging which is available from NServiceBus turned on.  Its probably a good idea to have this turned on and configured until you are happy your solution is working fine.   Thanks to Ahmed Hashmi on my team who got this working in the end.

    I'm trying to use JACOB to interact with a COM object. I was able to invoke an initialization method on the object (and to get its properties), but am not getting any events back. The code is quoted below. I have a sample HTML+Javascript page (running in IE) that successfully receives events from the same object. I'm considering the following options, but would appreciate any concrete troubleshooting ideas ... Send my Java program to the team who developed the COM object, and have them look for anything suspicious on their side (does the object have a way on knowing whether there's a client listening to its events, and whether they were successfully delivered?) Get into the native parts of JACOB and try to debug on that side.   • Hot to make COM ActiveX object work in IE 64 bit?

    Hi! I have a COM object embeded in ASP.NET page using <object classid="clsid:XXX...">. It works in IE 32 bit, but does not work in IE 64 bit - can't access its functions. There are no error messages, no event logs where I can get some information. The dll is in C#, includes COM visible class, compiled for Any CPU (though I also tried x86), and registered during client installation by executing regasm. This creates registry keys, well everything works fine except for IE 64. I searched internet about the issue or at least some guidlines and didn't find anything. I received an answer on another forum, something about _MERGE_PROXYSTUB (I guess it's preprocessor definition?) and ProxyStubClsid32 registry key, but not very detailed. Well, I searched again, didn't find much, and experimented: rebuilt with _MERGE_PROXYSTUB defined, created ProxyStubClsid32 keys everywhere, but with no result. What can be at least possible solutions or points to look at? Maybe there is a way at least to get the logs about why IE 64 can't access it?

This might be the case of your Production server.   Package structure So, to get started you need to create a folder named “DeploymentSSDTRedistributable”. This folder will have the following structure :         The dacpac and dll files are the outputs of your Visual Studio 2012 Database project. If your database project references another database project, you need to put their dacpac and dll here too, otherwise deployment will not work. The publish.xml file is the publish configuration suitable for your target environment. It holds connexion strings, SQLVARS parameters and deployment options. Review it carefully.   • How can I get more info on high-CPU rundll32.exe process?

    I recently clean-installed Win7 on my HP8530. Everything works well most of the time, but for the last few days, every morning after my computer has been idle overnight, I find that rundll32.exe is consuming a steady 50% of CPU (i.e. all of one processor). The only way I can make it go away is by restarting. Process Explorer has no information on what the process is running. If I try to do anything to rundll32.exe (kill process, suspend, etc.) I get "Error opening process: Access is denied." None of the tabs in the ProcExp properties dialog has any information at all. I have Norton Internet Security running with the latest definitions; I've run a full system scan and it gives me a clean bill of health. How can I get more information on why this process is running?

  • Problem downloading .exe file from Amazon S3 with a signed URL in IE

    I have a large collection of Windows exe files which are being stored/distributed using Amazon S3. We use signed URLs to control access to the files and this works great except in one case when trying to download a .exe file using Internet Explorer (version 8). It works just fine in Firefox. It also works fine if you don't use a signed URL (but that is not an option). What happens is that the IE downloader changes the name from 'myfile.exe' to 'myfile[1]' and Windows no longer recognizes it as an executable. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

    I recently created an Intranet application for my company, but to work properly it must execute an ActiveX control to locally run a program. However, the only way I found for this to work was using Internet Explorer, and setting Intranet security to a personalized "very low" configuration for being able to execute ActiveX scripts without asking. I think there is a way to automatically configure IE's settings for all users from Active Directory, but I can't find it. Any help?

  • Cannot run "Automation Anywhere" exe files from console (session 0) on Windows Server 2003 64 bit

    I have a simple exe created from an Automation Anywhere task that displays a message box saying hello world. I created this simple exe just for debugging the following issue. When I log in to the console (session 0), and run the Automation Anywhere created executable, it starts to run the task, it shows up in the applications and processes list in the task manager and it shows the two "loading..." windows briefly on the screen, just like normal. But after that, nothing happens... the "hello world" message does not show up. The exe is done and is removed from the application and process list in the task manager. The user I am logged in as, has admin rights and the machine uses "autologin" to automatically log in using this profile when it starts up. If I right click on the exe and "run as" another admin user, the exe runs properly, showing the "hello world" message. Also, if I log into the server in a new session, with the original user (the one that has the problems in session 0), and then run the exe, it runs properly and shows the "hello world". It works fine in any session other than the console session. There is something about the console session that is causing the exe not to run properly... even though it does appear to start running the exe. I should also mention that everything was working fine until Monday at midnight, after which none of the executables could be run successfully. Nothing was changed on the server and no updates were installed. I have since installed windows updates, but that didn't change anything. Looking for some advice on how to get these executables working in the console session again. Thanks!

Problem: When we look at our icon file and exe with embedded icon file in various Windows Explorer file views, the icon file is displayed in a higher quality mode than the icon displayed for our executable even though the icon in our executable contains the exact same icon. Our exe's icon has jaggier edges which leads me to believe that Windows Explorer may be trying to upsize a lower resolution icon rather than picking an icon appropriate for the actual display size. In a multi-format icon file, is there a specific order we should use for positioning each icon format? For example, we have an icon file with icons in the following formats: - 16x16 - 32x32 - 48x48 - 64x64 - 128x128 - 256x256 We are testing the appearance of our exe's icon using Windows Explorer under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Any suggestions appreciated.

    I have been having some issues with explorer.exe hanging when I create a new folder. If I use Analyse Wait Chain in the Resource Monitor it says "One or more threads of explorer.exe are waiting to finish network I/O". The problem is TraceView requires some difficult-to-come-by stuff... either pdbs, or CTL files, and .TMF files. I tried using the explorer.pdb that comes with the Windows SDK but that did not work. I do not see explorer.exe in the "named providers". And I have no idea where to locate the ctl or .TMF files for explorer.exe. So the question is: Is there a way to view the ETW trace messages from explorer? Or shall I just not bother and go back to the age old technique of disabling every explorer extenion one-by-one in the hope its one of them. (Prefer the former as I like to get to the bottom of things!!)

    It has really been a head scratching task for me. I 've tried many options but nothing worked. Finally I found a workaround on google to achive this by TaskScheduler. PROBLEM When we run Teamsite user administration command line tool IWUSERADM.exe though ASP.Net it gives following error: Application popup: cmd.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. CAUSE No specific cause, it seems to be a bug, supposed to be resolved with this Microsoft patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960266. and there is nothing related to permission issue, y web application is impersonated with an administrator account. off course running a bat file from dmin account is a potential secury threat but for this scenario lets conifned our discussion to run the command line tool. RESOLUTION I have not tried this patch as I have not permitted to run this patch on server. Below are the steps to achive the requirement. 1/ Create a batch file which runs the IWUSERADM.exe.         echo - Add Teamsite User    CD E:\Appli\GN00\iw-home\bin    iwuseradm add-user %1 2/ Temporarily create a schedule task and run  the .bat file by scheduled task by ASP.Net code using TaskScheduler http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/tsnewlib.aspx. 3/ Here is the function: private int AddTeamsiteUser(string strBatchFilePath, string strUser) { //Get a ScheduledTasks object for the local computer.     I want to install ubuntu 12.04 LTS along side windows 7 on my Asus 1005P Eee PC. I tried to install it with the Live USB created with the "Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.2.exe" but failed. Alternatively, I downloaded the "wubi.exe" installer from www.ubuntu.com, but it does not run on my pc. Is this version of ubuntu incompatible for the given hardware for side by side installation with windows 7?
