• Healthcare Mobile Database Synchronization Demonstration

  Like many of you, I learn best by getting my hands dirty.  When confronted with the task of understanding a new set of products and technologies and figuring out how they might apply to a vertical industry like healthcare, I set out to create a demonstration.  The video that follows aims to show how the Oracle embedded software portfolio can be applied to a healthcare application.  The demonstration utilizes among others, Java SE Embedded, Berkeley DB, Apache Tomcat, Oracle 11gR2 and Oracle Database Mobile Server. Eric Jensen gives a great critique and description of the demo here.  To sum it up, we aim to show how live medical data can be collected on a medical device, stored in a local database, synchronized to a master database and furthermore propagated to a mobile phone (Android) application.  Come take a look!

• What are some concepts people should understand before programming "big" projects?

  A person new to programming may be able to make a good small program. However, when starting to work on anything bigger than a small (think 1 C source file or Python module) program, there are some general concepts which become much more important when working on "big" (think many Python modules or C files) programs; one example is modularity, another is having a set aim. Some of these may be obvious to people who went to school to learn programming; however, people like me who did not go to programming classes sometimes have to learn these things from experience, possibly creating failed projects in the meantime. ================================================== Please explain what the concept is, and why the concept becomes more important for big programs than by small programs. • Can we put percentage on amount of work of a certain role in project's lifecycle?

  The title may be confusing, but I will elaborate it here. I am trying to figure our how much time and effort each person spend during some project. I divided roles into: - junior developer (works mainly on UI and some light things) - senior developer (develops complex logic, database structures, etc.) - lead developer (leads the team, usually most experienced person) - negotiator/resolver (a person who directly talk to a client trying to either negotiate terms and timeframe or to clarify vagueness presented by a team leader) My AIM is to calculate percentage of role's involvement based on quality, not time (obviously a junior will spend most time in project, but with the least quality). In the end I would get a table which may look like this: Total: 100% ---------------- Junior: 10% Senior: 50% Lead: 30% Negotiator: 10% Can this be achieved? Has anyone found any source which may help me?

• PXE-boot for Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop version

  My aim is to Install the Ubuntu 10.04 desktop version on a remote machine using PXE-BOOT. I'm trying to apply the steps given in PXE-BOOT for Ubuntu 9.10 . (I know this is for 9.10). In "Step 8. Setting Up Boot Files", it says cp -a /media/cdrom/install/netboot/* /tftpboot/ but I wasn't able to find the netboot folder in my Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop CD-Rom. Does that folder only exist in Ubuntu Server edition? Is it possible to do this in the Desktop edition?

I recently started http://blackforestcoder.blogspot.com/ to record my progress working with new technologies and ideas. The main aim being to provide a list of pitfalls and solutions and also to get feedback from readers. Since I set it up 10 days ago I have only had about 2-3 hits even though Google is supposed to be indexing it. How might I boost the hit rate?

• Is it considered blackhat SEO to have hidden text within links?

  My aim is to simply be informative about where a link is pointing to search engines. I have some content that is listed by name and then I have a "Permalink" button. Would it be blackhat SEO to add some hidden text within the anchor that describes where the permalink is pointing? My content is like so: News Item 1 Permalink (<a href="/my-news-item-1"><hidden>News Item 1</hidden> Permalink</a>) Teaser text.. The news title of the block already links to the article, but I think it would be of benefit to users to provide and explicit permalink button.

• Should you salary reflect how much work there is for you or does that not matter? [closed]

  I am working in a consulting company, where the company mostly do IT support. The website is also only focused on IT support, and we do not therefore capture leads for the Web Department. We aim for Small busniess, which needs new computers and firewalls. We were having a performance conversation and talked about salary and my employer told that he was not impressed by the revenue I was generating. I told that I did not have enough work and I would like to get more tasks and project so that i could reach the goal, but that i did not think it was my fault that there was not enough work. He said that it was not his fault either, but he could not pay me more. Is he right that I should not get paid more just because my employee can not get enough Web projects, or should i be paid what i am worth not based on the work amount the sales generate?

• What is the best language to use for building a fulfillment engine [on hold]

  I asked this on stack overflow and was suggested to move it here. I do understand it is a matter of opinion which is exactly what I aim to achieve here... I wanted to know what you think is the best language to write a fulfillment engine in? I cannot provide much detail but I am trying to build a control interface for servers and i wanted to build a program daemon that would process data on the authoritative server and the slave servers( the backbone of the network) with their own daemons running would check regularly(every 5 minutes or so) with the authoritative server and process the commands(securely) I am trying to build this with a minimal footprint(cpu and ram wise for the slaves, authoritative is going to be scalable) and to make it automated so that the user does not have to configure the daemon(installation is automated by the authoritative server) I am leaning away from my usual php set up for simplicity sake. Edit: I am not an expert in any particular language but flexible enough and willing to learn another.

• iOS build machine setup: problem with certificates

  some background: work with multiple team mates each work on our own MBP I'm setting a build machine that we can git push to in order to generate a build (aim to allow anyone to push to the build machine and then generate an archive, upload to testflight and send on its way) problem: getting my apple developer certificates on the build machine. I installed Lion, XCode, etc and I signed into my developer account through Xcode organizer, provisioning profiles download,etc. but beside each one it says: valid signing identity not found I also download my certificate from the developer.apple.com page, imported it into keychain, etc but no luck. Anyone else have a similar issue? Or maybe hints to fix? Thanks

• Is there much difference between X86 Assembly language on Windows and Linux?

  I'm a complete beginner at Assembly, and my aim is to learn as much as I can to do with Assembly to one day I can reach expert level (I know I'm way off right now, but you never know). My only problem is this: I've got two books which both teach assembly, one on a Linux and the other on Windows. They are Jeff Duntemann's Assembly Language Step By Step (the linux one) and Introduction to 80x86 Assembly Language and Computer Architecture (the windows version). If I want to get the best out of assembly, should I do this on linux and windows? Also, is the syntax the same on Windows and Linux or will I have teach my self again when learning on the other OS( which is my main concern, I want to be able to use assembly on windows and linux).

• What algorithms would suit image colour summarization? [on hold]

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. What image processing algorithms or techniques might help me achieve this?

• Unix as opposed to Windows (Java and C++)

  Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

But how important is the frequency of keywords for SEO optimized copy, the higher the better? Is there a certain percentage to aim at? For example, I currently have copy aimed for a specific keyword. The rate of this keyword is that it makes up 2% of all words. Is this too low? Too high? The higher the better?

Now, I have taken the site down for total redevelopment and redesign. The aim of this question is to know the basics for SEO to be done while redesigning the site. My site will be in ASP.NET MVC 3 and will have main categories, sub categories and sub-sub if any. Then there will be products in those categories. All the data will come from MSSQL DB. The following codes works ok when the player is not jumping, but gets stuck in an object if the player is in the air when they do it.   So, it has been more than 3 years without a single blog post. I wished I could have a decent excuse for it, but in the end, I guess it boils down to laziness and procrastination. :-) Even though I learned a lot in that period (and added a feel tricks to my bag), I couldn’t find the will to sit down and write. I hope all my readers (yes mom and dad, I’m talking to you) have not been disappointed. I will try really hard not to let routine take over. I don’t expect I will be the most active blogger in the community, but hopefully a couple of posts per month is a good target to aim.

  My built-in microphone doesn't work in "record audio" program and in Skype. I'm using ubuntu 11.10 in Toshiba sattelite p505 s8980. No mute button checked I have PulseAudio Volume Control installed currently when aim trying to use record audio program and hear what I record it plays noisy sound not my voice I changed my computer from 'Analog Stereo Output' to 'Analog Stereo Duplex', in both sound setting ( ubuntu ) and in PulseAudio Volume Control no problem in bios and in my windows seven sound worked perfectly and in ubuntu no problem in sound at all i can play music and movies and even in skype i can hear the sounf of who is taking to me ( it's about the microphone only "

This is a fun learning page so I wanted to know as to how will they show up on mobile devices like iPhone and Android smartphones.   In these days there are many projects whose aim is to bring new languages to the browser by compiling them to JavaScript. Among the others one can mention ClojureScript, CoffeScript, Dart, haXe, Emscripten, Amber Smalltalk. I understand that in part the response to this answer depends on the particular project. But, anyway: Have you tried any of them? Are these tentatives suitable for production sites? Should I want to try one of those, what are the downsides I should carefully evaluate? By the way, I expect the answer to be slightly misleading for CoffeeScript, since its semantics is very close to that of JavaScript, so I guess it should be easier to make it work seamlessly with the existing JavaScript ecosystem.
