• How to find corrupted files?

  Some files on my hard drive are corrupted (no worries, nothing system-related, just a junk of data files, mp3 etc.). I found that out when I tried to burn them all to a DVD, the burning application show a message that it cannot read the files as they are corrupted. [This is probably a drive issue, it had happened me once or twice already]. I don't care about recovering them, but I have to determine which ones are corrupted. I cannot check by manually opening them all, as there are thousands of them. Is there any tricky way to check all the files and list the ones that may cause problems when tried to open?

• Howto overlay subtitles onto video using avconv?

  I am using the following script to overlay a dvdsub stream and a video stream; avconv -i input.mkv -i subtitles.sub -filter_complex "[0:v:0][1:s:0]overlay[vid]" -map "[vid]" -s hd720 -sws_flags lanczos -vcodec libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium ~/Desktop/test.mkv I get the following error ; Stream specifier ':s:0' in filtergraph description [0:v:0][1:s:0]overlay[vid] matches no streams. No matter what I do I just cannot get this to work. Can any one tell me how to 'burn-in' subtitles using avconv (or ffmpeg) ?

• Probably the dumbest and poitnless question to ask

  How can I dual boot this with Windows 8? I've tried to burn to a CD, never have a enough memory or the program tells me that the CD isn't writable. So, I want to run from USB. But I never understood how to run the program from the USB, how to download it on to the USB and how to set up the computer to run the USB before the Hard Drive. I am a beginner trying to learn Linux, if any one could help a newbie like me, that would be much appreciated.

  I'm looking for an open source license which grants me additional privileges. Features: Anyone can freely modify, fork, use the code, as long as they make their source changes publicly available. They can use it in other open source projects, but not in closed-source projects. Only I and entities I specifically designate can use the code as part of a closed-source application. I am also exempt from the duty to publish the source code changes. I'm not trying to forbid the commercial use, just to allow myself more flexibility to use the code, while still contributing to open source. I don't want to burn myself by being legally forbidden from using the libraries I wrote in my commercial projects. Large companies use such dual licenses to maintain an open source project, while also selling the premium version. Which licenses of this type are available? What caveats or obstacles exist?

• kernel mem parameter

  As a last resort to my question, I am yet to try the mem parameter of kernel to force it to use the specified amount of RAM. Short Summary - I can only see 3.2GB RAM on a 64bit OS and am not sure ifs a hardware limitation, so wants to try as I found a post on Ubuntuforums. My question is if its ok to play with my resident Ubuntu install or should I be using a live bootable usb? What values do I try (I have 6GB with only 3.2GB being usable) and how to keep it safe? I don't want to burn any of my hardware component at this point of time or make the system unbootable. Running Ubuntu 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

• How long should I keep 301 redirecting pages from a deprecated domain?

  I had an old domain that I have deprecated, but 301 redirected all results from it to my new site. The new site is now receiving a decent amount of traffic, but I don't know if it's 301 redirected from the old site, and doing a site:[old site] still shows several thousand pages indexed. Since all pages from the old site are 301 redirected, will they ever be removed from the index, as long as the old domain name is active? As a rule of thumb, somewhere I got 90 days for any significant site changes. When is it safe to burn the old domain?

• The resulting .iso doesn't work - MultiCD

  Burning a separate CD for each distribution (Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc.) is cumbersome. I found MultiCD which promises me to have a single DVD which can hold several distributions. It is very great tool. Main Problem : The resulting .iso created from multicd doesn't work in a USB pen drive through I haven't tested it in a DVD. Running the .iso through pen drive (I mean booting from pen drive) doesn't work. I cannot even run it in live mode or can install it. Concern : I think if I burn the .iso to a DVD then might it will work. But considering it doesn't work in the pen drive, Will it work on the DVD? So how to fix it? If you know other method to make a multi CD/DVD then please tell me.

  I use Ubuntu 12.04. Today I tried to burn an ISO file in a DVD-R disk using K3b. It used to work, but today, after one and a half minutes, it stopped saying that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device". I searched for a solution, and I found that I had to do something with k3bsetup. I tried to use it, but I had no idea what to do, and I couldn't find a guide, so I checked cdrecord and clicked apply. Now there is another error; it says "cdrecord returns an unknown error! (code 254)". What should I do?

• ISO Live Session from an External Hard Drive?

  Is it possible to use an external hard drive to start a live Ubuntu session? Is having an ISO file as the whole content of the first partition of the device enough? Thank you for reading...! EDIT upon reading the first comment to my original question: If I remember correctly, I COULD run a live session of Oneiric Ocelot somehow. It was not from a CD because I failed to burn one, so it must have been from an ISO file. Still very very confused....

• Installer crash when i tried to install 12.04 on my macbook Pro 7.1

  I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 several times on my macbookpro 7.1 but each times it crashed. I burned a liveCD - desktop 64bits, and launched it. • Reduce weight in healthy way - Day 3

  So I am on Day 3 and what I did today was totally opposite of what I should have done. It seems I will take ever to loose what I had aim for. Today I had ate more than 5000 Calorie, had soda drinks and very oily indian food. On my Day 2 post some one commented that with the number that I have I will loose 1 lbs in a week, but my friends it seems I will gain 5 lbs in a week. I have to straighten my act and really focus on what I want to achieve. I am going to hit the gym and going to burn atleast 500 calorie today.Piece of advice - don't eat fried, oily  and junk food.  Try to have as much as vegetables in your food. I understand its not possible as being a normal person and not a diet freak I know its impossible to be away from Taco or burger and not drink Coke, but to achieve something you have to loose something.

• Server asks for username and password on boot

  I installed the Ubuntu server 12.04 easily, however, when I boot it asks for a username and password. I don't know my previous username or password from Windows XP. I am currently trying to install any version of Ubuntu I have in my arsenal to recover the PC, but all intents so far have failed. They worked on other computers but not on this one, the error I get is No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! I have tried all the solutions found on this site but to no avail. I don't have a Windows Ultimate boot disk and I'm out of CDs to burn. I can, however, make live USBs. Any Suggestions?

• How to convert mkv to dvd or avi

  I have some mkv files, and while Totem plays them perfectly, when i use Devede to burn them to dvd it all gets messed up: the video is ok, but the audio is out of sync. I did see that Devede does write my dixv avi files correctly to disk. So i am thinking what the best way could be to convert my mkv for playback on dvd? I was thinking maybe converting them to avi first? But i did not find a good way for that to happen. What do you suggest?

• Why can't I mount the Ubuntu 12.04 installer ISOs in Mac OS X?

  Over the past few days, I have downloaded both the 32 and 64 bit version of server and desktop to install on an Intel based PC. It is normal from within OS X to double click on an ISO and it will mount the ISO in the finder as well as within disk utility. When I attempt to mount any of the Ubuntu ISOs I downloaded, OS X returns the error message The following disk images couldn't be opened. The reason given for the error is no mountable filesystem. However, I am still able to open the ISO directly from disk utility and burn it to a DVD/CD. What has changed in this release to cause this? Is there something wrong with the current ISOs? The OS X machine I am using is only two weeks old and is having no issues with any other ISO.

• Multiple network installs with cached downloads

  I tend to do lots of Ubuntu installs, and I'd like them to be up to date from the moment I do them, and not have to install a bazillion updates as soon as the install finishes. I'd also like to cache those packages somewhere on a machine on my LAN, so I don't re-download all the packages every time. How easy is this to achieve? Is there a guide somewhere to making this happen? Bonus points if I don't have to burn any CDs or use USB sticks! Edit: I have noticed a lot of guides for PXE booting and would be tempted to set this up but every time I find one they seem to be old/outdated and broken. My home server runs 10.04 LTS.

  We use Jira/Greenhopper for our project planning/tracking. The built-in graphs are great, but when a new issue/story is added during a project, the whole burn-down graph moves up rather than increasing the part of the graph when the issue was added. Ideally I'd like to generate a Mike Cohn-style burndown graph, which shows a hump when new issues are added. Does anyone know of any plugins that support this, or been able to extract this data directly from the database?

• Becoming a professional programmer / software engineer

  This isn't strictly about programming, more about being a programmer, so I'm sorry if its not the right kind of question to ask on this forum (mod, please delete if it isn't) I'm a computer tech in the US Army, and once I'm out I'll have eight years on the job. I'm about to start a degree through an online school (the only way I can get the army to pay for it while I'm still in), and I'm seriously looking at getting a computer science degree. I'm great with computers. I can take one apart and put it back together with my eyes closed. I'm A+ and Network+ certified and I'm getting a couple other CompTIA certs before I get out. I can work Windows as well as anyone on this planet and I'm not terrible with Linux. A job in computers is something I've always wanted. But, aside from being a computer technician, it seems that every job in the field requires programming ability. I like programming as a hobby. I programmed TI BASIC in high school and I'm teaching myself Python, but that's as far as my experience goes. That sort of brings me to my questions: I've always heard that the first language is the most difficult, and once you learn it well then all the others sort of fall into place for you. Is that true? Like, if I spend the next eight months mastering Python, will I pretty much be able to pick up at least fair proficiency in any other OO language within a month of studying it or whatever? How easy is it to burn out? the biggest thing I'm afraid of is just burning out on programming. I can go all day long if I'm programming strictly for my own personal desire, but I can imagine it being really easy to burn out after a few years of programming to deadlines and certain specifications. Especially if its a big project involving a dozen different designers. From what I told you about myself, would I already be qualified to work as a regular technician (geek squad type or maybe running a computer repair shop). Is Python a good base to learn from? I've heard that it makes you hate other languages because they feel more convoluted when learning, but also that its a great beginner language. If you're a professional programmer, did you have any of the same fears? Would you recommend that I stick to computer repair and Python rather than try to get into corporate programming? • how to recognize video codec of a file with ffmpeg

  I have often problems reading AVI file with my TV dvd player if they are not divx or xvid (DX50,i.e., is not readable). I'd like to make a fast script to recognize the video codec of these files before burn it on cdrom/dvd. The command : ffmpeg -i file.avi give the "container" of the video stream (mpeg4,mpeg2,etc), not the codec. Any hint? Thanks
