  • What's the difference between these Intel things?

    My head still spins with the various Intel "things" that may (or may not) need installing/configuring/yaddayadda'ing: Intel Rapid Storage Technology (is this driver? a software manager/package?), Intel Chipset (i.e., Intel INF Update Utility, Intel RST OROM, Intel RST driver, Intel Matrix Manager, etc. I think I have a basic understanding that the OROM is the low-level BIOS "driver", which communicates with the higher-level RST driver (in Windows). But what's the Chipset Installation software? What's the INF installation/update software? I'm confused as to what the other pieces are (or why there are so many to begin with). And as for a practical matter -- I'm wanting to upgrade my BIOS with a recent Intel OROM included, and then also update the Intel RST drivers in Windows -- BUT, as for the Windows side of things, I don't know what I should uninstall -- the Intel Chipset installer thing (through official uninstaller), Intel RST Manager, finding the individual Intel devices in Device Manager and right-clicking-uninstall/deleting, etc.

  • Do superuser things with normal user

    I want to secure the SSH access to my server. One thing I read everywhere is to disable the root user login. To still have access via SSH I created another user via sudo adduser john How can I still do root things with this account? sudo command asks for a password of the user but gives john not in sudoer file. Action will be reported. When I use su I log in as root which I'm going to disable. How can I stil do root things with the normal account john?

    As a web hoster, it is very easy to notice the large amounts of exploit/abuse attempts done on my servers. Out of curiosity, how often are these attempts done on the average user? I'm assuming almost all of them are prevented just by simple security protocols in place by their browsers, local network, etc. How many attempts, on average, are committed against a single user daily through any method? (email, internet, downloads, etc.)? If known, what percentage of these things are blocked by the average users security? I tried googling but I was having a hard time getting the right search terms together.

  • Getting 'choice' to work in Highline Ruby Gem without error and getting variable from it

    I'm having a couple of problems using Highline in Ruby, and trying to get the choice element, detailed here, to work. At the moment the following code produces the error "error: wrong number of arguments (0 for 1). Use --trace to view backtrace" How do I get the variable out of choice? At the moment I have the 'do' setup, but I have no idea about how to get the variable the user has chosen out and into a variable for use elsewhere.     I've just been working through a database looking for log tables which can have data aged out, or deleted if you like. I was using SSMS for this and used the default right click select top 1000 rows as a quick view of the data. Establishing that I had unwanted data in such a table I deleted based upon getdate()-30 , nearly 7,000 rows deleted, I then highlighted the top 1000 rows query and re-ran query, surpisingly I still got the same result set with 2006 dates in it, and 1,000 rows. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it.   • when connected to vpn, can't access certain things

    my companies vpn is not a standard windows vpn. It uses Juniper Networks and it intalls locally something called "Host Checker" prior to allowing me to connect. I have noticed 2 things that I can't access while on vpn. etrade.com - no idea why this specific website, but I can't get to it, maybe https? use of my magik jack - I'm assuming this is some sort of a port conflict issue. if im on a call when i connect, i lose all reception. if i try to make a call after conected, ic an't even get it to dial. Can anyone tell me how I would even begin to debug this. I expect if I call the help desk they won't be much help, but if I can tell them the specific problems of conflicts, maybe I have a chance of them working with me to get it working.

Why are there two entries for the database AQUA? Why is there a entry with a blank name? Should I worry about any of those? What should I do for each specific case? Is it safe to just delete the ones that should not be there, after backing up?

    Today I was bitten again by "Mutable default arguments" after many years. I usually don't use mutable default arguments unless needed but I think with time I forgot about that, and today in the application I added tocElements=[] in a pdf generation function's argument list and now 'Table of Content' gets longer and longer after each invocation of "generate pdf" :) My question is what other things should I add to my list of things to MUST avoid? 1 Mutable default arguments 2 import modules always same way e.g. 'from y import x' and 'import x' are totally different things actually they are treated as different modules see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1459236/module-reimported-if-imported-from-different-path 3 Do not use range in place of lists because range() will become an iterator anyway, so things like this will fail, so wrap it by list myIndexList = [0,1,3] isListSorted = myIndexList == range(3) # will fail in 3.0 isListSorted = myIndexList == list(range(3)) # will not same thing can be mistakenly done with xrange e.g myIndexList == xrange(3). 4 Catching multiple exceptions try: raise KeyError("hmm bug") except KeyError,TypeError: print TypeError It prints "hmm bug", though it is not a bug, it looks like we are catching exceptions of type KeyError,TypeError but instead we are catching KeyError only as variable TypeError, instead use try: raise KeyError("hmm bug") except (KeyError,TypeError): print TypeError

  • Hitting the Done button does not dismiss the View of a MPMoviePlayerController on OS 4.0 beta

    Hi All Hope someone can help me on this, on the old OS version 3.0 and down , hitting the done button one playing a Video would automatically dismiss the view, but now since we have to control the view appearance, hitting the Done just stops the movie but does not dismiss the view, I tried to check if it was linked to any notification and found that each time the Done button was hit, MPMoviePlayerPlaybackStateDidChangeNotification is triggered the problem is that the same notification is received for any change of state pausing /playing... so dismissing the view when MPMoviePlayerPlaybackStateDidChangeNotification is triggered is not an option. does anyone have an answer for this problem Thx for your help

  • iPhone Text entry with completion and DONE button (not search)

    Using iPhone SDK 3.0, I wish to allow text entry with (optional) completion options that appear as typing is occurring, i.e. also allowing freeformat entry. As such I am using a UISearchBar (which has the text change events) and a UISearchDisplayController to present options. The problems is I want the DONE button to say DONE and not SEARCH, however I cannot find a way to set that. Clearly I feel I am missing something, or Interface Builder of the SDK API would have some property to set. I have seen other apps (in the store) that have achieved the result I want (free format entry, completion, DONE button) so maybe there is an alternative approach I am missing.     Hello, I have used a bit of Android code to override the "Done" button in my EditText field: myEditField.setOnEditorActionListener(new TextView.OnEditorActionListener() { @Override public boolean onEditorAction(TextView v, int actionId, KeyEvent event) { if (actionId == EditorInfo.IME_ACTION_DONE) { mySubroutine(); return true; } return false; } }); Activating the field calls up the keyboard, and pressing "Done" evaluates mySubroutine() successfully. However, the keyboard no longer goes away when I press "Done". How do I restore this default behaviour to the routine?
