  • How do I increase the touchpad sensitivity on Acer Aspire One 532h?

    - by Yossi Farjoun
I got a cheap netbook and put ubuntu on it without even booting into the windows it came with. I am now slightly regretting it since the trackpad is very annoying, it only registers when I press quite hard on it, and even then the motion is so slow that I must drag me poor finger 3 times to get the pointer to move up or down that tiny screen. OK. enough rant. now business: I went into the setting and increase sensitivity and acceleration to high. No difference. the behaviour did not change at all. So now my questions are: Is this a hardware problem? Is there a program I can run to see what input the trackpad is receiving? so I know if it can, in theory, read the light touch and not only the heavy, sandpaper-your-fingertips-off touch? is there some manual setting that the system might not be setting correctly and which I could change from the terminal?

  • Move Camera Freely Around Object While Looking at It

    - by Alex_Hyzer_Kenoyer
I've got a 3D model loaded (a planet) and I have a camera that I want to allow the user to move freely around it. I have no problem getting the camera to orbit the planet around either the x or y axis. My problem is when I try to move the camera on a different axis I have no idea how to go about doing it. I am using OpenGL on Android with the libGDX library. I want the camera to orbit the planet in the direction that the user swipes their finger on the screen.

  • Custom trackpad mapping doesn't work for all applications

    - by picheto
I found out I could invert my trackpad scrolling, so as to work more like the OS X "natural scrolling", which I liked better. To do that, I run the following command on startup: xinput set-button-map 11 1 2 3 5 4 7 6 Where 11 is the touchpad id (found with xinput list and xinput test 11). This inverts the vertical and horizontal two-finger scrolling, and works fine in Terminal, Chrome, Document Viewer, etc. However, it doesn't work in Nautilus and some applications such as the Update Manager, as they keep the usual mapping. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Why does this mapping work for some applications but not for others? I know there is software I can download to do the same, but this method seemed "cleaner". Thanks

  • Master Typing Productivity when Programming/SysAdmin [closed]

    - by Hartator
I try to learn how to type fast and have managed to learn a lot. I am quite good at typing english text now. I do a lot of programmation though and if QWERTY seems fitted for english text, it doesn't seem fitted to type Ruby, Python, Javascript, Command Line or C++... I have read plenty of articles and if I respect their guidelines/tips, I am using a lot my right pinky specially to type []{}|\;:'"/?=+ enter delete. As you can see this symbols are the ones which are the most used when you are programming and we are using only one weak finger to reach them. Am I learning wrong? Is there is a way to be more productive? (I don't really want to switch to DVORAK) Have you some experiences/tips to share regarding this issue? • DIY Touch Screen Mod Makes Regular Gloves Smartphone-friendly

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Smartphone-friendly winter gloves are expensive (and often ugly). Skip shelling out for store-bought gloves when, armed with a needle and thread, you can turn any gloves into smartphone-friendly ones. Over at Popular Science, Taylor Kubota shares the simple trick: 1. Order silver-plated nylon thread (silver conducts electricity). This can be difficult to find in stores, but major online retailers carry it. 2. Pick a pair of gloves to modify. Although leather works, it’s harder to push a needle through. 3. Stitch the figure of a star or other solid shape onto the glove’s index finger with the thread, making sure it will contact both the touchscreen and your skin. • making "xwacom set" changes permanent

    - by Philippe
On my Thinkpad X220 Tablet the touch-finger works flawlessly but the pen is terribly miscalibrated. The calibration tool in System settings - Wacom tablet does not work. Instead, whenever I wan't to use the pen I first need to sudo xsetwacom set 'Wacom ISDv4 E6 Pen stylus' Area 0 0 27760 15690 These changes do not remain permanent. That is, after every reboot they are gone. How can I make the change permanent - I'm not looking for a startup scrip, I'd like to set the right area once for all. Any idea?

  • Gnome/X logs off immediately after login -- which logfiles are relevant?

    - by joebuntu
I've been tinkering with fingerprint-gui as well as X/xrandr resolution settings. When I start my machine, it boots up normally. As soon as X and gnome have finished starting, it logs me off automatically and brings me back to the gdm login prompt with the user list. Then I am, however, able to log in using "Ubuntu Desktop Fail-safe". I've checked the list of start-up applications, but everything seems fine there. I can't yet put my finger on what exactly might be responsible for this: X, gnome or some messed up pam.d settings. So far I've checked /var/logs/X11/xorg.0.log, /var/logs/auth.log and ~/.xsession-errors. In addition, I don't quite seem to understand the "interplay" between X, GDM, GNOME, GNOME-policykit, PAM.d and all that. Are there any other relevant log files that could point me to what's broken? • My boss decided to add a "person to blame" field to every bug report. How can I convince him that it's a bad idea?

    - by MK_Dev
In one of the latest "WTF" moves, my boss decided that adding a "Person To Blame" field to our bug tracking template will increase accountability (although we already have a way of tying bugs to features/stories). My arguments that this will decrease morale, increase finger-pointing and would not account for missing/misunderstood features reported as bug have gone unheard. What are some other strong arguments against this practice that I can use? Is there any writing on this topic that I can share with the team and the boss? I find this sort of culture unacceptable to work in but want to try and change it before jumping ship. Any input is appreciated.

  • Looking for feedback on design pattern for simple 2D environment

    - by Le Mot Juiced
I'm working in iOS. I am trying to make a very simple 2D environment where there are some basic shapes you can drag around with your finger. These shapes should interact in various ways when dropped on each other, or when single-tapped versus double-tapped, etc. I don't know the name for the design pattern I'm thinking of. Basically, you have a bunch of arrays named after attributes, such as "double-tappable" or "draggable" or "stackable". You assign these attributes to the shapes by putting the shapes in the arrays. So, if there's a double-tap event, the code gets the location of it, then iterates through the "double-tappable" array to see if any of its members are in that location. And so on: every interactive event causes a scan through the appropriate array or arrays. It seems like that should work, but I'm wondering if there's a better pattern for the purpose.

  • Should I drawing directly on CCLayer or CCSprite?

    - by einverne
Now I am a little confused in my cocos2d-x cpp project. I want to draw lines with user's finger touch. Following the screenshot of a CCScene: In the screen, there are two squares. I want show an animation in the first square and let the second one draw lines with user touch. Now these two squares are CCSprite. And I can draw dots in the second one on the CCLayer. But I am little confused that I should draw lines on the Sprite or on the Layer. Or are there other ways to organize the code?

  • Does the direction of storage make us bad data citizens?

    - by simonsabin
My career started at a company where we hardly had email, the network was a 10base2 affair with cables running all around the office. You used floppy disks and the thought of a GB of data was absurd. You had to look after every byte and only keep what you really needed. Whilst the cost of the spinning disks gradually falls the cost and size of flash storage continues to plummet. The new Crucial SSD is £380 for 1TB I can now keep 128GB of data on a SD card the size of my finger. It only costs...(read more)

  • How can I fix a shaky touchpad cursor in Ubuntu on my hp pavilion laptop?

    - by Vindiggity
I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and it works great, except after the initial reboot my touchpad cursor shakes violently when I hold my finger completely still on the pad.It works fine with a regular mouse plugged in. I couldn't find much scouting around the internet except that it might be that my touchpad doesn't have any dead zones? I am very new to Ubuntu and am fairly computer savvy, but I don't know a lot about using the terminal or anything like that, so if you could dumb down a fix for this as much as possible for me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  • Speed up UIPageViewController

    - by Jack Humphries
I have a UIPageViewController with several pages. Each page is the same view controller, but the page number is kept track of and the correct page of a PDF is shown. The problem is that each PDF page needs to be loaded and drawn before the curl effect works (you slide your finger across the screen and nothing happens until loaded). Any ideas on how to speed this up or preload the next page? Thanks for your help.

  • how to programatically set the current page for UIPageControl?

    - by RexOnRoids
I have 3 "pages" (page 0, page 1, page 2) in a UIScrollView that are snapped to by finger swipes. There is a UIPageControl there too. The UIScrollView starts off presenting page 0. What I want to do is present page 3 FIRST sometimes. How can I do this programatically. Simply setting currentPage (of UIPageControl) to the page number does nothing by the way.

  • Stop UIWebView from "bouncing" vertically ?

    - by Brad Parks
Hi there; Does anyone know how to stop a UIWebView from bouncing vertically? I mean when a user touches their iphone screen, drags their finger downwards, and the webview shows a blank spot above the web page I had loaded? I've looked at the following possible solutions, but none of them worked for me: http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/996-turn-off-scrolling-bounces-uiwebview.html http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=619534 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/173786/how-do-i-stop-a-uiscrollview-from-bouncing-horizontally Thanks! • UIResponder Delays

    - by Dylan Copeland
I have a UIView subclass that overrides UIResponder's touchesMoved: message. I've noticed that when I swipe my finger very quickly across the UIView, my touchesMoved: message only gets called every so often and not constantly getting messaged. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • didSelectRowAtIndexPath does not get called when scrolling and selecting a cell

    - by Falcon
Hi all, It seems when I scroll my table view that if I select a cell while the table view is still scrolling, didSelectRowAtIndexPath doesn't get called. It works fine when the table view is still. Any ideas on why this might be? Also, is there a way that didSelectRowAtIndexPath can be called on press down? It seems it gets called after my finger/cursor is raised off of the cell. Thanks,

  • Any simple shape recognition libraries for Java?

    - by Phil
I am working on a on-screen keyboard for Android, and I need to recognize starting points, turning points and end points of lines drawn by the user on the keyboard. A simple straightening function would be nice, as it is difficult to draw a perfectly straight line even with a stylus, not to mention finger-only touchscreens today. What I am trying to write is something like Swype. Any good libraries that I can use or make reference to?

  • Where can I find an iPhone OpenGL ES Example that responds to touch?

    - by Jamey McElveen
I would like to find an iPhone OpenGL ES Example that responds to touch. Ideally it would meet these requirements: Displays a 3D object in the center of the screen like a cube Maps a texture to the cube surfaces Should move the camera around the cube as you drag your finger Should zoom the camera in and out on the cube by pinching Optionally has a background behind the cube that wraps around the back of the camera.(for example this could create the effect of the cube being in space) Has anyone seen one or more examples that can do these or at least render the cube with the texture?

  • iPhone mapkit: selecting a location on the map

    - by Tristan
Hi there, I'd like to be able to select a location on a MKMapView. Ideally the user would be able to place their finger on a pin, drag it around the map, and then let go above there area they wish to place it. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any clever ideas how this could be achieved?

  • UIControlEventTouchDragExit only fires ~100 pixels out

    - by Jonathan
Im trying to "get" when a finger/touch leaves a UIButton in objective C for iphone. I was told in another answer to use UIControlEventTouchDragExit however this event only fires when the touch gets about 100 pixels away from the button, whereas I would like it to be immediate. The apple docs say that goes according to the bounds however my understand is the bounds and the frame are the same unless you rotate the UIbutton (or whatever)
