  • Preferred OS for hosting Tomcat servlet container

    I know that I'm taking a risk, pitting the differing OS religions against each other, but I would like professional opinions about hosting a servlet container. In my case the container is set, we will be using Tomcat. But what is in question is the hosting operating system. We have administrators experienced in Windows Server 2003. We have developers experienced in Solaris, OSX, and Linux. There is no warring between these groups, just a question of who will ramp up through the learning curve necessary to use the OS that they are unfamiliar with. So given all the cooperative spirit, we are struggling with how to find the most efficient path. I had already cross-posted this question here.

  • Partial Trust in WPF 4

    I've started a new project in WPF 4 (.NET 4) and trying to see if I can run it in xbap mode. I need to run the application in Full Trust with the new mode made available in .NET 4 which asks the end user if the full trust application should be run. I've set the "Security" mode to "Full Trust" application, and it builds just fine. When I run it, an exception is thrown and IE error message shows the following error. Any ways around it??   • ObjectContext.SaveChanges() fails with SQL CE

    I am creating a model-first Entity Framework 4 app that uses SQL CE as its data store. All is well until I call ObjectContext.SaveChanges() to save changes to the entities in the model. At that point, SaveChanges() throws a System.Data.UpdateException, with an inner exception message that reads as follows: Server-generated keys and server-generated values are not supported by SQL Server Compact. I am completely puzzled by this message. Any idea what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks.     Hello so I have been trying to get my website to run on mono (on ubuntu server) and I have followed these tutorials almost to the letter: However when my directory is not blank fastcgi logs reveal this: Notice Beginning to receive records on connection.   • File I/O OS handling

    This isn't a direct coding question but more of a OS handling mechanism. I was reading somebody's previous question regarding C# and file handling. Apparently C# was throwing an exception regarding a file being locked when trying to access this. So my question is, does C# use an internal lock to handle file I/O between processes, or does the OS use some type of mutual exclusion for file I/O? From what I learned about operating systems, well at least unix, is that the OS doesn't implement any type of mutual exclusion for processes trying to access the same file.

  • How to draw unlimited FPS on Mac OS X with OpenGL?

    I d'like to draw as many frames as possible with OpenGL on Mac OS X to measure the performance on different scenes. What I've tried so far: Using a CVDisplayLink that has NSOpenGLCPSwapInterval set to 0, so it does not sync with the Display. But with that it's still stuck at max 60FPS Using normal -drawRect: with a timer that fires 1/1000sec and calls -setNeedsDisplay: Still not more than 60FPS Same as 2. but I call -display in the timer callback. With that I get the FPS above 60, but it still stops at 100-110 FPS. Although the frame rate should easily be at 10times more. Andy idea how I can really draw as many frames as possible?

  • mod_mono 'Service Temporarily Unavailable' issue

    I've deployed an ASP.NET web application on a Linux (Debian) server running Apache 2.2 and mod_mono 1.9 It's working well, however Mono occasionally segfaults and uses the entire CPU which causes the website to stop working and display 'Service Temporarily Unavailable' Killing mono fixes it, but obviously this isn't a good solution. This tab shows you the local file system associated with the instance and any shared storage libraries mounted by Ops Center. More detailed information about file system storage is available under the Analytics tab under the sub-tab named Charts. Here, you can select and display the individual mount points of an OS, and export the utilization data if desired: In this example, the OS instance has a basic root file partition and several NFS directories. Each file system mount point can be independently chosen for display in the Ops Center chart. File Systems and Incident  Reporting Every asset managed by Ops Center has a "monitoring policy", which determines what represents a reportable issue with the asset. The policy is made up of a bunch of monitoring rules, where each rule describes An attribute to monitor The conditions which represent an issue The level or levels of severity for the issue When the conditions are met, Ops Center sends a notification and creates an incident. By default, OS instances have three monitoring rules associated with file systems: File System Reachability: Triggers an incident if a file system is not reachable NAS Library Status: Triggers an incident for a value of "WARNING" or "DEGRADED" for a NAS-based file system File System Used Space Percentage: Triggers an incident when file system utilization grows beyond defined thresholds You can view these rules in the Monitoring tab for an OS: Of course, the default monitoring rules is that they apply to every file system associated with an OS instance. As a result, any issue with NAS accessibility or disk utilization will trigger an incident. This can cause incidents for file systems to be reported multiple times if the same shared storage is used by many assets, as shown in this screen shot: Depending on the level of control you'd like, there are a number of ways to fine tune incident reporting. Note that any changes to an asset's monitoring policy will detach it from the default, creating a new monitoring policy for the asset. If you'd like, you can extract a monitoring policy from an asset, which allows you to save it and apply the customized monitoring profile to other OS assets. Solution #1: Modify the Reporting Thresholds In some cases, you may want to modify the basic conditions for incident reporting in your file system. The changes you make to a default monitoring rule will apply to all of the file systems associated with your operating system. Selecting the File Systems Used Space Percentage entry and clicking the "Edit Alert Monitoring Rule Parameters" button opens a pop-up dialog which allows you to modify the rule. The first screen lets you decide when you will check for file system usage, and how long you will wait before opening an incident in Ops Center. By default, Ops Center monitors continuously and reports disk utilization issues which exist for more than 15 minutes. The second screen lets you define actual threshold values. By default, Ops Center opens a Warning level incident is utilization rises above 80%, and a Critical level incident for utilization above 95% Solution #2: Disable Incident Reporting for File System If you'd rather not report file system incidents, you can disable the monitoring rules altogether. In this case, you can select the monitoring rules and click the "Disable Alert Monitoring Rule(s)" button to open the pop-up confirmation dialog. Like the first solution, this option affects all file system monitoring. It allows you to completely disable incident reporting for NAS library status or file system space consumption. Solution #3: Create New Monitoring Rules for Specific File Systems If you'd like to have the greatest flexibility when monitoring file systems, you can create entirely new rules. Clicking the "Add Alert Monitoring Rule" (the icon with the green plus sign) opens a wizard which allows you to define a new rule.  This rule will be based on a threshold, and will be used to monitor operating system assets. We'd like to add a rule to track disk utilization for a specific file system - the /nfs-guest directory. To do this, we specify the following attribute FileSystemUsages.name=/nfs-guest.usedSpacePercentage The value of name in the attribute allows us to define a specific NFS shared directory or file system... in the case of this OS, we could have chosen any of the values shown in the File Systems Utilization chart at the beginning of this article. usedSpacePercentage lets us define a threshold based on the percentage of total disk space used. There are a number of other values that we could use for threshold-based monitoring of FileSystemUsages, including freeSpace freeSpacePercentage totalSpace usedSpace usedSpacePercentage The final sections of the screen allow us to determine when to monitor for disk usage, and how long to wait after utilization reaches a threshold before creating an incident. The next screen lets us define the threshold values and severity levels for the monitoring rule: If historical data is available, Ops Center will display it in the screen. Clicking the Apply button will create the new monitoring rule and active it in your monitoring policy. If you combine this with one of the previous solutions, you can precisely define which file systems will generate incidents and notifications. For example, this monitoring policy has the default "File System Used Space Percentage" rule disabled, but the new rule reports ONLY on utilization for the /nfs-guest directory.   • Loading any MVC page fails with the error "An item with the same key has already been added."

    I am having an intermittent issue that is appearing on one server only, and is causing all MVC pages to fail to load with the error "An item with the same key has already been added."   • Figuring out the IIS Version for a given OS in .NET Code

    Here's an odd requirement: I need to figure out what version of IIS is available on a given machine in order to take specific configuration actions when installing an IIS based application. I build several configuration tools for application configuration and installation and depending on which version of IIS is available on IIS different configuration paths are taken. For example, when dealing with XP machine you can't set up an Application Pool for an application because XP (IIS 5.1) didn't support Application pools. Configuring 32 and 64 bit settings are easy in IIS 7 but this didn't work in prior versions and so on. Along the same lines I saw a question on the AspInsiders list today, regarding a similar issue where somebody needed to know the IIS version as part of an ASP.NET application prior to when the Request object is available. So it's useful to know which version of IIS you can possibly expect. This should be easy right? But it turns there's no real easy way to detect IIS on a machine. There's no registry key that gives you the full version number - you can detect installation but not which version is installed. The easiest way: Request.ServerVariables["SERVER_SOFTWARE"] The easiest way to determine IIS version number is if you are already running inside of ASP.NET and you are inside of an ASP.NET request. You can look at Request.ServerVariables["SERVER_SOFTWARE"] to get a string like Microsoft-IIS/7.5 returned to you. It's a cinch to parse this to retrieve the version number. This works in the limited scenario where you need to know the version number inside of a running ASP.NET application. Unfortunately this is not a likely use case, since most times when you need to know a specific version of IIS when you are configuring or installing your application. The messy way: Match Windows OS Versions to IIS Versions Since Version 5.x of IIS versions of IIS have always been tied very closely to the Operating System. Meaning the only way to get a specific version of IIS was through the OS - you couldn't install another version of IIS on the given OS. Microsoft has a page that describes the OS version to IIS version relationship here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224609 In .NET you can then sniff the OS version and based on that return the IIS version. This code goes only back to IIS 5 - anything before that is not something you possibly would want to have running. :-) Note that this is updated through Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2.     For some really weird reason when i set the .Enabled property to false on a simple text box on a small GUI, it fires a radio buttons OnClick event and its causing lots of problems.     Hi, How do I change the default screensaver in Mac OS X using shell. I am writing a script to customize computers that I need to distribute. In particular I would like them all to have the same default screensaver. How could I change this in a script? So far I have done the following: I have a com.apple.screensaver.default.plist file with the screensaver settings I want in it, and in the script I copy it to /Users/guest/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.${UUID}.plist where UUID is the relevant value. I have modified /System/Library/Frameworks/Screensaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist to have the screensaver I want as the default settings. But when I open Screensaver settings in System Preferences after running the script, the default screensaver is Flurry! What can I do to make this work? Thanks, ChilisWorld

    Is there a Linux equivalent to the Mac OS X command fs_usage? According to the man page it does the following: "report system calls and page faults related to filesystem activity in real-time". I suppose one option would be to use strace and filter the data, however the fs_usage command allows all the processes running on the system to be "traced" at the same time.   • System Monitoring service - Hosted

    I'm looking for a system monitoring service, a bit like New Relic, but for more the system itself than the ruby side of things. i.e. something like Zabbix, but hosted like New Relic. I wont something I can just drop an 'agent' on the servers, and then do all the config and monitoring and notifications on a nice slick 3rd party system. So essential Zabbix Meats New Relic meets Pingdom. Any ideas?

  • Any good reason to keep 32-bit desktop OS's

    Server software has been 64-bit only for a while now (Since Server 2008 R2 for Windows, even earlier for Exchange and Sharepoint) and even Ubuntu are pushing you away from 32-bit versions for their server OS's. But is there any good, quantifiable reason to keep a 32-bit desktop operating system maintained? We're preparing our Windows 8 images for the (unfortunate?) few that will be early adopters. The majority of our desktop computers have 4gb or less of RAM, but I would love to not have to bother supporting a 32-bit flavoured operating system any more. Any reason why I should?

I need a simple program to manage my WIFI and virtual private netwok connection --- and found the NetworkManager. The problem is that the NetworkManager is a system-tray icon: I cannot see it or click on it in my fwlm windows manager. Hence, I ask: Is there any way to start the NetworkManager directly without using the system tray?

The virtual server there is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, which is also Domain Controller. I've tried to repair Windows but there is no restore point, and using the command line. I've tried the sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR /OFFWINDIR command, but I got the error Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
