How can I recover these files from my windows xp partition? If there's isn't a way to do this from windows, what's the best way to do it in ubuntu? I'd prefer a graphical interface if that's possible. I appreciate the help.

  I've got an external USB disk running btrfs. I use it for backups, and each time I do a backup I take a snapshot.   I upgraded from 9.04 to 10.10 a couple of days ago, and things are really messed up - X is crashing constantly. Since then, I had an application segfault for no reason, when I was debugging, I found that it was strlen() that was causing the segfault (pointing to libc being the problem)! Upon investigation, I found that it was because I had a bad version of gcc and binutils installed in /usr/bin/local; I removed it, recompiled the application, and it no longer crashes. Now, looking at my logs, I see that X is also crashing due to libc.   Yesterday I had two NTFS partitions on my drive. One on which Windows 7 was installed (C Drive) and the other contained my data (D Drive). During Ubuntu installation I choose to install Ubuntu and erase my existing OS. When Ubuntu installed, I was shocked to see no partition. All my data was gone.   So I was messing around with tasksel to install LAMP. Foolishly I unchecked the ubuntu-desktop item. About 25% through the process I realized it is removing my desktop components. So I closed the terminal window, but now maybe something went wrong. Many default applications are gone and I can't even boot into the desktop. I have a separate home folder so I don't really have to worry about data, but I did install a lot of other software which would be gone if I take reformat and reinstall. So is there a way to recover the desktop from a live CD?

  Yesterday while upgrading from 11.4 to 11.10, due to power cut my system crashed. Ubuntu is unable to boot. While booting I get two options in grub, one is for recovery mode and the other is for normal ubuntu booting (and others are also thr for mem check and booting to windows). When I try to boot it normally, it pauses booting while displaying ' Checking battery statues' . Though i am not using a laptop, I am on a desktop. And In recovery mode the menu has 4 options - resume boot, fsck , remount and root ( to goto shell prompt) . If I go to shell and type ' apt-get dist upgrade' , it shows - W: not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock E:unable to write to /var/cache/apt E:The package lists or status files could not be parsed or opened. Please instruct me to recover from this situation.

First I tried to install upgradation from the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alternate cd while ubuntu 11.10 is on, but every time I got a error message and I couldn't upgrade either thro desktop or through terminal. Then I tried Ubuntu 12.04 LTS i386 DVD the boot option to DVD, I tried to upgrade from existing 11.10 to 12.04 LTS Option, then Upgrading Installation started well and finally got a message Installation completed successfully, Asked for reboot, I rebooted then I have hot a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Login and I logged on, I have got a big shock that there is everything washed away in the home folders ( all datas, Music collections and vedios etc), all the application installed early in 11.10 were gone nothing left. Now I have got only 12.04 LTS, even It is asking for me to update around 350 mb through net connection. How It was a crazy Ubuntu, It is not a up-gradation, new installation is not it? I loosed everthing, at the end I got the same desktop screen like Ubuntu 11.10. Anybody knows about what gone wrong and if any possibility to recover my datas? Please help me. I want to Know that which method is stable to Upgrade existing Ubunt11.10

• All files gone after running fsck. How can I recover my files?

  I am a newbie in Linux. So this is my story I installed Ubuntu server 10.04lts. It worked great for many months, until today i decided to run fsck on the system partition and although it warned me, I kept pressing yes and now it will only boot into grub prompt. So i read some article and tried grub reinstall. But before performing grub reinstall, i decided to run fsck again from Ubuntu 10.04 lts for desktop live CD. The fsck painfully passes, now my drive is recognized as ext4 system and I am able to mount it again. However, all i can see is just boot directory and lost&found. I tried to perform grub reinstalling by doing grup-install stuff, now my grub is still not loading right, my files are missing, and the weird thing is that the amount I found used by boot and lost n found is only 5gb and the amount used in he hdd is 8 gb. So my files must be somewhere in the hdd. Is there any sinple way maybe a windows tool or something yo recover my files? I only need to retrieve my database backup and everything else can go. I am freaking out here. Please help.

  I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 as dual-boot and on the same 500GB HDD. I have partitioned the drive into NTFS file system from Windows before I installed Edubuntu 12.04 in the remaining free space. Now, there is a drive(G:) accessible through Windows and has few folders. I boot into Edubuntu and create a folder "LinTor" and download movies and few software from torrentz. Before I download, it showed 49GB free out of 62GB. After all the downloads it showed 31GB free out of 62GB. Then I boot into Windows and I couldn't find this "LinTor" folder. I wondered that might be happening as I hibernate Edubuntu (using sudo pm-hibernate) and then boot into Windows. I then create another folder in the same drive(G:) with the name "001" to check if this was accessible from Edubuntu. Now I reboot into Edubuntu to find that "LinTor" folder has disappeared and "001" folder wasn't showing up either. Surprisingly, the drive size still shows 31GB free out of 62GB but when I check it from Windows, it shows 49GB free of 62GB. There is one thing I would like to mention. When I was trying to unmount the NTFS drive(G:) from Edubuntu before booting into Windows, it prompted me with this message: Do you want to empty the trash before you unmount the drive? Once the trash is emptied the data is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Please help me understand what could be the problem and how do I recover the missing folder?

  I'm running Google Chrome 5.0.307.11 (Official Build 39572) beta on Debian Linux (lenny) kernel version 2.6.26-2-686. The machine is a laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad X300) and sometimes it freezes, usually shortly after wakeup from sleep. The only cure is the power button, but when I restart my Google Chrome web browser after such an event, Settings on the Options menu revert to defaults. Chrome removes all the extensions from ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Extensions, leaving me with no extensions. The set of "pages last open" is lost. I'd love to know how to poke at the file system in order to recover any or all of this information, especially my extensions. It is a pain to re-do everything by hand each time. How can I recover Google Chrome's extensions and settings after a Linux crash?

Is there any where to recover deleted files and directories? I suppose, that theoretically it should be possible. Some software can look through the list of installed packages, check presence of files in file system and recover or reinstall corrupted packages if their file are missing in /usr/local.

  Software used to backup: EMC / Legato Networker legato server : windows legato clients: same hardware (2 years ago fedora something , now ubuntu ) Trying to recover from an old client, which is no longer available. So this is the thing. On 07/20/2008 we backed up a samba server(fedora something) to a tape , setting 1 year as browse policy and retention policy. Now this tape is recyclable. We took down the dns name. We deleted the legato client configuration. That legato client was reinstalled and is doing other stuff on ubuntu 10.04, with a different name but same ip. Now, 2 years and some month later #### Now we need to recover a folder from 2008 backup, on the fedora-samba-server. First thing, legato does not show the client name because the config was deleted. We create it again. We just set the old dns back on track, pointing the same ip, where the old server was, same MAC address ;). We created a new 'old client configuration' pointing to the new server. (different legato ip for client "I suppose" ) The ssid where the needed folder is on 2 tapes, 20 and 22. The index for that backup is on tape 21. We put this tapes on the jukebox (IBMT4000) -- not important for the issue -- All three tapes expired its browsable and recoverable time. So they are on recyclable. We get the clone id from the ssid with following command: mminfo -avot -q "ssid=<ssid>" -r cloneid We set the tapes to notrecyclable nsrmm -S <ssid>/<cloneid> -o notrecyclable We change the retention for the tapes for a future date nsrmm -S <ssid> -e 01/20/2011 We check the dates are correct : mminf -avV -q "ssid=<ssid>" -r ssbrowse(26),ssretent(26),savetime So far its OK. We close the terminal. Restart the server, just for being sure. Finally, we recover the index for that ssid where the folder should be. nsrck -L7 -t "07/20/2008" oldservername.domain.org There, we open the Networker User, select the server, select the old client as source, select the new client as destination.   I was trying to replace the power supply in my desktop PC and ended up physically damaging the data connection from the hard drive to the motherboard. The plastic shelf for the copper prongs on the hard drive broke into the cable. Here is a picture of my handy work: Picture of damage I went to Best Buy Geek Squad to discuss my options and they said that they will need to send it to the recover center it could cost anywhere between $250 to $1600 USD to recover the data out the hard drive Is this reasonable for data recovery from a phyiscally damaged hard drive? Are there any other options I can explore? I am going to talk to the data doctors to see what my options are.

• I just deleted "/bin". What's the best way to recover?

  I just ran (not on purpose!) rm -rf /bin. I've booted down the computer and am using Finnix to try to recover from it. I have succeeded in mounting the drive, and confirmed that, yes, the entire /bin folder is deleted. Is it possible to recover from this without reinstalling the OS? I'm thinking that I could setup a VM with the same OS and architecture (Ubuntu Server 11.10 alpha release, x86) and install all the packages I had installed on the server, then just copy the /bin folder. Will this work? Am I better off just starting over?

I'm trying to use a shuttle PC running Windows7 to recover the data from the drives which contained an XP boot volume. I just want the data, it doesn't have to boot. What program would I need to rebuild / interrogate the drives (one of them is failing the onboard hardware test)? What drivers would I need to install? Windows7 sees the drive as one partition but doesn't see volume information. Ubuntu can see the drive as one partition and also can tell what the drive is called, but can't access the data Any help appreciated!! :)

When I go to TaskRestore Transaction log is dimmed/disabled. 4) I checked ManagementMaintenance Plans. I can't find any restored point there. It seems that our maintenance plan hasn't been working. Now I would like, if possible, to recover my old data.
