• Tomcat app doesn't work with Fingerprint Reader in Windows 7

  I've got a tomcat webapp that uses a fingerprint reader. It works fine under Windows XP and Windows 7 if you double click on tomcat.exe. It doesn't work on Windows 7 if you run tomcat as a service. I imagine that when run as a service the process doesn't have the required permissions to talk to the device. I've tried running it as an administrator and verified that it's doing so with Process Explorer. What else should I check?

By running, I mean fetch from imap, show and reply to mails without external applications. I've heard many good things about Wanderlust but the webpage suggests it is not supported. Any suggestions? • RSS Reader with inline image downloader for offline viewing

  Guess the title kind of says it all, I know there have been a few of these questions before and I have tirelessly tried to do this research but have had very little luck. Essentially I love Google Reader and gears for offline viewing but more and more blogs are referring to diagrams and pictures in their articles and if I'm on a plane, I am not able to see any of these since they are not downloaded during offline mode. Any RSS readers out there that are?

• CFBundleDocumentTypes and iPad camera connection kit (SD reader)

  I am trying to register a custom document type in an iPad app, with the hopes that I can be prompted to work with files on an SD card attached to the iPad through the camera connection kit. Does anyone know if this is currently possible (or even for sure if it's not possible)? I was hoping that the Camera tab in Photos would use a document interaction controller for types it did not understand, but it seems like Photos does not check for alternate handlers at all - I tried also registering support for the jpg type but was not prompted when using photos and loading in JPG images from an SD card. There is an SD reader app called Zoomit that appears to read many different types from an SD card: http://currentphotographer.com/zoomit-application-enabled-sd-card-reader-for-the-iphone/ But it seems that involves custom hardware, that differs from the standard SD reader.

• How does a PDF prevent itself from being printed?

  I have a PDF for my camera's manual, and Adobe Reader won't let me print it (the print option is grayed out). SumatraPDF also does the same thing (it even says print denied). How does the PDF prevent itself from being printed? It seems that if the program can display it on the screen, then it can also print it. Maybe Adobe Reader respects the PDF not printing, but surely an open source PDF reader wouldn't be so restrictive. So is there something more to this than merely the PDF reader software respecting the PDF's request to not be able to be printed?

  I am looking for a magnetic card reader with data storage of about 2 GB. This reader be placed in open under a shade, but would be exposed to temperatures from -5 C to 50 C. Job is to swipe customer loyalty cards issued to regular customers of a gas station. Each time they get gas filled, they will swipe their card, to mark their presence. Swiped data be stored in the reader. And on intervals be transferred to a PC lying in the office. The customer visits data be used to award some gifts or benefits to frequently visiting clients. • Change Message on Sony Reader to “Do not disconnect”

  When I connect a Sony Reader to an USB port “USB connected” is shown on the Reader. When the Sony “Reader Library” software is started this message changes to “Do not disconnect”. I want to implement this in a software tool to. There seems to be no file locked. Perhaps it is done via ebookUsb.dll. Does anybody know how this is done from any programming language? Would it be possible to connect the new reader to the old USB port on the motherboard?   I'm looking to buy an evaluation security token (combined smart card/usb reader) for my business that works on: Windows 7 x64 OS X 10.6.x x64 Ubuntu Linux (64 or 32 bit, 10.04 or 10.10, I can bend based on possible tokens) Functionality I need is: Login authentication Authentication for whole-disk encryption (in Linux/Windows, Mac is flexible here) Signing/encryption using PGP and x.509 certificates RSA-2048 key-capable (1024 not good enough.) I can manage the certificates myself Open source middleware/drivers (not necessarily FOSS, just source available. Can flex on this, I just want to be able to audit the code. OpenSC-compatible on Linux would be great.) Is there any token that can do all of this? Or would I need multiple ones to accomplish this? Or do I need to look at smart cards and readers to get this? I have been researching this for a while and have had a heck of a time even getting accurate information about products. Also, I am in the USA, and it appears that EU export laws prevent me from buying from there, so those vendors are out. I was looking at Feitian tokens from Gooze, but since they are in France I can't buy.

• Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• Installing Linux from External Card Reader

  I have this problem. I was experimenting if I could use a memory card (SDHC) as an USB drive for all intents and purposes, and when I put the card in an USB card reader, I can use it just like regular USB stick and it also shows up in the BBS popup menu as an USB stick. When I tried to create an installation media out of it like this: sudo dd if=/path/to/image of=/dev/sdb And tried to boot from it, simply nothing happened. Cursor blinked a couple times, and jumped to the GRUB of my pre-existing GNU/Linux installation. What am I missing here? Is this not doable? I tried this with Xubuntu 12.04 and ArchLinux, by the way. I have also tried UNetBootIn instead of dd. Nothing happened differently.

  I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop. Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides. I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space. Any suggestions?

  Hello, I have a netbook with Linpus Linux and I'm trying to open automatically generated documents with Acrobat Reader that use Verdana but without having it embedded inside the PDF file. Linpus doesn't come natively with any Verdana font so I had to install them inside /usr/share/fonts/by doing mkfontdirand fc-cacheto force a recache of the fonts. Then I've been able to select it inside other programs (eg. OpenOffice) but I'm still unable to open these PDFs. It seems that Acrobat is unable to find the font anyway. Since I have no control on how these PDFs are generated, is there a way to force Acrobat to use a specific font is the one it needs is unfound? Or maybe Acrobat needs a different kind of font configuration on Linux? Thanks in advance

  I got an HP ProBook 4540s in December--When I first got it, every time I booted up, there was a rather large icon, almost like a Windows 7 gadget, to access HP Protect Tools, but I had too much going on to mess with it right away and kept clicking on something like "remind me next time I log on" and determined to get acquainted with it after the holidays--But at some point in time, that icon went away and now I can't locate it at all-- I'd like to try, and probably use, the fingerprint reader and explore whatever else is among the Protect Tools, but now I can't find them or any folder or .exe to acceess them-- Can anyone help me find them?-- Thanks so much

• All program links (icons, menu items) try to use Adobe Reader to run them

  My mother was opening Internet Mail to check her mail on her new Windows 7 PC and a pop-up window asked her if she wanted to use Adobe Reader as the default program instead. She must have clicked yes. Now all of the Start Menu and Desktop icons have the adobe logo and appear to try and use adobe to execute the programs. Has anyone encountered this and were they able to fix it? She tried to associate another program and ended up having the Internet Explorer icon and program replacing the Adobe icons. This woman can tear up a steel ball with a rubber mallet.

• FingerPrint Reader SDK or API

  Hello, I am looking for an SDK or API that I could utilize to simply grab a Bitmap or Byte[] from the fingerprint reader. Most of the SDKs out there do much more than this and require expensive licensing which I don't want. I will be integrating this into a .NET windows application. One requirement, it needs to work with a Futronics FS80 which is a very popular fingerprint reader. Any suggestions?
