    Is anyone at Microsoft listening to the SPAM problem here on Weblogs.asp.net? My “ Can anyone do anything about the spam here on weblogs.asp.net? ” post from October got over 12 spam comments posted to it in the past 24 hours. I have comments all moderated, but that just means I have a crapload of work to do each time people comment. Also, when you click on a link from a comment notification email you are taken to an insecure site warning due to an invalid SSL Cert. We really just need some updates...(read more)

    I am developing an app in ddd maner. So I have a complex domain model. Suppose I have a Fare object and Airline. Each Airline should contain several or much more Fares. My UI should represent Model (only small part of complex model) as a list of Airline, when the user select the Airline, I must show the list of Fares. User can filtering the Fares (by travel time, cost, etc.). What is the appropriate place for filtering Fares and Airlines? I am assuming that I should do it in ViewModel. Like: My domain model has wrapped with Service Layer - UI works with ViewModel - ViewModel obtain data from Service Layer filtering it and create DTO objects for UI. Or I'm wrong?

  • How can I report a website that uses the webmail APIs to send spam?

    I've signed up for a cool job website that, unfortunately, asks you if you want to "invite your friends", and if you say so, you can give them access to your Gmail contacts to send the invite. However, contrary to what everyone would be expecting, they don't give you a list of who you want to invite; instead, they simply directly send spam to your entire contact list, like old-fashioned Outlook viruses. When you complain about this with them, they simply say "we will check the application and see if there is anything that might be confusing for the users". For me and some other friends (that felt for the same prank), this is a clear break on web best practices and a big disrespect on the users' trust. Thus, I would like to know what can we do to stop the website of using Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook APIs to send spam this way. P.S.: I wonder what would happen if I've given this website the access to post in my Facebook timeline as well. I've got a couple of calls from relatives asking about the email and I wonder how many unrelated people got this spam, like HR addresses from my past and whatnot.

  • Windows Filtering Platform not turning off until admin logon. Win2008R2sp1

    Just installed Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 to see if it would fix this problem, but it didn't. Until an administrator logs onto the domain controller, there are many events that WFP blocked a connection from Server60 to Server60 or Server60 to Server70. Both server60 and server70 are the domain controllers. One the admin logs on, the WFP events stop. The firewall is off by default GPO. Yes, i know that the WFP kicks in during the boot up sequence until the firewall takes over or in my case does not take over (since Vista), but i clearly should not have to autologon to a domain controller and call autolock or something.   • ELMAH - Filtering 404 Errors

    I am attempting to configure ELMAH to filter 404 errors and I am running into difficulties with the XML-provided filter rules in my Web.config file. I followed the tutorial here and here and added an <is-type binding="BaseException" type="System.IO.FileNotFoundException" /> declaration under my <test><or>... declaration, but that completely failed. When I tested it locally I stuck a breakpoint in protected void ErrorLog_Filtering() {} of the Global.asax found that the System.Web.HttpException that gets fired by ASP.NET for a 404 doesn't have a base type of System.IO.FileNotFound, but rather it is simply a System.Web.HttpException. Next I decided to try a <regex binding="BaseException.Message" pattern="The file '/[^']+' does not exist" /> in the hopes that any exception matching the pattern "The file '/foo.ext' does not exist" would get filtered, but that too having no effect. As a last resort I tried <is-type binding="BaseException" type="System.Exception" />, and even that is entirely disregarded. I'm inclined to think there's a configuration error with ELMAH, but I fail to see any. Am I missing something blatantly obvious?   • The Politics of Junk Filtering

    If the national postal service, such as the Royal Mail in the UK, were to go through your letters and throw away all the stuff it considered to be junk instead of delivering it to you, you might be rather pleased until you discovered that it took a too liberal decision about what was junk. Catalogs you'd asked for? Junk! Requests from charities? Who needs them! Parcels from competing carriers? Toss them away! The possibility for abuse for an agency that was in a monopolistic position is just too scary to tolerate. After all, the postal service could charge 'consultancy fees' to any sender who wanted to guarantee that his stuff got delivered, or they could even farm this out to other companies. Because Microsoft Outlook is just about the only email client used by the international business community in the west, its' SPAM filter is the final arbiter as to what gets read. My Outlook 2007, set to the default settings, junks all the perfectly innocent email newsletters that I subscribe to. Whereas Google Mail, Yahoo, and LIVE are all pretty accurate in detecting spam, Outlook makes all sorts of silly mistakes. The documentation speaks techno-babble about 'advanced heuristics', but the result boils down to an inaccurate mess. The more that Microsoft fiddles with it, the stickier the mess. To make matters worse, it still lets through obvious spam. The filter is occasionally updated along with other automatic 'security' updates you opt for automatic updates. As an editor for a popular online publication that provides a newsletter service, this is an obvious source of frustration. We follow all the best-practices we know about. We ensure that it is a trivial task to opt out of receiving it. We format the newsletter to the requirements of the Service Providers. We follow up, and resolve, every complaint. As a result, it gets delivered. It is galling to discover that, after all that effort, Outlook then often judges the contents to be junk on a whim, so you don't get to see it. A few days ago, Microsoft published the PST file format specification, under pressure from a European Union interoperability investigation by ECIS (the European Committee for Interoperable Systems). The objective was that other applications could then access existing PST files so as to migrate from existing Outlook installations to other solutions. Joaquín Almunia, the current competition commissioner, should now turn his attention to the more subtle problems of Microsoft Outlook. The Junk problem seems to have come from clumsy implementation of client-side spam filtering rather than from deliberate exploitation of a monopoly on the desktop email client for businesses, but it is a growing problem nonetheless.   • What does the email header "X-CAA-SPAM" refer to?

    I've got an application that sends out notification emails to users of the application (this is not spam; the information in these emails is solicited and useful, and is also a feature turned off by default and must be enabled by the user). The app is still in beta, and one of our testers reports that the notification emails are going to his junk mail folder in Outlook 2003. This is the only reported case of this, but I asked him to send me the email headers from the message, and I noticed that there is a header there labeled "X-CAA-SPAM" with a value of 00000 . I'm a programmer, so I'm fairly green in the world of successful automated emails - does anyone know if this header is the culprit? If not, any suggestions?

    Using Python, I'm computing cosine similarity across items. given event data that represents a purchase (user,item), I have a list of all items 'bought' by my users. Given this input data (user,item) X,1 X,2 Y,1 Y,2 Z,2 Z,3 I build a python dictionary {1: ['X','Y'], 2 : ['X','Y','Z'], 3 : ['Z']} From that dictionary, I generate a bought/not bought matrix, also another dictionary(bnb). {1 : [1,1,0], 2 : [1,1,1], 3 : [0,0,1]} From there, I'm computing similarity between (1,2) by calculating cosine between (1,1,0) and (1,1,1), yielding 0.816496 I'm doing this by: items=[1,2,3] for item in items: for sub in items: if sub >= item: #as to not calculate similarity on the inverse sim = coSim( bnb[item], bnb[sub] ) I think the brute force approach is killing me and it only runs slower as the data gets larger. Using my trusty laptop, this calculation runs for hours when dealing with 8500 users and 3500 items. I'm trying to compute similarity for all items in my dict and it's taking longer than I'd like it to. I think this is a good candidate for MapReduce but I'm having trouble 'thinking' in terms of key/value pairs. Alternatively, is the issue with my approach and not necessarily a candidate for Map Reduce?

    Hi I'm trying to develop a site that recommends items(fx. books) to users based on their preferences. So far, I've read O'Reilly's "Collective Intelligence" and numerous other online articles. They all, however, seem to deal with single instances of recommendation, for example if you like book A then you might like book B. What I'm trying to do is to create a set of 'preference-nodes' for each user on my site. Let's say a user likes book A,B and C. Then, when they add book D, I don't want the system to recommend other books based solely other users experience with book D. I wan't the system to look up similar 'preference-nodes' and recommend books based on that. Here's an example of 4 nodes: User1: 'book A'->'book B'->'book C' User2: 'book A'->'book B'->'book C'->'book D' user3: 'book X'->'book Y'->'book C'->'book Z' user4: 'book W'->'book Q'->'book C'->'book Z' So a recommendation system, as described in the material I've read, would recommend book Z to User 1, because there are two people who recommends Z in conjuction with liking C (ie. Z weighs more than D), even though a user with a similar 'preference-node', User2, would be more qualified to recommend book D because he has a more similar interest-pattern. So does any of you have any experience with this sort of thing? Is there some things I should try to read or does there exist any open source systems for this? Thanks for your time! Small edit: I think last.fm's algorithm is doing exactly what I my system to do. Using the preference-trees of people to recommmend music more personally to people.     Hi On my WSS server I have run the following stsadm command to filter the people picker results: stsadm.exe -o setproperty -url http://myserver -pn "peoplepicker-searchadcu stomfilter" -pv "(memberOf=CN=SharePoint,OU=AccessGroups,DC=contosio,DC=local)" My WSS sites are all used by different groups of users. Whenever I create a new site collection in WSS I want to ensure that I can filter the people picker to only show he relevant users for that group - can I automate this or would I have to manually do something like the above stsadm command?   • Awk filtering values between two files when regions intersect (any solutions welcome)

    This is building upon an earlier question Awk conditional filter one file based on another (or other solutions) I have an awk program that outputs a column from rows in a text file 'refGene.txt if values in that row match 2 out of 3 values in another text file. I need to include an additional criteria for finding a match between the two files. The criteria is inclusion if the range of the 2 numberical values specified in each row in file 1 overlap with the range of the two values in a row in refGene.txt. An example of a line in File 1: chr1 10 20 chr2 10 20 and an example line in file 2(refGene.txt) of the matching columns ($3, $5, $ 6): chr1 5 30 Currently the awk program does not treat this as a match because although the first column matches neither the 2nd or 3rd columns do no. But I would like a way to treat this as a match because the region 10-20 in file 1 is WITHIN the range of 5-30 in refGene.txt. However the second line in file 1 should NOT match because the first column does not match, which is necessary. If there is a way to include cases when any of the range in file 1 overlaps with any of the range in refGene.txt that would be really helpful. It should also replace the below conditional statements as it would also find all the cases currently described below. Please let me know if my question is unclear. Any help is really appreciated, thanks it advance! However this is a bit different. I am using the sessions plugin (which works fine). On one page I have a set of normal drop downs, on submit you get taken to a separate page which runs the function above, however the rows/columns all show and they don't seem to filter at all.

    I've been playing around a little with the Exocortex implementation of the FFT, but I'm having some problems. Whenever I modify the amplitudes of the frequency bins before calling the iFFT the resulting signal contains some clicks and pops, especially when low frequencies are present in the signal (like drums or basses). However, this does not happen if I attenuate all the bins by the same factor. Let me put an example of the output buffer of a 4-sample FFT: // Bin 0 (DC) FFTOut[0] = 0.0000610351563 FFTOut[1] = 0.0 // Bin 1 FFTOut[2] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[3] = 0.000629425049 // Bin 2 FFTOut[4] = -0.0000381469727 FFTOut[5] = 0.0 // Bin 3, this is the first and only negative frequency bin. FFTOut[6] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[7] = -0.000629425049 The output is composed of pairs of floats, each representing the real and imaginay parts of a single bin.   • Does SMTP greylisting a) stop much spam and b) stop much legitimate mail?

    I've just set up an SMTP server on a relatively little used domain using Postfix and enabled greylisting with SQLGrey. So far it seems to be working OK, and while there's the slight irritation of delays to emails from new senders, I can see from the logs that it's deterring a number of spam messages. In your experience does greylisting effectively stop much spam? Is it a useful addition to e.g. SpamAssassin or is adding it on top overkill/unnecessary? If I were to roll this out to heavier use domains (perhaps with more demanding users) would you anticipate a significant portion of poorly configured mail servers that would end up bouncing or losing messages?

  • My datacenter is unable to add PTR/rDNS record, then how can I prevent the mail outgoing from going to spam folder?

    I am having problem that mail sent out from my server all goes to recipient's spam folder. I am running Drupal sites on Linux server. CentOS w/ cPanel. Our users cannot receive email as the mail went to the spam folder. (such as registration email, contact form email) I was advised that I need to have PTR/rDNS record added for my host. I then contact my datacenter to add PTR/rDNS thing, unfortunately, the datacenter said they are unable to do it. So what can I do? Any other ways I can fix the problem? Thank you!
