Anyway, my boss told me I should explore and learn about MVC, Memcache, Design Patterns, how Apache servers work and how to set one up etc. What I want to ask is actually this: What should I learn further? • Best way of Javascript web development in Netbeans (Hot deployment)

  I'm beginning Javascript development and as a beginner in JavaScript I make a lot of mistakes. The way I'm developing is very counter-productive because every mistake I fix I have to shutdown Glassfish, re-build the app and re-deploy it. My app is a Java back-end with REST services and the Html, JavaScript, CSS for the frontend. Everything is packed in a .ear file. As of right now, I'm just working with the frontend but I do have to make this whole process to update the files. My question is ... is there a better way of doing this? Can somebody tell how do you guys work in a similar setup to do the everyday development?

• Daemon/Software that takes changes from sql database and applies them to unix config files

  I was wondering if there was a unix daemon available that would be capable of something like this: admin adds an IP entry to a DB; daemon finds change after wait interval and manipulates ifconfig/config files I was thinking maybe there is a plugin for cfengine that might be able to do this, but I couldn't find any. I mean this would be a fairly easy thing to script up in perl, but why re-invent the wheel if theres already something out there that is better than what my limited programming abilities can make. Lastly, if it worked on FreeBSD that'd be great.

  I am a research chemist by day and I am a self-taught hobbyist iOS programmer by night. I am in the process of developing a moderately complex iOS app and hope to launch it within a month or two. I love everything about iOS development (and programming in general). I want to know if iOS development could become a backup career for me if I loose my job. My question: Let's say I had a couple of apps in the app store, a solid foundation in objective-C and the apple frameworks and basic knowledge on network integrated apps.   I use mainly PHP for web development, but recently, I started thinking about using Google App Engine. It doesn't use PHP which I am already familiar with, so there will be a steeper learning curve. Probably using Python/Django. But I think it maybe worthwhile. Some advantages I see: Focus on App/Development. No need to setup/maintain server ... no more server configs Scales automatically Pay for what you use. Free for low usage Reliable, it's Google after all Some concerns though: Does database with no joins pose a problem for those who used App Engine before? Do I have to upload to Google just to test? Will it be slow compared to testing locally? What are your thoughts and opinions? Why would you use or not use App Engine?

There are generally two approaches I've seen developers take in their workflow: -optimize for webkit then apply hacks for IE7-9, or -optimize for IE7-8 then apply newer features for IE9/webkit Basically starting at the front of technology and working toward the back, or starting at the back of technology and working toward the front.   I am new to UNIX and can't figure out how to use the 'quota' command to see my disk usages. So I install “quota” using the following command sudo apt-get install quota But when I type in the command quota -v or anything similar, it doesn’t show anything. According to most website online (http://acs.ucsd.edu/students/quota.shtml#check-remove) , it suppose to show me all the quota limitation when I type in quota -v. can you please tell me how can I make it work or if I am doing something wrong here. your help is greatly appreciated. Other than some direction and impetus from management, we're pretty much on our own to develop the new website. Mostly I've worked in Unix, where I've learned Unix Philosophy, which can be summarized as Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together.   I've used Daemontools to provide a simple and reliable way to supervise Unix services on my servers. It works well, but it requires a different way of thinking (The DJB Way) and some common complaints are: TAI64N based timestamps Doesn't store scripts under /etc/init.d (or (/usr/local)/etc/rc.d) Doesn't always work with scripts like apachectl. Some scripts need to be rewritten. I remember that some similar "supervisor/watchdog" daemons were in the works about two years ago, but some were still a little rough around the edges. If you have switched from Daemontools to something else, what did you choose and did it work well for you? Does RedHat or Ubuntu come with any process supervisor utilities by default?

• How to properly shutdown or reboot a Unix/Linux server

  What is the correct way to turn off a Unix/Linux server? From my googling, I have learned (hopefully) the following: shutdown: I should use this, with the parameter -h to halt, or the parameter -r to reboot halt: halts the computer (stops the processor? does this physically turn the power of the computer off?). I think this will call shutdown if not at init0, otherwise just halts. reboot: if not at init6, calls shutdown, otherwise just reboots the computer. if all that is correct, then the only thing I can't figure out is what exactly 'halt' does. Does it just stop the processor but not turn the computer physically off? How do I "poweroff" the computer? Thanks

I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

• Generic tool to configure startup applications on Unix

  Is there an automated deployment tool that manages startup applications on a variety of machines, especially the Unices? Or is the only hope to study the nuts and bolts of each Unix (osx, linux, solaris, hpux, aix) on how to configure applications to launch on system startup? I want to run them as a specific user, instead of root. At the moment, I run them all within a screen session .. which is a hassle, as this requires manual intervention every time the machine is rebooted for some reason. Ideally, I am looking for a tool that would read, say, ~/.startup-programs which file contains, on each line, the command line to launch the needed daemons. And this tool should work on OSX, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX ... writing the appropriate startup scripts for each platform.

  I just got a new project. It’s a WinForm app. And it’s interesting because I will have the possibility to learn how fish farms work and are managed. I will have to develop touch interfaces, and use datasnap to communicate and sync data between farm and office. The development will be done in DELPHI win32, still not sure about the database, but maybe SQLlite. So now comes the difficult part of the project, building it. I am just finishing one. It took me a lot of time to do it and I am a bit “burned out”. I will have time to relax, not much, but a few days. What I am looking is some tips and tricks and possibly tools to be able to speed up the development. It must be up and running in 2 months. So what tricks do you use to speed up things?

Sorry if this voids the rules of conduct on this website! I'm very new to using unix. I have a program that converts a ".evt" file to an .rq1, which is used for data analysis. The command to do so is simple, for example: Convert data.evt (this outputs data.rq1). This program, let's say, is located in directory /A and I have a data file that I want to convert in directory /B. How would I go about executing this program without moving the convert program to directory B?
