• How to install missing Sound Drivers in Ubuntu?

  I seem to be missing drivers for my Gateway laptop MA7. I have looked in System-Admin-Hardware Drivers, but it does not show up in there.There are also no devices listed in Sound-Hardware. I'm guessing at this point that I don't have the driver installed.   I am unable to connect my Nokia 2690 to my PC via data cable using Nokia PC Suite under Windows XP SP3 Pro 32 bit. Every time I connect my mobile using the data cable, the Nokia App shows a window where it says it's "Installing the required drivers. Please wait". But even after several hours my phone never conects to my PC and the screen remains there idle. I checked in he task manager, Nokia PC Suite didn't go unresponsive.

• Use a RAID Controller without drivers?

  Ordered an Adaptec 1420SA RAID card for my Debian Squeeze media server but didn't check to see if it was compatible, turns out it's not because it uses something called hostRAID which requires special drivers that aren't available for Debian. Could I still use the card as an ordinary controller and just use OS software RAID?? I'm not looking for speed, just need to mirror some drives that will be used for storage, the OS will reside on a disk connected to the server's onboard controller so the system won't be booting from any drives on the Adaptec controller.

  Hi, I am trying to complete the picture of how the PC and the OS interacts together. And I am at point, where I am little out of guess when it comes to device drivers. Please, don´t write things like its too complicated, or you don´t need to know when using high programming laguage and winapi functions. I want to know, it´s for study purposes. So, the very basic structure of how OS and PC (by PC I mean of course HW) is how I see it is that all other than direct CPU commands, which can CPU do on itself (arithmetic operation, its registers access and memory access) must pass thru OS. Mainly becouse from ring level 3 you cannot use in and out intructions which are used for acesing other HW. I know that there is MMIO,but it must be set by port comunication first. It was not like this all the time. Even I am bit young to remember MSDOS, I know you could access HW directly, becouse there ws no limitation, no ring mode. So you could to write string to diplay use wheather DOS function, or directly acess video card memory and write it by yourself. But as OS developed, there is no longer this possibility. But it is fine, since OS now handles all the HW comunication, and frankly it more convinient and much more safe (I would say the only option) in multitasking environment. So nowdays you instead of using int instructions to use BIOS mapped function or DOS function you call dll which internally than handles everything you don´t need to know about. I understand this. I also undrstand that device drivers is the piece of code that runs in ring level 0, so it can do all the HW interactions. But what I don´t understand is connection between OS and device driver. Let´s take a example - I want to make a sound card make a sound. So I call windows API to acess sound card, but what happens than? Does windows call device drivers to do so? But if it does call device driver, does it mean, that all device drivers which can be called by winAPI function, must have routines named in some specific way? I mean, when I have new sound card, must its drivers have functions named same as the old one? So Windows can actually call the same function from its perspective? But if Windows have predefined sets of functions requored by device drivers, that it cannot use new drivers that doesent existed before last version of OS came out. Please, help me understand this mess. I am really getting mad. Thanks.

  I recently installed third-party drivers for the (Sony) PS3 controller on my friend's PC (Windows XP). I found out a few days later that his MP3 player (also Sony) is no longer recognized by Windows. He gets the "connect device" sound, and about 250ms later, the "disconnect device" sound. I figured the controller driver took over the Walkman's device ID, so I went through the registry and C:\Windows\inf removing all references to Sony's VID (054C), but I haven't had any luck. What would you do in this situation?

  I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

• Update Manager offers 900+ updates under partial upgrade mode

  Today I checked for updates and got an error message telling me I must do a partial upgrade. I was shocked to see how many updates there were available. 900+ Updates! By using synaptic I found out that it wanted to remove core packages from my system, such as compiz and python, but also update some as well. I am very confused why package manager would want to do this all of a sudden, and why it wants to destroy my system. I really need an answer, because I now cannot update my system.

  I have ubuntu 13.04. In the software and update menu, under additional drivers, Were it says "Broadcom Corporation; BCM4312 802.11b/gLP.PHY" the box labbeled "do not use it ticked" and when i try tick the one that says "Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA Wireless drivers....." it wont let me apply changes, it starts doing it then stops and re-ticks the do not use box. Because of this I can not use the wiress driver. Is there another way i can fix this. Or maby restore ubuntu to previous date. I accidentally ticked the do not use box this morning and now can't undo it. I have restarted several times to try apply changes and still no luck

  On the Intel site I'm struggling to find what the latest driver version is for certain chipsets. From a system info tool I have several PCs (laptops) with the following reported graphics: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q35 Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset All use the same driver igxprd32.dll at version 6.14.0010.4xxx (last 3 digits vary). All PCs are XP 32 bit. I am not certain but I think these are all using the same basic chipset. More than likely the drivers were never updated so I wondered what version might be relevant. Any help on tracking down the latest driver version (I just need the number, so I can see how out of date they are) and figuring out which chips these cards are would be great.

I've downloaded driver from Nvidia.com which say support my GF 9600 GT, but when I installed it, it said This graphics drivers could not find compatible graphics hardware. I go into safe mode, uninstall Standard Graphics Adapter that auto installed then install my Nvidia driver, still not work. Anyone can show me how to solve this problem?

• Generic Windows 98 USB Drive drivers?

  I've got an old Win98 machine that I'd like to pull some data off of. (Tens of gigs of data, actually.) The machine still runs fine, but due to the age, it doesn't have a cd burner, and the pre-NT networking won't connect to SMB shares without a fair amount of wrenching on the registry that I don't really want to do. What I really want to do is plug in an external USB hard drive and copy the files. But - Win98 didn't ship with generic USB drive drivers, and external drives don't ship with them these days. Can anyone point me at a reputable generic driver I can install?

• Unable to Boot Into Windows 7 after Ubuntu 10.04 Update

  I'm running a dual boot Windows 7 / Ubuntu 10.04 system. I ran the Ubuntu update last night, and today when I tried to boot into Windows 7, it goes straight to the windows recovery on my Acer 5517 laptop. I've spent the entire day trying to resolve this with no success. I used my Windows 7 Recovery Disk to reset the mbr, but that didn't help. The system was working perfectly prior to the update. It appears that now Grub is pointing to the recovery partition rather than the primary partition. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't relish the idea of reformatting and starting from scratch.

  I bought a couple of PNY eSATA cards for notebook computers, model P-NSA2-EC-RF. I mistakenly thought that they would be a bit more plug-and-play, like cards that supply USB or Firewire ports. They did not ship with the Driver CD, and the drivers I found on the PNY web site didn't work. I've emailed their support group, but we all know how likely it is that they will respond before the end of the decade. • Installing drivers for switchable graphics

  I recently bought a laptop that came with Windows 7 64-bit installed. I have some older (16-bit and 32-bit) software that doesn't work with 64-bit Windows, but works just fine with 32-bit. Since I also wanted to get rid of all of the pre-installed spam, I decided to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 32-bit. I can't get the graphics cards working. This laptop uses switchable graphics, an Intel card and a Radeon card. I first tried installing this driver from Intel, which works for the Intel card. Of course, the Radeon card doesn't work with this driver and I need it for some of the newer games I have. I also tried this driver. Windows's device manager will recognize the Radeon card, but it will still use the Intel card. Also, even though that package says it contains the Intel driver, the Intel card still isn't properly recognized by Windows (leaving me with a nasty 800x600 resolution). On top of that, the Catalyst Control Center won't open (saying "The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter") I tried installing HP's driver then installing Intel's driver on top of it. Device manager will then recognize both graphics cards properly. However, the laptop still uses the Intel card. The CCC still won't start (saying the same thing as before) and I can't find any of 'switching' graphics cards. Before formatting, I could right-click the desktop and click "Configure Switchable Graphics" This option hasn't been in the context menu regardless of what driver(s) I've installed. After some research, I found out that this menu entry runs the command "cli.exe Start PowerXpressHybrid" I've tried manually running this command, but I get the same unsupported message from CCC. So, does anyone know how I can get this working? I would like to be able to switch between the Intel and Radeon. But, if there's some way to disable the Intel and use only the Radeon, that would be fine I dual-boot with Linux (framebuffer uses the Intel, haven't even tried getting X set up yet) Here's the output of lspci # lspci -v | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Seymour [AMD Radeon HD 6470M] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) The laptop is a HP Pavilion g6t-1d00. • Can't install SB750 RAID drivers in Windows 7 for two additional storage drives

  Mobo: ASUS M4A79XTD, 790X/SB750 OS: Windows 7 x64 I currently have SATA 1-4 set to RAID and SATA 5-6 set to IDE. I have an SSD connected to SATA5 with Windows 7 installed on it, and that works fine. I also have configured a RAID 1 array of two 1TB HDDs, connected to SATA 1 and 2. These don't show up in Windows, and I'm having trouble getting the RAID driver installed. I even tried booting from the Windows DVD and repairing or installing Windows, but when I navigated to the relevant .sys files on my motherboard's driver CD, Windows setup told me that the files in question weren't relevant to my hardware. To be clear: I'm not trying to install Windows on a RAID. I have Windows installed on a separate disk on a separate SATA controller. I just want to get the SB750 RAID drivers installed so that the Windows disk utility can see my RAID 1 array, which is composed of two other disks. Do I need to wipe my SSD and reinstall Windows to get the RAID driver installed? That seems kind of ridiculous, and given what I described above, I'm not even sure it would work. Any help or guidance would be appreciated - thanks! Edit: Also, I've copied the driver files from the mobo CD into system32 and rebooted, no luck. Then I changed HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorV\Start from 3 to 0, and that didn't work either.

• Drivers and firmware for the LiteOn ihap-122-9 DVD drive

  I'm trying to replace the DVD drive in my old PC. LiteOn.com is a mess and I can't find a single working driver or firmware update there, or anywhere. Windows XP tries to use a default, generic driver dated 2001. (About 9 years before this drive even existed.) http://www.firmwarehq.com/download_1..._6L0H.EXE.html This correctly finds my LiteOn ihap-122-9 DVD Drive. It correctly finds that I'm currently using firmware 6L0F. It correctly tries to install 6L0H. It completes 100% but then just fails and says "contact your vendor". Does anyone know why? Where can I actually get drivers... and firmware updates... that actually work for the ihap-122-9? Apparently, the newest driver IS the 1 made 9 years before the drive existed. (Unbelievable.) And the latest firmware is the 1 that is already in the drive. (Common.) No other drive I've had in this computer ever had a problem. This brand new LiteOn is doing this: Opening MY COMPUTER now takes 60 seconds. MY COMPUTER marking the drive as "DVD F:" takes another 30 seconds. MY COMPUTER showing "Batman II" title takes another 15 seconds. Clicking and running the movie will take another 30 seconds for the main-menu to appear. The movie starts about 20 seconds later. The movie runs fine for 1-2 seconds... then stops for 5 seconds.... then starts again and plays for 1-2 seconds. Repeats for 2 hours. (It happens with all store-bought DVDs and all home-made DVDs.)

• HP Laserjet 1320 drivers for Windows 7

  Background I replaced som XP computers with Win 7 computers. We have a HP Laserjet 1320dn printer attached to the LAN. The XP computers could print to it from Word in duplex mode without any issues. Problem The Win 7 computers downloaded a full set of drivers including a "HP Laserjet 1320 PCL5" driver. However using this, Word's page footers cause extra pages to be printed with just a letter or so at a time from the footer. Some other apps have similar issues. I also have an ancient Laserjet 1200 attached to the LAN via a Jetdirect box and that works just fine. So I don't think the problem is with Word (the computers came with Word 2010 starter). What I tried I wrangled the control-panel new printer dialogue into using a "HP Laserjet 2100 PS" driver for the HP Laserjet 1320dn. Now my Word documents print as they should. However I don't have a duplex option on the print dialogue. I'd really like to be able to use duplex printing. Question Windows used to have a Universal Postscript driver that read a Postscript Printer Definition (PPD) file to make the printer's features available (tray choice, duplex etc). I can't see any way to do this in Windows 7. Is there a way? Is there any other way I can get Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to print properly to a HP Laserjet 1320dn and have access to all it's major features? Addendum: My page in Word looks like this: +--------------------+ | aa bb cc | | | | lorem ipsum dolor | | | ... | | | pp qq rr | +--------------------+ The headers and footers were inserted using Insert - header - blank (3 column). When printed I get 1 page with aa, bb, cc, pp in correct position (no other text) 1 blank page 1 page with qq in correct position (no other text) 1 blank page 1 page with rr in correct position (no other text) 1 blank page 1 page with lorem ipsum dolor in correct position (no headers or footers) If I use a Laserjet 2100 driver I get 1 correct page.

• Driver corruption when deploying Dell Touchpad Drivers (with software) during imaging process

  We're an sccm shop, and use it to deploy Windows. When deploying Dell laptops (multiple models), the touchpad drivers seem install properly, but the software doesn't. The resulting problem is that when the touchpad is pressed on occasion, the mouse pointer will 'jump' to certain points on the screen. A possible symptom of this problem/visible sign is if the touchpad icon isn't in the system tray. The software is in the control panel, but when opened part of the gui is pixelated, indicating botched install maybe? The manual resolution to this, is to go into device manager and uninstall the driver with the option to uninstall all driver software. After a restart, the driver and software is apparently reinstalled, and from there works as expected. Obviously this partially defeats the purpose of a zero touch deployment. If anyone knows why this is and/or a possible workaround, those answers would be valid as well. Barring that, I want to find a way to deploy the driver and touchpad software in an unattended way, so that it can be conditionally installing during the imaging process. To be honest I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this, I suppose I could try drvinst.exe to install the driver, but finding out why this fails initially would keep me from spinning my wheels.
