  • how to choose a web framework and javascript library?

    - by Trylks
I've been procrastinating learning some framework for web apps w/ some library for AJAX, something like django with prototype, or turbogears with mootools, or zeta components with dojo, grok, jquery, symfony... The point is to spend some of my spare time, have "fun" and create cool stuff that hopefully is some useful. I think maybe I wouldn't like something like GWT or pyjamas because I wouldn't like to "get married" with some technology, I want to keep my freedom to add another javascript library, and so on. I didn't decide even the language yet, but I think I'd prefer python. PHP could be fine if there is some framework that is nice enough. Besides that, I don't even know where to start. I don't feel like learning a framework to then realize there is something that I cannot comfortably do, switch to another framework then find that a third framework has something really cool, etc. And the same goes for javascript libraries. So, some guidance would be really appreciated. I don't really know why are so many options available and what do they aim for, I guess some of them focus on some aspects and some on others, but I just want to make cool and nice apps that I can easily maintain, without spending too much time on coding or learning and avoiding the "trapped in the framework" feeling, when doing something is awfully complicated (or even impossible) with compared with the rest of things or doing that same thing on a different framework. I guess in the end I'll go for django and jquery since they are the most widely used options, afaik, but if I was going for the most widely used options I guess I should choose Java or PHP (I don't really like Java for my spare time, but php is not so bad), so I preferred to ask first. I think the question has to consider both, framework and library, since sometimes they are coupled. I think this is the place to ask this kind of things, sorry if not, and thank you.

  • web application or wep portal

    - by klo
as title said differences between those 2. I read all the definition and some articles, but I need information about some other aspects. Here is the thing. We want to build a web site that will contain: site, database, uploads, numerous background services that would have to collect information from uploads and from some other sites, parse them etc...I doubt that there are portlets that fits our specific need so we will have to make them our self. So, questions: 1. Deployment ( and difference in cost if possible), is deploying portals much more easier then web app ( java or .net) 2. Server load. Does portal consume much of server power ( and can you strip portal of thing that you do not use) 3. Implementation and developing of portlets. Can u make all the things that you could have done in java or .net? 4. General thoughts of when to use portals and when classic web app. Tnx all in advence...

  • A-2-Z web hosting on Amazon AWS

    - by JDelage
All, I am studying web dvp, and one of my classes is project-based. We have to build a functional site that demonstrate our understanding of: HTML, CSS, Javascript, php, MySQL, And potentially Ajax or some other web component. For the project, we can use a local server using WampServer and basically build the site entirely on our laptop. If I have time, I would like to create a real site, and I thought it would be a good way to familiarize myself with Amazon's AWS services. So if I purchase a domain name, can I rely on AWS to host the site from A-to-Z? I understand I can use AWS to host content, the database, and do the background computations, if needed. What else do I need and what are the parts that AWS cannot help me with? Second, is there good documentation for a beginner to navigate AWS and learn how to use it (either on Amazon, or some 3rd party sites, or even a good book, as long as is up to date). The ideal documentation would be a tutorial on creating a web site from a-to-z on AWS, as detailed as possible. As you can guess, I have limited understanding of the IT issues. I have 0 Linux or sysadmin experience, but this is a good opportunity to change that. I hope you can help me. Thank you, JDelage PS: Please keep the answers AWS-specific. At this point, I am only interested in alternative services to the extent that they plug a hole in Amazon's offering.

  • Adding AjaxOnly Filter in ASP.NET Web API

    - by imran_ku07
Introduction:                     Currently, ASP.NET MVC 4, ASP.NET Web API and ASP.NET Single Page Application are the hottest topics in ASP.NET community. Specifically, lot of developers loving the inclusion of ASP.NET Web API in ASP.NET MVC. ASP.NET Web API makes it very simple to build HTTP RESTful services, which can be easily consumed from desktop/mobile browsers, silverlight/flash applications and many different types of clients. Client side Ajax may be a very important consumer for various service providers. Sometimes, some HTTP service providers may need some(or all) of thier services can only be accessed from Ajax. In this article, I will show you how to implement AjaxOnly filter in ASP.NET Web API application.         Description:                     First of all you need to create a new ASP.NET MVC 4(Web API) application. Then, create a new AjaxOnly.cs file and add the following lines in this file, public class AjaxOnlyAttribute : System.Web.Http.Filters.ActionFilterAttribute { public override void OnActionExecuting(System.Web.Http.Controllers.HttpActionContext actionContext) { var request = actionContext.Request; var headers = request.Headers; if (!headers.Contains("X-Requested-With") || headers.GetValues("X-Requested-With").FirstOrDefault() != "XMLHttpRequest") actionContext.Response = request.CreateResponse(HttpStatusCode.NotFound); } }                     This is an action filter which simply checks X-Requested-With header in request with value XMLHttpRequest. If X-Requested-With header is not presant in request or this header value is not XMLHttpRequest then the filter will return 404(NotFound) response to the client.                      Now just register this filter, [AjaxOnly] public string GET(string input)                     You can also register this filter globally, if your Web API application is only targeted for Ajax consumer.         Summary:                       ASP.NET WEB API provide a framework for building RESTful services. Sometimes, you may need your certain API services can only be accessed from Ajax. In this article, I showed you how to add AjaxOnly action filter in ASP.NET Web API. Hopefully you will enjoy this article too.

  • Passing text message to web page from web user control

    - by Narendra Tiwari
Here is a brief summary how we can send a text message to webpage by a web user control. Delegates is the slolution. There are many good articles on .net delegates you can refer some of them below. The scenario is we want to send a text message to the page on completion of some activity on webcontrol. 1/ Create a Base class for webcontrol (refer code below), assuming we are passing some text messages to page from web user control  - Declare a delegate  - Declare an event of type delegate using System; using System.Data; using System.Configuration; using System.Web; using System.Web.Security; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts; using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls; //Declaring delegate with message parameter public delegate void SendMessageToThePageHandler(string messageToThePage); public         } class ControlBase: System.Web.UI.UserControl { public ControlBase() { // TODO: Add constructor logic here }protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { base.OnInit(e); }private string strMessageToPass;/// <summary> /// MessageToPass - Property to pass text message to page /// </summary> public string MessageToPass { get { return strMessageToPass; } set { strMessageToPass = value; } }/// <summary> /// SendMessageToPage - Called from control to invoke the event /// </summary> /// <param name="strMessage">Message to pass</param> public void SendMessageToPage(string strMessage) {   if (this.sendMessageToThePage != null)       this.sendMessageToThePage(strMessage); } 2/ Register events on webpage on page Load eventthis.AddControlEventHandler((ControlBase)WebUserControl1); this.AddControlEventHandler((ControlBase)WebUserControl2); /// <summary> /// AddControlEventHandler- Hooking web user control event /// </summary> /// <param name="ctrl"></param> private void AddControlEventHandler(ControlBase ctrl) { ctrl.sendMessageToThePage += delegate(string strMessage) {   //display message   lblMessage.Text = strMessage; }; } References: http://www.akadia.com/services/dotnet_delegates_and_events.html     3/

  • Use Google Apps mail with website on a separate web host

    - by Oxwivi
We've bought a domain through the free Google Apps service and use the Gmail account provided. I'm thinking of hosting our own site on a separate web host, but emails sent to our domain might be directed to our web host. Is there a way to continue using Gmail while the domain points to the web host? I've never dealt with domain names and web hosts before, nor am I experienced with web development (will use a CMS).

  • Extending jQuery Form Validation Script for new form fields

    - by user982124
    I have a simple HTML form that originally was a series of Questions (A1 to A5 and B1 to B3) with yes/no radio buttons like this: <tr> <td width="88%" valign="top" class="field_name_left">A1</td> <td width="12%" valign="top" class="field_data"> <input type="radio" name="CriteriaA1" value="Yes">Yes<input type="radio" name="CriteriaA1" value="No">No</td> </tr> The user could only answer either the A series of questions OR either the B series of questions, but not both. Also they must complete all questions in either the A or B series. I now have an additional series of questions - C1 to C6 - and need to extend my validation scripts to ensure the user enters either A, B or C and answers all questions within each series. My original script for just the A and B looks like this: $(function() { $("#editRecord").submit(function(){ // is anything checked? if(!checkEmpty()){ $("#error").html("Please check something before submitting"); //alert("nothing Checked"); return false; } // Only A _OR_ B if(isAorB()){ $("#error").html("Please complete A or B, not both"); //alert("please complete A or B, not both"); return false; }; // all A's or all B's if(allAorBChecked()){ $("#error").html("It appears you have not completed all questions"); //alert("missing data"); return false; }; if(haveNo()){ // we're going on, but sending "type = C" } //alert("all OK"); return true; }); }); function checkEmpty(){ var OK = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ if (this.checked){ OK = true; } }); return OK; } function isAorB(){ var OK = false; var Achecked = false; var Bchecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); // if we have an A checked remember it if(theChar == "A" && this.checked && !Achecked){ Achecked = true; } if(Achecked && theChar == "B" && !Bchecked){ if(this.checked){ Bchecked = true; } } if (Achecked && Bchecked){ OK = true; } }); return OK; } function allAorBChecked(){ var notOK = false; var Achecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ // skip through to see if we're doing A's or B's var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); // check the A's if(theChar == "A" && this.checked && !Achecked){ Achecked = true; } }); if(Achecked){ // set the input to A $("#type").val("A"); // check _all_ a's are checked var thisName; var thisChecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); var checked = this.checked; if (theChar == "A"){ if (this.name == thisName && !thisChecked){ // Yes wasn't checked - is No? if(!checked){ notOK = true; } } thisChecked = checked; thisName = this.name; } }); }else{ // set the input to B $("#type").val("B"); // check _all_ b's are checked var thisName; var thisChecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); var checked = this.checked; if (theChar == "B"){ if (this.name == thisName && !thisChecked){ // A wasn't checked - is B? if(!checked){ notOK = true; } } thisChecked = checked; thisName = this.name; } }); } return notOK; } function haveNo(){ var thisName; var notOK = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var checked = this.checked; if (this.name == thisName){ //Is this checked if(checked){ notOK = true; $("#type").val("C"); } } thisName = this.name; }); return notOK; } This worked well but I'm completely stuck at extending it to include the C series. I now have to check that the user hasn't answered any A and B, A and C and B and C questions. Everything I've tried fails to validate. Here's where I'm at right now with my new script: $(function() { $("#editRecord").submit(function(){ // is anything checked? if(!checkEmpty()){ $("#error").html("Please check something before submitting"); //alert("nothing Checked"); return false; } // Only A or B or C if(isAorBorC()){ $("#error").html("Please complete A or B or C, not both"); //alert("please complete A or B, not both"); return false; }; // all A's or all B's or all C's if(allAorBorCChecked()){ $("#error").html("It appears you have not completed all questions"); //alert("missing data"); return false; }; if(haveNo()){ // we're going on, but sending "type = C" } //alert("all OK"); return true; }); }); function checkEmpty(){ var OK = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ if (this.checked){ OK = true; } }); return OK; } function isAorBorC(){ var OK = false; var Achecked = false; var Bchecked = false; var Cchecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); // if we have an A checked remember it if(theChar == "A" && this.checked && !Achecked){ Achecked = true; } if(theChar == "B" && this.checked && !Achecked){ Bchecked = true; } if(theChar == "C" && this.checked && !Achecked){ Cchecked = true; } if(Achecked && theChar == "B" && !Bchecked){ if(this.checked){ Bchecked = true; } } if(Achecked && theChar == "C" && !Cchecked){ if(this.checked){ Cchecked = true; } } if(Bchecked && theChar == "C" && !Cchecked){ if(this.checked){ Cchecked = true; } } if (Achecked && Bchecked){ OK = true; } if (Achecked && CBchecked){ OK = true; } if (Bchecked && Cchecked){ OK = true; } }); return OK; } function allAorBorCChecked(){ var notOK = false; var Achecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ // skip through to see if we're doing A's or B's var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); // check the A's if(theChar == "A" && this.checked && !Achecked){ Achecked = true; } }); if(Achecked){ // set the input to A $("#type").val("A"); // check _all_ a's are checked var thisName; var thisChecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); var checked = this.checked; if (theChar == "A"){ if (this.name == thisName && !thisChecked){ // Yes wasn't checked - is No? if(!checked){ notOK = true; } } thisChecked = checked; thisName = this.name; } }); }elseif{ // set the input to B $("#type").val("B"); // check _all_ b's are checked var thisName; var thisChecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); var checked = this.checked; if (theChar == "B"){ if (this.name == thisName && !thisChecked){ // A wasn't checked - is B? if(!checked){ notOK = true; } } thisChecked = checked; thisName = this.name; } }); } return notOK; } }else{ // set the input to C $("#type").val("C"); // check _all_ c's are checked var thisName; var thisChecked = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var theChar=this.name.charAt(8); var checked = this.checked; if (theChar == "C"){ if (this.name == thisName && !thisChecked){ // A wasn't checked - is B? if(!checked){ notOK = true; } } thisChecked = checked; thisName = this.name; } }); } return notOK; } function haveNo(){ var thisName; var notOK = false; $(":radio").each(function(){ var checked = this.checked; if (this.name == thisName){ //Is this checked if(checked){ notOK = true; $("#type").val("C"); } } thisName = this.name; }); return notOK; } Anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

  • Web Application Vulnerability Scanner suggestions?

    - by Chris_K
I'm looking for a new tool for the ol' admin toolkit and would value some suggestions. I would like to do some "automated" testing of handful of websites for XSS (cross site scripting) vulns, along with checking for SQL injection opportunities. I realize that an automated tool approach isn't necessarily the only or best solution, but I'm hoping it would give me a nice start. The sites I need to scan cover the range in stacks from PHP / MySQL to Coldfusion, with some classic ASP and ASP.NET mixed in for good measure. What tools would you use to scan for Web application vulns? (Please note I'm focusing on the web apps directly, not the servers themselves).

  • Creating the Business Card Request InfoPath Form

    - by JKenderdine
Business Card Request Demo Files Back in January I spoke at SharePoint Saturday Virginia Beach about InfoPath forms and Web Part deployment.  Below is some of the information and details regarding the form I created for the session.  There are many blogs and Microsoft articles on how to create a basic form so I won’t repeat that information here.   This blog will just explain a few of the options I chose when creating the solutions for SPS Virginia Beach.  The above link contains the zipped package files of the two InfoPath forms(no code solution and coded solution), the list template for the Location list I used, and the PowerPoint deck.  If you plan to use these templates, you will need to update the forms to work within your own environments (change data connections, code links, etc.).  Also, you must have the SharePoint Enterprise version, with InfoPath Services configured in order to use the Web Browser enabled forms. So what are the requirements for this template? Business Card Request Form Template Design Plan: Gather user information and requirements for card Pull in as much user information as possible. Use data from the user profile web services as a data source Show and hide fields as necessary for requirements Create multiple views – one for those submitting the form and Another view for the executive assistants placing the orders. Browser based form integrated into SharePoint team site Submitted directly to form library The base form was created using the blank template.  The table and rows were added using Insert tab and selecting Custom Table.  The use of tables is a great way to make sure everything lines up.  You do have to split the tables from time to time.  If you’ve ever split cells and then tried to re-align one to find that you impacted the others, you know why.  Here is what the base form looks like in InfoPath.   Show and hide fields as necessary for requirements You will notice I also used Sections within the form.  These show or hide depending on options selected or whether or not fields are blank.  This is a great way to prevent your users from feeling overwhelmed with a large form (this one wouldn’t apply).  Although not used in this one, you can also use various views with a tab interface.  I’ll show that in another post. Gather user information and requirements for card Pull in as much user information as possible. Use data from the user profile web services as a data source Utilizing rules you can load data when the form initiates (Data tab, Form Load).  Anything you can automate is always appreciated by the user as that is data they don’t have to enter.  For example, loading their user id or other user information on load: Always keep in mind though how much data you load and the method for loading that data (through rules, code, etc.).  They have an impact on form performance.  The form will take longer to load if you bring in a ton of data from external sources.  Laura Rogers has a great blog post on using the User Information List to load user information.   If the user has logged into SharePoint, then this can be used quite effectively and without a huge performance hit.   What I have found is that using the User Profile service via code behind or the Web Service “GetUserProfileByName” (as above) can take more time to load the user data.  Just food for thought. You must add the data connection in order for the above rules to work.  You can connect to the data connection through the Data tab, Data Connections or select Manage Data Connections link which appears under the main data source.  The data connections can be SharePoint lists or libraries, SQL data tables, XML files, etc.  Create multiple views – one for those submitting the form and Another view for the executive assistants placing the orders. You can also create multiple views for the users to enhance their experience.  Once they’ve entered the information and submitted their request for business cards, they don’t really need to see the main data input screen any more.  They just need to view what they entered. From the Page Design tab, select New View and give the view a name.  To review the existing views, click the down arrow under View: The ReviewView shows just what the user needs and nothing more: Once you have everything configured, the form should be tested within a Test SharePoint environment before final deployment to production.  This validates you don’t have any rules or code that could impact the server negatively. Submitted directly to form library   You will need to know the form library that you will be submitting to when publishing the template.  Configure the Submit data connection to connect to this library.  There is already one configured in the sample,  but it will need to be updated to your environment prior to publishing. The Design template is different from the Published template.  While both have the .XSN extension, the published template contains all the “package” information for the form.  The published form is what is loaded into Central Admin, not the design template. Browser based form integrated into SharePoint team site In Central Admin, under General Settings, select Manage Form Templates.  Upload the published form template and Activate it to a site collection. Now it is available as a content type to select in the form library.  Some documentation on publishing form templates:  Technet – Manage administrator approved form templates And that’s all our base requirements.  Hope this helps to give a good start.

  • drupal - override form action?

    - by n00b0101
    I originally started this question in another thread, but that thread was sorta, kinda answered, and now I primarily want to know how to specify another form action... I tried using the code below, but the form action, when output, remains unchanged, although looking at the print_r($form), it's correctly changed... Why isn't it picking up? function mytheme_user_profile_form($form) { global $user; $uid = $user->uid; //print '<pre>'; print_r($form); print '</pre>'; $category = $form['_category']['#value']; switch($category) { case 'account': $form['#action'] = '/user/'.$uid.'/edit?destination=user/'.$uid; break; case 'education': $form['#action'] = '/user/'.$uid.'/edit/education?destination=user/'.$uid; break; case 'experience': $form['#action'] = '/user/'.$uid.'/edit/experience?destination=user/'.$uid; break; case 'publications': $form['#action'] = '/user/'.$uid.'/edit/publications?destination=user/'.$uid; break; case 'conflicts': $form['#action'] = '/user/'.$uid.'/edit/conflicts?destination=user/'.$uid; break; } //print '<pre>'; print_r($form); print '</pre>'; //print $form['#action']; $output .= drupal_render($form); return $output;

  • Website settings for running visual web as root?

    - by Curtis White
Scott Gu explains how to run visual web developer using a root path, here: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/12/19/tip-trick-how-to-run-a-root-site-with-the-local-web-server-using-vs-2005-sp1.aspx This worked exactly as he described in one instance for me. But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. I'm aware there are web application projects and web site model, and web site model is basically just a "directory". But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.

  • Upgrading Visual Studio web service project says to "convert to web application."

    - by Buggieboy
I have a Visual Studio 2003 web service project that I have to upgrade to Visual Studio 2008. After I have run the conversion wizard, I get this message: You have completed the first step in converting your Visual Studio .NET 2003 web project. To complete the conversion, please select your project in the Solution Explorer and choose the 'Convert to Web Application' context menu item. I got this message with another project, which was originally a "web site", rather than an ASP.NET "web application". It made sense to in that case (sort of). Why, however, would I not just want to have this project remain a web service project? Additionally, when I follow the instructions and select "Convert to Web Application" from the context menu, I don't get any feedback that anything has changed. Should it have? If so, what?

  • Web hosting for multiple web sites providing system isolation

    - by Justin
We have a small number of projects where we expect the client will not be maintaining the installed versions of applications we install to power the site (such as Drupal). Given that an important part of security is keeping things updated, we don't want to host these projects on our Plesk-powered dedicated servers that currently host lots of our other client's websites. Our goal is to find a host where we can deploy isolated instances (be these slices, virtual servers, grid servers, etc) for each individual (or groups of 2-3) web sites as we need them. These instances would be completely separate, so that if one web site were hacked it would not impact any other site. Typical hosting requirements: Linux Apache PHP 5 MySQL Supports Drupal Ability to setup a cron task (but we don't need SSH access) Daily backups Virtualized/cloud hosting (we want to avoid shared) Pricing per site is around $25/month OS is patched automatically Some options we have considered but won't work: MediaTemple: Two major data center-wide security incidents and recent downtime foster doubt about this host's technical ability. Slicehost: This would require us to manage the entire server, which we don't want to do. Rackspace Cloud Sites (formerly Mosso): No backup options. Do you have any recommended hosting options for given these requirements?

  • Drupal Ctools Form Wizard in a Block

    - by Iamjon
Hi everyone I created a custom module that has a Ctools multi step form. It's basically a copy of http://www.nicklewis.org/using-chaos-tools-form-wizard-build-multistep-forms-drupal-6. The form works. I can see it if I got to the url i made for it. For the life of me I can't get the multistep form to show up in a block. Any clues? /** * Implementation of hook_block() * */ function mycrazymodule_block($op='list', $delta=0, $edit=array()) { switch ($op) { case 'list': $blocks[0]['info'] = t('SFT Getting Started'); $blocks[1]['info'] = t('SFT Contact US'); • Catering for client's web-hosting needs, minus the headaches ?

    - by julien
I'll be trying to sell my Ruby on Rails development skills to small local businesses. It seems I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I couldn't manage to put their apps into production, in fact catering for this would be a selling point. However, I do not want to bill every client monthly for the cost of their hosting, they would have to be the contract holders with the hosting service, and I'd only consult if they needed technical help when scaling. I've looked on one hand at cloud platforms, like engine yard, which seem like they would be too costly for the smaller clients, and on the other hand at vps providers which seem they would not be client friendly enough. Has anyone faced the same issue and come up with a decent solution ?

  • What are some best practices for cookie based web authentication?

    - by rdasxy
I'm working on a small side project using CGI and Python (scalability is not an issue and it needs to be a VERY simple system. I was thinking of implementing authentication using cookies, and was wondering if there were any established best practices. When the user successfully authenticates, I want to use cookies to figure out who is logged on. What, according to the best practices, should be stored in such a cookie?

  • Reusing Web Forms across BPM Roles

    - by Mona Rakibe
Recently Varsha(another BPM Product Manager) approached me with a requirement where she wanted to reuse same Web Form for different task activity. We both knew this is easily achievable. The human task outcomes can differ to distinguish the submission based on roles. Her requirement was slightly more than this, she wanted to hide some data based on the logged in user. If you have worked on Web Form rules, dynamically showing and hiding data is common requirement and easily achievable using Form Rules. In this case the challenge was accessing BPM role inside the Web Form. Although, will be addressing this requirement in future release she wanted a immediate solution(Aha, after all customers are not the only one's who can not wait). Thankfully we managed to come-up with a solution and I hope this will be helpful to larger audience. Solution has 3 steps : Step 1: We added a hidden attribute in our form (Role). The purpose of this attribute is just to store the current logged in user's role and we pass the value during data association. Step 2 : In your data association step, pass the role value based on the Swimlane Step 3 : Now use this hidden attribute value in your Web Form rule for dynamic behavior Detailed steps and sample can be downloaded from Java.net.
